  Notes	Melba Howell Colwell, a granddaughter, said that her grandmother was a remarkable woman. After her husband died young, leaving her widowed with four small children, she worked to support her family. She had attended college and was an educated and articulate woman, becoming postmaster in Carlton, Texas. She was very independent and active throughout her life, walking six blocks to and from the grocery store to do her weekly shopping well into her 90's. Her doctor eventually insisted she take a cab. Melba also remembers her as a wonderful cook.
