| McLemore, James Knox Polk and wife, Margaret Jackson James Knox Polk with his wife, Margaret Jackson. His descendant, Sherry Connally Murray points out the knot of hair visible on Jame's head. She writes that because this hank of hair saved his life as a young man, he forevermore refused to have it cut, wearing it pinned up to his head in a small bun. She indicated she had heard two differing versions of the story, in one it happened during the Civil War, and in the other he was coming home from a bar in Jackson. "Anyway it happened when he was a young man. He fell in the river, and was drowning. Someone reached in and grabbed a hank of hair on the top of his head and saved him. He would never allow that bit of hair to be cut again for the rest of his life. It was 3 or 4 feet long." |
| McLemore, James Knox Polk and Family James Knox Polk McLemore and his wife, Margaret Jackson are seated. Sherry Murray believes the other seated woman is Margaret's mother, who was said to have later married one of James McLemore's brothers after her first husband died, making her both mother-in-law and sister-in-law. James and Margaret's children stand behind them. Sherry's grandmother, Viola is in the center of the back row, in the white dress. Viola was an artist, and loved all things with lace and frills, and always dressed accordingly. The identity of the other children, presumably Viola's siblings, is currently unknown.
PLEASE HELP US IDENTIFY THE OTHER CHILDREN OF JAMES AND MARGARET. |
