- Per a letter from Esther Hardin McGrew, the youngest child of James Tate and Elizabeth McGrew was Mary June who married Benjamin Maddox. They had several children, and when both Ben and Mary June died, a man named Telephus Johnson (b. 1824, Georgia) took charge of both the children and their estate. He beat their young daughter, Jesse, to death. There is a lawsuit documenting all this. Because of this, a Maddox brother took in the remaining children and moved to Goliad, TX by 1870. One of the daughters of Mary June married into the Cassels family of Marion Co, MS.
Wynema McGrew writes that a cousin, Mary Jane McGrew, and her husband John G. Maddox, helped to raise these children.
