- Email from Ron Hanks (ronhanks@earthlink.net) on August 13, 2006:
Sorry for the delay, I have been finding more details on this family. Of the children of James Stewart Hanks, this has been probably the most challenging one to sort out. James W Hanks and Marium Hughes married 26 Mar1854 in Richland County, Illinois. They are in Gibson Co., IN for the 1860 census with son William, age 4 and son Joel A. age 8/12. I have never found this family in the 1870 census. This created a big problem because James W died 10 Aug 1870 and Marium died 27 Feb 1872. The children were placed in different families and have been difficult to track. Probate and guardianship records helped to finally get all the children sorted out. Here is the list of children with notes about what I have been able to find.
