- Per "1850 Census Sabine County, Texas with Added Family Information and Corrections", Elbert Hines owned 7 slaves. In "Sabine County Genealogical Records, it was further noted that he was the Alcade of Sabine District in 1826, and fought in the Texas Revolution in 1836 (p. 28).
His tombstone is inscribed "Grandfather and Grandmother Melton Came to Texas in 1826. Born in Effingham Co., Ga;. Married Nov 5, 1816 in Pike Co., Miss." It is a triple marker with Mahana and Charlton Hines.
