- After graduating from eighth grade, Helen stayed home to help her dad with all the farm work, which included working with the livestock as well as field work during the wheat and corn harvest. In the winters, when the outside work slowed, she did beautiful handwork, both crocheting and embroidering pillowcases, tableclothes and other items. (Milligan, p 275).
