Notes |
- The son of David and Martha (BOWERS) FRANKFORTER, and grandson of Andrew and Elizabeth (SWARTZ) FRANKFORTER. His father, David, was born in Mahong (sic) County, Ohio and emigrated to Nebraska from upper Sandusky, Ohio. David enlisted in Company H, 49th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on August 15, 1861. David was one of five brothers who served in the Civil War, and was honorably discharged December 30, 1865 in occupied Texas. David's youngest brother, Noah was 12 when the war broke out, he had wanted to enlist as a drummer boy, but his father said five boys in the army was enough.
John was the seventh child born in David and Martha. He worked on the family farm until about 1905, when he moved to Ohiowa and apprenticed as a barber for his Uncle Lewis. He enjoyed his work as a barber, and on hot summer evenings he could often be found sitting outside his shop, visiting with local businessmen and townspeople (Milligan, p 271).
