- James Graves (1482) was born 6 Aug. 1829 (or 1830) in White Co., IL, on the farm adjoining the one where he later lived, died 21 Sept. 1913, and was buried in Stokes Chapel Cem., White Co., IL. He first married Emeline (or Emmeline) Elliott, daughter of John Elliott and Anna Condet, on 23 Aug. 1849. She died 22 May 1853. He married second Nancy Jane Gamron, daughter of Thomas Gamron and Anna Patton of White Co., IL, on 6 Dec. 1855 in White Co., IL. She was born 7 Sept. 1835 (or 27 Sept 1836 according to her tombstone), died 5 Dec. 1904, and was also buried in Stokes Chapel Cem. This family was recorded on the 1860-1880 censuses in White Co., IL.
James Graves was "one of the oldest settlers and a very extensive farmer, owning 710 acres of as fine land as there is in the county. Fine buildings and well improved. Mr. Graves is a Democrat and voted his first ballot for Franklin Pierce." (R-231, R-236)
