Johnston, Jr. was the husband of Mary McGuire/McGwier. They were married 23 Jan 1859 in Lawrence Co., TN. He was a soldier (CSA) of the Civil War, serving in Co D, 32nd Tenn Infanty. He was captured along with his brother William K at the battle of Ft. Donelson, taken by train to a POW camp in Lafayette, Tippecanoe, Indiana, and was transferred to Camp Morton, Indiana. He signed a loyalty oath and walked home to his home on the TN/AL state line. He was very prolific, with 12 children born to his first wife, and 4 by his second wife, Amanda Comer. He lived on his father's farm on Second Creek and the AL/TN State line, which he got once the Mr. Gibson who had purchased it from his dad became delinquent on his payments.
