Notes |
- Ingholf Vogel, from the SURNAME-ORIGINS-L@rootsweb.com, writes that "Scheifele and Sch?ufele are the same name. Scheifele is the way people would say Sch?ufele (shovel) in parts of south-western Germany. I'm sure an expert on Suabian and Allamanian could tell you exactly which regions say Sch?ufele and which say Scheifele. If you ever visit the area ask the locals. I'm always surprised that some can even tell where others are from (even the village !) just by the sound of their dialect.
As for the meaning - that could be: 1) Suabian for fruit trader. 2) South-West German from Sch?ufele for a small shovel for a person that worked with the same.
The spelling of the name today is based simply on how one of your ancestors pronounced it or on how a certain priest wrote in down. It may be that one of the explanations is more likely for a particular region than another - but that's another question for the regional specialists.
BonnieMargaret Jacobs, in her 1981 unpublished manuscript about the Benkelman family, cites the same meaning.
