- He was the son of Matej Kubicek and Katerina Jelinek. Matej immigrated in 1873, along with his wife and his siblings, Josef Kubicek, Stela Kubicek (married a Sperek), and Katerina Kubicek (married a Laurenc).
Matej was drafted into the German army as a young man. Worked as a Mason after his military service. Mathias and Teresa had 13 children, but only seven survived and reached adulthood. Their eldest son, Josef, was born soon after their marriage, and died as an infant during their ocean voyage to the United States. He was buried at sea. Their children Lillian, Estelle, Mary, Edward, and James were all born, and died at a young age, in rural Fillmore County, Nebraska.
Matej and Teresa were naturalized on 4 June 1878 in Fillmore County, Nebraska.
