- Joseph left his homeland as a young boy. Arriving with him John J. and Katerina Beran Duba, his grandpa, Vaclav Duba, his uncle and aunt, the Vaclav Dubas and his infant sister, Mary. In 1886, they settled on a prarie farm fourteen miles west of Wilber. His mother passed away on March 5, 1890, leaving him, his two sisters, Mary and Anna, and his infant brother Johnny, his father and grandfather to mourn her. Joseph's father later remarried Anna Rychecky, who was a good stepmother. (Milligan, p 263).
