  Notes	She came to America at age 6. Her family originally settled in Red Oak, Iowa and then moved to a farm near Crete. Her parents died of the flu shortly after her marriage, and she raised her younger brothers and sisters. After her husband's death, she managed their farm for over 20 more years, with the help of her children. She lived in a sod hut, killed the snakes first thing in the morning and had a dog that actually removed cockleburs from her skirt in the evening. (Milligan, p 211).
