Notes |
- From STIRPES Magazine: John Brixey, Rachel's first husband, was also an immigrant. He had arrived in Philadelphia from London on 31 August 1773 aboard the Snow "Sally", which was captained by Stephen Jones. The Philadelphia Mayor's Court Indenture Book records the sale of John's indenture to Daniel Dudley of Evesham Township, Burlington County, New Jersey. By the terms of his indenture, he was to serve until 31 August 1777, in return for his fare of 18 pounds. Though the two indentures recorded immdiately above his provided for a suit of new clothing at the end of the indenture, John's did not. After serving nearly 18 months of this indenture, John ran away. On 15 March 1775 Francis Dudley advertised in the THE PHILADELPHIA GAZETTE under the heading "Five Pounds Reward...Run away from the subscriber...an English servant man, named John Brixey, about 20 years of age, slim built, and about six feet high, of fair complexion, black hair, and stoops in his walk...He was seen crossing Cooper's Ferry yesterday. He had about Five Pounds in money with him...FRANCIS DUDLY." The amount offered for his capture was about average for a man--or for a horse. A greater reward was usually offered for runaway house servants and those with special skills, suggesting that John was probably a farm laborer
John had a land on Parson's Fork of Silver Creek in Burke County, North Carolina, surveyed on 28 July 1778, eleven months after his indenture was scheduled to end. John was either captured quickly so that his indenture was not lengthened greatly, or he was not captured at all. His land entry was No. 1310, issued as Grant No. 335 on 28 October 1782. John and Rachel probably married 1777-1778 based on the birth of their children, Thomas, John and Janet. Family tradition, neither proved nor disproved, says that John died at sea on his way to England to see about an inheritance in the mid-1880s. Rachel did what most young widows with three young children did. She married a neighbor, Barnabas Strickland, age 19.
