Edward Buehrly
Edward Buehrly, 93, a lifelong resident of Cass City, died Wednesday, Feb 1, 1989 at the Provincial House, after a long illness.
He was born Sept 6, 1895, on the family Centennial farm in Elkland Township where he lived all his life. He was the son of Leonard and Catherine (Burke) Buehrly.
He was married Janet Gardner on May 7, 1919, in Cass City. Mrs. Buehrly died Dec. 30, 1968.
Mr. Buehrly was one of the oldest members of Salem United Methodist Church of Cass City and one of the few remaining World War I veterans, having served with the United States Army Infantry. He was also a member of American Legion of Cass City.
He is survived by one son and his wife, Carl Buehrly, and his wife Carolyn of Lansing, three grandchildren; Robert Buehrly of Traunik, Mrs. Michael (Colleen) Portale of Marquette and Miss Mary Lynn Buehrly of Lansing; and three great-grandchildren, Bridgette, Tiffany and Bethany.
Two brothers, Fred and Lawrence Buehrly; and three sisters, Bertha Elliott, Mary Striffler and Elsie Anthes preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held Saturday at Salem United Methodist Church of Cass City with the Rev Clare Patton, pastor, officiating. Interment with full military honors was in Elkland Cemetery, Cass City.

It appears that at least 33 of the 36 adults in this Sunday School class were directly related, through either blood or marriage, to the Striffler, Benkelman and Helwig families who emigrated together from Erie County, New York to Tuscola County, Michigan beginning in the 1860's.
