- The 1860 census shows that a Jessee L Cramer, age 28 and born in Pennsylvania, was a boarder in Wabash County, Indiana, and working as a house carpenter.
U.S. Civil War Soldier Records and Profiles on Ancestry.com shows that Jesse L. Cramer, of Huntington County, Indiana, enlisted on 27 Jan 1865 as a Private in Company B, Indiana 153rd Infantry Regiment on 27 Jan 1865, and mustered out on 4 Sep 1865 at Louisville, KY. This is confirmed by a 1901 biography of his nephew, posted online at the Ancestry.com Message Board for Huntington County, Indiana, notes that he took part in the late rebellion (Civil War), and "served throughout the war."

At the time of the 1900, 1910 and 1920 census, Jesse was widowed and a resident of the Marion Branch National Military Home in Grant County, Indiana. Dean Cramer shows that Jesse died in Ohio, and was buried at the National Soldier's Home Cemetery, Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio.
