- Ray lived near Milligan his entire life. He attended grade school in District #85 and graduated from Milligan High School in 1939. He entered the army during World War II on September 4, 1942 and was honorably discharged on October 13, 1945, serving inthe European Theatre, and seeing action in Africa, Italy, Corsica, France and Germany. After returning home, he met his future bride at a dance in Ohiowa. They were blessed with 36 years of married life and two children. His chosen occupatoin was farming which he dearly loved. He was an active and proud member of the American Legion Post #240 Milligan and the VFW Post #7102 of Geneva (Milligan, 1988-2008. p. 130).

- After their marriage they lived on a farm northeast of Milligan until June 1952, when they retired and moved into Milligan. There they operated the Fairmont Produce station until 1957. In January 1966 they celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary and received 50 year pins from ZCBJ Lodge Svatopluk Cech #76. (Milligan, pp 230-231).
