27903 William Payne is said to have served as a Lieutentant in the Revolution. His grand-daughter wrote me that she had often heard her father tell of the visit of a Pension Agent to his mother which she violently refused, saying "My husband did not serve his country for a pension." In 1855 his sons corresponded in an unsuccessul effort to reclaim a military grant of land alongside Bear Grass Creek, where Louisville now stands, which he neglected to survey and register. He was born in the Church of England, and died in Kentucky an ardent Baptist Minister with a record of long service as such, having performed the marriage ceremony of some of his earliest children. (Payne, pps 255-256).

William McClung Paxton, in his book ANNALS OF PLATTE COUNTY, MISSOURI, states that "William Payne was born near Lexington, Kentucky, and was a member of the Baptist Church and was know as 'Parson Payne.' He removed to Mason County, KY, where in my childhood, I often visited his family."

Charles Strong, on his November, 2002 research trip to Kentucky and Missouri, located the following deed:

To all to whom these presents shall come; I William Payne of Mason County and Commonwealth of Kentucky send greetings. Know ye that for and in consideration of the natural love and affection which I have and bear TO MY SON WILLIAM H. PAYNE OF THE COUNTY OF BOURBON and commonwealth aforesaid, I have given, granted, bargained, and sold and by these presents do give, grant, bargain and sell, unto my said son Willam H. The History of Sabine Parish, Louisiana (author John Belisle, The Sabine Banner Press, 1912) states that "in 1860 the white population of Sabine Parish numbers about four thousand, and there were less than two thousand slaves. There were few really wealthy people in the parish, and many owned not more than one of two slaves." The owners of six or more in 1861 included John Maximillian.

27929 William Thomas, "Bill", Whittington II, 77, of Hemphill, Texas, passed away peacefully at his home on February 14, 2021.

Bill was born on November 28, 1943 in Henderson, Texas to William Thomas Whittington and Carrie Keidel Whittington. He lived in San Augustine until he was two, and then, being the son of a military father, lived in numerous states and even abroad.

Bill spent the majority of his career in the forestry industry. He moved to Sabine County from Louisiana in 1967 when he went to work for Temple Lumber Company. He wanted each child to have a book of their own in hopes they would understand the doors that reading and education could open.

After retirement, Bill enjoyed traveling with his beloved Jean Ann and could tell you the best restaurant in every town they went to. His all time favorite was Jenny's Fried Chicken in Kirbyville!

27930 William Vardeman of Goochland Co. Virginia, who received 200 acres, on the South side of the Rivanna River near the Mountains, adjacent to Charles Lewis, rec. 27 Sep 1734, for one pound (stirling) p. 296, Patent Book 15, from the book Cavaliers and Pioneers 1732-1741, 975.5 R 2n, p. 52. (Courtesy of Leatha Betts)

Called "Old William." He relocated to an area of "up-country" South Carolina which became part of the old 96th District and, in 1782, Newberry County. It had only been open to settlement for about 30 years and was the frontier with the Cherokee Indians at the time of this arrival. He left a will dated in 1783--probated in 1789--in which he named his current wife and his four sons in order: John, William Jr, Peter and James. Unfortunately, he did not name any of his daughters. (Letter from J.H. Vardeman, Alpharetta, GA dated March 31, 2000)
Vardeman, William (I7456)

27931 William Verdeman is listed on Bedford Co. Virginia Order book 1-A, 19 Mar 1757, (book 975.5675 P28b p. 141, as having brought in 4 young Wolves heads (bounty on Wolves) and payment, as did John Verdeman.

Stayed in Virginia until 1779, at which time he relocated to Wilkes County, Georgia.
Vardeman, William (I13023)

27932 William was born Aug. 29, 1916 to Ollie Manchel Fullen and Helen Lucas/Fullen. He married Nellie Florence Lummus on September 7, 1935 in Whiteface, Texas. He was a retired heavy equipment operator for a road construction company.

He died in Breckenridge, Texas on June 18, 2001 and was interned in the Sundown Cemetery at Sundown, Texas. He was a resident of Sundown for over 60 years.

27933 William was born in Wales, then moved to London, England where he worked as a shoemaker. Later, he moved to New York, then Chicago, and to Lee County, Illinois, where he bought a farm. He moved his family to Saline County, Nebraska in 1875 where he raised shorthorn cattle and Chester White hogs. His farm was in Section 22 Atlanta Precinct which was one-half mile west of the Atlanta City Cemetery (Milligan, p 257). Davies, William (I2952)

27934 William was likely married previously. Eliza, age 18, appears to be too young to be the mother of Barnanbus, age 9. One of both ages might also be in error. Family: William W. Arthur / Eliza Turner (F6698)

27935 William was married twice. His second wife was named Lorene, and they had two sons, Leroy Allen and Dale. Tenopir, William "Bill" (I13585)

27936 William was not listed as a child of John and Catherine (Schlote) Cramer in the BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY OF VAN WERT COUNTY, however, he was shown as a son in SENECA COUNTY BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES. It appears he is a child of John and Catherine, based both on the biography of his eldest brother, Daniel, and the fact that Daniel lived with him in 1880, and was listed as his brother.

He was a member of the Ebenezer Chapel Society, Bettsville, incorporated May 19, 1865.
Cramer, William (I6766)

27937 William's "Uncle Billy" Holman was appointed his guardian in December, 1857 by Chief Justice Alfred Polk. William's sister, Anna Holman, and her husband, Richard F. Slaughter, a San Augustine Attorney filed a petition against William W. Holman and Matthew Cartwright to gain control of William Holman's interest in a 722 acre tract obtained by Clementine Holman dec'd as an heir to the estate of John Cartwright. After hearing the case the judge ruled against the Slaughters. (Noble, Harry P. TEXAS TRAILBLAZERS: SAN AUGUSTINE PIONEERS: Best of East Texas Publishers, Lufkin, Texas, 1999, pp. 128-129).

Henson and Parmelee write that "William S. Holman, the orphan son of Sanford and Clementine" served alongside his cousin, Lon Cartwright [a son of Amanda Holman] during the Civil War. On May 25, 1861, Lon, Meck "and twenty other volunteers rode to Shelby County, where Captain Short lived, to enlist...Short's company left in June to rendezvous near Dallas, where along with other East Texas units, they were sworn into Col. Elkana Greer's mounted regiment....(and) eventually were designated as the Third Texas Cavalry, and Short's company became Company E." (Henson & Parmelee, THE CARTWRIGHTS OF SAN AUGUSTINE, p. 200, p. 205) By 1862, Bill was a second lieutenant of Company C, and "acted nobly and received compliments from Maj. Stone for his gallant behavior." (ibid, p. 224). After the civil war, he moved to Bell County where, in addition to his own business, he watched over the investments of his Uncle, Matthew Cartwright. (ibid, p. 264).
Holman, William "Billy" Sanford Jr. (I16312)

27938 William's granddaughter said that he never spoke of his own father, but often of his step-father Grymes, a slave owner and cripple. (Payne, p 289)

The first record of William in Shelby County, Missouri can be found in the minutes of the March, 1838 term of the circuit court of Shelby County, William Payne was one of a number of people brought up on charges of gaming. This indulgence was in the form of amusement for dull days, but authorities looked upon it as a dangerous practice, also as a means of "stuffing" their pocketbooks and creating a little stir. Bryant Cockrum, George Gentry, William Payne, Isaac Wooley, Elijah Owens and Robert Joiner were all charged with "playing at loo"; Joseph Holeman and Abraham Vandiver, "for playing seven-up"; Elijah Owens, John Ralls, and Abraham Vandiver, "for playing three up"; Wesley Habbiburton and Joseph Holeman were indicted "for permitting gaming in their house." Three of the parties were convicted. George Gentry was fined $2; Isaac Wooley $1, and William Payne $5. The others were acquitted. (HISTORY OF SHELBY COUNTY, p 25).

The Shelby County 1840 Census shows Payne, William 0-0-1-0-2-0-0-1/0-0-1-2-0-0-0-1

Charles R. Strong and his daughter, Mary Pat Strong, while at the Shelbina Library came across many years of the land tax records for Shelby County from 1836 - 1863. The following information was found on these tax rolls:

Year Owner Acres Section Township Range 1841 William Payne 80 13 58 10 1844 William Payne 40 34 59 10 1852-1854 William Payne 80 13 58 10
40 18 58 9 1858 William Payne Sr. Same as Above

At the time of the 1850 census, 20 year old Edward WILSON and 16 year old Sarah WILSON were living with William and Sally, as was 13 year old Philo HOWELL. They were born, respectively, in Kentucky, Missouri, and Ohio. Relationship unknown. Philo Howell was still living with the family at the time of the 1860 census.

This family was not listed on the 1860 Ledger of Shelby slave owners.

27949 Willie was married first to Titus Coon, who was the father of her only child, daughter Bobbie. He left the family when Bobbie was born, leaving sole responsibility for raising their chid with Willie.

Both Bobbie Louise, still just a toddler, and Willie's widowed mother, Clarissa Conn Boyett, died within a few days of each other from pneumonia in March, 1935. Willie had been caring for them both.

Martha White, a niece of Willie's wrote that "Apparently Bobbie was a beloved, vivacious child adored by the whole community. Willie had saved the dress "they tore off my baby" when she was ill...and all the sympathy notes. There is a lovely story I never heard--until Mom [Annie Lora Boyett White] was in the nursing home and had dementia--and it was at a sermon Jackson [Boyett, Marti's cousin] gave. When Grandmother (who also was beloved and a popular member of the Junction community) and Bobbie died in the same week...it was rough in so many ways. She (Clarissa) had cooked for prisoners in the jail, as Ernest was sheriff then. One was financial. Times had been very, very hard for a long time and our family was poor...Anyway, Ernest went to the funeral home to make arrangements to try to pay for the funerals and was told there was no bill. What? Yes, the community thought so highly of him, Grandmother, Bobbie and the family that they had all contributed and paid off the two funerals. So, there are deep, abiding and loving roots with our family in Junction.
All are buried in the Junction cemetery.

Later in her live, Willie worked for the State and also worked at times at the Capitol.
Her husband, Sox [Hoy Reginald Smith], worked and retired from the Texas General Land Office.

The following biography, from FindAGrave, was also prepared by Martha White

Willie Orma Boyett was born to Robert and Clarissa Boyett in Sabine County, Texas on October 17, 1903. Mrs. Smith's first marriage to Titus Coon in East Texas produced one adorable child - a daughter named Bobbie Louise Coon - who passed away at age 4 of pneumonia - three days before Willie's own mother died of the same in Junction, Texas in 1935. Willie never got over the loss of her precious girl. Willie remarried Hoy Reginald "Sox" Smith in Kimble County, Junction, Texas, on Christmas Day 1939. Willie and Sox were married for 39 years until his death in January 1979. Wille is buried in Junction by her daughter, Bobbie Coon, her Mother Clarissa Conn Boyett and her husband, Hoy R. "Sox" Smith. Mrs. Smith loved to cook, can, garden and sew. She was always helping out others whether sending over food or making baby clothes for families who could not afford to buy any. She was a loving daughter, wife, sister and aunt. She is greatly missed.
