E U L O G Y VIVIAN MORLAS SCHOENFELD 1909 - 2000
WRITTEN BY: KATHLEEN S. CASEY--June 1, 2000

This is indeed the end of an era. Mama is the last of her immediate Morlas family. Eight sisters and four brothers have gone before her. And I have lost the best friend I ever had.

For Mama, life was a long journey, and in her 91 years she had many side trips and outings along the way. She loved reminiscing about them.

With great relish she used to tell about her first plane ride. She was not quite 14, and her father, who died in 1923, was still alive. Someone was selling plane rides over New Orleans for about $15 apiece. Mama's mother arranged for Mama and some of her sisters to take a ride. While they were flying overhead, Mama's parents were sitting in their yard. When Mama's father saw the plane, he said to Grandma, "I wonder what fools are in that plane." Grandma spared him the truth.

In 1926 and 1929, Mama, her mother and unmarried sisters toured Europe. Mama got more mileage out of those trips than anybody else, I know. She loved telling how she was followed after an evening out in Amsterdam by a big crowd because the people thought she, in her long evening gown, was a movie star. She regaled us with stories of officers and college students on the ships who were madly in love with her. I never doubted her for a moment.

Then there was the flight to Detroit in 193l with Grandma and Aunt Eleanor to buy the Hupmobile and drive it home. In 1938 there was the sad journey by train from Corpus Christi, Texas, to New Orleans when Mama learned her sister Clothilde was dying.

Mama's family and friends meant more to her than anything else. I was brought up in a home where I felt secure and loved. Vivian, Jim, Bob, Noel and I knew we were blessed.

We and other family members have talked a lot lately about things we did together, places we went: a trip to Sturgis, Mississippi, when I was about 15 to visit Aunt Lucille and family, weekend excursions to Mississippi in a car loaded with cement and tools so Daddy could work on his swimming pool. Mama and Daddy named their place at Beneshewaah KAVIJIBONO, using the first two letters of each of their five children's names. We enjoyed many happy gatherings there with family and friends.

Mama and Aunt Eleanor went by train to California to see Jim who was there in the Navy. They also visited Uncle John. Aunt Leontine had sent Mama and Aunt Eleanor off with a big box lunch. The travelers laughed all the way to California and back.

Mama and Daddy went to Colorado in 1972 with Jim and Dee and Aunt Dora and Uncle Larry. Just recently in the hospital Mama said they had a "wonderful time." Noel reminded me night before last that on that trip after eating at a roadside park, Mama threw a paper cup over her shoulder and it landed in a trash receptacle. Jim said, "I bet you can't do that again." He gave her another cup and once again she made a goal. Mama was always on target no matter what she was doing.

When Mama and Daddy stayed at a dude ranch once with Bob and Genie and their children, Mama got to ride horseback again for the first time in many years since she had ridden regularly along the levee. She took great pleasure telling how as a young woman, she was thrown over a horse's head and had to lead the horse to a lamp post and climb up the post to remount and gallop away uninjured.

On trips to St. Martinville, Mama and Daddy relaxed and enjoyed "happy hour" on Bob and Genie's front porch.

There were trips with Vivian and Sig and their children to Austin and to Daytona Beach and later with Vivian to Daytona Beach, Disney, World and Key West.

And, Mama never missed a grandchild's wedding even if it meant traveling to Daytona Beach and later to San Antonio while nursing a broken pelvis.

Over the years, Mama and I reminisced about life when Vivian, Jim, Bob, Noel and I were children. Visiting was a big part of our entertainment. I remember a family reunion at Grandma's on South Tonti Street. On Sundays we went to see Uncles Louis, Leon and Paul and Aunts Leontine, Stella, Lucille, Jennie, Juliet and Eleanor. When Aunt Josephine came to town from Oklahoma, we had get-togethers on a large scale.

When I was a child, my brothers, Vivian and I took rides to the lakefront and Audubon Park where we'd run up and down Monkey Hill, look at the seals and visit the zoo. Daddy would take us swimming.

Every Easter we'd pick clover in the park for our baskets, and at Christmastime we'd take rides to see the lights and then go to Canal Street to see Santa Claus waving from the balcony at D. H. Holmes.

Noel tells about going downtown with Mama to shop and eat at Kress or McCrory's. On one occasion when he was about five, Mama bought him a little rubber mouse which he left on the streetcar. When they discovered his loss, he was heartbroken. Mama, carrying him, ran after the streetcar but couldn't get it to stop. She even called NOPSI to see if anyone had turned in Noel's lost treasure. No such luck. On their next trip downtown, Mama bought Noel another rubber mouse. Life was simple, and it was good.

For years Vivian was Mama's wheels-running her errands and taking her to her doctors and to visit family and friends.

In recent years, Mama didn't go out much, but her radios and telephone took her where she wanted to go. She looked forward to talking to her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. They were very good to her, and Mama was good to everybody. She was thrifty and generous, a happy combination which benefited many of us.

Family and friends played a vital part in Mama's life to the end, and they kept dropping in and phoning her at the hospital. One day I counted 20 visitors. She seemed happy being surrounded by those who love her. Mama knew she was dying, and she accepted death with prayers and peace. And there was laughter, too. Only a few days before she died Noel had Mama smiling over a hilarious story about Linda's dog Promise.

I owe all that I am and all that I have to my parents, and my life will be very different without Mama.

It is awfully hard to say goodbye, and I won't. Instead, for Mama-our dear, sweet Mangie-on her final journey, I wish her Godspeed.

27319 VIVIAN SOLARES OBITUARY

Vivian Schoenfeld Solares found eternal peace on June 15, 2022, at 10:35 am, with her family by her side at the age of 82 years old, with her final words being "I'm ready to go".

Vivian was born March 11, 1940, in New Orleans, Louisiana to Eugene and Vivian Schoenfeld and was the second of five children. Vivian lived a full and eventful life as she grew up in New Orleans. She attended high school at the Academy of the Sacred Heart and graduated from Dominican College. While growing up in New Orleans, Vivian enjoyed spending time with her grandmother, Mere. Vivian was the family historian, and told many stories about grandparents, great-grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and even family pets.

Vivian was always ready to face challenges head on, and was often an outside the box thinker, inventing many things throughout her life to help with her day-to-day living. There was never a challenge or project that was too big for Vivian, she always did things little by little until they were completed. After starting a family in 1963, Vivian and her husband moved to Thibodaux, Louisiana where they had three more children, before settling into her home in Harahan, Louisiana in 1972. It was in her house in Harahan where Vivian raised her four children and would eventually help raise her grandchildren at different stages of their lives. Vivian, a teacher by profession, made it a point to show her children and grandchildren the importance of education and hard work.

During her life Vivian was able to imprint lifelong lessons on her family and friends that will carry on her legacy. As Vivian liked to say, "despite everything that happened it was a wonderful life". Vivian also loved gardening and going to her cabin in Kiln, Mississippi.

Vivian will be missed dearly by those who knew her. Vivian was preceded in death by her husband Sigmund A. Solares, her father Eugene M. Schoenfeld, her mother Vivian M. Schoenfeld and her brothers Eugene M. and Robert M. Schoenfeld.

Vivian is survived by her older sister Kathleen S. Casey, her younger brother Noel D. Schoenfeld, her four children Jessica S. Cristina, Rachel R. Solares, Vivian S. Cahill, and Sigmund J. Solares (Brandy), her eight grandchildren Ashley F. Millet (Jordan), Madeline Cristina, Michael Cristina, Alexandra V. Demac, Olivia R. Demac, Corey C. Cahill, Ryan W. Demac, Arden J. Demac and great-grandchild Leo D. Millet.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the memorial service in the chapel of Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. in New Orleans, on Monday, June 27, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be held at the funeral home beginning at 9:00 a.m. Per

Vivian's request, absolutely no flowers. Instead, please make donations to the Ozanam Inn in New Orleans, Louisiana.

27320 Vivian was born on a farm northwest of Milligan. She and her parents and two sisters moved to Shickley, where they also farmed, when she was still an infant. The family later moved to their family farm near Milligan. She completed her grade school education in District #25. She graduated from Exeter High School in 1936, and after graduation taught school in York and Saline Counties. She moved to Lincoln, where she worked at the Miller and Paine's Department Store. During World War II, she worked at the Cushman Motor Works, working on the bomb fuse assembly line, later transferring to the office. She left their employment after her marriage to Wally Johnson of Friend in 1948. She and Wally worked at the Vogue Theater which he owned and the Friend Sale Barn, which they purchased in 1954. In 1957, they began to collect antique autos, and later opened an antique shop. They traveled extensively throughout the United States and foreign countries. (Milligan, p 322).

In Loving Memory Of
V. Vivian Johnson

V. Vivian Johnson was born in Fillmore County on a farm near Exeter, Nebraska on February 15, 1919 to William and Rose (Hromadka) Votipka, the third of five children and died Tuesday, January 26, 2010 at the Exeter Care Center in Exeter at the age of 90 years 11 months and 11 days. As a young girl Vivian attended Exeter High School and graduated with the class of 1936. She furthered her education by attending Wayne State Teachers College and earned her teaching certificate. For a time she taught rural schools in Saline and York Counties. On February 14, 1948, Vivian was united in marriage to Carl W. "Wally" Johnson in San Francisco, California.

Returning to Friend, Vivian and Wally operated the Vogue Theater in Friend from 1948 until 1957 and in 1960 they started Johnson's Antique Shop. Over the years they became quite the "experts" in collecting and acquiring various antiques, especially antique automobiles. Vivian had great fun wearing antique clothing to go with the car when they would ride in parades or car tours. She also often put on "style shows" to show off the antique clothing. Together they enjoyed extensive traveling as well. Vivian was an excellent cook and enjoyed entertaining her family, cookies were always available when you stopped in to visit. Vivian is remembered by her nieces and nephews as being the authority. If Aunt Vivian said to do it, it was done.

Vivian was a member of the United Church of Christ the American Legion Auxiliary in Friend and a former member of the Congregational Church in Exeter. Vivian spent many hours working with the card recycling at the Friend Manor.

She is survived by her brother, Bill Victor, Northridge, CA, sister, Wilma Murphy, Exeter, sister-in-law, Doris Conti, Mountain View, CA, several nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

Vivian was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Wally in 1985 and sisters, Lucille Wright and Helen Hayes.

A Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 30, 2010 at the United Church of Christ in Friend with the Revs. Tim and Ginny Adams officiating. Interment will be in the Andrew Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday from 11 am - 8 pm at Lauber-Moore Funeral Home, Friend. Memorials have been established to the church.

Thomas H. Payne, 19 to Bessie Gentry, 18 married 12-27-1912

Because of his outgoing nature, it must have come as a surprise to some when Tom Payne and Bessie Gentry were married a few weeks after her 18th birthday. Bessie was timid and shy by nature, and much happier in town than in the outdoors. They had five children in fairly short order, and times were tough in Oklahoma during the dust bowl. Charles Strong, Bessie's oldest grandson, also remembers that Bessie had very high standards, which her husband found hard to live up to. She was a thorough and dedicated housekeeper, and was almost obsessive about things being neat and tidy at all times. Charles recalled a story one of Bessie's brothers related to him about dropping by one afternoon for a visit. Bessie had just mopped, and refused to let him in, not wanting her immaculate floors stepped on.

ANN ARBOR? David F. Striffler, professor emeritus of dental public health in the University of Michigan School of Public Health, and professor emeritus of dentistry in the U- M School of Dentistry, died here on May 29. Striffler, 72, was a national leader in the field of dental public health.

"Students always came first with Dr. Striffler," said Brian A. Burt, chair of the Department of Community Health Programs at the School of Public Health. "He contributed substantially to the development of his discipline, but his greatest satisfaction was always the achievements of his graduates. In his active career and in retirement, he loved to keep in contact with as many of them as possible. He even learned to use e-mail after his retirement to help him do this. He will be sadly missed by all of us."

Born in Pontiac, Mich., Striffler received his D.D.S. degree in 1947 and his master's degree in public health in 1951 from the U-M. He was appointed professor in both schools in 1965.

Striffler also was acting chair of the Department of Health Development in the School of Public Health in 1968- 69, and acting chair of community dentistry in 1969-71. He became chair of the Department of Community Health Programs in 1980.

The senior editor of the leading textbook in dental public health, "Dentistry, Dental Practice and the Community," Striffler also served as associate editor and editor of the Journal of Public Health Dentistry and published numerous scientific papers and editorial commentaries.

Striffler was active in major professional organizations. In recognition of his contributions to his field, Striffler received the Distinguished Service Award of the American Association of Public Health Dentistry in 1977 and the Knutson Award of the Dental Section of the American Public Health Association in 1984.
