150 Reuben settled in Jay, New York about 1800. He removed to Wilmington, New York where he started a potashery, opened a hotel, and before 1820 erected a forge which he conducted until 1849. He served as Supervisor and Postmaster; was a member of the Assembly 1815-1817 and State Senator 1828-1831, and a member of Constitutional Convention in 1821. He was one of the Pioneer settlers of Essex County.
On 22 May 1806 he was commissioned Captain in the New York State Militia, and Major Commandant of an Independent Battalion on 2 March 1814; he resigned 6 April 1815. He served in the War of 1812 as Captain of the 8th (Miller's) Regiment, detached militia 1 July 1812 to 10 January 1813 on the Canadian frontier; Captain of the 9th Regiment August 1 to 6, Murray's Raid, Plattsburg, New York; Major of Sanford's Battalion May 13-16 1814, mouth of Boghet River and September 2-14, 1814, siege of Plattsburg.

An article about him was published on the front page of "The Plattsburgh Sentinel", Vol. 35, No. 48, published on Friday, April 18, 1890. It was one of a series about 'noted men and women of the Champlain Valley and the Adirondacks,' and stated that although it had been nearly 35 years since he departed this life, his name is familiar to the people on the line of the Ausable River, and many in all of Northern New York. The article noted his homestead was currently owned by son-in-law Elisha Adams. The article mentioned he had moved to his mountain home, then a wilderness, with his wife in 1805. He was said to be one of the leading Methodists of Wilmington, with the fine brick church of that village built at his expense. Amos Avery, a son-in-law, settled in Wilmington in 1822, and Elisha A. Adams, another son-in-law settled their in early days as well, though in 1890 he was a resident of Plattsburgh. Maj. Sanford was the first postmaster of Wilmington, and was suceeded by Elisha A. Adams. Maj. Sanford died at the residence of his son-in-law J. F. Bartlett, at Columbus, Ohio in 1855. A daughter. Mrs. L. W. Pierce, resides in Pittsburgh, Mrs. M. G. Baker, Miss Anna Adams or Plattsburgh, F. E. Pierce on Morrisonville, Mrs. Oliver Able of Elizabethtown, Mrs. E. W. Hindes of Burlington, Vt., and Mrs. Emmet Fitch, of Mo???, are among the grandchildren. Also, Sanford Avery, Willsbourough, Mrs. Bullen, Black Brook; Maj. H. J. Adams, Denver, Colo.; E. W. Pierce, Rochester, NY; Miss Mary Pierce, Pittsburgh, Miss Fannie Carter, Keeseville, and others.

159 The "History of Rutland County, Vermont" says that sometime before April 1783 Capt. Eleazer Dudley and Abijah Peet, both from Woodbury, Connecticut settled in the Town of Westhaven. Timothy Lindsley and others came the same year from Connecticut, and were closely followed by Heman Barlow, Cornelius Brownson, David Sanford, Samuel Lee, Amos and John McKinstry and others.
He was a farmer and hotel keeper at Castleton, Vermont. His first deed of purchase there is dated 12 July 1796. During the War of 1812 he was Captain of a Company, 30th Regiment U. S. Infantry.
On 7 May 1842, dower was set to Lucretia Sanford, widow of David. Partition was made 15 July 1843 to Louisa Andrus, Barnum D. Sanford, Lucy Drake, Harriet E. Everett, Charles Sandford, Charlotte Sandford, Albert S. Tuttle; the heirs of Persis S. Sanford each to have one eighth. (Castleton Provate 19:4, 29)
Sanford, David (I30540)

160 The Sanford genealogy gives her birth date as 2 December 1885, which is obviously impossible. Probably it is her death date. Hartman, Catherine E. (I30692)

161 The Sanford genealogy says Frances died 17 August 1882, but she does not appear with the family on the 1880 census. Probably she died 17 August 1872. Hyde, Frances Elizabeth (I31283)

162 The Sanford genealogy says George W. Sanford was born 3 January 1874 at Fair Haven, Vermont. The History of Rutland County calls him George William Sanford and says he was born 23 January 1874, and that by that time the family was at Castleton, Vermont.

Sanford, George William (I30899)

Hogle, James C. (I30653)

168 The Sanford genealogy says Lucretia was born in 1769 in Leominster, Massachusetts, and died 20 February 1813. The death date is obviously impossible, since first wife Abigail died 19 February 1813, and children attributed to Lucretia were born in 1816 and 1821. Probably the birth date given for Lucretia is wrong also, as it would make her 47 and 52 when her children were born. Beaman, Lucretia (I30542)

186 LORRAINE SMITH BENKELMAN
Lorraine Benkelman died with her family by her side June 15, 2012 in her home in Caseville from complications of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. She was 81.
Born in Kalamazoo February 12, 1931 to Clarence W. and Cora Page Smith she was raised in Kalamazoo and studied business at Michigan State University for two years before marrying Robert F. Benkelman September 30, 1950. They lived in East Lansing and Bay City before settling in the Thumb in 1962, when Mr. Benkelman founded the Tuscola Broadcasting Company. After several years as a homemaker, Mrs. Benkelman joined her husband in the administration of the radio station, WKYO in Caro, where she used her accounting training and business sense to help run the enterprise.
In retirement, she and her husband owned a home near Tampa, FL but they returned to Caseville year-round in 2004. Mrs. Benkelman loved entertaining and spending time with her friends in the Thumb, who knew her as "Smitty". She also enjoyed researching family histories and other topics on the Internet. She was naturally computer-savvy, often helping her friends with computer setups and fixing their Internet connections.
Her husband preceded her in death September 22, 2006 as did her sister, Carole Ann Penturf in 1992 and a grandson, Keith Brooks in 2006. 189 Amos Pierce was born in Vermont, July 31, 1784, where he spent his boyhood days. Removing from Vermont, he settled in western New York, where he was engaged in blacksmithing, proving himself an expert in making the first bolts and ironwork on the New York and Erie canal. In 1811, he was married to Miss Mary Sanford. She was born in 1790, and died September 30, 1845. His second marriage was to Mrs. Evaline Woods. Mr. Pierce removed from New York to Ashtabula county, Ohio. He came to Illinois in 1834, and bought a quarter section of land in Knox county. The village of Altona is located on this same quarter. After he had bought it, he became dissatisfied, as there was no timber on the land. He then sold it and went to St. Augustine, where he met with some old settlers who went with him to Greenfield (now Greenbush), where he bought land south of the village, on section 7. Here he built his log house of three rooms, and here he spent the remainder of his days, farming, blacksmithing, and running a sawmill on Nigger creek, a short distance south of his residence. This mill was built by Cornelius Clover, who then resided near St. Augustine. It was run by water-power, and had an up-and-down saw. The log was drawn against the saw with a wheel, having notched segments on the outer circle and wood pins on the side. When the board was sawed, the sawyer stepped on the pins to return the log. This action was called "treading back the ragwheel.'' Many of the old settlers procured lumber here to use in the construction of their houses, and for other purposes. The old mill played its part in the early days, and then passed into decay. It is said that at the home of Amos Pierce strangers and friends were welcome alike, and that his home was a refuge for the colored man on his way to Canada for freedom. He was industrious, and stood for temperance, education, progression, and a liberal religion; and was a member of the Universalist church. In politics he was a republican. He died July 20, 1872.

Amos Pierce, the subject of this sketch, was the seventh in descent from Thomas Pierce, the emigrant ancestor of this branch of the Pierce family. Thomas Pierce came from England to this country, in 1633, with his wife Elizabeth, and settled in Charlestown, Mass.

190 Ancestry.com indicates that the Lubenia McLemore, born 1911 in Louisiana per the 1940 Victoria County, Texas census would likely be the same person as Luvenia DeSoto, also born 1911 in Louisiana, and listed as a daughter of Marcel and Ora DeSoto of DeSoto Parish, Louisiana on the 1930 Census. Based on her first name, year and location of birth, and the fact that the family later returned to west Louisiana, this seems to be a likely conclustion, but has not yet been proved through a birth, marriage or death vital record. De Soto, Luvenia D. (I46752)

193 Email received on November 29, 2007: "I haven't connected Cassius "Cash" Fisher to my Fisher's yet, but am sure there is a connection. Especially since I carry both Fisher & Huffman blood and his grandmother was a Hoffman (now spelled Huffman here). Just haven't made the connection yet.

Anyway, to let you know Cassius "Cash" Fisher was born in Hamilton County Indiana (as far as I could find as was the rest of his siblings). He married Inez F. Kinnaman on 4/18/1914 Marion County Indiana. She was married 1st to William A. Sears on 6/15/1895 Hancock County Indiana and had 4 children with him. She and Cassius had 2 children supposedly but I haven't proved that as of yet or dates for them. Anyway, I just thought that might help you."

198 In December, 2010, Scott Watkins (firedogger@gmail.com) emailed that "Green Berry's younger brother Alfred L, only had two daughters and no sons. The oldest daughter was Mary Ann, who married Amon P. Morris and her younger sister Drucilla Cordelia who married 1) White and 2) Partin. Both Mary Ann(s) are used back in forth between the family lines as well as William W. and Nancy. I started out to prove I was a descendant of Alfred L., only to find out I belong with Green Berry instead."

The 1840 Natchitoches Parish census shows:
J. B. Watkins 0111001000000 222001000000 1 3 1
A. L. Watkins 0000010000000 002001000000
The J. is a G. (census writers?) Both brothers are on the same page, just 10 lines apart. J. B. has 4 males and 7 females. A. L. has 1 male and 3 females. Later census shows Alfred with the same numbers and Green Berry with another daughter.
