3118 I1149  Bridges  Wiley Jones  Abt 1779  Bef 1840  The husband of Jenny Strickland (dau. of Solomon Strickland and Amy Pace) should be Wiley Jones Bridges. Someone once put down James Bridges Sr. on a family group sheet at one point in time and now hundreds of people have that information and no one has documentation for it. So I learned a very valuable lesson about putting down anything on a group sheet that you aren't sure of. It causes confusion down the road. The only thing you can do is continue to stick your neck out and ask questions and continue to search for the documentation yourself as we all are.

1. Family Bible of Ezekiel J. Bridges b. 1817 in Newton Co.,GA states that his father was Wiley J. Bridges and Jane
2. Wiley Jones Bridges lived in Madison Co. on Brushy Creek until about 1815. He is listed in some probate documents of Madison Co. as "Jones" Bridges -- could this be what other researchers saw as James?
3. Wiley Jones Bridges loaned Barnabas Strickland (son of Solomon) $240 and sued him for that amount in 1840 in Jasper Co.,GA
4. Names of some of the children of Wiley Jones Bridges are clues to a relationship with the Strickland family : Ezekiel J., Solomon T., Anselem 'Ancel' S.

I'm still looking for more proof, because no marriage can be found, but I believe that my "proof" stands better under fire, than any other possibility. I did not mean to cast aspersions on anyone else's research. Without previous research we would be starting at ground zero. What may seem like a *small* discrepancy to someone who is not connected to the direct Jenny Strickland line, is not small at all to one who is trying to prove descendancy from that line.

"History of Shelby County Texas" - Matthew Brinson, an early settler of Shelby County, was born 1789 in Onslow County, North Carolina. He died in 1861 in Shelby County.

Matthew left his brothers in Georgia and moved to Autauga County Alabama where he resided, until his migration to Texas in the late 1830's. He was said to have moved to Texas as a widower, bringing with him two young children and two unmarried daughters.

He was also said to have served in the U.S./Mexican War.

He settled first at Shelbyville on a farm consisting of approximately 1500 acres. This piece of land was the subject of much litigation that continued until settled in 1872 (after Matthew's death).

His son in law, Atkin McLemore was said to have carried on the lawsuit in his name.

Frances Clements Lapp noted that "Matthew moved from Shelbyville to the town of Buena Vista, a thriving community in 1844 and is"buried out in the woods and his grave marked by a red rock, nobody will ever find it."

The Ancestry of Mary Ethel Waller shows Matthew died ca. July 1861 in Shelby County, and is likely buried in an unmarked grave at the Berryman Johnson Cemetery in Rusk County, Texas.

Mathew Brinson is also on the 1860 Shelby County, Slave Schedule, page 392, shown as owning over 40 slaves

The census listing below shows a Matthew Brinson, close in age to the Matthew Brinson born ca 1789 in North Carolina, but is most likely another Matthew Brinson, as the Matthew Brinson that moved to Shelby county was said to have died in Shelby County around 1861. If that date of death is incorrect, however, it is possible that our Matthew returned to North Carolina to live with relative.

Gone To His Reward.

Death of Capt. M. J. Brinson, an Old Pioneer of This County. One by one the old landmarks are passing away'97passing to that great beyond from whence no traveler ever returneth. This week we are called upon to chronicle the death of one of Tarrant county's oldest and most respected citizens, Capt. M. J. Brinson, aged 75 years, who laid down the habiliments of life and passed peacefully away last Tuesday night, death resulting from heart disease. Captain Brinson, as he was known, was one of the oldest settlers in this section of the state and was living in Tarrant county while Birdville was the county site. He built the first business house in Fort Worth and has been closely identified with the county's progress and advancement. The funeral services were conducted at the Cumberland Presbyterian church this morning at 10 o'clock, the same being conducted under the auspices of the local Masonic order, of which he had long been a member, and, we are informed, was next to the oldest Mason in Tarrant county. Besides a wife, several grown children survive to whom The Journal extends sincere sympathy and condolence.

3147 I13468  Briseno  Mary  8 Jan 1942  2 Apr 2023  Mary was born on January 8, 1942 in Grand Island, Nebraska to Rosalio and Maria Briseno, the 12th of 13 children. Mary was raised in a devout Catholic family; attended Catholic grade school and was a member of St. Mary's Cathedral parish in Grand Island. She enjoyed being part of a large family and was close to her siblings. She received her teaching degree from the College of St. Mary in Omaha, Nebraska. Upon graduating she became a grade school teacher and taught in Del Rio, Texas before returning to Omaha to continue teaching.

A few years after returning to Omaha she met the love of her life, Lonnie, at a party for young Catholic Adults. They got engaged 6 months later and were married on August 9, 1969, at St. John's Catholic Church on Creighton's campus. Mary became a full-time homemaker with the birth of their daughters, Shawn, Joy, and Alicia. They moved around for several years before settling in Omaha in 1976 and became members of St. Gerald's Parish.

Motherhood, Catholicism, and the sanctity of marriage remained the central focus of her life. Mary and Lonnie became a Marriage Encounter presenting couple and gave hundreds of weekend retreats over a span of thirty-seven years. Mary taught her daughters to be good Christians through her example of serving the church and community. She also taught them how to cook, sew and give presentations. The family enjoyed camping and traveling throughout the United States, visiting many national parks and monuments, and also took frequent trips to visit Mary's family in Grand Island.

Mary returned to school to earn a Master of Science degree in Counseling from Creighton University (1990), and reentered the workforce full-time to serve as a licensed mental health and drug and alcohol counselor. Mary worked for Catholic Charities, Operation Bridge, and eventually, Lutheran Family Services. She became an advocate for the Spanish speaking who required her bilingual counseling services, with some clients driving 60 miles to see her. Mary served as a lector and Eucharistic minister for many years and helped to begin a bible study. She also supported Lonnie in his endeavor to become a Deacon of the Catholic Church, a sacrament they were called to as a couple in 1989. In 2012, Lonnie and Mary opened a private counseling practice that they owned for 12 years. She retired from counseling in 2020.

Mary and Lonnie enjoyed celebrating their marriage and had several memorable anniversary parties. She cherished spending time with her family and taking trips with Lonnie to visit friends, their daughter in Portland, or to vacation in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Her favorite pastime was shopping, but she loved watching the College World Series, television crime dramas, and the news; visiting with friends at book club, prayer club or Bunco; she enjoyed puzzles and she played a cutthroat game of UNO and Sequence.

Her ultimate goal was to live a life that would earn her admission into Heaven. Mary passed peacefully on Palm Sunday, April 2, 2023. She is survived by her loving husband of 53 years, Lonnie Dinneen, her three daughters and their husbands, and nine grandchildren. Shawn (Mike)
Reynolds (Jenna, Katie, Lainey, and Henry), Joy (Chris) Trimble (Brayden and Kylie), and Alicia (Jason) Julian (Ella, Olivia, and Cora).

Rest in Peace Mary! God Bless You! We love you!

POWELL DATA was comkpiled by Frances Powell Otken, McComb, Mississippi.

Josiah Powell, with his wife and seven children moved from Madison County, Georgia to the Mississippi Territory in the late summer of 1817, settling about 5 miles from Summit, Pike County on the east fork of the Tangipahoa River.

JOSIAH POWELL was a First Lieutenant of Captain James Ware's Company of Infantry, 1st (Harris) Regiment, Georgia Militia, War of 1812, served from August 25, 1813 to March 11, 1814. Place of Enlisment not shown. (Ref: U. S. War Department, Adjutant General's Office # 2 055 938)

In the emigration from Georgia, there also came at the same time the Womacks and Stricklands, which would indicate they were long-time friends and neighbors. Colonel Solomon Strickland was from Tyrone County, Ireland, and probably was a neighbor there to Thomas Mackie and perhaps John Brixey. Rachel Mackie Brixey married second Barnaby Strickland, son of Colonel Solomon Strickland and Amy Pace Strickland. These families appear to have stayed together in all their migrations. Family tradition is that John Brixey, husband of Rachel Mackie, was a native of Ireland, and when on a return voyage to his native land, was lost at sea when the ship and all on board went down a short distance off the coast of Georgia. Court records would substantiate this since we find no late records of any kind regarding John Brixey.

Josiah Powell, husband of Janet Brixey, was killed December 28, 1846, by being thrown from a spirited young horse that he had raised. He was en route to Natchez, Mississippi, to purchase supplies, and over the protest of his sons, he insisted on riding the young horse which was frightened by something along the roadside, plunged and rearing, throwing him violently to the ground.

Josiah Powell was a skilled craftsman and cabinet-maker. He made a number of pieces of furniture which are still in the family.

Josiah Powel, (sic) was in Militia District 204 in 1810, Elbert County, Georgia, but when Madison County was formed in 1811, said district fell into Madison County. In one of the early Militia notes, Josiah Powel (named spelled with only one L) gave the year of his birth as 1774. He appears to have lived in that part of Elbert County around Blue Stone Creek, which later became a part of Madison County, Georgia. Land records indicate that Josiah Powel and John Brixey owned adjoining land in Elbert County, Georgia in 1811.

3171 I1338  Brixey  John  Bef 1759  Yes, date unknown  From STIRPES Magazine: John Brixey, Rachel's first husband, was also an immigrant. He had arrived in Philadelphia from London on 31 August 1773 aboard the Snow "Sally", which was captained by Stephen Jones. The Philadelphia Mayor's Court Indenture Book records the sale of John's indenture to Daniel Dudley of Evesham Township, Burlington County, New Jersey. By the terms of his indenture, he was to serve until 31 August 1777, in return for his fare of 18 pounds. Though the two indentures recorded immdiately above his provided for a suit of new clothing at the end of the indenture, John's did not. After serving nearly 18 months of this indenture, John ran away. On 15 March 1775 Francis Dudley advertised in the THE PHILADELPHIA GAZETTE under the heading "Five Pounds Reward...Run away from the subscriber...an English servant man, named John Brixey, about 20 years of age, slim built, and about six feet high, of fair complexion, black hair, and stoops in his walk...He was seen crossing Cooper's Ferry yesterday. He had about Five Pounds in money with him...FRANCIS DUDLY." The amount offered for his capture was about average for a man--or for a horse. A greater reward was usually offered for runaway house servants and those with special skills, suggesting that John was probably a farm laborer

John had a land on Parson's Fork of Silver Creek in Burke County, North Carolina, surveyed on 28 July 1778, eleven months after his indenture was scheduled to end. John was either captured quickly so that his indenture was not lengthened greatly, or he was not captured at all. His land entry was No. 1310, issued as Grant No. 335 on 28 October 1782. John and Rachel probably married 1777-1778 based on the birth of their children, Thomas, John and Janet. Family tradition, neither proved nor disproved, says that John died at sea on his way to England to see about an inheritance in the mid-1880s. Rachel did what most young widows with three young children did. She married a neighbor, Barnabas Strickland, age 19.

3177 I15916  Broach  Caroline Winifred "Winnie"  2 Jan 1886  4 Aug 1943  In his autobiography, Robert Cecil McDaniel wrote that his mother was one of the teachers at Six Mile School, and that she taught in the country schools in and around Six Mile for fifteen years, her last assignment being at a one-teacher school called "Goat Town." During her lifetime she tutored several young people to help them pass the state examination and begin their own teaching careers. She brought 25 or 30 books with her to Sabine County after her marriage in 1907, and they were sometimes used as a public library as most of the other families had nothing more to read than a Bible.

3179 I38073  Broach  Frank Norman  6 Feb 1856  10 Jun 1938  Robert Cecil McDaniel, in his autobiography, wrote that his Broach grandparents owned a boarding house located near the railroad depot in Crawford. His grandfather had a state license to practice law, but McDaniel didn't believe he ever followed the legal profession. He may have published a weekly newspaper in Crawford, and before the Model T days, he owned a livery stable. McDaniel's impression was that his grandfather was more of a "dreamer" than a "doer" and that his grandmother probably made the living.
