24605 I37871  Wood  Francis  Abt 1837  26 Jun 1863  From FindAGrave:

A Cenotaph in Memory of Francis M. Wood

Francis M. Wood was born about 1837 in San Augustine County, Texas to Elizabeth Muse and Charles Ayers Wood. He died 26 June 1863 in the Civil War, probably in northeast Louisiana near Vicksburg, MS, burial unknown. Military Service: Pvt., Company E 19th Regiment Tex Inf, CSA, "Walker's Greyhounds." The 1850 San Augustine Co. census shows Frances, female, but Howard family history micspoon.tripod.com/nti/nti11685.html mentions a son, Frank, who died in the Civil War.

The 1860 San Augustine Co. census shows Francis Wood (male), age 23, and Eugenia Wood, age 15, in the household of neighbors Thuresa (Thursa) and Richard J. Fonville. Eugenia Fonville and F.M. Wood were legally married 12 July 1860 in San Augustine Co.

There are two Wood children buried next to each other in the Fonville Family Cemetery (Wood Annex). Thursa Elizabeth Wood (1861-1861), Find A Grave 57012631, is probably their daughter and named for her grandmothers. Frances Marion Wood b 1863 d abount 1873, Find A Grave 57012660, was probably named after her father (but could be named for Eugenia's brother): The inscription on her marker reads "Dau. of F.M. Wood & Eugenia Fonville."

Mrs. Eugenia Woods married (2) Argyle Guy Loggins on Dec. 8, 1866 in San Augustine Co. Their Find A Grave Memorials are 19261653 and 19261654.

Frank fought in the same company as his younger brother, A.A. Wood. After marching over 1000 miles back and forth from Arkansas to Mississippi, their division earned the nickname "Walker's Greyhounds." Their first action was on June 7, 1863 at the battle of Millikin's Bend near Vicksburg, MS. There they attacked a supply depot. After initial success against Union infantry, they were repelled by gunboats. They retreated to northeast Louisiana where many died due to disease and malnutrition. This is where Frank is presumed to have died. His service record gives his date of death as June 26, 1863, one week before the fall of Vicksburg.

24635 I37853  Wood  Wilna Marveline  23 Jun 1927  29 Jan 2017  Wilna Wood Broussard came from a long line of Texas families. Her ancestors were some of the first settlers in Texas/Mexico before it became a Republic.

Wilna was born to William T. Wood and Sarah Ann McLemore Morgan in East Texas's Pineland. She had two sisters and three brothers.

Wilna was a painter. She belonged to the China Painters Guild and numerous other art societies. She used oils, pastels and watercolors on canvas. She sold some of her paintings to local art galleries in Oklahoma City and she sold her china painting pieces to boutique shops in the Midwest and Florida.

Wilna attended Beaumont High and then her family moved to Panama City, Florida and Georgia during WWII. Her father was a shipbuilder. Wilna worked for the USO during the war and was a secretary at a military HDQ in Cape Cod, MA for a few years.

After the war she returned to Beaumont where she met and married Weston J. Broussard. They had three daughters. The family lived in Beaumont where Weston was manager of International Cresote and Construction Company until 1968 when he took a job with Kerr McGee Oil Company and became Vice President of Kerr McGee Chemical. The family then moved to St. Louis, Missouri and then to the company's HDQ in Oklahoma City, OK. They lived there until retirement in 1987.

Wilna enjoyed being a homemaker and her china and canvas painting activities. She sold some of her painting to art galleries in OKC. She also enjoyed her activities at the Petroleum Club in OKD, of which she and Weston were members.

In 1987 upon retirement, Wilna and Weston moved to Grapevine, Texas to be near one of their daughters. The whole family enjoyed coming to visit "Meme and Papa" and barbequing and swimming in their backyard pool.

Wilna is preceded in death by her husband Weston, two sisters and two brothers. She has one surviving brother in North Carolina.

Wilna is survived by her daughters Anne (McFadden-Dan) of Iowa; Mary (Decato-Al) of Grapevine; and Jerri (Forrest-John) of Iowa. She has four grandchildren ? Robert, Erin, Brigitte, Cristie and two great grandchildren. A graveside service will be held Wednesday at 3:00 pm.

24638 I10376  Woodlief  Sarah  Bef 1696  Yes, date unknown  Sarah's grandfather was John Woodlief Jr, the father of John, Edward, and George Woodlief. It is a known fact that the Woodlief and Poythress families intermarried. In September 1717, Sarah's father, Mr. Edward Woodlief, became sick and realizing his time was at hand, made his will disposing of his wordly estate. He died in the early part of the next year. His will was filed February 10, 1718. He bequethed to Sarah one heifer, calling her "daughter Pace" in the will. At a Court Held at Merchants Hope for Prince George County 8th December 1719 p. 302 Sarah Pace, wife of Richard Pace, relinquished her dower in land sold by her husband to Thomas Goodwyn.

When Sarah's husband Richard died, he left her an unusual bequest, his set of pistols. This is not the sort of legacy a man normally leaves to a female regardless of her relatioship to him, which makes the author believe they were considered among his prized possessions. It is unknown, because of the loss of records, how long Sarah lived or what became of their estate.

The author added that it was with great difficulty, through many years of search, to discover the names of only a few of their children. Once again, it could only be accomplished through a process of elimination by a close study of the existing records of the area. Richard was the only male member of his family, meaning the son's of James and Elizabeth, that remained in Prince George County. The others had all gone to North Carolina. The children of Richard and Sarah were Richard, Francis, and John. It is also believed that Sarah, wife of John Bonner, and Elizabeth, wife of Richard Biggins, are also children, but this has not been proven to any degree of satisfaction. (p. 130)

Their date of birth does not fit with census records. Barbara S. Wright, on her website, posted: "He came to Texas in 1840 with his brother Seborn Woods. He had 12 children by first marriage. His name is on the muster roll in 1862 of Company B,13Yh (Burnett's) Texas Calvery Woods, were privates. There are more Woodses in Newton County ,than any other name. The McMahons had the largest connection, but they came from eight different children, while the Woods came from only two heads. The Woods family is not only one of the largest families in the county ,but they are also one of the most useful and respected. The Woodses are mostly Baptist. He is buried in the Woods Cemetery , near Burkeville, Newton Co. Tx. "

FindAGrave lists his full name as William Allen Woods, but it appears only Allen is engraved on his tombstone, which also shows he was "aged 73 Ys 6 Ms & 16 Ds."
