Ary White had a twin sister named Elizabeth "Bessie" White. (My aunt is named "Ary Elizabeth" after them). Due to whatever circumstances, they weren't always in the same household growing up making it tough to research." On the 1880 census, Ary and Bessie, both shown as age 3, where living with W. W. Moore and Ary A. Moore in Pike County, Mississippi. They were listed as Nieces of Ary Moore. Two of their cousins, also lived with WW and Ary Moore, 15 year old Ida Felder, and 7 year old WIll Gardner On the 1900 Federal Census enumeration, Bessie, age 23, as living with her parents in McComb, Mississippi. She was shown as being born in Jan 1877 in Mississippi. In the next household, Ary Martin, the wife of Albert, was also shown as born in Jan 1877 in Mississippi. She and Albert had been married for one year. Shown in Louisiana, Wills and Probate Records, 1775-1984, Succession File No. 2322-2380, 1914-1915, for Mary C. White, as one of eight surviving children of her parents, viz "Mrs. Bessie McMichael, wife of A. W. McMichael, residents of Alexandria, Rapides Parish, Louisiana." On the Louisiana Statewide Death Index, Elizabeth White McMichael was shown as born ca 1877. The US Social Security Applications index shows her exact date of birth as 6 Jan 1877 in Summit Pipe (sic), Mississippi, and her parents as William T. White and Mary C. Felder. |

I believe that James and Drucilla are the most likely parents of Mary, but there are several discrepencies that should be resolved if possible. 1) The fact that Gram Ferguson's wife was a White is supported by this entry in "Sabine County Marriages 1875-1900 1900-1910 Prior to 1875" by Blanche Toole: White, Mary E to Green B Ferguson ca 1870 However, Green is Gram's twin, and it appears he actually married Lucy Bean in Orange County (source: Pam Mahon, family researcher) 2) A Mary E. S. White is listed on the 1850 Sabine County census as a two year old born in Louisiana in the household of James E. White and Drucilla C. (Watkins) White (#258-258), along with younger sisters Drucilla and Cordelia. However, the Mary Elizabeth Sophronia White shown as the wife of Gram Berry Ferguson by Katherine Freistat is shown as being born 6 years later, in 1854. 3) Another mystery is why she is not listed with her mother, Drucilla, and stepfather, John C. Partin, in the transcript of the 1860 Sabine County census by Helen Gomer Schluter. Her sisters Theodosia and Cordelia are listed. The actual microfilm should be reexamined. She would have been only 12/13 at the time, so it is doubtful she was already married. If she was not married, this means she had either died or was living with another family in 1860. Her grandparents, Edward and Elizabeth (Strickland) White were living in Sabine County in 1860, and an 11 year old girl, shown as L.E. White born in Texas, was living with them, according to the transcript of the 1860 census prepared by Mrs. Helen Gomer Schluter. Could this have actually been M.E. White? There is a discrepency in her birthplace, Texas vs. Louisiana. However, both she and her grandparents might have forgotten that she was born in Sabine Parish and not Sabine County. Additionally, L.E. White does not show up again. She may have either died or married after 1860, and may have indeed married Gram. 4) On a transcript of the 1870 Census of Sabine County (Blanche Toole), Household #25/25 lists: Ferguson, G. 21 M W Farmer Texas " , Mary E. 16 F W K.H. Texas This would make Gram's wife born circa 1854, not circa 1848 as is shown by Katherine Freistat. I read the actual microfilm, and the ages on the transcript match those on the microfilm. It is possible that the census taker made a mistake when recording her age, or that Mary gave him incorrect information. It could also be that Gram's wife is someone other thatn Mary White, the daughter of James White. |

She battled myriad health issues for many years, demonstrating enormous courage and will to live. She was born December 10, 1940 in the piney woods of East Texas to Bill & Abilene White. She was the only girl, sandwiched between two brothers, Kenneth & Benny. Oldest brother, Don, died as an infant during the great Depression before her birth. She was a beloved sister to both her brothers and the apple of her daddy's eye. She married very young, at age 15 to a young sailor boy from Hemphill who had just returned from a tour of duty in Korea. She and Robert Earl Reeves had two daughters together. Their oldest daughter, Lynn, was born just two months after Neva turned 17. In spite of being a young wife and mother, she graduated top of her class from Bronson High School in 1958. Second daughter, Les, followed in the fall of 1961. Neva and Robert Earl divorced in 1963. She worked for the Starr Family in Hemphill and for Sabine County in the County Clerk's office in the 50's & 60's. She later went to work for the State of Texas doing lab work for brucellosis testing on cattle where she met a rugged cowboy named Harlan Alexander. They were married on their way to a rodeo in August of 1968. Harlan brought two daughters into the marriage, Tammy & Connie. Together, Harlan and Neva had a baby girl who was stillborn in April of 1970. They continued to work for the State of Texas testing cattle for a couple years but the relocating from county to county was hard on family life so after a stint in Crockett and then Livingston, they moved to Jasper and settled in 1970 where she lived for the remainder of her life. In 1973, another baby girl, Leah was born. Their "yours, mine & ours" family was complete with 5 daughters. Neva worked for Sandy Roane Insurance and then for many years at the Jasper County Courthouse ? in the County Tax Assessor's office and later as secretary to the County Judge. Her greatest joy in life came from being Gran. She was Gran to many, many young people but the official grandchildren in her life were Cody & Craig Richardson, Ross & Ryan Dickerson, Alexis Nasche, Hannah Hensarling, Jasi Shaw Worden, and Lane & Bret Shaw. Her life was surely extended by the birth of great grandson Beau Crofford Worden last March. Neva was plagued with serious health issues for much of her adult life. She suffered for many years from chronic pain caused by scoliosis and many unsuccessful back surgeries. Additionally, she lived with a life-threatening blood clotting disorder, suffered a stroke in her mid-40's, had ovarian cancer, colon cancer before being diagnosed with lung and breast cancer in the Fall of 2018. At the time she was told to expect to live 6 months to a year. She lived 3 ? more years. Life was never easy for Neva but she was a trooper. Neva had beautiful handwriting; folded clothes neatly and precisely; made her bed every day; was a stickler for tidiness; loved Diet Cokes, puzzles, reading and watching food shows on TV. In her final years, she loved her ipad where Facebook gave her a window to the world and allowed her to be in community with many friends. Her happiest hours were spent sitting in the bleachers at youth rodeos watching Jasi, Lane and Bret compete. She was predeceased by her family of origin ? her daddy & mother, brothers, infant daughter Tony Deneva and grandson Ryan Hunter Dickerson. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Harlan Alexander, daughters Lynn Reeves Dickerson (Ron), Leslie Reeves Nasche (Pam Gentry), Leah Alexander Shaw (Jason), step daughters Tammy Alexander Hensarling (Jimmy) and Connie Alexander Richardson (Mike); 7 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. The family wishes to thank Harbor House Hospice and especially Kenzi, Marci and Lori for their excellent loving care. Visitation will be Saturday, January 8, from 5pm -8pm at Stringer Funeral Home with services following on Sunday, January 9 at 2pm. Graveside following at Evergreen Cemetery. White was a truck driver for propane gas and a member of the Pine Park United Pentecostal Church. He is survived by his wife, Lois White of Hemphill; sons, Rex D. White and his wife Teresa of Hemphill and Ronald L. White and his wife Mae of Humble; daughter, Lisa M. Page and her husband Michael of Hemphill; brothers, Billy Jo White and Fred White, both of Hemphill; sisters, Frances Denby of Huntington, Mary Adams of Conroe, Betty McGown of Hemphill, Carolyn Erwin of Huntington, and Jane Hill of Hemphill. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Salena Williamson and husband Darrell, Carissa Ferguson and husband Bryan, Sean, Melissa, Sabrina and Logan; and great-grandchildren, Landen, Baylee and Jaeda. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Selena; and brother, Charles White. Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 6, in the Pine Park United Pentecostal Church. Wayne was a lifelong resident of Sabine County and a graduate of West Sabine High School. He moved to San Antonio in the 1990's where he worked as a Rail car Inspector for Union Pacific Railroad for 21 years. He was a Master Mason and member of Masonic Lodge #935 in Brookeland, Texas for 28 years and also a member of The Brotherhood of Railway Carmen Lodge #6452. Wayne is survived by his daughter, Katelyn White, of San Antonio, Texas; his brother, Kenneth "Plunket" White, of Pineland, Texas; his nephew, Mark White and wife, Angie, of Pineland; and great nephews, Mark White, Jr. and Corey White, both of Pineland. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Talmadge White. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday evening, April 24, 2017 at Starr Funeral Home, 510 Starr St., Hemphill, Texas. "Tidlow" White, 76, of Route 1, Pineland, died at 3:08 p.m. Thursday, May 21, 1998. White was born Oct. 24, 1921 in Sabine County as a son of the late Robert W. and Florence White and had been a lifelong resident of the area. He was a veteran and retired member of the timber industry . White was a member of the Methodist faith. Survivors: a daughter, Gayle JOHNSON of Longview; a son, Bob White of Pineland; and four grandchildren, Kellie Johnson, Kristy Johnson, Robert White, and Colton White. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the chapel of the Starr Funeral Home Inc. in Hemphill with Bro. John C. Dowden, pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Hemphill and Bro. T. A. Lane, pastor of the Sandy Creek Baptist Church, officiating. Interment was at Pine Hill Cemetery in Sabine County. Pallbearers: Kenneth E. She was carried to . . . hospital in Jasper (and then) transferred here to the home of her son, Mr. V.E. McLemore of San Augustine, where she passed away on June 11, 1939. She was born December 27, 1859 at Hemphill. She joined the Baptist church when a young girl and was a faithful Christian worker all of her life. She married to J.F. McLemore on December 13, 1883 and was the mother of eight children, four boys and four girls. Six children survive: namely V. E. McLemore, San Augustine; Earnest and Ira McLemore, Miss Mellie McLemore, and Mrs. Herman Commack of Gravel Hill, and Mrs. Mermon Speights of Hemphill. She is also survived by seventeen grandchildren and three great grandchildren. In addition to relatives, local people attending the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. T.F. Read, Mr. and Mrs. E.B. Jacks, Mr. and Mrs. John D. Clark, Mr and Mrs W.F. Stephenson, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Burkhalter, Mrs. Rosalie Polly, W.L. Polly, Mr. and Mrs. Rob Horn, Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Mitchell, Mrs. E.M. Boyett, Theo Boyett and others." Melinda McLemore Strong has a maroon and white quilt made by Ruth circa 1880. At Ruth's death, the quilt was passed on to her daughter Millie. Millie added a calico border to the quilt edges which had apparently frayed. At Millie's death, the quilt was passed to her older brother, Vessie McLemore. After Vessie and Nina died, Evon McLemore Tisdale used the quilt. She later gave it to her niece, Melinda McLemore Strong. |

Dr. Wyatt entered her larger life on June 23, 2001, in Nacogdoches, Texas. She was born November 12, 1908, on the White Plantation in the Gravel Hill Community in Sabine County, the daughter of Henry Ernest White and Sarah Evelyn Boyd White. She is survived by a son, Gayle D. Wyatt, of Nacogdoches and several cousins, nieces and nephews. A native East Texan, Dr. Wyatt taught British Romance and Victorian literature at Stephen F. Austin State University for twenty-five years. Prior to joining the SFA faculty, she taught and served as a high school teacher and principal in public schools; and while on leave from SFA for doctoral work, she held a teaching fellowship at Rice University. It is noted in the Bob Bowman's book, THE MYSTERY OF LADY BOUNTIFUL, that Sibyl White became principal of Hemphill High School in the 1940s and was perhaps the first woman in Sabine County to earn a Ph.D. (Bowman, p. 55). |

On November 13, 1833, between midnight and dawn, thousands of meteors showered the sky over North America. To the native peoples of the land, it appeared that the stars were falling out of the heavens. Some thought it was the judgment day. Others called it "The Night the Stars Fell". A young girl who was a slave at the time of the event said "Somebody in the quarters started yellin' in the middle of the night to come out and to look up at the sky. We went outside and there they was a fallin' everywhere! Big stars coming down real close to the groun' and just before they hit the ground they would burn up! We was all scared. Some O'the folks was screamin' and some was prayin' we all made so much noise, the white folk came out to see what was happenin'. They looked up and then they got scared too." The celestial phenomenon called "the most impressive and awesome display ever recorded" was, in fact, the Leonids meteor shower seen in one of its most impressive years. Viewers witnessed 50,000 to 150,000 meteors per hour, only equaled by the November 17, 1966 display, when the Leonid shower brought 150,000 meteors per hour. Debris from the comet Temple-Tuttle that orbits the sun every 33 years causes the shower. She was born and raised in Amite County, Mississippi, and can be found on the 1850 census with her parents. Sometime after that, the family moved to Sabine County, Texas. After her husband's death, she lived with her oldest son, William Hardy Travis. She can be found living with he and his wife, Grace Ener, at the time of the 1900 and 1910 Sabine County census. |

Virginia, or as she was fondly called, Deet by her family and friends, was born on May 16, 1932 in Pineland, Texas to George Burtis Whitehead and Eunie Bell Manning Whitehead. She was born into a large family of hardworking parents near the end of the great depression. She and her brothers and sisters attended Bethel Baptist Missionary Church while growing up. Virginia was a 1950 graduate of Pineland High School. Shortly after graduation, she met and married Cecil Forest White (Dink). They were married for 25 years before his death in 1974. After his death, she stopped being a housewife and began her career. She worked as a secretary for Starr Funeral Home for 40 years before retiring in 2020. In her many years of work, she cared deeply for the members of her community and would try to help them in way she could. Virginia is survived by her three daughters and their families who adored her; Charlotte White of Orange, Sharon White of Center, and Sandy Perkins and husband, Jay, of Hemphill; her grandchildren who lovingly called her Nanny, Shannon Lane of Lake Jackson, Nick Lane and wife, Theresa, of Orange, Sharisse McAdams and husband, Josh, of Center, Jake Perkins and wife, Grace, of Hemphill, Jeremy Daniels of Beaumont, and Ashton Childress and husband, Cody, of Hemphill; great grandchildren, Shalynn & Kolby, Ty'Teirra, Alyx, Embry, Aryn, Sullivan, Layla and Haze; and great great grandson, Elijah; sisters, Ollie Bell Jordan of Pineland and Gloria (Buckie) Whitehead of Carthage; and numerous much loved nieces, nephews, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Eunie Whitehead; husband, C. F. (Dink) White; brothers, Sid Dickerson, Burtis Whitehead, Clifton (Giddern) Whitehead, Charles (Beedlow)Whitehead, Larry Whitehead and Harold Whitehead and sisters, Gladys Whitehead and Nelda Lou Whitehead. Her family will welcome friends and family for visitation from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Saturday, May 29, 2021 at Starr Funeral Home, 510 Starr Street, Hemphill, Texas. Funeral services will begin at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, May 30, 2021 in Starr Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Floyd Wright and Bro. Curtis White officiating.
