He was one of 15 children in the family, being the 13th child. Bill attended Randolph Public School, graduating from the 8th grade. He worked for farmers throughout his life. His last job was employment with West Brothers Construction until he retired. Bill met Darlene (Vodicka Johnson) while visiting his brother and niece in Fairmont. They were united in marriage on December 17, 1976 at St. Helena's Catholic Church in Grafton, NE. He had a readymade family with 5 stepdaughters. Bill enjoyed gardening, walking, riding his 3 wheel bike, visiting, playing cards (especially Skip Bo), and teasing. He also was a big Husker fan! Bill is preceded in death by his parents, 10 brothers, 4 sisters, sister-in-laws, Donna Scheil and Linda Vodicka, and by a beloved grandson Scott Christian Garrigan. He is survived by his wife, Darlene Daws of Fairmont, stepdaughters and son-in-laws, Desiree (Chris) Bennett of Weatherford, TX, Renee (Chris) Sluka of Roseland, NE, LaRae (Don) Garrigan of Pacifica, CA, Charlene (Joseph) Magrini of Crystal Lake, IL, and Michelle (Brian) Drahota of Lincoln, NE. Granddaughters, Shilah Garrigan of Midland, TX and Whitney Drahota of Lincoln, NE, grandsons Seth Garrigan of Pacifica, CA, Ryan Sluka of Roseland, NE and Dominic Magrini of Crystal Lake, IL and numerous nieces and nephews. Services for Willard "Bill" Daws will be held Saturday, August 13, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at the St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Geneva, Nebraska. Rosary will be at 1:30 p.m. prior to the Funeral Mass at the Church. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friday, at the Farmer & Son Funeral Home in Geneva. Burial will be in the Fairmont Public Cemetery. Memorials are directed to the Family. |

He attended technical school in construction at Milford. Surviving are his wife, Ruby, Nebraska City; children, Sandy Spevak and husband Robert, Diann Clinkenbeard and husband Dan, and David, all Dunbar; Dennis and wife Sandie, Kenneth and wife Brenda, and Don and wife Denise, all Nebraska City; Steve and wife, Betty, and Ron and wife Lori, all Unadilla; and Robert and wife Julie, Weeping Water; 44 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren and a sister, Alice Butler, Warrensburg, Mo. He was preceded by sisters Henrietta Kubicek and Mildred Vodicka; brothers Joe and James Vodicka and granddaughter, Stacey Vodicka. Memorials in lieu of flowers are suggested to the Milligan Rescue Unit. Norma Jean (Vojta) Nadherny age 84 of Milligan, NE passed away in Lincoln, Ne on January 20, 2017 surrounded by loved ones. Norma was born Feb. 13, 1932 in Friend, NE to James and Georgia (Elznic) Vojta. Norma graduated from Friend High School. She was employed by Russell Stover Candies of Lincoln, NE prior to her marriage. Norma married Arnold J Nadherny on Oct. 9, 1954 in Friend, NE. To this union, three children were born ? Carol Jean, Marvin Arnold and Nancy Ann. She was a dedicated farmer's wife, and enjoyed raising chickens & ducks. She had a bountiful vegetable and flower gardens. The family always looked forward to homemade noodles, bread and kolaches. A story about her making black bottom cupcakes will be a family memory forever. She took pride in delivering delicious meals to the field during planting and harvest. Arnold & Norma enjoyed their winter trips to Las Vegas and a couple trips to Hawaii. Spending time with grandchildren was special to her. Norma was a member of the Milligan Woman's Club, and Milligan Legion Auxiliary. Norma was preceded in death by her parents, parents-in-law, son Marvin and sister-in-law Emily Nadherny. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Arnold; daughters Carol (Eldon) Ogorzolka and Nancy (Larry) Barrow both of Lincoln, NE; grandsons Dan and Michael Nadherny of Milligan, NE; Brian Nadherny of Rushville, NE; granddaughters Jenny Ogorzolka of Cleveland, OH; Kristi (Brian) Ekasala of Lake Worth, FL; Brooke Barrow of Manhattan, KS; great-grandchildren Avery and Hunter Ekasala. Clinton Melvin Volkmer, passed into eternity on Sunday February 19, 2012 at the Haven Home in Kenesaw NE at the age of 80 years. Clinton was born on April 4, 1931 on a farm near Shickley Nebraska to Adolph and Leona (Schmock) Volkmer. He was a 1948 graduate of Geneva High School. In 1952, Clint was drafted into the US Army where he served his country stationed in Alaska during the Korean War. After his discharge from the Army in 1954 he returned to Nebraska. On August 22, 1955 he married Ruby Jirkovsky and to this union came five children. Clint farmed southeast of McCool Jct. for most of his life until 1984 at which time he retired from farming and went to work for the York County Rural Public Power. In May 1990 his wife of 34 years Ruby died of cancer. Clint continued to live on the farm and working in York until he fully retired in 1994. In 1995 he married Dee Rosenberry and moved to Columbus NE. Clint enjoyed farming and the friendships that came along with living in that area for most of his life. He was proud of his time served in the Army. He enjoyed family gatherings, listening and watching Husker football on Saturdays and listening to his favorite polkas on Sunday. During his retirement he enjoyed visits with family, bowling, fishing, playing cards, and tending to the yard and landscaping. He will be greatly missed by all! Clint is survived by his wife Dee of Columbus NE and his five children and their spouses: Terry Volkmer and wife Vicky of Bellevue WA, Janet Radcliff and husband Rex of Beaver Crossing NE, Kelly Smith and husband Doug of York NE, Doug Volkmer and wife Sue of Lincoln NE, and Laurie Hillmer of York NE. Clinton is survived by 12 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren as well as his sister Pat Bredenkamp of York NE. Also survived by sister-in-laws, Vivian Volkmer of Geneva NE, Phyllis Volkmer of Beatrice NE, and brother-in-law Kenneth Arp of Lexington NE. He was preceded in death by his wife Ruby, brothers Dallas, Gilbert and Duane and by his sister Ramona. |

She and her parents and two sisters moved to Shickley, where they also farmed, when she was still an infant. The family later moved to their family farm near Milligan. She completed her grade school education in District #25. She graduated from Exeter High School in 1936, and after graduation taught school in York and Saline Counties. She moved to Lincoln, where she worked at the Miller and Paine's Department Store. During World War II, she worked at the Cushman Motor Works, working on the bomb fuse assembly line, later transferring to the office. She left their employment after her marriage to Wally Johnson of Friend in 1948. She and Wally worked at the Vogue Theater which he owned and the Friend Sale Barn, which they purchased in 1954. In 1957, they began to collect antique autos, and later opened an antique shop. They traveled extensively throughout the United States and foreign countries. (Milligan, p 322). In Loving Memory Of V. Vivian Johnson V. Vivian Johnson was born in Fillmore County on a farm near Exeter, Nebraska on February 15, 1919 to William and Rose (Hromadka) Votipka, the third of five children and died Tuesday, January 26, 2010 at the Exeter Care Center in Exeter at the age of 90 years 11 months and 11 days. As a young girl Vivian attended Exeter High School and graduated with the class of 1936. She furthered her education by attending Wayne State Teachers College and earned her teaching certificate. For a time she taught rural schools in Saline and York Counties. On February 14, 1948, Vivian was united in marriage to Carl W. "Wally" Johnson in San Francisco, California. Returning to Friend, Vivian and Wally operated the Vogue Theater in Friend from 1948 until 1957 and in 1960 they started Johnson's Antique Shop. Over the years they became quite the "experts" in collecting and acquiring various antiques, especially antique automobiles. Vivian had great fun wearing antique clothing to go with the car when they would ride in parades or car tours. She also often put on "style shows" to show off the antique clothing. Together they enjoyed extensive traveling as well. Vivian was an excellent cook and enjoyed entertaining her family, cookies were always available when you stopped in to visit. Vivian is remembered by her nieces and nephews as being the authority. If Aunt Vivian said to do it, it was done. Vivian was a member of the United Church of Christ the American Legion Auxiliary in Friend and a former member of the Congregational Church in Exeter. Vivian spent many hours working with the card recycling at the Friend Manor. She is survived by her brother, Bill Victor, Northridge, CA, sister, Wilma Murphy, Exeter, sister-in-law, Doris Conti, Mountain View, CA, several nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. Vivian was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Wally in 1985 and sisters, Lucille Wright and Helen Hayes. A Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 30, 2010 at the United Church of Christ in Friend with the Revs. Tim and Ginny Adams officiating. She graduated from Exeter High School in 1933, and taught in country schools south of Exeter. On June 17, 1940, she married Leo W. (Swede) Murphy, her high school sweetheart. They enjoyed 49 years together, raising six children on the family farm. While their children attended St. Stephen's Catholic School, Wilma was active in the Home and School Association. In the early 1960's she worked at the Exeter Rexall Drug store. When Memory Manor opened in 1965, she was on the first staff of caregivers, then worked as secretary for her sons at Murphy Plumbing and Heating until 1984. After Swede died in 1989, Wilma continued to live in the house they built when they were married, until she moved to the Exeter Care Center at age 90. Throughout her life, she was an inspiration with her strong faith, graceful demeanor, and love of family. Kolaches, canasta, cooking and crafts are among the many things Wilma shared with family. With dozens of grandchildren and great grandchildren, she always had plenty of visitors, as well as activities to attend. She enjoyed her many friends, including those in bridge and pinochle groups, fitness classes, St. Stephen's Altar Society and Exeter Woman's Club. Wilma enjoyed travel, reading, and working crossword puzzles. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, three sisters, and a son-in-law. She is survived by her brother, Bill Victor of Northridge, California; three daughters and sons-in-law, three sons and daughters-in-law; 17 grandchildren and 35 great grandchildren. Her children and their spouses are: Kathleen and Bob Harre of rural Exeter, Bill and Carol Murphy of Crete, Tim and Sherrill Murphy of Omaha, Kriss and Gib Fendrick of Omaha, Barry and Sylvia Murphy of Exeter, and Rose and Dan Vodvarka of Lincoln. Funeral services 10:30 a.m., Tuesday at the St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Exeter. Rosary services Monday, at 7:30 p.m. at the Farmer Funeral Home in Exeter,NE. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from Sept. 10, 1946, to Dec. 30, 1947. He moved from North Bend to Fremont in 1951 and was employed at Hormel Foods Corporation. He returned to North Bend and operated the Dairy Dream from 1965 to 1972. In 1976, he returned to Fremont and owned and operated Len's Liquor Store until 1982. He married Helen Vavak on Dec. 29, 1951, at St. John's Catholic Church in Prague. He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Fremont, American Legion Post 20 of Fremont, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8223 of North Bend and was a former member of the North Bend Volunteer Fire Department. Survivors include: his wife; a son, Leonard Vyhlidal Jr. of Fremont; two daughters, Carol (Mrs. Doug) Dale of Fremont and JoAnn (Mrs. Francis) Zakovec of Morse Bluff; a sister, Leona Loehr of Fremont; five grandchildren, Jeff and Jason Dale, Mike Albert, Ryan and Brent Zakovec; and four great-grandchildren, Allison, Abbey and Ethan Dale and Haley Zakovec. Born to parents, Robert and Mary Ellen (Cada) Wadzinski, in Schuyler, NE, Ross was on the move early-from the toddler who escaped and made his way down to the Felco gas station, to the Schuyler Junior High, teen taking first place in the 400-meter dash at the state track meet. He was fast. In earlier years, Ross enjoyed winter sledding, summer firecrackers, and fishing at the family cabin in Fremont, NE. While he grew to appreciate different music than his father, swapping classic rock for rap, he still embraced a family tradition, becoming a fourth-generation cheesemaker for a time. Ross could analyze any mechanical issue, often prepared spicy food (the hotter, the better,) and loved his two children. But neither his passions nor repeated treatment programs could break the grip alcohol and drugs had on his life. Ross is survived by his son, Asher Wadzinski of Sheridan, WY; his daughter, Allison Mueller of Kellogg, IA; his father, Robert Wadzinski (Carole Tillotson) of Newton; his brother, Reid Wadzinski of Newton; and his sisters, Katie Wadzinski of Minneapolis, MN, and Kristine Wadzinski of Columbus, NE. Ross was preceded in death by his mother. Visitation is Sunday, September 8, 2024, 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., at Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton. The funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, September 9, 2024, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, in Newton. There will be a Rosary Service at the church at 10:00 a.m., prior to the funeral Mass. C. Ross. Cass City Chronicle Vol. 21, No. 41 Friday, February 18, 1926 Mrs. Zinnecker's Funeral Held Today Mrs. John Zinnecker passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W.D. Striffler, at Cass City, early Wednesday morning, Feb. 17, after a serious illness of two weeks' duration. Her health has been poor all winter. Funeral services will be conducted at the Striffler residence this (Friday) afternoon by Rev. C.F. Smith. Elizabeth Wagner was born at Pirmesens, Germany on March 19, 1849. At the age of 19, she was united in marriage with John Zinnecker. Mr. Zinnecker came to the United States in 1868, his wife and baby daughter following him a year later. The family first settled at Ionia and later at Carson City. Mr. and Mrs. Zinnecker came to Cass City in 1880 and started farming operations on a farm three miles east of town. They lost their barn and farm produce in the fire of 1881, but were fortunate in saving their home. After a few years, they moved to Cass City where they resided until Mr. Zinnecker's death on June 18, 1924. Mrs. Zinnecker has made her home with her children since that time. She was a member of the Evangelical church at Cass City. She leaves seven children, Mrs. W.D. Stiffler, and Mrs. Lester Bailey of Cass City, Geo. Zinnecker of Montana, Wm. Zinnecker of Deford, Mrs. C.W. Clark of Caro, Mrs. Grover Blades of Big Creek, California, and Mrs. John Thiel of Hobart, Indiana. Two children preceded the mother in death. Gene Samford officiating. Burial followed at Oaklawn Cemetery in Center. He died December 23, 2008, in Newton. He was born October 9, 1920, in Shelby County to Richard and Pearl Permenter Wagstaff, the seventh of nine children. He had been a resident of Sabine County for forty-one years. He volunteered for the Army Air Corp. He trained in Las Vegas at AAF Gunnery School (Spec Sperry Turrets). He was assigned as a tail gunner on a B26 Martin Maruder and flew 56 missions over Europe from bases in England, France and Belgium. He attained the rank of Staff Sgt. and was discharged on July 7, 1945. He worked 39 years as a teacher, coach and administrator in the public schools of Texas. He was employed by Brazosport ISD in Freeport for 11 years, Lufkin ISD for 10 years, and West Sabine ISD for 18 years. During his tenure at Brazosport he earned his Masters Degree from the University of Houston. He retired as superintendent at West Sabine ISD in 1985. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Bettye Bragg Wagstaff of Bronson, daughter Lou Ann Wagstaff of Whitehouse, a granddaughter Cory and her husband Rob Blackmon, great grandchildren Caylor Brynn Blackmon, Brock Wagstaff Blackmon, and Tyler Robert Blackmon all of Brownsboro, a sister Neta Hanna of Jacksonville, brothers-in-law Winfred Wright of Port Neches and Hollis McMullen of Quitman, and many nieces and nephews. Contributions to the Jon Robert Wagstaff Memorial Scholarship Fund, Rt. 3, Box 3037, Bronson, TX 75930 will be greatly appreciated by the family. BENKELMAN by Hilda Jane Stickley Benkelman, Rosina was a German girl who came over to the United States when she was 13. She was the niece of John Schwegler's wife. She met John Benkelman in New York state, when he was visiting relatives. They married and returned to Michigan, and spent the first winter of their married live with Adam and Catherine Benkelman. John built a house in town for he and Rosina. Adam suggested that he and Catherine move to the house in town and John and Rosina stay on the farm. He offered to sell his farm to John and Rosina for $5,000, less the cost of the house in town. John at first declined, but Rosina spoke up, offering to help John with the farmwork so they could quickly pay off the debt. She worked side by side with her husband, like a man, often in her bare feet to save her shoes. They raised wheat and corn. They shocked up the corn in large loose shocks so they could sit inside and husk it after winter set in. Rosina caught a bad cold one winter, which developed into T.B. She was sick all winter and died in the spring. She and John had been married about 8 years. In Art Peck's book, he notes that she was probably a member of the Wahl family of Zell, a village near Bortlingen. Catherine, first wife of John Schwegler, was her aunt. Avid reading beginning in grade school led to the desire to travel and experience the larger world. At age 19, she and a friend she met at girl scout camp toured Europe together, staying in hostiles, traveling by Eurail, joining in with the hundreds of other young people from around the world doing the same. A few years later, after graduating from Western Michigan University with a dual degree in English and Philosophy, she moved to South Korea and served as a Peace Corps volunteer. On her way back home, she stopped in Eugene to visit a friend, fell in love with the mountains and ocean, and decided to make this town her home. Laurie thoroughly enjoyed the outdoors, hiking through the forests, swimming in the lakes, even completing a technical climb to the apex of Mt. Washington. She spent many adventurous days with friends at the ocean, completing over 100 scuba dives, including a shark dive in Fiji. Wanting to have a career that truly helped people, Laurie pursued a Master's degree in Occupational Therapy at the University of Puget Sound. After working for others, she opened a private practice to focus on promoting autonomy of the needs of people with rheumatoid diseases and various types of arthritis. A plaque on her clinic wall described it best: "It's a beautiful thing when a career and a passion come together" During this time Laurie met and married artist and craftsman, Dave Reed. After twenty-four years of marriage, they decided to pursue separate dreams. At the age of sixty-five, Laurie retired, flying to Africa the next day. She was there a month, visiting five countries. Seeing the native animals in their natural setting had been a dream since childhood. Upon her return home, she was diagnosed with end stage ovarian cancer and told, regrettably, that she had only three to six months left of life. Focus was on "getting papers in order". On a flight to Michigan to participate in spreading her deceased brother's ashes, she was seated next to a man flying to South Carolina to visit his son. A week later, on the flight home, the same man, John Sugar, was again seated next to her. They enjoyed their conversations and decided to have dinner together to celebrate this coincidence. They ended up falling in love. To their surprise and delight, Laurie lived another four years, feeling quite well. During this time she traveled, skied in the mountains and swam in the ocean. She wrote a book, laughed and played with her growing family and friends, thoroughly enjoying the new love she stumbled into along the way. Laurie passed away peacefully, in her sleep, on Saturday, February 5, 2022. She was preceded in death by both parents, a sister, and two brothers. She is survived by one brother, eight nieces and nephews and thirteen great nieces and nephews. Arrangements being made by Musgrove Family Mortuary. He is survived by his brothers, Roy Buddy Waldon of Hemphill, Benny Waldon and wife, Dorothy of Alvarado, Texas, Bobby Waldon and wife, Stacy of Hemphill, Steven Waldon and wife, Kim of La Marque, Texas, Robert Dickerson and wife, Donna Kay of Hemphill, Charles Dickerson and wife Patsy of Milam, and Tommy Dickerson and wife, Peggy of Hemphill; sister, Judy Latham and husband, Ronnie of Lufkin and Jeannie Adkison of Hemphill. He was preceded in death by his parents Johnny Waldon and Wilma Jean Latham Waldon Dickerson; and sisters, Claire Denby and Jennifer "Jan" Linzy. A Graveside Service will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 21, 2022 in Springhill Cemetery in Hemphill, Texas under the direction of Starr Funeral Home with Bro. Pat Jacks officiating. Claiborne is the son of Hezekiah Waldrop born circa 1772 and Martha Davenport. Hezekiah Waldrop was the child of John Waldrop b. circa 1732 in Hanover Co., VA and Tabitha Parrish. This family can be traced further back to Michael Waldrop b. circa 1680 in VA. The father of Claiborne Waldroup died in MS after 1850 in possibly Holmes County. Paula Jones, a family researcher, states that Claiborne Parrish Waldrop always spelled his name as WALDROP. No listings for Waldrop or any spelling variation in the Sabine Parish cemetery records. The History of Sabine Parish, Louisiana (author John Belisle, The Sabine Banner Press, 1912) states that "in 1860 the white population of Sabine Parish numbers about four thousant, and there were less than two thousand slaves. There were few really wealthy people in the parish, and many owned not more than one of two slaves. the owners of six or more in 1861 included C. P.
