Vardaman, the Vardaman Family Historian, wrote "according to my records, there is no doubt that Amaziah Vardeman who married Unity Carter was a son of William and Ann (maiden name unknown but possibly Ayers) Vardeman. You asked if I had proof and the answer to that question is no. However, all information that I have states that they were father and son and there is no evidence whatsoever that would lead us to any other conclusion." It appears that Amaziah, and his brother Jeremiah, lived near each other in Pike County, Mississippi at the time of the 1820 census.

The Pike County, MS 1820 census, page 6, shows an "Am. Vardemon." (Ronald Vern Jackson's Index to this census incorrectly lists him as Am Vardemore). His household compositon is as follows: 1 male 16-26 and 1 male 26 to 45 1 female under 10, 1 female 26 to 45

IF this is the home of Amaziah and Una Vardeman, the 16 to 26 year old male could not be a son of theirs, as they were only married 5 years previously. Perhaps a brother or nephew? The female under 10 could be a daughter, name unknown, who was born before Polly. It might even be Polly, although her birthdate is supposed to have been in September, 1820.

Several lines down, Jeremiah Vardeman is also listed on the 1820 Pike County census. The composition of his household is: 1 male age 16-26, 1 male age 26 to 45 4 females under age 10, 1 female age 26 to 45

Leatha Betts (777 West 1000 South Woods Cross, UT 84087 (jlabetts@burgoyne.com)) emailed me that on the BLM land patents page "she found Amaziah Vardeman buying land 10 June 1826, at the Washington land office, 80 acres on Lawrence Co. Miss. Block 29 township 5N Range 10 E. Uney Massey is listed as purchasing land 10 Nov 1840, Block 20, Township 5N Range 10E.."

Jeremiah is again listed in the 1830 Mississippi Index, but neither Amaziah or Una could be found. The only Vardeman's listed in the 1830 Census Index (Irene & Norman Gillis) were as follows: Vardaman, Jno. Adams 00110-23110 Vardeman, Elijah Copiah 10100-10100 Vardiman, JeremiahMadison21010-13100 Vardiman, Sarah Franklin13100-01210

Leatha Betts informs me that the 1830 Pike County, Census was destroyed. This would explain why they are not listed in the index.

At the time of the 1840 Mississippi census, Una appears to be remarried to a Mr. Massey. It appears that Amaziah MAY have died sometime after 1826, when he bought land in Lawrence County, but before 1840, when Una was remarried. There is, however, an A. Vardeman in Adams County, Mississippi in 1840, on page 31. This microfilm should be examined as well. It may be a different person entirely. However, it is possible that Amaziah and Una divorced, and that he moved to Adams County without her.

Kathy Casagranda's "Sabine Parish The 1850 Census With Added Family Information" has Amaziah Vardeman's date of death as circa 3 April 1849. She informed me that this was based on a succession petition filed in Sabine Parish on this date. Leatha Betts emailed me this transcription of the petition. It is from a typewritten copy that was originally given to Lily Carter Thurman by Marie Greer in May 1966.

Succession of A. Vardeman, Eunice Carter, pet. for administration, filed 3 Apr 1849. to the Honorable James Taylor, Judge of 16th Judicial Dist. of the State of La. and Parish of Sabine: Petition of Eunice Carter, of parish aforesaid, respecti. represents that as widow of her deceased husband, Amaziah Vardeman and tutrix of her children, she prays to be appointed adm. of such property of her deceased husaband as beforesaid-etc. C. Chaplin, atty. for petitioner. Appraiser: James Campbell and Wm. I. Herring (?) Oath by Eunice Carter signed by Uney Masse, as adminstratrix. Bond Eunice Carter as principle and Redmund Carter and W. L. White as security on the 14th Apr 1849, witnessed by James Campbell and Amon T. Morris. Property sold at house of Viney or Uney Vardeman, witt. by R.W. Could it be that it simply took more that 10 years to probate the Estate of Amaziah? Note he is listed as "deceased of the State of Mississipppi" and not as a resident of Louisiana. Kathy noted that "sometime folks died and their estate or property wasn't dealt with until the widow remarried or was going to remarry or the children became of age and wanted a partition of the property that belonged in part to them."

It appears that Eunice Carter Vardeman and Una Massa are the same person. When did she remarry, however, and when did Amaziah die? 		 STR06

In the 1830 Index by Irene and Norman Gillis, a Jeremiah is shown in Madison County, Mississippi. His household composition at that time was: 2-1-0-1-0, 1-3-1-0-0

In 1840, a Jeremiah is listed in Holmes County, Mississippi, on page 26

J. Martin posted on Family Search that "Jeremiah served with a Mississippi militia company in the War of 1812 and afterward settled in the southwestern Mississippi County of Copiah, where a number of his relatives lived." 		 STR06

John moved from Bedford County through the New River and Clinch River areas to the west and on into Kentucky. J.H. Spencer's HISTORY OF KENTUCKY BAPTISTS 1775-1885 includes a biography of Jeremiah Vardeman, the youngest son of John and Elizabeth Vardeman. This book DOES NOT HAVE A LIST of the children however. The only specifics are that (1) Jeremiah is the youngest of 12 children and (2) he had brothers named Amaziah and Morgan. J.H. Vardeman of Alpharetta, Georgia suggests that the reason they are cited is that they were also active in the Church at Crab Orchard. Most of the circulated lists name 12 children, including Peter and Thomas Vardeman, but this is in error. Peter is a brother of John's, and Thomas is his son. Some also list a son name Alexander, of whom there are absolutely no records, and "a child who died young." Alexander may be the child who died young.

On 14 July 2001, Leatha Betts emailed me that "The only Vardemans that was in Kentucky earlier than 1789, was John Vardeman and Elizabeth Morgan of Lincoln Co. Kentucky who came out of Bedford Co. Virginia. He arrived in Fayette Co. then to Lincoln Co. Kentucky 20 Jun 1787, where he received land for his Rev. War service. Lincoln Co. Kentucky Deeds Vol. 1 p. 18, 35, 36. book 976.9625 R28m

It looks like he had sons named Peter, Amaziah, Jeremiah, John Jr., Morgan and William Vardiman...(Vardeman/Vardaman/Verdeman/Vardiman are varient spellings found in various land deeds and tax records.) Book "Early Lincoln Co. Kentucky Householders", 1787-1811, 976.9625 R4s. Most of these Vardemans but one stayed in Lincoln Co. Kentucky, however, William Vardeman migrated to Mississippi....possibly with his brother John Vardeman Jr. They took the Oath of Alligence (film 1704224, 6401, p. 192, 1 Dec. 1798, in Miss. Territory Southern Dist. John Vardiman and William Vardaman.

A book called Lexington 1779, Pioneer Kentucky 976.947 H2m, p. 94, has the compiled notes of a Rev.. Shane who was interviewing older people in Kentucky for their memories of the making of Lexington Kentucky History, and he intereviewd a man named Josiah Collins, who had a memory, of traveling with General Clark from Kentucky to Ohio, chasing the Shawnee Indians, "The second night after we left Lexington, a gun went off accidently wounded one of our company. The third day, my captain (William McConnell) solicited me and Hugh Thompson to ride out and try to kill some meat. That night we lay out. The next morning we pursued on and came to the camp ground from behind. As we passed in, we came to a fresh grave at the camp. We were told that when they had stopped in the evening, several hunters had run out to kill game. One man had killed a deer, and was stooping down and gutting it when JOHN VARDEMAN took him for an indian and shot and killed him. They brought him in and buried him. So that there was one killed and one wounded before we got to the mouth of Licking. We there waited a day or so till the regulars and some militia came up in boats from the falls. While we were at now Cincinnati, we threw up a little sort of breast work and put up a sort of little cabin for Capt. Adams to stay in and take care of the invalids and wounded. Cabin right opposite the mouth of Licking. (I think he said left with him five soldiers to guard.) McCracken (Capt. William McCracken dead from what was thought to have been a poisoned arrow) was buried with the honors of war right by the cabin and a log heap burnt over it to conceal the place. McCracken had been out with us in the 1779 expedition. Maj. (George) Walls and his company of horse killed two when we came to the towns. Across the river for a small distance was a level bottom where the Indians attneded their corn. The prairie then extended considerably up the hill. The camp was drawn up in the form of a hollow square right on the bank of the river. The mess on the lower side (down the river) next to the river was right where (in) the yard of an Indian cabin had been. The first night, the Indians carried the opposite bank of the river in the night and fired on that mess and wounded a man. They then fell back and talked from off the top of that hill. Called "Old William." He relocated to an area of "up-country" South Carolina which became part of the old 96th District and, in 1782, Newberry County. It had only been open to settlement for about 30 years and was the frontier with the Cherokee Indians at the time of this arrival. He left a will dated in 1783--probated in 1789--in which he named his current wife and his four sons in order: John, William Jr, Peter and James. Unfortunately, he did not name any of his daughters. William Vardeman and John Vardeman appear on 1810 Census Adams Co. Mississippi and William Vardiman appears on 1816 tax records, in Franklin Co. Mississippi

This appears to be the same William Vardimam (sic) listed in Franklin County, Mississippi (page 37) on the 1820 census index.

Richard (Dick) Vasak, 89 of Santa Monica, California passed away peacefully at home with his beloved wife Helen at his side on January 31, 2024.

He was born October 31, 1934, in Crete, Nebraska to parents Milton and Mary (Payer) Vasak. Dick had one sibling, a sister, Florence Chleboun.

Dick graduated from Crete High School in Nebraska. where he lettered in sports. He then went on to Doane University where he majored in Chemistry and Math. While attending Doane he met the love of his life Helen, the woman who would stand by his side through thick and thin for the next 67 years!

Dick and Helen came to California in 1957 where he attended USC and gained an advanced degree in Electrical Engineering. He went on to work as a Physicist for the Navy, followed by working at Honeywell, and then at West Amp. Later, he and Helen started their own electronics manufacturing company, Glentek Inc. Up until his passing Dick could be found at work every day and often singing classic songs in the hallways.

Dick was involved in many service organizations in Santa Monica over the years. YMCA, Kiwanis, and the Boys and Girls Club of America where he was deeply involved in coaching. Dick was also passionate about coaching his sons in baseball and football. Dick was a lifelong advocate of Doane University and served on the Doane University Board of Trustees in Crete for several years.

Dick was an avid golfer and won the Seniors Tournament at the Riveria Country Club. He enjoyed fishing and hunting, in California, back in his home state of Nebraska or anywhere in the world. But what he loved doing most was traveling with Helen. Together they have traveled near and far. Dick enjoyed going to Dodger games, cooking, watching Trojan and Cornhusker football, and attending his grandchildren's sporting events and activities. Dick was also very proud of his Czech heritage and made sure to pass that on to his son's and grandchildren. Both he and Helen were honored to serve as the King and Queen of the Wilbur Nebraska Czech festival.

Dick was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, brother-in-law, and friend.

He is survived by his beloved wife Helen, son's William, John, and Milton, daughter-in-law Nathalie, grandson's Richard and Brandon, granddaughters, Danielle, Nicole, Melissa, Briana, and Allison, great grandchildren, Ward, Wally, Colt and Juniper, nephews, Michael and Edward Pallesen, niece, Lisa Chelboun Joos, sister-in- law Lorainne Pallesen, and his faithful dog Alice.

He is predeceased by his parents Milton and Mary Vasak, his sister Florence Chleboun and his brother-in law, Charles Pallesen.

"I've lived a life that is full, I traveled each and every highway and more, much more, I did it, I did it my way" ? Frank Sinatra Dick lived his life much like this and will be dearly missed!

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, February 17th, 11:00 A.M. at Grace United Methodist Church, 1245 Juniper Ave, Crete Nebraska

A Celebration of Life will be planned in California at a later date.

Helen was born September 10, 1927, in Prague, NE, to Thomas and Bessie (Soukup) Vavak. Helen taught country school for several years prior to her marriage. She married Leonard Vyhlidal Sr., on December 29, 1951, at St. John's Catholic Church in Prague. They moved to Fremont before moving to North Bend in 1960. Helen and Leonard operated the Dairy Dream in North Bend until 1972. In 1976, they returned to Fremont and owned and operated Len's Liquor Store until 1982.

Helen was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Fremont, and VFW Post 8223 auxiliary. She enjoyed spending time crocheting, and working on puzzle books.

Helen is survived by her son, Leonard Vyhlidal Jr. of Fremont; daughters, Carol (Doug) Dale of Fremont, and JoAnn (Francis) Zakovec of Morse Bluff, NE; 5 grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leonard Sr.; 2 infant daughters; brothers, Tom, Ray, and Frank Vavak.

Private family Funeral Mass will be held at St. Patrick Catholic Church. Burial will be at Memorial Cemetery in Fremont.

ANNA MATEJKA MILLIGAN PIONEER CALLED BY DEATH

Anna Matejka, daughter of the late Katerina and Joseph Vavra, early pioneers in the Milligan community, was born on her parents farm northwest of Milligan, November 26, 1887. She grew up on the farm, attending school in District No. 6.

March 28, 1910, she was united in marriage to Charles Matejka, and this marriage was blessed with four daughters, and one son.

She devoted her entire life faithfully to her home and family. Her love for God's great outdoors was deep and even in declining years as health began failing, she spent much time taking care of trees, garden, flowers, and lawn.

In July, 1943, her husband preceded her in death. She continued living on the farm until her health began to fail and she entered warren Memorial hospital in Friend last January 27. She passed away early Wednesday morning April 9 1969. at the age of 81 years, 4 months and 13 days.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, one sister, Mary Soukup, and two brothers, Joe and Louis.

Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Mollie Nun, Mrs. Georgia Precheil, Mrs. Helene Romero, and Miss Rose Matejka; and one son Alfred. Also surviving are four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Agnes Goodding, and Mrs. Tena Kriener; and three brothers Jim, Fred, and Ed.

Stuart Lee Vavra was born on April 11, 1941, on the family farm north of Milligan, Nebraska, to Edward and Lillian (Kohler) Vavra and passed away on December 28, 2018, at his home at the age of 77 years, 8 months, and 17 days. He was one of three children in the family.

He attended rural school District #6 and graduated from eighth grade. He then attended Milligan High School and graduated in 1958 with a class of seven. Stuart was united in marriage to Janet Ann Garrett, on March 8, 1963, in Geneva, Nebraska. To this union two daughters were born: Jana Marie and Jodene Renae. Together they made their home on the farm northwest of Milligan.

Stuart worked for Lincoln Prestress, Dobson Brothers, Maury Nichols, Fillmore County, and L.J. Webb from working in the oilfields of Wyoming as a roustabout, operating heavy equipment and later building bridges and boxed culverts. He farmed the 80 acres he lived on, but his true passion was fabricating race cars. "Super Stu" started his racing career in 1958 at the age of 17 at Capitol Beach in Lincoln. The first car he ever raced was a 1932 Ford Sedan with an Olds Rocket 88 engine with the #6X. In 1967 he raced and drove a 1936 Plymouth Coupe with the #35 and his last car he ever raced was a 1979 purple Chevy Camaro. He had a very devoted pit crew, sponsors and many fans which made his success possible. During his racing career, he placed in the top ten in season points every year from 1967-1982. He met many dear friends and racers traveling from racetrack to racetrack. In 1982 after 24 years of capturing the checkered flag and competing at 17 different race tracks throughout Nebraska and Kansas, he decided to hang up his racing helmet. Super Stu was inducted into the Beatrice Speedway Hall of Fame on November 1, 2003, was a long-time member of the Central Nebraska Racing Association, and a member of the Good Old Time Racing Association (GOTRA). After Stu retired from circling the racetracks, he spent his later years helping his twin grandsons work on their race cars and giving them advice in his shop over a beer or two. He drew great pride in watching them compete.

He also enjoyed attending his granddaughter's school events, fishing with them, and giving each of them driving lessons. He was extremely proud of all the grandchildren's' accomplishments.

After the passing of Janet, he reconnected with a dear life-long friend, Mary Drake. Their friendship started six decades ago with her late husband, Ike Drake. Stu, Janet, Ike, Mary and all their children shared many years of fun and memories. Over the past five years, Stu and Mary continued to enjoy each other's company and made many more memories.

Stu was preceded in death by his wife, Janet; his parents, Edward and Lillian Vavra; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Pete and Edna Garrett; brother-in-law, Victor Hladky; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Dean and Charlotte Garrett; and niece Shelby Lemke.

He is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Jana and Billy Slezak of Milligan; daughter and son-in-law, Jodene and Tom Lovegrove of Fairmont; grandchildren, Shane and wife Jasmine Slezak; Shawn and wife Jennifer Slezak; Taylor Slezak and fianc? Joey Gilmer all of Milligan; Whitney Lovegrove and Sydney Lovegrove of Fairmont; sister, Shirley Hladky of Seward; brother and sister-in-law, Edwin and Beth Vavra of Milligan; special friend,
Mary Drake of Dorchester and family; great grandchildren Noah, Lily, Kaydence, Jade and Lennon; special furry companion, Zoie; nieces and nephew and a host of other relatives and friends.

A terrific cook and baker and her kolaces, rolls and apple streudel were out of this world. For entertainment of people, she used to tell their fortunes with a deck of cards, and much of what she told people did come true. Mary was widowed at the age of 36, with five children under the age of 13, and did all kinds of odd jobs to hold her family together. For several years she and her youngest son, Joe, lived in the home of an employer, Louis and Alice Koca. Later she went into practical nursing, caring for many elderly people in their own homes, including Mr. Bosak of Crete, The Marsh's of Tobias, Frank Krupicka of Tobias, and Jan Luzum of Milligan. Belva Vickers Beall

Belva Vickers Beall, 97, of Milam died Saturday, Oct. 16, 1999, at her residence on Texas Hwy 87.

Born March 21, 1902, in Milam as a daughter of the late Vance and Jo Ann (Reeves) Vickers, she was a lifelong area resident. Mrs. Beall, a member of the New Hope Baptist Church, was a former school teacher and homemaker.

Survivors: daughters, Shirley McLain of Nacogdoches and Ronnie Greer of Milam, a son, Neil Beall of Milam; ten grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Arvid Beall; a son, Carl Arvid Beall Jr.; amd a grandaughter, Mary Elize Rayford.

Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Sunday at New Hope Baptist Church near Milam with Bro. Lou Dane and Bro. Dick McLain officiating. Interment followed at Vicker Cemetery near Milam.

He was a merchant, farmer and owned a sawmill. His interest in the growth of Sabine County was such that he personally hired a geologist to come from Pennsylvania to test for oil, gas and other minerals. He hired politicians to attend and speak at his annual July 4th picnics, which were held at his old home in Isla. These picnics were open to the public and were always well attended. His aim in thi was to improve the knowledge and friendship between the politicians and the people they represented. Charles lost heavily in the depression, and also in the Texas Land Bank, so much in fact, that on Feb. 9, 1930, he suffered a stroke, from which he died two days later. He was buried at the old Vickers Cemetery. His beloved Wife, Kate...was buried beside her husband. their children were also buried in the same cemetery except when stated otherwise. (White and Toole, p 38).

The only possession we (the family) have of Harrision Vickers, Jr. and his son, Charles Harris Vickers, is a piece of gold. This money was given to Charles by his father when he was seven years old, in exchange for a 'prize pig' of which Charles was overly fond, and more than a little reluctant to part with. He was so grieved over the exchange that he never spent the money, and when my mother, Hazel, was seven years of age, he gave her this little gold piece" writes Mrs. R.G. Harrision Vickers Jr., referred to as Harris Vickers on his headright papers, rec'd his land from the Sabine County Land Board in 1838, at Milam, Texas. He was a member of the Sexton Masonic Lodge at Sexton, and after it was moved to Milam. He was a farmer and the family home was near the Old Vickers Cemetery in the Isla Community. His descendants still live on the land. (White and Toole, p 38).

Jimmy was born July 19, 1943 in Center, Texas to Ross Evans Vickers and Paunee Lord Vickers.

He was a graduate of Hemphill High School and later earned his Masters Degree at Stephen F. Austin State University.

He also served his country as a member of the Army National Guard. He was a lifelong resident of Sabine County.

Jimmy was an educator for the Joaquin Independent School District for many years and was a member of many organizations including the Frank Sexton Masonic Lodge in Milam; the Sons of the Republic of Texas; and held a Doctorate of Domino Science. He was a longtime member of New Hope Baptist Church.

He is survived by his sons, Mike Vickers of Shelbyville, Texas, Vance Vickers and wife, Johanna, of Sexton, Texas, Rodolfo Martinez of Slidell, Louisiana, and Edgar Martinez of Martinsville, Texas; daughter, Debbie Terry and husband, Cooper, of Longview, Texas; brother, Vance Vickers and wife, Juanice, of The Woodlands, Texas; sisters, Betsy Cox and husband, George, of Milam, Texas and Susie Clark and husband, Jimmy, also of Milam; and eleven grandchildren, Collin, Connor, Carsen, Logan, Caleb, Laney, Cooper, Carter, Lawson, Tristan, and Tatom.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Vickers, and his daughter-in-law, Crystal Vickers.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Sunday, March 31, 2019 at Starr Funeral Home, 510 Starr Street, Hemphill, Texas.

Funeral services will begin at 10:00 a.m. Monday, April 1, 2019 at Starr Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Ronnie Wheeler officiating and Ross Vickers delivering the eulogy.

Burial will follow services in Vickers Cemetery located in Milam, Texas.

Serving as pallbearers are Ronald Barlow, Mike Vickers, Vance Vickers, Victor Sheppard, Collin Vickers, Connor Terry, Logan Vickers, and Caleb Terry.

She was born in Milam, Texas to Jo Ann Reeves Vickers and Vance Evans Vickers, Sr. on October 21, 1916. She is the last of nine children. She worked in the Groves, Texas Post Office for 28 years before retiring and returning to Milam in 1973 with her husband, John Warner.

Jane was preceded in death by her husband, her siblings, and her parents. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews who will miss her.

Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday,July 25, 2017 in Vance E. Vickers, Sr. Cemetery under the direction of Starr Funeral Home.

Jerry is survived by his companion, Deborah Crnkovic of Orange, Texas; sons, Jeffery Vickers and wife, Jennifer of Hemphill, Texas; Cory Vickers of Springefield, Missouri, and daughter, Ariel Higginbotham and husband, Jared of Garland, Texas and his grandchildren, Elijah Vickers, Sophia Higginbotham, Amirabella Higginbotham, and Hezekiah Higginbotham.

He is proceeded in death by his parents, Paul and Marceil Vickers and his step father, Loyd Hamilton.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 5, 2019 at Starr Funeral Home, 510 Starr Street, Hemphill, Texas.

Funeral services will begin at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 6, 2019 at Starr Funeral Home Chapel.

She graduated from Hemphill High School where she served as drum major and flutist for the Hornet Band. She continued her love of music by singing and playing her flute in church. After high school, she attended Kilgore College and was a member of the Kilgore band. She loved watching Hemphill Hornet Football on Friday nights, and if she wasn't in the stands watching, you better believe she was listening on the radio. She was a talented artist who enjoyed drawing and painting and she also loved to sew and do cross stitch.

Susie is survived by her husband of 45 years, Jimmy Clark of Milam; son, Matt Clark and wife, Katherine, of New Braunfels; daughter, Stacy Horne and husband, Jacob, of San Augustine; brother, Vance Vickers and wife, Juanice, of Montgomery; sister, Betsy Cox and husband, George, of Milam; and grandchildren, William Horne, Dakota Horne and Harper Horne.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ross and Paunee Vickers; her brother and sister-in-law, Jimmy and Martha Vickers; and niece, Crystal Vickers.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Thursday, October 6, 2022 at Starr Funeral Home, 510 Starr Street, Hemphill, Texas.

Funeral services will begin at 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 7, 2022 in The Refuge Church of Milam, 200 Texas 87 S, Milam, TX 75959 under the direction of Starr Funeral Home with Bro. George Ross officiating.

Leroy married Donna Rae Hirt on January 19, 1952 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Elkhorn, NE. He bought the family farm near Waterloo, NE in 1958 and moved to Craig, NE in 1970, where he farmed for 38 years. He sold that farm in 1997 and moved to Oakland. He spent 15 winters in Apache Junction, Arizona. He was a member and president of the Missouri River Volunteer C.B. Club, past member of the American Legion in Craig, section leader of Rain Dance Mobile Home Park in Arizona. He is survived by his wife, Donna Rae of Fremont; son, Mark and wife, Sara Villwok of Coolidge, Arizona; daughters, Marcee and husband, Richard Tomasek of Craig and Rhonda and husband, Gale Miller of Soldier, Iowa; grandchildren, Aaron, Arick, John, Todd, Andrea, Nick, Grace, Jacob, Ryan, and Jared; great grandchildren, Tristen, Katlynn, Amber, Marissa, Katelyn, Kyle, Gavin, and Harper.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral service will be 10:30 A.M., Monday, September 28, 2015 at First Lutheran Church in Fremont. The Rev. Marty Tollefson will officiate. Visitation will be Sunday from 1 PM to 4 PM at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Military honors will be conducted by the Fremont Honor Guard of V.F.W. Post #854 and American Legion Post #20. Burial will be at the Prospect Hill Cemetery in Elkhorn, NE at a later date.

"Sis," founder of The Boarding House Catering and former co-owner of H White Construction County, was well-known for coordinating fundraisers for local parochial schools and other charity work throughout the community.

She was a founding member of Our Lady Queen of Heaven Church and was later a member of Christ the King Catholic Church in Lake Charles. She w as also a member of Catholic Daughters of America, the Ladies Altar Society, National Association of Women in Construction, Louisiana Restaurant Association, National Federation of Independent Businesses, and Women Business Owners Association, and was inducted into the Companions of Honor by the Diocese of Lake Charles.

Mrs. White was a 1942 graduate of St. Charles Academy and graduated from Vincent's Business College before marrying John Homer White, with whom she had eight children and one foster daughter.

Survivors include her brother, Martin Van Vincent; her children, James M. "Jimmy" White, Patricia Jo "Trish" White, Rose Katherine "Rosie" Tower and husband Wendell "Dub" Tower, Veronica "Pookie" White, Molly Jackson and husband Joe Jackson, Nanette White, and Cora Lynn Caldwell; son-in- law Nicola "Nick" Vartuli; daughter-in-law Vivia Cormier White; 17 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews and numerous friends whom she loved unconditionally.

"Sis" was preceded in death by her parents, Rose Felicia Vincent and Amos Joseph Vincent; a brother, Monsignor Amos J. "A.J." Vincent; her beloved husband, J. Homer White; one daughter, Marie Lorene "Butch" Vartuli; one son, John H. "Johnny" White Jr.; a son in-law, Randy Caldwell; and two great-grandchildren, Alex and Emma.

'Sis" White was well known for her kindness and generosity toward those in need of food, shelter and love over the years. She will long be remembered for her good deeds and hospitality.

A funeral Mass will be at Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic Church at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 3. The Rev. Wayne LeBleu, Monsignor James Gaddy, Monsignor Harry Greig, Monsignor Jace Eskind, Monsignor Charles Dubo is and the Rev. Aubrey Guilbeau will co-celebrate. Burial will follow in Consolata Cemetery. Visitation will be in Johnson Funeral Home in Lake Charles on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. A rosary will be recited at 5 p.m. followed by a Scripture service. Visitation will continue on Monday from 8- 10:45 a.m. in the funeral home.

An article about her 101rst birthday celebration, in The Sabine County Reporter, 23 November 2022, page 2, notes she was born and raised on a farm near Many, Louisiana. After marrying her husband George Yudell Bragg in 1939, she moved to Sabine County, Texas, where she has lived all of her adult life. Even at 101, she was said to be still active in going to church and canning jellies of all kinds. Her other favorite pass time is quilting.

The paper tried to get a count of how large her family was, but after a couple of attempts she just said "there's a bunch of us and it keeps growing."

Theo Bragg Byerly, 70, of Milam died Tuesday, Nov. 19, 1996, at St. Luke's Hospital in Houstopn.

Mrs. Byerly was born March 11, 1926, in Sabine Parish, Louisiana, as a daughter of the late Albert and Lula Mae (Burr) Vines and had lived in Sabine County 50 years. She was a member of Centerview Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors: Husband, Berlin "Bill" Byerly of Milam; daughters, Elizabeth LILLEY of Livingston, and Debbie WOMACK of Milam; three sons, Charles Ray Bragg of Brazoria and Dennis and Roger Bragg, both of Lake Jackson; a step-son, Robert Byerly of Pineland; sisters, Melva ROBERTS of Mansfield, Louisiana, Azalea CARTINEZ of Zwolle, Louisiana, Lilly WILLIAMS of Roganville, and Evelyn BRAGG of Milam; brothers, Bill Vines and Coyce Vines, both of Shreveport, Louisiana, A. J. Vines of Livingston, and E. C. Vines of Lufkin, 11 granchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

Marie (Virka) Racek Obituary

Marie (Virka) Racek was born on a farm near Morse Bluff on September 7, 1875 and died at her home in North Bend June 14, 1961. She had spent her entire life in this vicinity.

On September 22, 1896 she was married to Frank Racek in Fremont. Six children were born to this union. She was a 62 year member of the ZCBJ Lodge in Morse Bluff. She was a kind and loving mother and leaves a host of friends and will be missed by all.

Survivors are son, Lewis of North Bend; four daughters, Mrs. Tillie Chesley, Mrs. Emma Jensen, Mrs. Clara Best of North Bend; and Mrs. Julia Divis of Schuyler; brother Joe Virka of Morse Bluff; 13 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1931, and a son Frank in 1949.

Funeral services were at the Moser Funeral Home Chapel Friday afternoon with the Rev. Robert E. Favre officiating. Music was by Mr. and Mrs. James Arneal.

Pallbearers were Marvin Chesley, Merle Jensen, Melvin Divis, Gayle Chesley, Eugene Zeleny and Arnold Divis.

Interment was in Killian Cemetery near Morse Bluff.

Vern was a lifelong farmer in the Morse Bluff area. He married Sharon Tank February 7, 1961 at Faith Lutheran Church in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

He was a 30 plus year charter member of the Morse Bluff Volunteer Fire Department and was a former Fire Chief.

Vern is survived by his sons, Randy E. Virka and Michael J. (Christine) Virka all of Morse Bluff; sister, Darlene (Jim) Becker; 3 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild; brother-in-law, Gary (Judy) Tank; stepbrothers, Mert (Colleen) Heinemann, Eldon (Ellen) Heinemann and Myron (Doreen) Heinemann; step-sister, Pam (Dick) Nolte and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Sharon; and stepfather, John Heinemann.

Memorial Service will be 10:30 A.M., Wednesday, December 7, 2022 at Moser Memorial Chapel in North Bend. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 5-7 also at Moser's in North Bend. Interment will be at Woodland Cemetery in North Bend.

A Funeral Service for Alrene will be held on Friday, January 14, 2022 at 2:30 p.m. at the Milligan Auditorium. Pastor Murry Johnston will preside over the Funeral Service.

A Graveide Service will be held at the Bohemian National Cemetery following the Funeral Service.

Public visitation will be held on Thursday, January 13, 2022 from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with family present from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Farmer & Son Funeral Home - Kotas Chapel in Milligan.

Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church, Milligan Auditorium Window Project, or the Milligan Legion Auxiliary.

Arlene Venice Kassik was born to Joseph R. Vnoucek and Ella (Eret) Vnoucek on July 24,1925 at Friend, NE, and passed away January 10, 2022, at Heritage Crossings in Geneva, NE at the age of 96 years, 5 months and 17 days. She was one of 6 children in the family.

Arlene grew up on a farm northeast of Milligan. She attended Country School District #100 and stayed at her Grandmother Eret's home in Crete to attend High School where she graduated with the Class of 1942. After graduation, she worked at the Bruning and Fairmont Airbases during World War II from 1942 to 1946. After her children were in school, she worked at Milligan Public School as a cook, at the Formfit Plant at Crete, and then worked at the Youth Development Center in Geneva, NE from 1981 to 1991.

On May 21,1946, Arlene was married to Leonard Kassik of Milligan, NE on her family's farm and to them 3 children were born: Michael Leonard, Dean Albert, and Patricia Marie. Her family farm was a place where she held an abundance of memories like the one Christmas Leonard rode on horseback due to large amounts of snow to deliver her Christmas gift which was a brown fur coat. She first met Leonard when Arlene's brother Loren, along with Leonard, came to get her and Dot for the weekend at Crete while they were staying at her Grandmother Eret's.

Arlene was a member of the Milligan United Methodist Church and UMW spanning over 50 plus years. Since 1945 she was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post #240 where she held offices at the local and county level. Arlene was also a member of the WFLA and Senior Citizens Club in Milligan. Her talents of Czech cooking, sewing, crocheting, knitting and embroidery were weaved throughout her whole life. Family and friends, time and time again, enjoyed her kolaches and dumplings. Her children donned her talents of homemade costumes and clothes. Her handwork of blankets and towels is a gift that will never be forgotten. As a witness of all of these things, Arlene's passion in life was her husband, her family, dancing and music, which lead her to support Leonard with The Milligan Czech Brass Band.

Arlene was preceded in death by her parents Joseph and Ella Vnoucek; husband Leonard Kassik; grandson Dean M. Kassik; brothers and sisters in law Loren Vnoucek and Arnold Vnoucek and Evelyn, Anna Vnoucek, Ray Soukup, Leslie Skrivanek, Marian and Emil Beranek, Albert and Neva Kassik, Fred and Mary Kassik, and niece Nancy Soukup; nephews Loren Skrivanek, Leonard (Magee) and Dennis Beranek, and Sam and Tom Kassik.

She is survived by sons Michael and wife Debbie Kassik, and Dean and wife Laura Kassik of Milligan; daughter Patricia and husband Timothy Remmers of Bruning; sisters Dorothy Skrivanek of Geneva and Betty Soukup of Lincoln; brother Joe A. Vnoucek of Farimont; 8 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

Betty B. Soukup, 92, of Lincoln, passed away Tuesday, January 18, 2022. She was born on April 17, 1929, in Friend, Nebraska to Joseph and Ella (Eret) Vnoucek. Member of Southgate Methodist Church, Milligan American Legion Auxiliary #240, WFLA Lodge #426, Lincoln Czech Club, past member of the Capital City Czech Choraliers. Betty enjoyed Czech cooking, sewing, embroidering, playing cards, and gardening. They were a major part in her life.

Betty was born on a farm 8 miles south of Friend, she attended District 100 country school, and graduated from Milligan High School in 1946. She earned a teaching certificate from Doane and taught country school for 4 years. On November 9, 1950, she married Raymond Earl Soukup of Ohiowa. Together they had 2 beautiful daughters, Nancy and Barbara. After the girls were grown, Betty cleaned houses and later worked at the East Union cafeteria for 14 years retiring in 1991. After retirement she enjoyed bowling, traveling, singing and entertaining her many friends. For the past 3 years she called Yankee Hill Village home. She loved to spend time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She will be dearly missed by all.

Betty is survived by her daughter, Barbara Jorgens; grandchildren, Angie (Paul) Jedlicka of Wahoo, Kelsey (Bradley) Drewes of Mildenhall, UK, Justin (Natalie) Jorgens of Lincoln; great-grandchildren, Vayda Jorgens, Grant and Carly Jedlicka, Ailill and Friedrich Drewes; sister, Dorothy Skrivanek; brother, Joseph Vnoucek, many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Soukup; daughter, Nancy Lea; brothers and sisters-in-law, Loren Vnoucek, Arnold Vnoucek and Evelyn, Anna Vnoucek; sister and brothers-in-law Arlene Kassik and Leonard, Leslie Skrivanek; nephew, Loren Skrivanek; great-nephew Dean Kassik.

Memorials may be given to the family for future designation.

Dorothy Ella Skrivanek was born to Joseph R. and Ella (Eret) Vnoucek on September 21, 1922 at Friend, Nebraska and passed away on May 31, 2022 at Heritage Crossings Nursing Home in Geneva, Nebraska at the age of 99 years, 8 months and 10 days. She was the second of six children in the family.

Dorothy was born on the family farm 8 miles south of Friend, Nebraska. She attended country school District 100 and then, along with her sister Arlene, lived with their Grandmother Eret in Crete, Nebraska to attend high school where she graduated with the class of 1940. After graduation, Dorothy attended business college in Kansas City until World War II broke out. She then began working at both the Fairmont and Bruning Airbases in support of the war effort.

On October 23, 1945, Dorothy was married to Leslie Skrivanek at her family home near Friend, Nebraska. They made their home on the Skrivanek farm near Milligan, Nebraska. Together, they had three children: Loren Gene, Alan Leslie, and Debra Ann. Dorothy enjoyed working alongside Les on the farm and raising their children. She was an expert seamstress and enjoyed cooking many Czech delights. After the children were grown, she worked at the Youth Development Center in Geneva, Nebraska. In retirement, Dorothy enjoyed making memories with her family, traveling, working outdoors and baking her delicious kolaches. Her fun-loving nature and kindness will be remembered by many.

Dorothy was very active in her community. She was a Gold Star Sister member of the American Legion Auxiliary HSSK Post #240, charter member of the Crete DAV Auxiliary and member of Saline Center WFLA Lodge #389. She was also a member of the Milligan United Methodist Church and was a sponsor for the Methodist Youth Choir and Youth Fellowship.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph & Ella Vnoucek; husband, Leslie Skrivanek; son, Loren Skrivanek; brothers and sisters-in-law, Loren Vnoucek, Arnold Vnoucek and wife Evelyn, Anna Vnoucek; sisters and brothers-in-law, Arlene Kassik and husband Leonard, Betty Soukup and husband Raymond; niece, Nancy Soukup; and great nephew, Dean Kassik.

She is survived by her son, Alan Skrivanek of Milligan, Nebraska; daughter, Debra Skrivanek Hall of Lincoln, Nebraska; brother, Joe Vnoucek of Fairmont, Nebraska; grandchildren, Jarod (Alex) Skrivanek of Denver, Colorado, Jeff (Carmen) Skrivanek of Elkhorn, Nebraska, Tyler Skrivanek, of Denver, Colorado, Shannon Skrivanek of Clarkston, Washington, Jessica Hall of Jamestown, North Dakota; great grandchildren Haley Skrivanek, Destiny Skrivanek, Cody Sessions, Brenden Sessions, and Hunter Owens; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Darlene M. Vodicka Daws was born to Joseph and Agnes (Zelenka) Vodicka on January 2, 1942 in Carroll, Iowa and passed away on September 21, 2011 at Fillmore County Hospital in Geneva, NE at the age of 69 years 8 months and 19 days. She was the oldest of 6 children.

Darlene lived in Iowa the first 4 years of her life. The family moved to Nebraska first living in Exeter then Fairmont where she entered the 5th grade. In 1960 she graduated from Fairmont Public School. Her first job was working at the Tower Caf? during high school. She then became a Certified Nurse's Aide at the Fairmont Nursing Home and worked at the Heritage of Geneva for 1 ? years. On March 5, 1973 the Fairview Manor in Fairmont opened with Darlene taking on the role of Certified Nurse Aide, Med Aide and worked her way up to Supervisor in the Laundry Dept. for the next 20 years. Darlene became very close to the residents of the Manor over the years considering them and her coworkers a second family.

Darlene met Rex Johnson and through the years was blessed with 5 beautiful daughters. Rex passed away on January 1, 1970. On December 17, 1976 she married Willard (Bill) Daws at St. Helena's Catholic Church in Grafton, NE.

Cooking, reading, walking, watching her favorite shows, playing cards, especially Skip-Bo with her husband and family, collecting recipe books, and spending time with her family were all things she enjoyed.

She is survived by daughters and son-in-laws, Desiree (Chris) Bennett of Weatherford, TX, Renee (Chris) Sluka of Roseland, NE, LaRae (Don) Garrigan of Pacifica, CA, Charlene (Joseph) Magrini of Crystal Lake, IL, and Michelle (Brian) Drahota of Lincoln, NE. Granddaughters, Shilah Garrigan of Midland, TX and Whitney Drahota of Lincoln, NE, grandsons Seth Garrigan of Pacifica, CA, Ryan Sluka of Roseland, NE and Dominic Magrini of Crystal Lake, IL. One sister, Doris Mason of Grand Island, NE, brothers and sister-in-laws, Darrell (Darlene) Vodicka of Geneva, NE, Larry (Ruth) Vodicka and Gary (Kathy) Vodicka of Fairmont, NE and numerous nieces and nephews.
Darlene was preceded in death by her parents, first husband Rex Johnson Jr., sister Donna Scheil, brother-in-law Don Mason, sister-in-law Linda Vodicka, and by a beloved grandson Scott Christian Garrigan.
