She was preceded in death by her husband, Tommy Lawrence Impson; and her parents, William and Winnel Spears. Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friday, July 24, 2020 at Starr Funeral Home, 510 Starr Street, Hemphill, Texas. She was a member of First United Pentecostal Church where she served as church secretary. Among her favorite things to do were crocheting and tending to her flowers and plants. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and for that matter, everyone else's grandchildren. She liked to sew and she would make her own patterns. Her children fondly remember her making all their clothes when they were growing up. Thelma is survived by her husband of 61 years, LeRoy Ebarb of Hemphill; sons, David Ebarb and wife, Janet, of Pineland, Randy Ebarb of Jennings, LA, and Timothy Ebarb and wife, Holly, of Hemphill; daughters, Betty Bealer and husband, Henry, of Jennings, Rebecca O'Blanc and husband, Timmie, of Egan, LA, and Tammie Lopez and husband, Richard, of Fairmount; daughter-in-law, Rachel Ebarb; brothers, LeRoy "Blue" Spears and wife, Kathy, of Hemphill, James Spears and wife, Connie, of Cushing, Henry Spears of Cushing, and Roger Spears and wife, Carolyn, of Milam; sisters, Carlie Durrant of Cushing and Lois Spears of Many, LA; 22 grandchildren and 39 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, Daniel Ebarb and great granddaughter, Hayley Eliana Campbell. He is also survived by five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Kenneth was preceded in death by his son Jonny Speight. The youngest of nine children, she was born in Hemphill, Texas to Tom and Arley Speights on November 17, 1929. She was preceded in death by her parents, all siblings except one dear sister, and her beloved husband, Ted McBeth. Gloria had a joyful spirit and was rarely without a smile on her face. Her father passed away when she was three-years-old, and Gloria was raised by her mother during the Great Depression. She was voted "Most Popular" and played on the Hemphill High basketball team. She was proud of her Hemphill heritage and returned often for family and school reunions. As a young career woman, Gloria worked at a bank in downtown Houston in the '50s. It was here where her future husband was encouraged by an aunt to meet a pretty girl she knew at church when he visited from his studies at A&M. She was right. Gloria and Ted were soul mates who held hands every day of their long marriage. Bless you, Aunt Mildred. Gloria's banking career was put on hold to work at home as a wife and mother to two daughters. She enjoyed entertaining, gardening, cooking, traveling, reading and was an excellent Bridge player. Gloria's greatest joy in life was her family which extended from her husband and two daughters to three grand-daughters and a great grand-son. "Gigi" as she was affectionately known, taught her granddaughters the lost art of cooking and sewing as well as to seek adventures in life. She gave them unconditional love and the most amazing Christmas stockings a child ever knew for which she shopped all year long. Her home was filled with love and endless support, helping them become women of strength and substance. Always stylish, Gloria's inner beauty and loving personality far outweighed the exterior. But outings to Neiman's and Sakowitz with her growing up -with lessons on how to work the sale rack '96 will never be forgotten. Gloria was also a woman of strong faith, counting bible studies and volunteering at church among life's rewards. She led by example in her endeavors. Perseverance to overcome obstacles included swim lessons as an adult since she wasn't taught as a child. Though she learned to swim, she never took to water. Her aversion to water extended to dietary choices. Seafood was off limits and she often told people she was "allergic" to avoid further questions. This was the one area in which she was known to take license with the truth. She had no known food allergies. As the wife of a Chemical Engineer, Gloria learned to move from city to city. From Lake Jackson to Odessa to Lake Charles and finally back to Houston, Gloria made each transition as easy as possible for her family. Not one to complain, we never knew West Texas wasn't to her liking until years later. Gloria returned to her banking career upon arrival in Houston in the early '80s when she inquired about a job at her new bank and was hired on the spot. Her financial prowess continued as she enjoyed investing in the stock market with her husband and recently instructed at age 85 that her "bond man" be called from her hospital bed. Her mind was as sharp as her spirited wit. Gloria is survived by daughters, Patricia Chandler (Robert), Mary McBeth (Jim Crump); granddaughters, Michele Reed, Jillian Pennington, Charlotte Pennington; great-grandson, Cameron Reed, and countless friends whose support is much appreciated. You will be missed, Gigi. |

Vanderbilt of an oil painting of Judge Joshua H. Speights. James, a great-grandson of Judge Speights,painted the portrait from a black and white copy of a picture taken of the Judge found in the archives of the Texas Legislature in Austin. Joshua, a citizen of the Republic of Texas, served Sabine County in District #22, State Legislature 1853-1854, and 1859-1860, and also served as Judge of Sabine County 1877-1882. he was also a merchant, lawyer, physician, and farmer though not at the same time. James and Marguerite Vanderbilt have been patrons of the museum and library from the beginning. They have given gifts of family heirlooms, valuable books and many mementos honoring Joshua H. Speights, his mother Rebbecca Hopkins Speights, and their descendants and relatives. James Vanderbilt spent a year studying and working for the British National Gallery in London, England. He retired form the Navy after World War II as a Lt. Commander. His hobbies are many but oil painting is his first love. The Sabine County museum is very proud to have the portriat and is open Wednesday and Fridays and by appointment to visitors. SABINE COUNTY REPORTER 27 March 2002, Page 9 SRT honors Vanderbilt with memorial On Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001, the Sabine District Chapter #33 of Sons of the Republic of Texas (SRT), dedicated an SRT memorial medallion at the grave of James C. Vanderbilt, deceased member of the chapter. The unveiling ceremony of the historic marker was held at the Ft. Jesup National Park and Cemetery near Many, LA, in Sabine Parish. Sabine County Sheriff's Department proved the firing of the military salutes fo the occasion and the Sabine Parish Sheriff's Department provided an escort to the cemetery. Vanderbilt was born April 15, 1915 in Ft. Jesup, LA. He was named at birth "Voyght Willard Boswell" and later changed his name to match his professional name as an artist. James C. Vanderbilt was the great-grandson of Joshua Hopkins Speights, who came to Sabine County in approximately 1841. He was a professional artist and a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy. Vanderbilt was a strong patron of the arts and was dedicated to preserving our history and culture. He was a key person in the founding of the Virgie Speights Memorial Library and Museum in Hemphill. He and his wife donated many gifts to enhance and maintain the Library and Old Jail Buildin Vanderbilt was a tireless worker and patron of the Sonoma Depot Museum in Sonoma, CA, where he lived for many years. His paintings and art illustrations for the movie industry, plus his gifts to preserve history will be enjoyed by future generations. This is believed to be the first medallion dedicated outside of Texas.....Recognition of descendants and acceptance of the marker was conducted by Bill Speights. Speights and J.E. She is preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Robert Earl Gellatly; father, Mermond L. Speights; mother, Ruth Elvie Mclemore Speights; and two sisters, Ruth Dorine Speights Robinson and Johnnie Mae Speights Hughes. Laverne lived and worked in Beaumont and Bevil Oaks for over 55 years and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bevil Oaks. She worked and retired from Jefferson County Health and Welfare in 1989 after 23 years. Laverne always loved gardening and spending as much time with family and friends as she could. Her loving smile and open heart never met a stranger and she was always willing to help in any way she could. A graveside service will be held Tuesday, June 24, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. in the Hemphill Cemetery in Hemphill, Texas. They shared their love and home with Janice Carlson, Jerry Burgoyne, Ryan Becker, Ben Jensen and his brother, Josh. Bea enjoyed politics, bridge, crossword puzzles and talking with people. She adored her granddaughters, Corbette and Moira, and loved and admired her sister, Margaret, and her younger brother, Bill. Saginaw Evening News, Saturday, February 16, 1895 Pioneer of Tuscola Found Dead at Gilford Brother Died in the Same Way Four Years Ago, and Strange to Say the Same Barn Joseph Spencer, age 76 years, one of the oldest pioneers of Tuscola County, a Veteran of the Mexican and late Civil War, was found dead in his barn, rear of resident, near Gilford last night at 8:00 by a neighbor named Gilbert Quipp. A coroner's inquest was held and a verdict of death from heart disease was rendered. A wife and four children survive him. His brother Manuel was found dead in the same barn four years from the same disease. Another brother, Moses, was shot at Bay City in the 60's by a rough character, dying afterwards from the effects of his wounds. (Both obituaries courtesy of Valerie C. I believe all the children (she and her siblings) grew up in Hopewell, VA. Thelma and Otis settled in Madison Heights, VA (outside of Lynchburg) and had two children, Shirley and Gary. Shirley first married a man named Woody (last name) who came from a prominent family in Madison Heights. They had two children, Lynn and Gwen. Shirley divorced and married Buddy (Marshall) Coleman who worked for the Lynchburg Sheriffs Department. They had one daughter, Tina Coleman. Uncle Otis died in March of 2000 from a heart attack. He was buried in Madison Heights, VA. with full military honors. Gary Taylor married his high school sweetheart, Bonnie. They had two children, Chad and Kelsi. They still live in Madison Heights today. Gary became a master plumber like his father and Chad was following this also. Kelsi became a physical therapist. Thelma died around the 2005 possibly cancer. Shirley passed around 2007 from throat cancer due to years of smoking. I am not sure how many grandchildren that Shirley has: Lynn had at least two girls, Gwen had at least two and Tina has at least one." |

On July 15, 1967, Alvin married Mary Ann Pacula in St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Colon, Nebraska. Alvin was a retired farmer, mechanic, heavy equipment operator and fabricator. He was a member of St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church in Howells and the Knights of Columbus. Alvin is survived by his wife, Mary Ann of Howells, NE; son: Andrew J. Spicka of Omaha; daughters: Kristin and husband Vernon Dirks of Sioux City, IA, and Stephanie and husband Brent Konvalin of Orangevale, CA; grandchildren: Chelsea, Seth, Hannah, Carson and Hunter; sister Wilma Racek of Lincoln; brother Edwin and wife Dorothy of Geneseo, NY; and many nieces and nephews also survive him. Alvin was preceded in death by an infant son, Francis, parents, grandparents, brother-in-law Robert Racek and nephew James Racek.
