"Milam Cemetery receives marker"

The Texas Historic Cemetery Dedication Ceremony for Milam Cemetery took place on Saturday, October 11, following the annual Nethery reunion...local historian Weldon McDaniel....gave a presentation outlining some of the significant historical events that took place in Milam and the importance of preserving the history of Milam Cemetery. He said as many as 85 percent of all early settlers coming into Texas put their boots in red dirt. Although San Augustine and Nacogdoches counties have a friendly battle over which is older, Milam is just as old as either of them....

Dorothy Nethery Spain had the honor of reading the script engraved on the marker:

"Milam, the first County Seat of Sabine County, has a history of travelers and visitors stretching back centuries. Native Americans and Spanish exploreres, soldiers and missionaries passed through and often camped on Las Boregas Creek. Texian settlers encountering the natural abundance echoed the words of Stephen F. Austin, who recorded in his diary entry of July 16, 1821: "We then suddenly came to an open rolling country thinly timbered soil about the color of Spanish browne, and in some places redder. This Red Land is very productive and is covered with the most luxuriant growth of grass I ever beheld in any country." The settlment first called Red Mound (Red Mount) was the seat of Government for the Sabine District since 1822, and was surveyed as a town site in 1828.

Milam Cemetery is on a high hill overlooking the historic community. The exact dated of the first burial will never be known Spanish Explorers were passing through present-day Milam as early as 1539 and camped on Las Boregas Creek a few hundred yards west of the cemetery. Local hisorians believed Anglo burials occurred here probably as early as 1775, since travelers used the campsite down the hill on the Las Boregas. The land on which the cemetery is located was granted to JOHN SMITH on Feb. 26, 1835. The first marked burial is dated 1864, although more than 100 unmarked graves are suspected. The numerous military Veterans dating back to the Creek War are interred here, as well as prominent early citizens from the CAUSEY, WEATHERRED. McGREW, and NETHERY families. Milam Cemetery may be the oldest organized cemetery in Sabine County, and cherished chronicle of generations of visitors and residents." 		 STR06

Judge J. L. Smith

Judge J. L. Smith, 86, of San Augustine, passed away Thursday, May 21, 2009, in San Augustine.

Judge Smith was born Nov. 19, 1922, in Hemphill as a son of the late Lucille (Hoell) and Russell Allen Smith. He had lived in San Augustine several years.

Judge Smith had a long life of service. he was a graduate of Baylor University's law school and practiced law in the East Texas area for several years. He served a number of years as District Judge for the 273rd District Court, serving San Augustine, Sabine and Shelby Counties, and had also served as district attorney and prosecutor, alogn with service on the board of regents for Lamar University and as president of the San Augustine School Board of Trustees. He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church and was a U. S. Navy veteran of World War II.

He and Joy Babcock were married in 1943. She preceded him in death on Aug. 22, 2007. Judge Smith was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Stephanie Dawn Stanley, in 2005.

Survivors; daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Dr. Richard Stanley of Abilene; grandson, Russell Stanley and wife Lauren of Rule, and Richie Stanley and wife Gabby of Abilene; and great-grandchildren, Alexis Stanley and Katie Stanley.

Funeral services were set for 11 a.m. Saturday, May 30, at Calvary Baptist Church on East Columbus Street in San Augustine with Bro. Russell Stanley officiating. Interment will follow at Liberty Hill Cemetery in San Augustine.

Visitation will be held Friday, May 29, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Wyman Roberts Funeral Home at 316 W. Columbia Street in San Augustine.

Services are under the direction of Wyman Roberts Funeral Home in San Augustine. Online condolences may be posted at their website.

John Thomas Smith

John Thomas Smith was born on July 31, 1913, in Sabine County, Texas. He went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, January 5, 2012, at the age of 98 years, five months and five days after a battle with cancer.

Smith was the son of John Thomas Smith, Sr. and Lockie Pearl Smith and his step-father was Eugene Burton Smith of Geneva.

He had a brother, Henry Mathis Smith, two sisters Madie Mabrey Anders and Hazel Maurine Drye. His siblings all pre-deceased him. He has a half-sister Rose, step-brother Hugh Smith and step-sister Iva Belle Ennis.

Smith and his wife Janel had a son who they named Thomas Cleveland Smith. He was born on September 6, 1946 and passed away at the age of 16 days on September 22, 1946. He had no other children, but many nieces and nephews, who will miss him very much.

He was in the Masons, a member of the Sexton Lodge in Milam, Texas. He held the honor of being a 32nd degree Mason. He was a member of the Pipeliners Union #798 in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Funeral services were held Sunday Jan. 8, 2012 in Wyman Roberts Memorial Chapel with Bro. Gary Buske officiating. Burial following in Myrtle Springs Cemetery. There was a Masonic graveside service. Pallbearers were Masons.

J. Eldon Smith

J. Eldon Smith, 77, of Newport, Delaware, died Wednesday, Oct. 18, 1995, at his daughter's residence in New Jersey.

Smith was a native of Sabine County and had lived in Newport sinc 1955. He was a retired pipefitter. He was a member of Bethany Baptist Church and the First State Square Dance Club. He was also a member of the Little Fowler Masonic Lodge in Hemphill and High Noon Lodge 338 as well as York Rite Masonic Consistory and a member of Omar Temple in Charleston, South Carolina.

Survivors: three daughters, M. Frances Miller of Pedricktown, New Jersey, Gloria Faye Fritz of Columbia, South Carolina, and Letha Nell Payseur of Gastonia, North Carolina; a brother, Emmitt Smith of Pineland; a sister, Lucille Hair of Jasper; four grandchildren; seven step grandchildren; a great-grandson; and six step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, M. Lavon Gooch Smith, in 1988.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday at Bethany Baptist Church in Newport. Interment was at Gracelawn Memorial Cemetery in Minquadale. Services were handled by Nichols & Gilmont Funeral Home in Newport.

June Smith sat on the porch of his home near Pineland and regaled more than 100 persons at his 80th birthday party with tales of early days in East Texas.

Born at Sabinetown, he was the son of Henry and Martha Ann Morris Smith, and grandson of Shadrach Morris, who gave 200 acres of land in the early 1830s to found Sabinetown. His great grandfather, Gideon Morris, had donated a like amount for the founding of Morristown, Tennessee in the 1700s.

His father Henry Smith who died before he was born, came from England to teach school at Milam and Sabinetown. As a boy, he grew up the hard way, but with lots of fun and frolicking. He recalls working hard, long hours on logging rafts, floating logs to Orange. He did the cooking before he was old enough to push logs.

Frank Davis, a mail contractor, hired him at the sum of $5.00 a month to carry the mail from Hemphill to Geneva, when he was just a boy.

At the age of 18, Mr. Smith helped to move his sister and family, the Ide Russells from Louisiana across the Sabine to Sabine County. There was a post office, a church, a school, a doctor, F.S. Love and 52 families. June Smith stayed there and farmed, first with his sister's family and then with his own until recently when he had to move nearer a doctor. His wife the former Miss Vessie Brittain, is an invalid since a fall a few years ago, which broke her hip. His was the last family to leave this now deserted community. He moved over to Pineland to live in a house owned by his son, Brittain Smith, who lives nearby. He does, however, still drive over regularly to care for his cattle, fix fences and dream of wonderful years when he was raising his family there.
Not long after he helped move the Russells in an ox-drawn wagon, he met and married Miss Vessie Brittain, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. S. Brittain. There was a church wedding in 1904 with Burnis and Mattie Lou Honeycutt Vickers as attendants.

The Brittains gave the couple 67 acres on which Ide Rusell helped his brother in law build a two room house with cypress shingles, stick and dirt chimney, big rooms and wide porches. There they worked hard, were self-sustaining and gradually prospered, buying more land, clearing and raising cotton for money crop, sheep for clothing, and hogs and cattle.

Mr. Smith refused to shear the sheep, but accommodating neighbors Abb Vickers and Perkins Harvey were willing to help out. He liked to raise hogs and trained his to come when he called. There was the whole country for the cattle, sheep, goats, horses and hogs to roam in, even being taken across the river into Louisiana when grass or cane shoots were better there.
Nothing was wasted. When land needed clearing, the whole community came in to help. Cooking went on for days, with food being cooked in huge iron pots. It was a frolic for the young people, who were expected to help in the work, though. The logs were used for houses, barns, rail fences, stove wood, etc.

At butchering time, the same community spirit prevailed and the same thrift and utilization of everything. Cold weather was necessary, and the meat saved by curing the smoke. Everyone had a smokehouse, quite large with a fire of hickory wood, kept smoldering for weeks in the center of the dirt floor. Meat was hung from the rafters to absorb that hickory flavor.

"They don't make that kind of meat these days," says Mr. Smith. They made what they called souse, now known as hogshead cheese. Excessive fat was trimmed off, after the sausage meat was set aside, and rendered into lard. Big iron pots outdoors over a fire were filled with these bits of fat, which were slowly stirred until nothing was left but cracklings. From these cracklings came the family soap. Lye, leeched from hardwood ashes, mixed with the cracklings, water added and cooked until bubbly thick. When cool, this soap was stored in crocks and used at laundry time. Clothes were boiled, after being soaked in soapy water, placed on a block and battled. This was to removed embedded soil from work cloths. The Smiths owned a "crackling squeezer", a luxury in those days, which squeezed the last bit of grease from the fat. Cracklings were also delicious cooked in cornbread. They also had a fine sausage mill.

Once Mr. Smith's four year old daughter, Eula, caught her finger in the sausage mill. Afraid to turn the mill for fear it would cut off her ginger, they carried her to Dr. Love, sausage hanging by a bit of skin. The doctor splinted it up and Eula, now Mrs. Judge Cordray, has her finger just a bit scarred.

Mr. Smith was active in church and community affairs. When the Rev CA Perkins an outstanding evangelist in the area, established the Methodist Sabine Circuit with both sides of the river as his charge, he credited Mr. Smith with being a factor in its establishment. He also owned the second car in Sabine County, a beautiful Model T Ford.

Besides Mrs. Cordray of Isla community, his children are Mrs. Zelma Blasingame of Garland, Texas, Reece Smith of the Sexton community, Brittain Smith of Pineland, and Aldous Smith, a Methodist Minister, of Dayton, Bulah, who married Roy Allen, died in 1930 and Clarence died in 1928. There are 19 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. 		 STR06

Katherine Miller, 65 Dies in Armada

Mrs. Katherine M. Miller, 65, died suddenly at her home in Armada Thursday, Aug. 30. She had been in failing health for the past year.

Mrs. Miller was born June 25, 1891, in Elmwood Township, Tuscola County, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles J. Smith. In 1930, she married G.W. Miller who died in 1986.

Ten years ago Mrs. Miller moved from Colwood where she had operated a general store.

Mrs. Miller was a member of the Congregational Church of Armada and the Order of the Eastern Star at Unionville.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. John (Madeline) ZEMKE and Mrs. Reginald (Jean) HOLM, both of Armada; one brother, Thomas Smith of Colwood, and one sister, Mrs. Carl Kirkpatrick of Caro.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Ben Collon Funeral Home, Caro, with Dr. E. Ray Wilson, formerly of Caro, now in Gagetown, officiating. Burial was in Caro Cemetery.

Mrs. Miller was well known in this area and had numerous relatives and friends in Gagetown, Colwood and around Cass City.

21234 I33924  Smith  Kenneth Love  6 Feb 1947  31 Aug 2021  0  An article in the March 20, 2019 issue of The Sabine County Reporter reported about a reunion of Kenneth Smith of Bronson, and an army buddy, Carlton Oberholser, who were in drafted in October 1966, when Kenneth was just 19, took basic training togehter in Alabama, both eventually serving in Vietnam.

A front page article in the same newspaper announced his death from Covid-19, titled "Community Suffers loss of Smith, West Sabine Board President." His obituary was also published in the same issue. on page 9:

Kenneth Love Smith Sr., 74, of Pineland, TX passed away Tuesday August 31, 2021. Kenneth was born in Wharton, TX on February 6, 1947 to Britton and Helen Smith.

Kenneth spent most of his life in Sabine County and he loved it here.

He was a 1965 graduate of West Sabine High School. Soon after graduation he was drafted into the United States Army where he became Sergeant of the 19th Combat Engineer Battalion Company D, where he served a tour in Vietnam in 1967-1968. His experience in the Army played a very important role in his life. He frequently pointed out that the Army taught him the values of discipline, strength and team work. He knew how to get the job done. These values contributed to the many successes in his life. He was a proud Veteran and loved his country.

Kenneth was very dedicated to serving his community. He was a lifetime member of the Sabine County VFW and a longtime member of the Pineland Service Club. He was a part of many Pineland Day Steering Committees, he served as The Pineland Early Learning Center Board of Directors and was on the Board of the Sabine County Activity & Nutrition Center. He has served on the West Sabine ISD School Board off-and-on since 1975, and was currently presiding as President of the board.

Kenneth was the recipient of the Pineland Service Club's Community Service Award in 2017 for his dedication to his community and was always someone that could be depended on to step up and help where ever needed. One of his many passions was the youth in our community. He attended games, track meets, stock shows, bingos, bought raffle tickets, donated items for raffles, went to buffets and loved bake sales and cake auctions.

Kenneth never met a stranger and had many friends all over. He was a fishing guide in his younger years and owned his own business and was a successful Oilfield Consultant. Kenneth loved playing 42 and was known to travel many miles for a 42 game. He had a way about him like no other.

He was a loving Husband, Father, Peepaw, Brother, Uncle, Cousin and Friend. His generosity and fun loving spirit will be missed by so many. He was so very proud of his children, but his bond with his grandchildren was like no other.

Kenneth is survived by his beloved and devoted wife of 53 years on September 14th, Ernesteen Smith of Pineland, TX; children, Ken Smith Jr. and wife, Glenda, of Pineland, Jereme Smith and wife, Cerri,of Hallettsville, Tracee Collins and husband, Jason, of Pineland, Aaron Smith of Pineland, and Sarah Smith of Pineland; sisters, Vessie Ferrell and husband, Thomas, of Spring, and Janice Smith Stewart of Pineland; brother-in-law, Allen Jagneaux; grandchildren, Keven Smith and wife, Vanessa, of Hallettsville, Katie Smith of Austin, Travis Smith of Austin, Kory Smith of Victoria, Cecelia Loos of Victoria, Sr. Airman, Simon Loos of Valdosta Air Force Base in Georgia, Kwin Smith of Hallettsville, Jaxon Collins of Pineland, and Cooper Collins of Pineland.

He is preceded in death by his loving parents, Britton and Helen Smith and sister, Helen "Blossom" Jagneaux

Graveside services will begin at 10:00 a.m. Monday, September 6, 2021 in Plainview Cemetery under the direction of Starr Funeral Home with Bro. Curtis White and Bro. Floyd Wright officiating. Serving as pallbearers are Keven Smith, Kory Smith, Travis Smith, Simon Loos, Jaxon Collins, Cooper Collins, Doug Welch, and Rodney Burch. Honorary pallbearers are Brothers of the 19th Combat Eng. BN. Company D 67-68, Benny Jacks, Carlton Oesterheld, Millard Smith, and Stephen Parnell.



Military Honors will be provided by the Sabine County Honor Guard.

Finally, The Sabine County Reporter, on September 29, 2021, included an additional story titled "Recognizing School Board President and community leader, Kenneth Smith" This detailed the proclamation which recognized almost 48 years of dedication and service by board president Smith to the West Sabine community. The document, after being read into the minutes of the meeting and signed, was presented to Ernesteen Smith, wife, and Tracee Collins, daughter of Smith. They also received the name plate which marked Smith's seat for many years.:

Funeral services for Kirby Smith, 94, of San Augustine, were held at 4:00 pm Monday, May 20, 2002 at Wyman Roberts Memorial Chapel, San Augustine, with interment in Thomas Cemetery, San Augustine. Officiating Ministers were Alton Shaw and Mike McLemore [Mike McLemore is a grandnephew of Kirby Smith].

Mr. Smith died Friday, May 17, 2002 at Colonial Pines Health Care in San Augustine. He was born February 12, 1908 to Henry C. Smith and Alice Hines in Willis, Texas. He was owner of Smith Plumbing, also did construction work. He was a member of the Church of Christ, San Augustine.

Survivors include sons, Larry Smith and wife, Doniece of San Augustine and Philip Smith and wife, Chris, of Tyler, Texas; Grandsons, Steve Smith and wife, Sherry of Glenwood Springs, Colorado. Glenn Smith of Houston, Texas, Ryan Smith and wife, Amy of Waco, Texas; granddaughters, Lisa Shilling and husband, Cecil, of Huntington, Texas; Sharon Barbee and husband, Bobby of Shelbyville, Krista Everett and husband, Jay of Houston; 9 great-grandchildren.

He was born on December 1, 1946, in Sabine County, the son of Leroy and Sybil Smith. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, April 7, 2018 at Laird Funeral Home with Deacon David Darby, celebrant. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm on Friday, April 6, 2018 at Laird Funeral Home. A Rosary will be held at 7:00pm, following visitation on Friday, April 7, 2018.

Larry Paul was raised in Hemphill, where he graduated high school. During his younger years, he developed a love of fast cars and spent many hours working on and even racing them. His brother, Roy Glynn and his friends would certainly attest to his fast driving and occasional "scare" while riding with him. Soon after graduation, Larry proudly served his country in the U.S. Army in the Vietnam war period. During this time, he was decorated with many honors, including multiple citations, bars, and badges, as well as 4 bronze stars.
Following his service to our country, he returned to East Texas and worked at Nibco and Lone Star. He was a hard-working man who humbly provided for his family. He also loved fishing, and later, developed an enjoyment of hunting.

In 1980, he was introduced to a sweet lady, Wanda Ferguson. The two quickly developed a strong bond and were married in 1981. The have spent the last 37 years making wonderful memories as they lived their life.

They have traveled to multiple locations, enjoying the time spent together, as well as with their children and grandchldren. "Pappaw", as the grands called him, was their biggest fan and he and "Memaw" supported them at all the sporting events they were a part of. Larry Paul also enjoyed mowing and working in the yard.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Larry was also an active member in the Knights of Columbus. His fun-loving demeanor and vibrant smile is something that will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Mr. Smith is survived by his loving wife, Wanda Smith of Nacogdoches; sons, Larry Jason Smith of Nacogdoches and Eddie Marshall and his wife, Brenda of Nacogdoches; daughters, Marty Aparicio and husband, Eddie of Cushing and Sheila Steinsiek and husband, Scott of Houston; grandchildren, Jami Smith of Nacogdoches, Alex Aparicio and Tony Aparicio of Cushing, Courtney Issacs and husband, Ethan of Troup and Racheal Marshall of Nacogdoches; great-grandchildren, Braydon Sneed, Kaitlyn Sneed, and Journey Durrett; brother, Roy Glynn Smith and wife, JoAnne of Hemphill; sister, Virginia Langford and husband, Walter of Nacogdoches; niece, Jessica Ann Meeks and husband, Reese of Hemphill; and nephew, Roy Michael Smith and wife, Audra of Temple.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Leroy and Sybil Smith.

Pallbearers will be his Knights of Columbus brothers.

Honorary pallbearers will be Cristian Castro, Travis Rambin, Jamie Lockett, David Anthony, Rex Henson and Jaime Sifuemte.

Lela Bell Eddins

Lela Bell Eddins, 92, passed away Monday, Feb. 2, 2009, at Twin Lakes Rehabilitation and Care Center in San Augustine.

Mrs. Eddins was born Nov. 2, 1916, in Gregg County as a daughter of the late Charlie and Lucy Clegg Smith and had been a longtime resident of the Sabine and San Augustine Counties area. She was a homemaker and a member fo the Order of the Eastern Star and the Baptist Church.

Survivors: sons, Edward McGown and wife Betty of Hemphill and Ellis McGown and wife Linda of San Augustine; daughters, Mary Golden of Lufkin and Katy Newton and husband Wayne of San Augustine; brother, Jim Clegg of Bronson; grandchildren, Shane, Todd, Jimmy, Janiece, Tammy, Chad, Amber, Crystal, Michelle, Georgette, Nikki, and Travis; and numerous great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Willis Eddins; sons, John McGown and George McGown; and a grandson, John Hanks.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Feb. 4, at the Wyman Roberts Memorial Chapel in San Augustine with Bro. Gordon Simmons officiating. Interment followed at Centerview Cemetery near Pineland.

Pallbearers: Eugene Clegg, Shane McGown, Todd McGown, Jimmy Woods, Weldon Thomas and Tommy Newton.

Lorraine Benkelman died with her family by her side June 15, 2012 in her home in Caseville from complications of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. She was 81.
Born in Kalamazoo February 12, 1931 to Clarence W. and Cora Page Smith she was raised in Kalamazoo and studied business at Michigan State University for two years before marrying Robert F. Benkelman September 30, 1950. They lived in East Lansing and Bay City before settling in the Thumb in 1962, when Mr. Benkelman founded the Tuscola Broadcasting Company. After several years as a homemaker, Mrs. Benkelman joined her husband in the administration of the radio station, WKYO in Caro, where she used her accounting training and business sense to help run the enterprise.
In retirement, she and her husband owned a home near Tampa, FL but they returned to Caseville year-round in 2004. Mrs. Benkelman loved entertaining and spending time with her friends in the Thumb, who knew her as "Smitty". She also enjoyed researching family histories and other topics on the Internet. She was naturally computer-savvy, often helping her friends with computer setups and fixing their Internet connections.
Her husband preceded her in death September 22, 2006 as did her sister, Carole Ann Penturf in 1992 and a grandson, Keith Brooks in 2006. She is survived by three daughters: Carole (Kevin Larke) Benkelman of St. Johns, Catherine (Charles) Brooks of Sheridan, AR and Susan (Kenneth Fireman) Benkelman of Bethesda, MD; grandchildren: Jason Tetreau, Carrie Tetreau, Andrew Larke, Steven (Amber) Brooks, Eric Brooks, Catherine Fireman, Alexandra Fireman; and a great granddaughter, Faith Brooks.
Graveside service will be held 1:00 p.m., Friday, June 22, 2012 at her graveside in Elkland Township Cemetery. Interment will be in ElklandTownshipCemetery, CassCity. L. C. "Clint" Smith, 71, of Hemphill died at 2:45 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 29, 1996, at his residence on Italy Road.

Born March 14, 1924, in Sabine County as a son of the late Gus and Ola (Wright) Smith, he was a lifelong area resident. Smith was a Baptist and a mechanice at Coast to Coast.

Suvivors: sisters, Gussie Bass of Hemphill, Evon Tappan of Diana, and Eva Jean Thain and Lauree Baker, both of Houston; brother, R. E. "Rob" Smith of Hemphill.

Survivors include daughter, Guy Wilson of Macon; brothers, John T. The Smith's children were Eliza Jane, m. William CROUCH, Cordelia m. Rufus PRICE; Addison; Conway; m. Libby Shays; Margaret Opehelia, m. A P Cartwright; Charles Figures, and John Smith, Jr.

Henson and Parmelee note that her mother died soon after her birth, and she was raised by her older siblings, in 1860 living in Jefferson with her brother and his wife. (Henson and Parmelee, THE CARTWRIGHTS OF SAN AUGUSTINE, p. 272). Meck died at a relatively young age, and after her father died in December 1886, she joined her two oldest children, Matthew Charles and Annie in Georgetown, Texas, where both were students at Southwestern University. Teenage son Meck accompanied her to attend high school in Georgetown. They later moved to Waco, in order for Matthew Charles to attend business college. Shortly after Matthew graduated, and the other two children completed their school term in June 1890, the entire family moved to Terrell. (ibid, p. 304). Her three married children eventually built houses next door to each other on Griffith Avenue, and Ophelia lived with her daughter Meck, and Meck's banker husband, Walter P. Allen, until her death in 1939. (ibid, p. 311). 		 STR06

Mary Elizabeth (Smith) Sims

Mary Elizabeth (Smith) Sims, 89, passed away Saturday, March 27, 2010. Funeral services were Wednesday, March 31 at Moore Funeral Home Chapel in Arlington, Burial was at Oak Grove Cemetery, Irving.

Mrs. Sims was born near Hemphill and lived there while growing up. She moved back to Hemphill in 1965 and lived there until 1978 when she moved to Grand Prarie to be near her boys. She attended school in Hemphill. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great grandmother, and friend. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Bryan Jay and Mitty Smith; husband, Forest Earl Sims; and son, John David White, Jr.

Survivors include her sons, Benny Ray White and wife Marilyn; Paul David White and wife Maria; Marion Elno White and wife Inez, and Forrest Earl Sims, Jr. and wife Lisa; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren as well as numerous other loving family and friends.

Graveside services for Mary will be 12:30, Monday, December 28, 2020, at Antioch Cemetery, in San Augustine County under the direction of Starr Funeral Home.

The family would like to thank the staffs of Hemphill Care Center and Sabine County Hospital for their care and hard work during this trying time.

Merle Dean Cookie McLemore, age 70, died Tuesday, July 11th, at her home in Weatherford, Texas, after battling interstitial lung disease. She was born March 11, 1947 in Butler, Alabama, daughter of the late Joseph Hunter Smith and Grace Singleton.

She was a Baptist, worked for several years as Manager of Macs Diesel Service, Shell Lake, Arkansas, and as an Electronics Technician for Sanyo Manufacturing Corp., Forest City, Arkansas. She spent the remainder of her career as a Nurse and Certified Med Aide in several Nursing & Rehabilitation Centers in the north Texas region.

She was married to the late Felix C. McLemore, Sr., on October 2, 1971 at Pine Bluff, Arkansas, until his death December 11, 2007.

Surviving children: daughter Karen L. Scott of Austin, Texas, and Sharon Bussell, Middleton, Tennessee; daughters-in-law: April McLemore, Las Vegas, Nevada and Audra Ortega McLemore, Mineral Wells, Texas; three sons Lynn McLemore, Las Vegas, Nevada; , John Wayne McLemore, Weatherford, Texas; Felix C. McLemore, Jr., Mineral Wells, Texas; along with numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, many beloved nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, July 16, at Frazer's Funeral Home in Warren, AR. Burial in Fitzhugh Cemetery by Frazer's Funeral Home. Visitation 6-8 p.m. Saturday, July 15, at Frazer's. 		 STR06
