She was preceded in death by her husband, Percy McLemore, and grandson, Kris McLemore, and a son-in-law, Fred Sanders. Funeral services were held Oct. 25 at the Wyman Roberts Memorial Chapel in San Augustine with George T. Jones officiating. Interment followed at Liberty Hill Memorial Gardens in San Augustine County. He was a half brother of Marcus Chapman who survives. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. Mr. Smith, a former resident here, was born in Odessa township. The Rev. William B. Patterson officiated at the services, and burial was in Lakeside cemetery." His death certificate showed that he had spent 5 yrs in the Eaton Co. Infirmary. LaVonne later emailed the following news item to me: "While at the Saranac Library doing research today, I found: SARANAC ADVERTISER, MI, 9-19-1912: "Local News - Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Smith were in Ionia Monday." It ain't much but it's evidence they lived a real life. Saranac's a very small town north of Lake Odessa, 5 mi west of city of Ionia, so I hope this is your Elmer..." This might be another Elmer Smith, however, as no marriage record has yet been found. Additionally, it is noted on his death certificate that he was single, not widowed. |

Born Dec. 21, 1914, in Fairdale as a son of the late W. E. and Minnie Mozel (McDaniel) Smith, he had formerly lived in Kirbyville before returning to Sabine County 20 years ago. Smith, a U. S. Army veteran of World War II, was a member of the VFW Post #1 0351 and the Church of God. He was retired from the maintenance department of Kirbyville Independent School District. Survivors: wife, Audie Ray Smith of Hemphill; two sosns, Ferrell Levi Smith Jr. of Huntsville and William Dewayne "Bill" Smith of Hemphill; two granddaughters, Wendy Duncombe of Galveston and Cindy Smith of Huntsville; a sister, Sybil Smith of Hemphill; and a brother, Will Smith of Hemphill. Her Great-Grandfather, Levi McDaniel came to Texas from South Carolina pre 1840. Sybil married Leroy Smith May 12, 1940 in Hemphill, Sabine County, TX. They were happily married for 42 years and two months. Sybil was a member of East Mayfield Missionary Baptist Church, and her husband Leroy served as a Deacon there for many years before his death. She enjoyed gardening, and was very talented at piecing quilt tops together and hand embroidering them. She loved sewing, reading, crafts, teaching vacation bible school and other church functions. She also loved to cook big Sunday dinners for her children and grandchildren; which usually included homemade chicken and dumplings and her hand battered crispy fried chicken and a table full of fresh garden vegetables from her garden. She was at her happiest when she was able to care for her family in some way. Sybil and her husband Leroy Smith opened Smith Auto Supply in Hemphill in1961. When her oldest son Roy returned from Vietnam in 1968 he joined the business and became the owner/operator after the death of his father Leroy in 1982. Sybil was preceded in death by her husband; Leroy Smith in 1982; her parents: William and Minnie McDaniel Smith. She was also preceded in death by her brothers and sisters: Noble Smith, Hillery Smith, Ferrell Smith, Will Smith, Lula Smith and Verna Smith Perkins. Sybil is survived by son Roy G. Smith and wife JoAnne of Hemphill,TX.; daughter Virginia Langford and husband Walter; son Larry P. Smith and wife Wanda all of Nacogdoches, TX.; her grandchildren; Jessica S. Meeks, Michael Smith, Jason Smith, Marty Aparicio, Eddie Marshall and Sheila Marshall; her great-grandchildren; Luke, Chloe, Daniel, Elizabeth, Alex, Tony, Jami, Courtney and Rachel; and two great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-laws, nieces and nephews. He was married to Ann (Beasley) Smith who predeceased him on March 31, 2012. He was a member of the Texas Longhorn Association, and was a member of the Liberty Hill Baptist Church. Altoona Mirror (Clipping stamped April 1, 1944) Altoona Boy was Abord U.S.S. Portent An Altoona youth, Seaman Frederick Thomas Smith, aged 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. John T. Smith of 1012 Third avenue, was serving aboard the U.S.S. Portent, large minesweeper, which was announced as lost in the Mediterranean by the navy department in the stock edition of the Altoona Mirror yesterday and also today's edition. The young sailor's family was notified on the evening of Feb. 4 that he was missing in action and the announcement was published in the Altoona Mirror on Feb. 5. Since the announcement that he was missing the family has no further word from the Navy Department. Seaman Smith held the rank of quartermaster third class and had been overseas since February, 1943. He entered the service Oct. 20, 1942, and earlier had been employed as an apprentice in the Juniata boiler shop, where his father is employed. The U. S.S. Portent was a 700-ton craft and normally carried a crew of 100 men. Her commander, Lt. Howard C. Plummer of Beaumont, Tex., was reported to be safe. No information was given as to the number of casualities on the ship. Altoona Mirror (Clipping stamped January 31, 1945) Q. M. 3/c Frederick T. Smith Quartermaster Third Class Frederick Thomas Smith, aged 20, has been declared dead, after having been continued in the status of "missing in action" since the sinking of the U. S. S. minesweeper Portent int he Mediterranean area on Jan. 22, 1944, according to a letter from the navy department received yestrday by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John T. Smith. The Portent was sunk by an underwater explosion while patrolling off the beachhead at Anzio, Italy. Many ships and small craft were in the vicinity at the time of the explosion and quickly came to the rescue of the survivors. The navy department letter reads: "Your son was reported seen aboard the ship shortly before the explosion occured. To date no information had been received which establishes the fact that he survived the explosion. In view of the lenght of time that has elapsed and the strong probability that your son lost his life followint the explosion, the secretary of the navy has directed that his death be presumed to have occurred on Jan. 23, 1945, which is the day following the expiration of twelve months in the missing status." The young sailor's family was notified on Feb. 4 that he was missing, the information being published in the Altoona Mirror on Feb. 5. Frederick was born on Aug. 18, 1923, at Trenton, N. J., a son of John and Rose (Kwapil) Smith and came to Altoona nineteen years ago with his parents. He was graduated from Altoona High school in the class of 1940, was keenly interested in and an expert at swimming, as well as active in the student craftsman organization at the High School. His father, employed in the Juniata boiler shop, resides at 1118 Eleventh street, and his mother at 1012 Third avenue. A brother, Harry T. While living in Evadale, Mr. Smith was a member of Central Baptist Church. After retiring and moving back to Fairdale, he became a member of Fairdale Baptist Church. Mr. Smith enjoyed his family and friends, hunting, fishing, gardening and more recently, enjoyed corresponding with friends through email and Facebook. He especially enjoyed hosting an annual Fourth of July celebration at his home for numerous family members and friends. Hugh Love Smith, Sr., age 98, of Corpus Christi and more recently, Boerne, Texas, died peacefully in the presence of his loving family on June 14, 2017. He was born at home in Geneva, Texas, in Sabine County, on January 18, 1919, to Prince Anna Dorsey Smith and Eugene Burton Smith. He was one of 10 children. His father was a farmer and later the Sheriff of Sabine County. Hugh attended public schools in Sabine County, where he lettered for three years at Hemphill High School as an outstanding guard in basketball. On March 12, 1938, at age 19, he eloped with his beautiful, 16-year-old high school sweetheart, Era Mae Robbins. He bought her wedding ring, a gold band embossed with orange blossoms, at the drug store in Hemphill. The couple moved in 1938 to Corpus Christi, where they raised 'two children and each other' during the 76 years of their marriage. Hugh's first job in Corpus Christi was driving a delivery truck for Samsco Supply Company, and less than a year later he landed a job with Southwestern Oil & Refining Co. (later to become Kerr-McGee). His career at Southwestern began as an unskilled laborer, and he progressed to pumper, operator, lab manager, and finally to the position of manager of marketing. During World War II, Hugh served his country by remaining at his oil refining job of producing fuel for military aircraft. He retired in 1983, after working for 44 years with the same company. He loved his job with Southwestern, and took great pride in his work and the relationships he built there. Hugh was baptized in a creek near San Augustine at age 11 at a summer revival. After moving to Corpus Christi, he joined First Baptist Church downtown, where he participated in the Young Men's Bible Class, served as president of the Rufus Bryant Sunday School class, and worked with children at Boy's City and South Texas Children's Home. One of his most meaningful experiences was serving as an enthusiastic volunteer with Gerald Smith's Boy Scout Troop 11, for whom he presented the troop's first Eagle Award. In later years at First Baptist on Ocean Drive, Hugh enjoyed attending Vernon Elmore's Pastor's Class, served on the Property and Maintenance committee, and spent 10 years doing 'porch ministry' with Johnny Thomason. Hugh was an avid member of the Corpus Christi Camera Club, and built houses under the name 'Hugh Smith Builder' for 15 years under the mentorship of his dear friend, Frank Peerman. One of the most fun '96 albeit frustrating -- periods of his life was his 'golf era', which began in the 1960's with a foursome which played together for over 30 years, including John Wright, Carlos Hayley, Larry Lay, and later Henry Gillespie. This evenly-matched group loved being together and insisted that it was never too hot, cold, or windy to hit the links three times a week. While Hugh threatened to 'quit that foolish game' at least 1000 times, he reluctantly hung up his golf bag in 2006 due to health problems. A member of the Corpus Christi Country Club for 40 years, he served for two years as head of the Grounds Committee, and on the Board of Directors for three years. Hugh is preceded in death by his parents, nine of his siblings and in August 2014, his loving and faithful wife, Era Mae Smith; He is survived by a son, Hugh Love 'Clipper' Smith, Jr. and wife Nona of Vicksburg, MS; daughter, Sylvia Ann Smith Griffin and husband Paul, of Boerne, TX; six grandchildren: Stephen Smith and wife Sherri of San Antonio, Jim 'Kelly' Smith and wife Kelly of Vicksburg, MS, Abney Smith Clardy and husband Trey of Mendenhall, MS, Robin Smith of Vicksburg, MS, Chris Griffin and wife Ashleigh of Austin, TX, and Cindy Griffin Carr and husband Brian of Boerne,TX twelve great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Hugh was delighted -- a mere ten days prior to his death -- to attend a family gathering to celebrate the birth of his great-great granddaughter with five generations together at one time. On that day, Hugh was able to affirm and bless his numerous family members and enjoy their loving company. While Hugh's long life reflects many accomplishments, his proudest achievement by far was that of being a father to Clipper and Sylvia. He was a real 'Daddy' who was at home with his family every night and weekend. He took his kids to church, knew their teachers and their friends, and showed them by example what a life of integrity looked like. Hugh was his most complete when he was with his best friend, soul mate and counselor -- his wife Era Mae. He loved to bring her coffee in the mornings, and in the afternoons with a little bowl of ice cream. If she was mad at him, she would get her own coffee '96 and that was the worst possible punishment she could give him! They used to love dancing, and they would have small tea dances with their friends in the living room, and the kids would peek at them, thinking they looked just like Fred and Ginger. They took wonderful, winsome photographs together and developed them in their own darkroom. They held hands. They could read each others' minds. They loved each other deeply. The final years of Hugh and Era Mae's lives were spent living in Boerne, Texas at the Morningside Ministry at Menger Springs retirement living facility. They attended First Baptist Church in Boerne as long as they were able, and when they could no longer attend, they were visited faithfully by Pastor Mike Harkrider. The family is so grateful for the caring attention of many, including Shawna Barron, Bryce Boddie, Ulysses Flores, and Amy Castro of Alamo Hospice, Yessika Rodriguez of Nurse Next Door, Sandra, Sylvia, Monty and numerous others of the Cibolo House at Menger Springs. A family Memorial Celebration will be held in Boerne, TX in late June with a graveside service held in Geneva, TX at a yet to be determined date. Kovno was a governorate of Russia, and is known as Kaunas, the second largest city in present day Lithuania. Prior to the Second World War, Kaunas, like many cities in eastern Europe, had a significant Jewish population. According to the Russian census of 1897, Jews numbered 25,500, 35.3% of the total of 73,500. The population was recorded as 25.8% Russian, 22.7% Polish, 6.6% Lithuanian. They established numerous schuls and synagogues, and were important for centuries to the culture and business of the city. The 1920 Texas census shows he and both his parents as born in Russia, and his year of immigration as 1902, and that he became a naturalized citizen of the U.S. in 1907. His occupation was listed as merchant, dry good store. The 1930 census showed Hyman born in Lativa, and Betty born in Poland, with both sons incorrectly shown as born in Texas. He was shown as a retail merchant of Dry Goods, and Betty was a sales lady at their store. The home they lived in was valued at $5,000. |

In the "Marriages" section of the family bible belonging to her sister Avis, "Ilo and Dale Shelterly" are listed as witnesses to the 1926 marriage of Avis to Ben F. Benkelman. Tom McLemore-who later married Ilo's niece Bonnie-said that Ilo told him she had been married briefly, but had never told her niece about this marriage. There was a Dale B. Shelterley listed on the 1930 census, in Sebewa, Ionia County, Michigan. He was listed as single, and age 22, some six years younger than Ilo. He would have been 18 in 1926, so this could be a possibility. Dale was a son of Ozro B and Lillie C. Shelterley. Ilo married Robert Shelden later in life. She never had children. Her second husband had grown children from a prior marriage. Her niece, Bonnie, recalls that Ilo worked as a cartographer for the Greyhound bus line. She later became a travel agent, and traveled overseas extensively. She lived in Chicago in the late 1950's and invited a co-worker, Hans Penner, and his roommate at the University of Chicago-Tom McLemore, to Thanksgiving dinner. This is where Tom and Bonnie met. Ilo lived in Indiana in the 1970's and taught school. It was through another teacher that she met her husband, Bob Shelden. She loved to work with her hands, and her apartment was full of crafts she had made. Her great-nieces, Melinda, Melissa, and Leigh adored her. Ilo and Bob moved to Tuscon when they retired. They resided at 3737 North Country Club Drive. Ilo died of breast cancer at the University of Arizona Hospital in Tuscon. Bob later remarried. |

Obituary, copied from his FindAGrave memorial page: Israel Smith, of Tyler, who passed away on Wednesday, September 7, was born in Baltimore, Maryland, March 24 1911. In 1915 he moved with his family to Tyler where he made his lifetime home. Mr. Smith was a graduate of John Tyler High School and received his BA and LLB degrees from the University of Texas. In 1937 he married the late Eve Abramsky of Kingston, Ontario, Canada; they were married for 69 years. He is survived by his children, Manny and Ileane Smith of Pittsburgh, PA and Jerome and Sharon Smith of Lexington, MA, his granddaughter Judy and Adam Kaufman, great grandchildren Jamie and Jake Kaufman of Sharon, MA. One grandson, David Smith, predeceased him. Mr. Smith was a prominent lawyer in the Tyler legal community for many years. He also was a Founder of Western Foundry and served as its president until its acquisition by Woodward Corporation in 1959. He served as Regional Vice President of the Texas Manufacturers' Association and Chairman of the Texas Chapter of the American Foundrymens Society. Mr. Smith was a Shriner and Past Master of St. John's Masonic Lodge. He was a lifelong, active member of the Tyler Jewish community, as a member and past president of Congregation Ahavath Achim, a past president of the Tyler B'nai Brith and Jewish Federation of Tyler. He was also a strong and passionate supporter of the State of Israel. He was an avid reader, loved opera, travel and gardening. He continued his education and love of learning throughout his life and was a frequent user of the Tyler Public Library and the UT Tyler cultural series. On March 24, 2011, Mr. Smith celebrated his 100th birthday with a special service and brunch at Congregation Ahavath Achim attended by many members of his family, friends and admirers. In recognition of his 100th birthday, the Senate of Texas passed Resolution No. 462 on March 9.2011; he also received many awards and letters of commendation from national, state and local officials. Mr. Smith had the benefit in recent years of loving care by Veronica Wade, Lula Johnson, Margie Jackson, Ruthie Shaw, Martha Becerra, Katrina Sanders, and Kathy Tull. He died after a long battle with cancer. James, known as Lyndel to his family, was born in 1941 in Yellowpine, Texas to Robert Everett Smith, a Texas Ranger and Ellie Marie Edgar Smith. He had six siblings. He graduated from Hemphill High School and joined the U.S. Army. In 1960 he married Sudie LaNell Wilson and later made their home in Houston where he became a Captain in the Houston Fire Department. In 1987, James retired from the fire department and went to work as a police officer for the Houston Independent School District. He retired from that in 1997 and moved to Kempner. James is survived by Sue, his wife of nearly fifty-two years, his son Shelby Smith, his daughter Renae Brumbaugh, daughter-in-law Debbie Smith, son-in-law Mark Brumbaugh, and five grandchildren. He also leaves behind two brothers, Glyn Smith and Weldon Smith, and two sisters, Joyce Smith and Eyvone Reece, as well as nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his younger brother Robert Everett Smith, Jr. (Bobby) and his older sister Betty Sue Heisler. Services will be held at 10am Monday, September 24 at New Covenant Church in Lampasas. Burial will be at 1pm at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen, TX. Donations can be made to the Caring for Carcinoid Foundation or the Arbor of Hope Orphanage, care of New Covenant Church. Funeral arrangements are by Sneed Funeral Chapel.
