21001 I3362  Smith  Anna Helen  15 Feb 1918  19 Sep 2022  She was said to have married a Clarence Otto around 1945. In the obituaries of at least two of her siblings, however, she is simply listed as Anna Smith.

Obituary

Anna Helen Smith, 104 of Emerald and Lincoln passed away on September 19, 2022. Anna was born on February 15, 1918 on the family farm near Milligan, Nebraska to Edward and Anna (Capek) Smith. She was one of five children. Anna attended elementary school District 96, which was 3/4 mile from the family farm. Anna had perfect attendance in 1930. Anna graduated from Milligan High School in 1935. Shorty after graduation she moved to Lincoln where she worked as a maid.

In 1942, after World War II broke out, she knew there were other opportunities for ladies. Meadow Gold Dairy had an ad in the newspaper for ladies to deliver milk with horse and wagon. She applied and got the job. She felt her farm experience helped her land the job. She delivered milk in the 27th, A to South Street area. Milk was in glass bottles, and sold for 9 cents a quart. She got off work early enough so she was able to acquire a second job. She cooked and served food at the Hi-Y, where the students from the Aviation School ate their meals. Later she worked at Cushman's assembling bomb fuses until the war was over. Later she worked at Western Electric for 10 years. When the company moved from Lincoln to Omaha she opted to stay in Lincoln.

In 1962 she met Ray Wells, a farmer. Together they raised hogs, farmed the land and raised horses. They enjoyed participating in local rodeos. She even learned barrel racing. She retired in 1981 after Ray's death. She then bought a house near Bryan Hospital and had it moved on her property. She spent many hours grooming her flower gardens which contained a multitude of Iris, perennials, and clematis. She was a member of the Lincoln Iris Society. She won awards at the Iris Shows- best color and for having the second most blue ribbons. She lived independently until three months before her 100th birthday. Most recently, she has been a resident at Tabitha long-term care in Crete, Nebraska.

Anna is survived by a daughter, Paula (Michael) Downey, Warner Robins Georgia, three Grandchildren: Jillian (Kirt) Kreutzer, Adam (Kellie) Downey, and Caitlyn Downey, two great grandchildren: Elliot and Jude Kreutzer. Nieces and Nephews: Carol (Jim) Hansen, Denton, Texas, Sharon Featherston, Twin Falls, Idaho, Gary (Chere) Tuttle, Friend, Nebraska, Vickie Garrett, Sarasota, Florida, Martha Synhorst, Cedaredge, Colorado, and David Tuttle, Tekamah, Nebraska, as well as a multitude of great nieces and nephews. She is also survived by many distant relatives and friends from the Iris Club, Denton Historical Society, Extension Service and numerous other clubs with which she was involved, as well as caring neighbors, Eunice and John Cernohlavek and Marge and Ron Grieff.

She was preceded in death by parents, Edward and Anna Smith, Sisters and brother in laws: Helen and George Mika, Clara and Clarence Vanek, Dorothy and Carl Tuttle as well as one brother and sister-in-law: Edward and Helen Smith. She was also preceded in death by her ex-husband, Clarence Otto, and significant other, Ray Wells.

Funeral Services will be held on Friday, September 23, 2022 at 10:30am at Butherus Maser & Love Funeral Home, 4040 A Street, Lincoln, Nebraska. Burial will be at the Emerald Cemetery. 21010 I18  Smith  Avis Augusta  4 Apr 1901  7 Nov 1981  Bert and Ida Smith had a neighbor named Tom Avis, whom they greatly admired. They vowed to name their first child after him, Tom if it was a boy, and Avis if it was a girl. This is how Avis acquired her unusual first name.Thomas Avis was a railroad agent in Odessa. His father was from England. Her middle name, Augusta, was given to her in rememberance of her grandfather, Augustus Elliott. LaVonne Bennett found the following "tidbits" related to the Avis family who was so admired by Bert and Ida Smith. In the Thursday, March 12, 1903 edition of the LAKE ODESSA WAVE newspaper, in a column titled 'Local Splinters': "Homer and Lola Avis were at Lansing Saturday, taking music lessons." The IONIA DAILEY STANDARD, dated April 8, 1909 notes that "Miss Lola Avis is home from Olivet College for Easter vacation." Lola and Homer were the children of Tom and Gertrude Avis, according to the 1900 census.

Avis was an excellent student, and attended Michigan State University, as had her father. Avis's degree was in Human Ecology (Home Economics). She had also studied chemistry, but said that she was told as a woman that she would not be considered qualified to teach this.

In a letter Avis wrote to her oldest granddaughter, Melinda McLemore, after Melinda started college in 1978, Avis recounted her own experiences: "I can remember when I graduated--my Latin teacher wanted me to go to Western Michigan or Kalmazoo College in Kalamazoo, and I wanted to go. But my folks wanted me to go to M.S.U at East Lansing, about 12 miles from home. Then I could help in the store on Saturdays. At the end of the first year, my counselor convinced me that the world was going scientific, and that I should return. I am glad that I did stay with science. But the college was so BIG. 2,000--Ha! I never felt completely at home on that big, sprawling campus." In a later letter she wrote: "The math would frighten me now-as it did when I was a freshman. I loved French. Had a native teacher."

On June 2, 1925, the following letter was sent to Miss Avis Smith, Cass City, Michigan, from W.W. Warner, Superintendent of Saginaw, East Side, Public Schools:

My dear Miss Smith:

Since our interview I have learned from the present outlook at Central Junior High that we are quite likely to have a "Clothing" program in full or in part still unprovided for next year.

I am inclined to think we can use you to advantage on this program. I am therefore enclosing you an appointment card. This carries a salary of $1475. By properly signing the card and returning it to this office, and you yourself retaining this letter as evidence of your appointment you will have a legal contract. Sincerely yours, W.W. Warner

The following year, the Board of Education of Saginaw, Michigan once again employed Avis A. Smith as teacher in its public schools "....commencing September 1, 1926, and agrees to pay as wages for such services and work at the rate of $157.50 per month....."

She was offered a renewal of her contract for the period of September 1, 1927 to July 1, 1928 under the same terms, but at the increased rate of $160 per month. However, she chose to resign at this time, perhaps because of her recent marriage. She received the following letter in response to her resignation:

Saginaw Public Schools Office of the Superintendent Saginaw, Michigan

August Twenty Second Nineteen Twenty Seven

Mrs. Avis Benkelman Box 35 Cass City, Michigan

Dear Mrs. Benkelman

This is to acknowledge receipt of your letter resigning your position with us. I shall be glad to present this to the Board at our next meeting and have no doubt they will accept it. We are sorry to lose your from our school system and wish to thank you for your good work done in the past.

Very sincerely yours,

Harold Steele Superintendent

Although she no longer taught, Avis stayed active and involved with education. She and several close friends from a social group for University Women were tireless volunteers. A pet project was the Rawson Memorial Library (endowed by the Dentist her husband worked for). Her support was remembered many years after she had moved away from Cass City. In a letter dated June 10, 1988 to Melinda Strong, acknowledging a donation made to the Rawson Library in memory of her grandparents, Barbara Hutchison, Director noted that "Your grandparents were indeed well known in Cass City and avid supporters of the library. Your grandmother served on the library board in the 1950's and 60's and was instrumental in laying the groundwork for the outstanding library service that the community enjoys today. They would have been very pleased with the lovely library that we have now. " She also served as treasurer of the Cass City Chapter of the Michigan State College Alumni Association (Cass City Chronicle, Friday, Feb. 8, 1952, Page twelve, column six, M.S.C. Alumni Dinner.)

Avis and her husband, Ben Benkelman of Cass City, Michigan retired in St. Petersburg, Florida, where she died, November 7, 1981.

Her obituary, as published in the St. Petersburg newspaper, follows:

Benkelman, Avis A., 80, of 7901 40th Av. N., died Saturday (Nov. 7, 1981). Born in Lake Odessa, Mich., she came here in 1968 from Cass City, Mich., where she was a school teacher. 21014 I134  Smith  Benjamin Franklin  Abt 1833  6 Jul 1869  Avis (Smith) Benkelman said that her paternal grandparents were William Bert Smith, Sr. and Mary Chatman. However it appears that they were actually Benjamin Franklin Smith and the former Mary Ann Welch--Chapman being the name of her second husband.

Avis also indicated that her maternal grandmother, Sarah Cramer, "was a widow with two small children." However, there is no evidence that Sarah Cramer had been married more than once. Perhaps Avis was confusing Sarah Ann Cramer with Mary Ann Chapman. It was as the widow of Benjamin Smith, with two young sons, that she married Samuel Chapman.

A 28 year old Benjamin Smith, single and born in New York, can be found in Ionia County at the time of the 1860 census. He was living with the Knisel? or Knodsel? family. As the rest of his family is still listed in Riga, New York, it appears he moved to Michigan early, with his brother Morris, and later his mother Marian, following him to Michigan, probably sometime after his father died in 1864.

Even if this is not the same Benjamin Franklin Smith, we do know that he moved to Ionia County sometime before 1866, as his oldest son Elmer was born in Ionia County in January of that year. When he died of typhoid in the summer of 1869, his son Elmer was not quite four, and son Bert was just over a year old.

LaVonne Bennett, an extraordinarily competent and generous researcher from Ionia County, Michigan found the following records:

Ionia County Probate Court Record #187: The estate was valued at $4000. IONIA COUNTY SENTINEL publication of Probate of Will of B. Frank Smith August 2, 1869 and for three consecutive weeks thereon.

Partial listing of amounts paid out of estate: 1)$12.50 to Samuel B. Chapman 1-25-1870 in Odessa, due him from late Frank Smith 2)$100.00 to John El?l?et (Elvert? Elliott?) 3)$17.00 to Libbie ELVART 4)$9.15 to James J. Brown 1-30-1871, from Mrs. Frank Smith 5)$50.00, payment of 9-8-1866 loan from Betsey Johnson 6)$7.00, payment signed by Mary Ann Smith, of 8-8-1870 loan from J. G. Meyers 7)$6.75, payment by Franklin Smith of 5-1-1868 loan from James Wright 8)$2.50, paid by Mary A. Smith, in full account of savings of Frank Smith, to Martin J. Cox 9)$2.25 paid by Mrs. Samuel Chapman, in full account of all demands of R. B. (Rainson?) 10)$3.00 received from Samuel Chapman for Mrs. Mary Ann Smith, in full account of all demands up to date, Odessa, 6-5-1872, by HENRY SMITH 11)$11.92 real estate taxes paid 1-3-1870 by Mrs. Frank Smith, property west 1/2 of southeast 1/4, Section 22, Twp 5N, Range 7W, 80 acres. 12)$23.00, on11-4-1869, received from Mrs. Franklin Smith in balance account to date, L. D. & M. C. SMITH S(tore?) 13)$17.50 for B. F. Smith coffin purchased 7-7-1869, paid by A. A. SMITH 12-20-1870 to S. Merritt & Co. 14)$174.13 paid by Samuel B. Chapman 9-28-1872 and received by Mary A. Chapman 15)$43.00 + interest to S. A. Houghton, as payment for B. F. Smith note made 2-3-1869

Petition in file stating Mary A. Smith was lawfully married to Frank Smith and did love and cohabite with him until his death. Mary A. Chapman makes selection from estate inventory: 1 oxen $130, 1 cow, 2 heifers $35; (wheat $10?), household furniture $75.

Per petition for appointment of administrator, 7-6-1869, heirs listed were widow, Mary Ann Smith; Elmer Smith and Burtis Smith, sons of said deceased. All reside in County of Ionia, MI.

Another petition with date unreadable: Land assigned to Elmer and Burtis subject to dower rights of Mary A. Chapman.

LaVonne Bennett added "from (the) land description of B. Franklin's farm, it was on land on Musgrove Highway and has now (according to 1987 plat book) been subdivided into smaller parcels and some of my Carter relatives lived on the east side of his 80 acres."

OTHER LEADS TO FOLLOW UP ON/POSSIBLE FAMILY CONNECTIONS

LaVonne Bennett noted that some of the names found on the above list are significant to future research---i.e. JAMES BROWN was found as both a creditor and a witness at Samuel and Mary A's marriage. Mary's mother's maiden name was given as Brown on Mary A.'s death record. HENRY and L.D. SMITH, also creditors, might they be related as well?

LaVonne also found, in her discarded Smith files (her mother being a Smith): HENRY SMITH b 1830, d 1-14-1885, age 54, 11, 10, marr Catherine Clark (1835-1915), dau Hattie b 1867, d 1925. There's a Lewis R. SMITH, Carpenter b 1843 in US, d 1-30-1914, father Thomas. Louis D. Smith was a merchant, b 182- in NY, marr Eliza A. Grosvenor, had son Kimball Robert Smith b 1849.

21052 I14049  Smith  Cornelius Franklin "Frank"  25 Mar 1871  14 Jun 1962  From OLD TIMERS OF SABINE COUNTY, TEXAS

Dr. Cornelius Franklin Smith 29 March 1962

Dr. C.F. Smith, veteran Sabine County physician, celebrated his 91st birthday at his home in Hemphill Sunday, March 25, 1962 with members of his family, other relatives and friends. "Dr. Frank," as he is affectionately known, was born on March 25, 1871 at Fairmount, Sabine County, the son of Dr. John Wesley Smith and Caroline Smith (first cousins). Dr. John Wesley Smith had practiced medicine for 52 years prior to his death at the age of 79 in 1923.

Dr. Frank practiced medicine for 60 years before his retirement about three years ago. He began his practice in the Fairdale community in 1899, later establishing offices above Hemphill Drug Company in Hemphill. In the past years, Dr. Frank hasn't been as active as in previous years and folks "around the square" in Hemphill have missed his warm smile and friendly greeting. However, he was able to attend the recent meeting of Littleton Fowler Masonic Lodge.

Recalling his early days as a practicing doctor in an interview last year, Dr. Frank said, "The first 17 years of my practice of medicine was during the horse and buggy days, only mine was mostly "horseback." I have saddled my horse many times in all kinds of weather, put on slickers and overcoats in rainy and cold weather, stretched an umbrella, put my lantern on the bend of my elbow, sometimes not returning for a day or more. I recall one time my horse got scared of the stretched umbrella, threw me and medicine in every direction, but usually I managed to keep gentle horses."

"One time I was called across the Sabine River in Louisiana in a somewhat rowdy vicinity. The ferry was bad and the river was high so I was forced to spend the night. When I went to bed, I slipped my pocketbook under my pillow, thinking it would be safer there. The next morning when I was about a mile away on my way back home, heard someone behind me calling. The man was bringing me my purse, which I had forgotten and left under the pillow."

Dr. Frank says the Model T was warmly welcomed by the doctors and helped to ease their heavy load, even though the times were many when a team of good horses or mules were necessary to pull you and the Model T and later Model A's from the mud holes or deep sand. It was still years before modern highways were constructed.

In February 1896, Dr. Smith was married to Eva Clementine McDaniel, who is now deceased. She was the daughter William (Bill) Watson and Zerowine Joan Smith McDaniel. The McDaniel family came to Texas in 1850 from Spartenburg, South Carolina after stopping for awhile in Itawomba County, Mississippi. There were five children born to this marriage, four of whom are still living. Dr. and Mrs. Smith also raised a foster son, Jack McDaniel of Port Arthur. The children are Mrs. Bertha Peveto of Beaumont, Mrs. Edna (Ted) Barbee of Crockett, Mrs. Sadye Nelsen of Kirbyville, and Robert Earl Smith of Hemphill.

Dorothy Ruth Tuttle was born on January 5, 1925 to Edward and Anna (Capek) Smith on the farm near Milligan, Nebraska. She attended country school District 96 and graduated from Milligan High School in 1942. Dorothy was united in marriage to Carl Tuttle on October 3, 1942 in Papillion, NE. They lived in Lincoln for a short time before returning to the Friend area where they crop and dairy farmed for over 40 years. For many years she taught Sunday School at Friend Gospel Tabernacle as well as being active in the Ladies' Missionary Circle. In 1982 they moved into Friend. Dorothy worked at Warren Memorial Hospital in the laundry, housekeeping, and activities departments for the next 20 years. She was also a member of the Warren Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. After retiring, she occasionally worked at the Lauber-Moore Funeral Home.

Until the time of her death, she was actively involved at the Friend Manor by volunteering with mail, Bingo, and church on Sunday afternoons. Dorothy had a passion for Alzheimer's awareness, which she honored by decorating a Christmas tree in purple every year. As a woman who cared about family, she took pride in chronicling the family genealogy through past pictures, letters, newspaper clippings, scrapbooks, and reunions. She diligently cared for her ever-growing flowerbeds and took great pleasure in hearing that others admired them as well. Ultimately, she will be remembered for her strong faith, steadfast prayer, and her love for the Lord and her family.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Anna; her husband, Carl; sisters and spouses Helen (George) Mika and Clara (Clarence) Vanek; brother and spouse Edward (Helen) Smith; brothers-in-law Elmer Eigsti, Walt Lee, Vestal Boswell, Larry Shacklett, and Swede Mortensen Harold Engel; sisters-in-law Edith Tuttle, Neva Eigsti, Wilmetta Engel, and Geraldine Tuttle.

Odessa-This Monday morning Miss Edith Smith, living half a mile south of the Center, was burned in a frightful manner. It seems some meat had been left in the oven over night, and not knowing or thinking of it, she was getting breakfast with the oven shut up. Smelling something, she opened the door, and the flames burst out, striking her so as to burn all the upper portion of her dress entirely off. Her arms, hands, face and hair also suffered severely. She had been away all the season at work and had just came home on account of the illness of her mother. (Courtesy of John R. Waite jrwgen@mvcc.com) LaVonne Bennett notes this might have been another Edith Smith, as she has in her files an Edith Smith Ousterhout born 1861)

LaVonne Bennett found both this snippet of news in the Lake Odessa Wave newspaper:

All Things Historical by Bob Bowman

Edward Smith deserves his own place in history. Born in Vernon Parish, LA, in 1845 he moved to Newton County, Texas with his parents as a small boy. When he reached 18, he enlisted in the Confederate Army to fight in the Civil War. When federal naval forces approached the Texas coast, Smith and others in his company pushed through the East Texas swamps to reinforce Lieutenant Dick Dowling and his Texas forces at Sabine Pass. With only 40 men, they helped beat back an invasion by federal troops. The battle, the only one ever fought on East Texas soil, saw Smith, Dowling and fellow soldiers outnumbered 100 to one. Despite overwhelming odds, the Texans had no deaths or injuries while the federal force of 27 ships had about 400 mend injured, captured or killed. The Texans were so fierce that the battle lasted only 45 minutes. Following the end of the Civil War, Edward Smith came home to Fairmount, served as its postmaster for 25 years, and became a Baptist preacher. He and his wife and many of their 13 children are buried in the Fairmount cemetery. So are his parents and his wife's mother. His descendants have another story of his bravery. Edward and his dogs were cornered by a bear in the woods near his home. Edward scrambled up a tree and when the bear started climbing after him, Edward whipped otu his pocketknife and slashed the bear's head and paws, while to dogs nipped at the bear's heels. After the dogs started to chase the bear, Edward was able to climb down and run home.

Article from The American Genealogist, Vol. 32, p. 195.
THE WIFE OF LT. SAMUEL SMITH OF WETHERSFIELD
By Paul W. Prindle, B.S., of New York, N.Y.

The wife of Lieutenant Samuel Smith of Wethersfield, Connecticut., has often been named erroneously as Elizabeth Chileab. The following article appeared in abbreviated form in "The Hartford Times, " 8 Jan 1956.

About one year after their arrival from England, Lt. Samuel Smith's wife gave birth to a son,1 to whom they gave the unusual name of Chileab. Someone, possibly Stiles (he must at least be charged with responsibility for passing on the fiction in his "History of Ancient Wethersfield 2:646), assumed that this unusual name must have been the surname of the mother.

It is unfortunate that Stiles failed to consult his Bible concordance. Had he done so, he would have learned that Lt. Smith, a devout man who made a bequest of a Bible in his will to each of his grandchildren gave biblical names to each one of his other sons, - Samuel, Philip and John, - and Chileab was no exception; the original Chileab was the son of King David by
Abigail (II Samuel, 111;3). According to Rev. William Jenks, "Comprehensive Commentary on the Holy Bible" (1836), Chileab signifies "like his father, or the father's picture." Due to the unusual circumstances of Chileab"s birth, Abigail being the lawful wife of Nabal the Carmelite, we may reasonable ascribe the touching choice of the babe's name to Abigail rather than to David. In any event in the 7 Oct. 1929 issue of "The Boston Evening Transcript," one C.D.A. wrote, in answer to query 8072-15. If Lieutenant Smith had named the child Chedorlaomer, Jaazaniah, Yephibosneth, or Maher-shalal-hash-baz ( all biblical masculine names), there would have been as much ground for assuming the selected name was the family name of Elizabeth as there was that it was Chileab.

The identity of Elizabeth, wife of Lt. Samuel Smith, has been determined within the bounds of probability acceptable to careful genealogists. As long ago as 14 Aug 1943, the late Dr. Ray G.Hulbert, in his answer to query A-2442-(6) in "The Hartford Times," gave the facts, which have been repeated on a number of occasions, once at least by the present contributor. Nevertheless, to bring all the known facts together, perhaps for the first time the following account is presented to lay the ghost of Elizabeth Chileab.

The parish registers of St. Margarets's, Whatfield, Co.,Suffolk, England, show the Oct 6, 1624 marriage of Samuel Smyth to Elizabeth Smyth, and the baptism of their son Samuel on Feb 8, 1625 (1625/6?). The young couple next appear at Hadleigh, co. Suffolk, three miles south of Whatfield where, at the church of St. Mary the Virgin, they baptized Elizabeth on Jan 28, 1627 (probably New Style); Mary, Oct. 9, 1628 and Philip, November1632. The Smith, Smyth, Smithe (all interchangeable, of course) family embarked "the last of Aprill, 1634, for New England, in the "Elizabeth," from Ipswich, Mr. Wm. Andrews, "Master" (New England Hist. and Gen. Register, 14:329; Hotten' s "Original Lists," pp. 280, 282; Pope's "Pioneers of Massachusetts"; James William Hook , "Lieut. Samuel Smith (1953), p. 1.The ship's list shows the following ages for the members of the Smith family:"Samuell Smithe,"; 32; "Elizabeth his wife," 32; and children of "Sam. Smith:" Samuel, 9; Elizabeth, 7; Mary, 4; Philip, 1. The ages of the children Samuel, Elizabeth, and Philip exactly correspond with their respective dates of baptism. Mary, however, was 5, not 4. Actually, this record represents a high degree of accuracy. Most ages taken from ships' lists (and from gravestones and census records as well) are questionable unless confirmed by other contemporary records.

There remains little room for doubt that the baptismal records shown above taken from the parish registers in Whatfield and Hadleigh, are of the children who sailed on the "Elizabeth" from Ipswich only ten miles east of Hadleigh, co. Suffolk and that Elizabeth, wife of Lt.Samuel Smith, was a Smith before her marriage.

Per her FindAGrave memorial page:

Her surname has been identified as Smith(or Smyth) from parish registers of St.Margaret's, Whatfield, Co. Suffolk where her marriage to Samuel is recorded. Earlier resources indicating her surname to have been "Chileab" have been refuted. NEHGR Vol.174. A series of articles published in The New England Historical and Genealogical Register published in the Winter, Spring, and Summer of 2020 outline an extensive search of records in Suffolk, England. A review of wills establishes the parentage of Elizabeth as Philip Smith and Ann (Grymwade) Smith.

Church records indicate she was baptized 22 Jul 1599 in Erwarton, Suffolk, England.

Children: Samuel Smith Jr, Elizabeth Smith Foote Gull, Mary Smith Graves, Philip Smith, Philip Smith, Chileab Smith, and John Smith.

He notes that Green Berry Watkins, John E Smith, and Alfred L. Watkins are all documented having sold each other deeds of land in Louisiana. Scott further points out at that the time of the 1850 Sabine County, Texas census, the widowed Mary Smith, age 77, was living with her son, William D. Smith and his family. William was also widowed.
