20001 I39168  Robbins  Era Mae "Sister"  3 Mar 1922  8 Aug 2014  Era Mae Robbins Smith, 92, passed away peacefully on Aug. 8, 2014, at her home in Boerne surrounded by her loving family. She was born on March 3, 1922, in Hemphill to Era Inez Patterson Robbins and Henry Clyde Robbins, Sr.

She is preceded in death by her parents and her older brother, Henry Clyde "Sonny" Robbins, Jr.

Era Mae was orphaned at age 2 and spent her early years in three different households, lovingly cared for by her aunts. She was nicknamed "Sister" by her cousins, with whom she was raised as a sister, and was known throughout her childhood in East Texas by that name. In 1938, at the age of 16, she married her high school sweetheart, Hugh Love Smith, and they moved to Corpus Christi where they resided until they relocated to Boerne in 2010.

Era Mae's life was rich in activities surrounding her family, her friends, and her faith. She loved her Lord and Savior, and her every action bore witness to that love, the unselfish support for her husband, the leadership and tenacity in guiding the lives of her children as they grew, and the tender compassion she showed for others.

As a member of First Baptist Church of Corpus Christi, Era Mae participated and held leadership positions in numerous study, visitation, and outreach ministries. She served on the building committee for the church's chapel and on the leadership development committee. She was a licensed Real Estate Broker and member of the Corpus Christi Board of Realtors, an award-winning photographer, a talented seamstress, cook, decorator and dancer. She spent countless hours teaching her children how to be self-sufficient, and she enthusiastically supported their activities in church, school and scouting.

Era Mae is survived by her devoted husband of 76 years, Hugh Love Smith, Sr.; son, Hugh Love "Clipper" Smith, Jr. (Nona) of Vicksburg, MS; daughter, Sylvia Ann Smith Griffin (Paul) of Boerne; grandchildren, Stephen Randall Smith (Sherri) of Mathis, James Kelly Smith, Abney Gail Smith and Robin Dean Smith of Vicksburg, MS, Christopher Clark Griffin (Ashleigh) of Austin, and Cynthia Griffin Carr (Brian) of Pleasanton; plus eight great-grandchildren upon whom she loved to dote; cousins, Charlotte King Walker of Lufkin and Doris Jean Doiron of Pasadena, and numerous nieces, nephews and caring friends. She is also survived by the loving extended family of Peggy and Ronnie Schlottman of Center Point.

A memorial service celebrating Era Mae's life will be held Mon., Aug. 18, at 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Boerne. To leave condolences, visit www.ebensberger-fisher.com and select the Obituaries tab.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to CASA of South Texas online http:// casasouthtx.org/donate/ or to Jacob's Ladder Learning Center by mail 1017 Harrison St Vicksburg, Mississippi 39180.

Henson and Parmelee have a photo of Benjamin Thomas Roberts in uniform, and note that he served alongside his future brother-in-laws, Leonidas and Americus Cartwright during the Civil War. On May 25, 1861, Lon, Meck "and twenty other volunteers rode to Shelby County, where Captain Short lived, to enlist...Short's company left in June to rendezvous near Dallas, where along with other East Texas units, they were sworn into Col. Elkana Greer's mounted regiment....(and) eventually were designated as the Third Texas Cavalry, and Short's company became Company E." (Henson & Parmelee, THE CARTWRIGHTS OF SAN AUGUSTINE, p. 200, p. 202) Upon reorganization of the regiment on May 8, 1862, Ben T. Roberts became second sergeant of Company E. (ibid, p. 215) He was taken prisoner at Iuka, and paroled, but had to remain in Iuka to care for wounded Confederatte prisoners. (ibid, p. 218).

20027 I11895  Roberts  Catherine  12 Apr 1845  29 Jan 1895  (Research):

Two sources show that the wife of Joseph Tisdale was Catherine Roberts (LZR7-R47), versus Catherine Cox (LTW8-LMF) .

1) Certificate of death for Margaret Anna Reynolds died 27 Feb 1951 in Shreveport LA. Shows her place of birth as Miller County, Arkansas, the daughter of Katherine ROBERTS and Joseph TISDALE.

2) Certificate of death for Roxie Lula Tisdale ADAMS, attached as a memory. She died 3 Feb 1957 in Miller County, Arkansas, and it also shown as the daughter of Katherine ROBERTS and Joseph TISDALE.

Both Margaret and Lula are listed as daughters of Joseph and Catherine TISDALE on the 1880 Miller County, Arkansas census.

The only source showing the name Catherine Cox, is the 1850 Mississippi census, but their is no link to Catherine Cox and Joseph Tisdale shown. It further appears that Catherine Cox (LTW8-LMF) married Edward Bondurant (LTW8-RJF).

Additionally, the Find A Grave memorlal for sons Charles Edward Tisdale and Isaac Memmon Tisdale link them to parents Joseph Tisdale, and Catherine ROBERTS Tisdale, born 12 April 1845 Mississippi and died 29 January 1895. Buried in Holly Springs Cemetery, Miller County, Arkansas. Memorial ID 148766401

https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/148766401/catherine-tisdale

This appears to be a match this family, found on the 1850 Newton, Mississippi census. Note that Isaac and Nancy are both born in South Carolina, which is the location that Catherine reports her parents to have been born on the 1880 Miller, Arkansas census.

Funeral services for Dallas oilman Summerfield G. Roberts, 78, of 6700 Hunters Glen Road, will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday in Sparkman / Hillcrest Funeral Chapel, 7405 W. Northwest Highway. Entombment will be in Hillcrest Mausoleum. Roberts died here Friday night. Survivors: Wife; two sisters, Mrs. Anne Ruth Rash and Mrs. Matthew Cartright Jr. of Terrell, and a brother, Matthew C. Roberts Jr. of Terrell. Dallas Morning News, January 4, 1970

Summerfield G. Roberts, businessman and philanthropist, was born in Dallas, Texas, and graduated from Wesley College at Terrell in 1910. He received his B.A. from the University of Texas in 1914 and his M.B.A. from Harvard University in 1916. On August 15, 1916, he received a patent for an improved water heater that regulated temperature and steam pressure. During World War I Roberts served in the United States Navy and rose from ensign to lieutenant commander. He married Annie Lee Warren on May 15, 1920. In the early 1920s he moved to Dallas and went on to become a successful oil executive and business leader. As a fifth-generation Texan interested in Texas history and culture, Roberts encouraged writing and research on the Republic of Texas by endowing the Summerfield G. Roberts prize for the best Texas history book through the Sons of the Republic of Texas. The first prize was given to Eugene C. Barker for the Life of Stephen F. Austin in 1951. In addition, Roberts donated his James W. Fannin collection to the Dallas Historical Society and provided funds for a rare book library on Texas history. He donated several Frank Reaugh paintings to the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum and commissioned paintings of the heroes of Texas which currently hang in the Texas State Library. Following his death in Dallas, the Summerfield G. Roberts Foundation was established. [bio info from tshaonline.org]

On the annotated transcription of the Payne-Williams cemetery she is shown as a daughter of Willam and Sarah Roberts. It was also shown that she had been married three times, first to Benjamin William Payne, second to Judson M. Meador, and last to John N. Lowery.

Sabine County, Texas Affidavit of B. R. Payne, sworn on August 25, 1927 and witnessed by Edna Whitehead, Notary Public. B. R. Payne was age 74 at that time, and a livelong resident of Sabine County, living about two miles south of Geneva. He was also a grandson of William Roberts, and son of Ursa Ann. He also indicated that his mother later married J. N. Lowery by whom she had no children. He added that Lowery survived his mother by several years, and he did not know who his heirs were. B. R. Payne did not report the marriage to Judson M. Meador noted on the Payne-Williams Cemetery transcription.

This compilation will refute many of the assertions found in a book by Emily Griffin Roberts of Terrell, Texas - "Ancestral Study of Four Families, Roberts, Griffin, Cartwright & Simpson". (1937) Mrs. Roberts believed that one, William Roberts was the father of the brothers who settled in Spanish West Florida before 1810 which is incorrect as George Roberts Sr. who made his will in 1805, was their father. Her list of brothers and sisters is also found to be incorrect. The above will had not been discovered at the time she made these assertions.[4]

20074 I36899  Roche  Edmund Maurice Burke  15 May 1885  8 Jul 1955  Wikipedia Biography of Edmund Maurice Burke Roche

Roche was born in Chelsea, London, [1] the elder of twin sons of the Hon. James Roche (later Baron Fermoy) and his wife, Frances Ellen Work. He was educated at Harvard University, but returned to England on succeeding to his father's title in 1920. He rented Park House, Sandringham, Norfolk from the Royal Family and at the 1924 general election, he contested and won the local parliamentary constituency, King's Lynn, holding the seat until he stood down at the 1935 general election. [2][3] He was also elected the town's mayor in 1931. [4]

On 17 September 1931, Lord Fermoy married Ruth Sylvia Gill (the youngest daughter of Col. William Gill) at St. Devenick's, Bieldside, Aberdeenshire [1] and they had three children:

a) Hon. Mary Cynthia (b. 1934),
married
(1) Hon. Sir Anthony Berry (divorced 1966),
(2) Denis Geoghegan (divorced 1980),
(3) Michael Gunningham (divorced 1989)

b) Hon. Frances Ruth (b. 1936),
married
(1) Edward Spencer, Viscount Althorp (divorced 1969),
(2) Peter Shand Kydd

c) Hon. Edmund James Burke (b. 1939), later the 5th Baron Fermoy.

Lord Fermoy joined the Royal Air Force in 1939 at the start of World War II but when the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for King's Lynn was killed on active service in 1943, he resigned his commission and stood for re-election. He retired from politics when Parliament was dissolved for the 1945 general election. [2]

Lord Fermoy collapsed in a shop at King's Lynn, Norfolk in June 1955 and died three weeks later. [2] He was succeeded by his only son.

20075 I36901  Roche  Frances Ruth  20 Jan 1936  2 Jun 2004  Wikipedia Biography of Frances Ruth Roche

Frances Ruth Shand Kydd (n?e Roche, formerly Viscountess Althorp) (20 January 1936 ? 3 June 2004) was the first wife of John Spencer, 8th Earl Spencer and the mother of Diana, Princess of Wales. After two failed marriages and the deaths of two children, she devoted her later years to Roman Catholic charity work. Frances Ruth Roche was born in Park House, on the royal estate at Sandringham, Norfolk.[1] Her father was Edmund Roche, 4th Baron Fermoy, a friend of King George VI and the elder son of the American heiress Frances Work and her first husband, the 3rd Baron Fermoy. Her mother Ruth, Lady Fermoy DCVO was a confidante and lady-in-waiting to Queen Elizabeth (later the Queen Mother). On 1 June 1954, aged 18, Roche married John Spencer, Viscount Althorp (later the 8th Earl Spencer) at Westminster Abbey. She was then known as Viscountess Althorp (the name is pronounced Altrup).

The Althorps had five children:

Elizabeth Sarah Lavinia Spencer (19 March 1955), who married Neil Edmund McCorquodale, a distant cousin of Raine, Countess Spencer

Cynthia Jane Spencer later Baroness Fellowes (11 February 1957), who married Sir Robert Fellowes, later Baron Fellowes

John Spencer, who died within 10 hours of his birth on 12 January 1960

Diana Frances Spencer later Diana, Princess of Wales (1 July 1961? 31 August 1997), first wife of Charles, Prince of Wales

Charles Edward Maurice Spencer, 9th Earl Spencer (20 May 1964), who married Victoria Lockwood, then Caroline Freud (the latter formerly wife of Matthew Freud)

The British media made comparisons between Lady Althorp's and Diana's lives, because both were inexperienced young women who were thrust into the spotlight by marriage to much older men in higher stations to whom they were unfaithful. As with the marriage of the Prince and Princess of Wales, the marriage between Lord and Lady Althorp was not a happy one.

20076 I36898  Roche  James Boothby Burke  28 Jul 1852  30 Oct 1920  Wikipedia Biography James Boothby Burke Roche

James Boothby Burke Roche, 3rd Baron Fermoy (28 July 1852 ? 30 October 1920) was an Irish peer and a Member of Parliament (MP) in the United Kingdom House of Commons. He was the great-grandfather of Diana, Princess of Wales.

He was born at Twyford Abbey, Middlesex in 1852, the son of Edmond Burke Roche, and his wife Eliza Caroline n?e Boothby.[1] He was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge.[2]

He visited the United States where he met and married the heiress Frances Ellen Work on 22 September 1880 at Christ Church, New York City. The marriage was not a success and they separated in December 1886. She was granted a divorce on the grounds of desertion on 3 March 1891 at Wilmington, Delaware.[3]

They had four children, twin sons and two daughters:

Eileen (b. and d. 1882)

Cynthia (10 April 1884 - 8 December 1966), who married firstly Arthur Scott Burden (d. June 1921) in 1906 and secondly Guy Fairfax Cary (d. 1950) in 1922. She is the matrilineal great-grandmother of American actor Oliver Platt.

Edmund Maurice Burke (15 May 1885 ? 8 July 1955), who was the grandfather of Diana, Princess of Wales.

Francis George Burke (15 May 1885 ? 30 October 1958), who died unmarried.[4]

In 1896 he stood as an Anti-Parnellite Nationalist candidate in the Kerry East by-election for a seat in the Parliament of the United Kingdom. The Nationalists had split into two factions after the party leader, Charles Stewart Parnell was named as co-respondent in a divorce. Roche was supported initially by both the Parnellites and the Anti-Parnellites, until it was revealed that he was himself divorced. During the campaign, Roche denied publicly that he knew of the divorce or that he had deserted his wife and children.[5] Although he went on to win the seat, the opposing Unionist candidate gained the highest vote ever recorded for a Unionist candidate in Kerry East.[6] He served one term and did not stand in the following general election in 1900.

On 1 September 1920 he succeeded his brother as Baron Fermoy. Just two months later he died at Artillery Mansions, Westminster, London. He was buried at St Marylebone Cemetery, Finchley on 3 November 1920.[7]

Maj. B.A. Rogers

Death of This Venerable Citizen

On Friday morning last our community was shocked at the intelligence that Maj. Benjamin A. Rogers was not more--that his spirit had passed from earth to that "bourne whence no traveler returns." Maj. Rogers had been in his usual health, and retired at 11 o'clock Thursday night. The next morning at an early hour his daughter found him lying in his room, entirely unconscious, in which condition he remained until 11 o'clock, when the flickering spark of life fled. At the time he was stricken, the only member the family at home was his daughter, Miss Olive, his wife and daughter being in Nashville, and Mr. B. A. Rogers, Jr. being at Bailey Springs. The latter hurried to the side of his father, and arrived before his death. Mrs. Rogers and Miss Harriet were promptly reached by wife and arrived on the early afternoon train. Mr. T. M. Rogers arrived from Columbus, Miss., the same evening, the entire family thus being present at the last sad rites.

The cause of death appears to have been from the brain, and was altogether unexpected. The body was interred in the city cemetery on Saturday afternoon at 5 o'clock, after services in the Methodist church (of which the deceased had long been a member), conducted by Rev. S. E. Wasson. A large congregation attended the services.

Maj. Rogers is survived by his wife and four children, to whom, in their profound sorrow the warmest symphaty of our people is extended. He was in the 70th year of his age.

Thus has passed away one of our best and most useful citizen, a gentlemen who was ever ready by his labor and his means to advance every worthy cause. He came among us about eight years ago, from Columbia, Tenn., and by his genial manners, his public spirit, and his loyalty to the right, had won a large circle of friends, who heard of his sudden and distressing death with sincere sorrow.
