A lookup volunteer checked the 1912 and 1916 City Directories for Chelsea, but was not able to find either Edwin or Janet Poole listed. I was not able to find either Edwin or Janet Poole in the 1920 Mass soundex. Could they already have moved from Mass and be in transit? Jake Schopf writes that "Edwin was an adventurer. He homesteaded north of Edmondton, Alberta. He did some oil exploration. He signed up for the Canadian Expeditionary Forces and fought in World War I. He received a medal for bravery. He was never able to settle down long enough to enjoy the benefits of his investments. He played the concertina well." |

Services will be Friday, 2pm Solie Chapel, with Pastor Oscar Hegg officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery. Flowers are welcome, but for those wishing memorials may be made to Brazilla church Building Fund, care of Calvary First Baptist Church, 3332 Colby, Everett." I requested a copy of her Form SS-5 and it was issued in the name of Emma Georgiana Fort of 6095 W. Hall Street, Portland, Oregan. She was 39 years old at the date of the application, having been born on October 12, 1902 in LaMoure, North Dakota. Her parents were John Alfred Fort and Lewella Elizabeth Watts. She was not employed at the time she completed the application, on May 19, 1942. She must have later married a Poole, but currently there is not enough information to determine if she married one of Grace's brothers, or if there were several Emma Poole's in Portland. Her age seems appropriate to have been married to one of Grace's brothers. Perhaps obtaining a copy of her obituary would help resolve this one way or another. |

In August of that year, one Oliver Porter was listed on the indenture between Cherokee Indian Chief DOUBLEHEAD and John CHISOLM. Also, on December 20, 1807, on Oliver Porter's recommendation, a passport was issued for three men to pass through the Creek Indian nation. In March of 1809, a passport for David Porter and family was issued and signed. However, it was between the years 1825 and 1830 that brought Hugh Porter, his wife Sarah Bowie Porter, and children from South Carolina as well as Austin Porter, his wife and two boys, and Charles B. Porter and four children into Lauderdale County. They entered and purchased land in and near what is now the city of Rogersville. Hugh entered 158 acres on Weavers Branch, and he and his family lived there until 1840. In the 1830's other members of their family also moved from South Carolina. They procured land mostly along Snake Road northeast of Rogersville. Brothers and sisters of Hugh Porter were Charles B. Porter, William R. Porter, Andrew Springer Porter, Mary Porter, Rebecca Frances Porter HOWIE, Cynthia Porter Howard, and Ann E. Porter FORBES. Brothers John Porter and Samuel Norwood Porter died in South Carolina. In 1840, Hugh Porter purchased land northeast of Lexington on Second Creek. Being not only a farmer but a miller as well, he built a grist mill on the creek. Some of his brothers and sisters soon followed him to Lexington. Charles B. Porter moved to Lawrence County, Tennessee. He was a farmer and a Cumberland Presbyterian minister. Andrew Springer Porter was postmaster at Lexington from 1856 to 1867 and a justice of the peace. William R. Porter ran a store and was a justice of the peace. Andrew W. Porter owned a store and his son, George Washington Porter, was the circuit court clerk for Lauderdale County. His grandson, Irvine Craig Porter, Jr., became a prominent attorney in Birmingham. Hugh Porter was born June 12, 1791. His wife, Sarah C. BOWIE, was born August 22, 1793. They were married September 19, 1814. Their children were James Glen, who married Elizabeth JOHNSTON, first, and E.A. Bettie DAVIS, second; Rebecca Burney, who married Green B. DAVIS; Andrew Eli, who married Frances A. DAVIS; Katherine Eliza, who married John H. BELEW; Jane Ann, who married James T. DAVIS; Charles Wesley, who married Margaret Emily McGWIER, John Fletcher, who married Nancy J. DAVIS; and Simathy E., who married Francis H. McGWIER. Hugh Porter and family belonged to the Methodist Church. They attended Asbury Church, which was just across the Alabama state line in Tennessee which was just off what is now Highway 101. Most of their descendants are devout Christians attend various churches. In the obituary of their son Charles Wesley, we find his devotion to the Lord. "Even though his mind was so affected in the last few years of his life that he did not know his own children, yet he never forgot to read his Bible and pray." James Glen Porter was a blacksmith and wagon maker. His brother, John Fletcher, was a miller and he also made tombstones from limestone taken from the bluffs of Second Creek. Andrew Eli worked as a plantation overseer until the War Between the States. Charles Wesley made his living farming. Two members of Hugh Porter's family lost their lives as members of the Confederate forces during the Civil War. Andrew Eli joined the 16th Alabama Infantry on August 6, 1861, which was under General Zollikoffer's command. He either died of exposure, disease, or was killed in battle. Hugh's grandson, John F.M. Porter, whose father was James Glen, was killed in the Second Battle of Manassas on August 30, 1862. He was a member of Company I of the 9th Alabama Infantry Regiment. There may have been others who served as well. Many of the descendants of Hugh and Sarah served with honor and distinction in our country's armed forces during World War I and II, and Korean Conflict, and the Vietnam War. During World War II, Walter, son of James W. Porter, was killed in France. The Porter family was always interested in education. Many of the Porters' descendants have college degrees and have pursued professional occupations. There was a school erected on the Porters' property before 1900 and served the community for many years. The first Portertown school was a one room log building with grades one through six. It was on the west side of Second Creek near a road which at that time ran from the Charlie Porter home place to past the Portertown Cemetery then on to Tennessee. The second school was on a rise just west of what is now the Royce and Alma WILLIAMS' home. The third school was on the east side of Second Creek on the property given by Samuel WILLIAMS. Sent by Janie Porter Gomillion, July 2001) On a visit to the Portertown Cemetery one will find the tombstones of a lot of the early settlers and not just Porters. It is a well kept cemetery that is used by many descendants of those early settlers as well as others. Hugh Porter died October 12, 1855 and Sarah Bowie Porter died May 9, 1862. They were survived by their eight children and 34 grandchildren. Porter Town was also north of Lexington and near Dugout. It was named for several Porter families who settled here from Abbeville, South Carolina, during the 1820s. Hugh and Sarah Bowie Porter were born in the early 1790s. Their son, James Gleen Porter, established a grist mill and blacksmith shop in this community. Hugh's nephew, Washington Porter, was also here as well as a widow, Rebecca Porter, who was born in 1790 in North Carolina. Her son, Andrew was a native of South Carolina. From William Lindsey McDonald, "A Walk Through the Past - People and Places of Florence and Lauderdale County, Alabama"; Florence, Alabama, Country Lane Printing, 1997 (pp 147-148). In the 1830 Lauderdale Co census Anderson Porter was listed as follow: 2m 20-30, 1m 60-70; 1f 15-20, 3f 20-30, 1f 60-70, 1 slave. Walter Palmore noted that Hugh Porter was listed in the 1840 Lauderdale Co Al census on page 116 (43) as follow: 0201101-0111101. It also states that she married Francis (sic) H McGwier.... he added that F H and Cynthia E McGuire are buried in the Portertown Cemetery. Email dated 4 June 2007: I seem to have a very difficult time finding other descendants of my Porter line with whom to work on confirming the parents of James Porter who m. 1) Rebecca Chrisman, removed from Jessamine Co. KY to Marion Co. MO in 1829 and d. 1866 in Lewis Co., and who I believe may be the father of this John Piercel Porter. Finding the middle name of this John is, I believe, an important piece of the puzzle as Sarah Piersol is reported to be the mother of the Porter I think may be James' father. Certainly at the time of John's death only one child of James was still living, a daughter, Mary Love (Porter) Myers of Newark, Lewis, MO. John's obit said he had one sister living. Two sons of James Porter also married Marshall women - Joseph Chrisman Porter m. 1844 Mary Ann E. Marshall (b. ca 1823 VA; d. ca 1867). James William Porter m. 1853 Elizabeth Columbia Marshall (b. ca 1835 MO; d. ca 1868) Reportedly they were sisters, but I don't know who their parents were. When I saw that John Piercel Porter also m. a Marshall I was intrigued. [Note: Unfortunately, there is not information about either of these Marshall's on this website]. I had contacted you back in 2007 about the John Piercel Porter who is included in your Strong family tree, wondering if perhaps he was the son of my ancestors James and Rebecca (Chrisman) Porter of KY who settled in Lewis Co. MO in about 1828. It would appear that he was the nephew of James and the son of William and Mary (Runyan) Porter. While researching last fall at the Kentucky Historical Society in Frankfort, KY, I came across a page in the Porter family file. It it dated 3 Oct 1981, but the name of the person who submitted it is not noted. The author wrote: "FACT: My gt-grandfather was William Pike Porter, b 10 Dec 1815 in Franklyn [sic] Co., Ky. d 1874 in Lewis Co., MO. His brothers and sisters as follows: John Piercel, Susan, Edward, Samuel, James, Anna and Thomas G. The parents of these children: (John) William Porter or William Porter Jr. m 1810 to Mary Runyon. They sold Frankfort property in 1820." I would imagine that this person was close enough to the people with firsthand knowledge to be certain of the accuracy of the above statement. He goes on to state that he has a copy of the will of Wiliam Porter b 1729 in Chester Co., PA, removed to Adams Co., PA and d 1802. His wife was Sarah Piercel (various spellings). Three of their sons (James, Nathaniel, and William) removed to KY. I will add here that James m. Margaret Patterson and d. 1830 in Woodford Co., KY. William m. Hannah Kennedy and then removed to TN. His family is well documented as he was the grandfather of Gov. James Davis Porter of TN. I have seen the work of a Porter researcher who says Nathaniel also removed to TN and d. 1813 in Bedford County. The author then states that the James Porter who m. Rebecca Chrisman and the William Porter who m. Mary Runyon were brothers, his gt-grandfather William Pike Porter being the first cousin of Col. Joseph Chrisman Porter, b 1819 in Jessamine Co., KY (James and Rebecca's son.) [James and William appear on the same page of the 1850 Lewis Co., MO census.] His question is who was the father of these brothers, James and William? Was he either James or Nathaniel, sons of William Porter (1729-1802) of PA? I have long suspected, though have been unable to prove, that my James Porter was the son of James and Margaret (Patterson) Porter. In the above-mentioned 1850 census, William is family 235, James is family 237 and family 238 is that of Osbourn McCrackin who m. Sally Porter, the daughter of James and Margaret, as proved by Osbourn's receiving a share of James' estate in Woodford Co. KY. (James d. intestate, but settlement of his estate is on file in Woodford Co. William Porter is also listed, but not James.) It seems to me too much of a coincidence that these three Porters are living right next to each other in Missouri if they weren't siblings. I won't go into further details, I think this is already confusing enough, but if anyone would be interested in more information from me on this theory, they can contact me. Suffice it to say for now that it seems the father of John Piercel Porter was William Porter, b. 11 Oct 1780, m. 1810 in KY Mary Runyan, and who d. 3 Oct 1872 in Lewis Co., MO. Further, that John Piercel Porter was therefore the nephew of James Porter, b. 2 Aug 1789 in KY or PA, and who d. 22 Jan 1866 in Marion Co., MO. Gladys was said to be related to Lily Rowe, wife of Emory Howard Gentry; however, the connection, if any, would appear to be remote. Dukey died in 1953, with Gladys surviving until 1995. She was said to have remarried after his death. She and Dukey, however, are buried side by side with a double tombstone. Above her name, DIEFENBAKER is also engraved. This was her name at the time of her death, as noted on the SSDI entry below, and was the surname of her second husband, Roy Diefenbaker. Lyn Cordell recalls that Roy worked in a western clothing store here in town and wore what he sold, so he was the best dressed cowboy around! Mrs. Diefenbaker was the daughter of William and Minnie Powell and was born in Stephens County near Duncan on March 22, 1906. She was a graduate of Tuttle High School and received her bachelor's degree from Central State College in Edmond. She taught school for several years in Oklahoma before marrying John Earl Payne on Oct. 13, 1931, in Chickasha. After the death of her first husband she married Ray Diefenbaker in Santa Fe, N.M., on June 4, 1960. He died Dec. 1, 1990. Mrs. Diefenbaker taught school in Oklahoma and New Mexico for over 40 years. She was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Mrs. Diefenbaker is survived by a daughter, Virginia Strain Oller, of Artesia, a sister, Minnie Mae Powell, of Artesia; four grandchildren, Jenny Lynn Heffington and Rick Strain, both of Duncan, and T. She died Dec. 26, 1996, at the age of 89 years and 1 day. She attended country school and Powell school and graduated from Fairbury High School in 1926. She taught school near Daykin. She was united in marriage to Ernest Arthur Mafaffey of rural Hebron, June 3, 1928. Six children, two sons and four daughters were born to this union. Her hobbies were quilting, and other crafts. She was baptized into the Methodist Church in Bruning, on Jan. of 1961, and transferred to the Presbyterian church in Alexandria on Jan. 18, 1970. In 1967, she moved into Alexandria where she lived until she became a resident at the Blue Valley Lutheran Home in Hebron, Nov. 1995. Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, and brothers. Survivors include her son, Larry Mahaffey, daughters, Lois Ream and her husband Daryl and Luree Marschman and her husband Ernest of Alexandria, Linda--_and her husband Dale of Dewitt, and Lula Korber and her husband David of Bern, Kansas, 13 grandchildren 12 great grandchildren, brothers, Harold Powell, and his wife Mildred, and Delmer Powell and his wife Vera of Fairbury, and other relatives. Services were Dec. 30 from the Alexandria Presbyterian church with Sylvia Cross officiating. Pallbearers were her grandsons. Burial was in the Fairbury cemetery. |
