19145 I5818  Phenis  Orpha Anise  28 Sep 1875  24 Sep 1953  Address in 1926: RR4, Perkins, OK.

Orpha Anise Phenis was born in Madison, Kansas, September 28, 1875 and died September 24, 1953, at Cresthaven Rest Home, Olympia, Washington, at the age of 77 years, 11 months and 27 days. She was the daughter of William Riley & Flora Jane Phenis. She moved with her parents to Oklahoma at the age of 14 when her father made the run for the opening of Oklahoma Territory in 1889, staking a claim near Guthrie. The family resided there until 1897 when they moved to Perkins.
She taught school two years in Logan County and 14 years in Payne County, including two years at Forest Valley where she was teaching when she was married to Edwin Thomas on September 21, 1904, at Agra, Oklahoma. To this union, five children were born.

The couple lived in Ripley until 1906 when they moved to a farm in Forest Valley community where they resided until a few months before the death of her husband. She was a member of the Christian Church and a charter member of Forest Valley Farm Women's Club and remained a member until she moved to Stillwater. After the husband's death, she lived at 1005 Main Street, Stillwater, until four years ago when she moved to Olympia, Washington, to make her home with her daughter, Lorene.

Her father built the original structure of the present Christian Church at Perkins. Her father, mother, and brother Evart Phenis were charter members of the Church at Perkins when it was organized on Sunday, March 6, 1898, and her membership was transferred to this church about 1899. Her father was one of the first three elders of the church and her brother, Evart, was clerk of the church board in 1899.

Survivors include three children: Wayne H. Thomas, 612 South Ninth, Yukon, Oklahoma; Mrs. Lorene Mahurin, Olympia, Washington; and Mrs. DeeVilla Clark, Stillwater, Oklahoma; one sister, Mrs. Ethel McWethy, 1010 W. Admiral Road, Stillwater, Oklahoma, six grandchildren, two great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband on January 28, 1945, and by two children who died in infancy, her parents, and one brother.

19146 I5802  Phenis  Solomon Austin  10 Dec 1817  1 Jul 1903  Ken Harvey writes that:

"Solomon Phenis was born on 10th Dec 1810 according to Mead McWethy. This contradicts other records. Phenis is a German name and the original immigrant ancestor was thought to have been a Hessian soldier employed by the British during the American Revolution. He is therefore thought to have come from the then German state of Hesse.

One Phenis brother is said to have died in in the war, another said to have returned to Hesse, and the the third one married a local girl.

The family is known to have moved from Indiana to Kansas. On the basis of submitted I.G.I. birth data the family appear to have moved from Kokomo, Howard, Indiana to the Madison-Emporia area of Kansas between 1851 and 1858. Strangely the as yet unexamined census data appears to suggest that the family moved after 1860.

[Note: A Solomon Phenis, born ca 1811 in Indiana, was living in Union County, Indiana in 1870--the two families may have been conflated]

Solomon Phenis's watch, made in 1879 or earlier, is in the possession of Franklin Meade McWethy's children (1996)."

From FindAGrave:

Kansas Collection Books: William G. Cutler's History of the State of Kansas, Greenwood Co., Part 10:

SOLOMON PHENIS, farmer, Section 13, P. O. Madison, is one of the oldest settlers of this region. Born in Preble County, Ohio, in 1817. His parents removed to Indiana in 1823, and in 1855 he, with five of his neighbors from Hamilton County, that State, started for Kansas, making the journey by ox-team in thirty-four days; and locating upon the banks of a small stream, which has ever since been known as "Phenis Creek," upon the north line of what was then Madison County, bur subsequently became part of Lyon.

The party was joined during the same year by a brother of Mr. Phenis (Judge J. R. Phenis) and several of his former neighbors, thus forming quite a settlement. Lawrence was then their nearest post office and the mail was delivered weekly by carriers from that city, the settlers here paying him at the rate of a dollar per month for each family. This continued until the post office was established at Emporia.

In 1860, Mr. Phenis was thrown from his horse and his thigh bone broken, which, being imperfectly set, owing to no medical man being at hand, has rendered him a cripple for life, and in spite of of his earnest desire to do so, prevented his entering the army. In 1863, he removed to this county, locating on a farm on Section 25, Town 22, Range 12, this township, where he remained until October, 1880, when he sold it and removed to his present one, which is nearer town, and upon which he has built a very fine house, the interior of which is very conveniently arranged and thoroughly furnished throughout, costing $1,500. Nearly half of his present farm is under cultivation, his corn yield being fifty-five bushels per acre.

In 1839, Mr. Phenis married Miss Sarah Coats, who bore him thirteen children, the eldest of whom, Cyrus, born May 23, 1841, enlisted May 13, 1862, in Company B, Ninth Kansas Cavalry, and served three years, being discharged May 18, 1865, and who, while upon his return home was taken ill, and died at Emporia upon the anniversary of his birth, May 23, 1865. The remaining nine children now left to Mr. Phenis are Esley, born August 28, 1842; John Newton, born June 11, 1847; Isaac, January 23, 1848; Charles, February 14, 1850; William Riley April 14, 1852; Evangeline, April 2, 1854; Nina, January 23, 1858;Hannah, February 28, 1861; and Ellsworth, April 21, 1862. All save the youngest are married, and all reside in the State and have made the subject of this sketch a grandfather no less than twenty-two times. Mrs. Phenis died October 11, 1876, and on January 18, 1877, he married his present consort, Mrs. Elizabeth Jones, nee Harrison, who is also one of the earlier settlers of the State. Mr. P. has never cared to accept any office, and, although twice elected County Commissioner, refused to serve; upon the last occasion, although compelled to qualify in order to satisfy the desires of his friends, he resigned the next day. His brother, I. R. Phenis, is Probate Judge of the county.

He is shown on FindAGrave as a son of Solomon W. Phenis of Wilkes County, GA and Elizabeth Hammond. of Oglethorpe, GA.

Obituary

Ida May Payne
By Elder W.H. George

The death angel came to the home of Bro. L.J. Payne and took from him his dear companion. On November 2, the spirit of Sister Payne left the old tabernacle of clay and went to God. On November Fourth the body was carried to the Church of Christ in Marlow to bestow that last sad rite.

In this little church I am sure is she could speak she would say that some of the most pleasant and sweetest moments of her life were spent in the study of the Bible and in the service of her God.

The great crowd that attended this funeral service was a token of memory of the sweet influence in life. Willing hands and loving hearts did all that could be done to help the loved ones to bear the great burden of sorrow.

The Church of Christ of Duncan, the Church of Christ of Rush Springs helped to share in our burden of sorrow, with their presence, their prayers, sympathy and song and beautiful flowers. The floral offerings of the many friends and loved ones were beautiful.

Will say to Brother Payne, the aged father and mother, brothers and sisters who are left behind, weep not as though they have no hope.

The writer tried to speak words of comfort to the bereaved ones.

Is not heaven nearer and sweeter because a loved one has gone on?

Marlow Cemetery Records show that Ida Mae Payne was born Oct 1 1892 died 2 Nov 1925.

This obituary appears to relate to the same woman, however, in the obituary it appears that she was married to an L.J. Payne, and not Walter Winkle. This discrepency should be resolved.

19168 I30584  Pierce  Amos  31 Jul 1784  20 Jul 1872  Amos Pierce was born in Vermont, July 31, 1784, where he spent his boyhood days. Removing from Vermont, he settled in western New York, where he was engaged in blacksmithing, proving himself an expert in making the first bolts and ironwork on the New York and Erie canal. In 1811, he was married to Miss Mary Sanford. She was born in 1790, and died September 30, 1845. His second marriage was to Mrs. Evaline Woods. Mr. Pierce removed from New York to Ashtabula county, Ohio. He came to Illinois in 1834, and bought a quarter section of land in Knox county. The village of Altona is located on this same quarter. After he had bought it, he became dissatisfied, as there was no timber on the land. He then sold it and went to St. Augustine, where he met with some old settlers who went with him to Greenfield (now Greenbush), where he bought land south of the village, on section 7. Here he built his log house of three rooms, and here he spent the remainder of his days, farming, blacksmithing, and running a sawmill on Nigger creek, a short distance south of his residence. This mill was built by Cornelius Clover, who then resided near St. Augustine. It was run by water-power, and had an up-and-down saw. The log was drawn against the saw with a wheel, having notched segments on the outer circle and wood pins on the side. When the board was sawed, the sawyer stepped on the pins to return the log. This action was called "treading back the ragwheel.'' Many of the old settlers procured lumber here to use in the construction of their houses, and for other purposes. The old mill played its part in the early days, and then passed into decay. It is said that at the home of Amos Pierce strangers and friends were welcome alike, and that his home was a refuge for the colored man on his way to Canada for freedom. He was industrious, and stood for temperance, education, progression, and a liberal religion; and was a member of the Universalist church. In politics he was a republican. He died July 20, 1872.

Amos Pierce, the subject of this sketch, was the seventh in descent from Thomas Pierce, the emigrant ancestor of this branch of the Pierce family. Thomas Pierce came from England to this country, in 1633, with his wife Elizabeth, and settled in Charlestown, Mass.
