    • Josephine came to the United States in 1881 at the age of 18. She worked as a maid in Pittsburgh briefly before coming to the Milligan area in 1882 to homestead with her aunt and uncle, Barbara SVOBODA and John KOTAS. After being twice widowed, she established an enterprise serving meals to the public, with the help of her daughter Emma. (p 316).
