Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Phillip Cramer was born on 17 Mar 1769 in Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania; died on 4 Aug 1859 in York County, Pennsylvania; was buried in Saint Davids Church (United Church of Christ) Cemetery, Hanover, York County, Pennsylvania.

    Notes:

His listing of FindAGrave shows he married Dorothy Elizabeth Menchey, and was the father of Christina Cramer Utz.

However, Robert Givens, in a 1988 genealogy titled "Neidig Genealogy Origins of the Family" stated that Daniel Cramer's son Phillip Cramer instead married Christina Neidig, daughter of Johannes and sister of Henrietta Sophia Neidig, wife of Phillip's eldest brother, Helfer Cramer.

It appears that Daniel's son Phillip did indeed marry a woman named Christina, based on the following deed, which references "Philip Kromer with Christina his wife"

Edith Beard Cannon, in "Genealogical Reports for The Historical Society of York County, Vol. XXIX, p. 52, Evidence of the Cramer Families of York before the year 1850 REVISED" published 1943, cited the following deed (2R, 422) April 15, 1805. Helfrich Kromer of Codorus Township, yeoman, and Sophia his wife: to George WERNER; for (Pounds) 49.10.0: 8 acres, 140 perches, part of tract of 109 acres 126 perches surveyed ) October 14, 1768, to Daniel Kromer in pursuance of an application for 100 acres dated September 13, 1768, now the property of the said Helfrick Kromer as it appears by released of his brother Daniel Kromer bearing date Aug. 29, 1782, given to his brother Philip Kromer with Christina his wife conveyed the same to Helfrick on April 9, 1791.

Perhaps Dorothy Menchey was a second wife.

Givens also writes that Phillip and Christina were the parents of 8 children, all of whom were christened at St. Jacobs. His list shows these children as: Johannes/John Cramer b. 29 Oct 1782; Christina Cramer, b. 10 July 1784 and married Mr. Gosnell; Maria Barbara Cramer, b. 7 Mar 1786 and m. Mr. Markley, Helfer/Helser Cramer b. 6 Apr 1790, Peter Cramer b. ???, Daniel Cramer b. ??? and d. 1845, Molly Cramer b. ??? and m. Mr. Cochran, and Anna Margaret Cramer, b. ??? and d. 1845. Dean Cramer has an identical list of children born to Daniel's son Phillip Cramer by Christina Neidig. He also noted that "I suspect Phillip may have also been named Henry...."

A database on Ancestry.com [Ancestry.com - York County, Pennsylvania Church Records, 1760-1800: Codorus Township] does have the following baptism records relating to four children born to a Phillip Cramer and a Christina Neidig:

Johannes Cramer, 1 Dec 1782, Saint Jacobs (Stone) Union Church, Codorus Twp, York County, Pennsylvania

Christina Cramer, 5 Aug 1784, Saint Jacobs (Stone) Union Church, Codorus Twp, York County, Pennsylvania

Maria Barbara Cramer, 11 Mar 1786, Saint Jacobs (Stone) Union Church, Codorus Twp, York County, Pennsylvania

Helfer Cramer, 26 Apr 1790, Saint Jacobs (Stone) Union Church, Codorus Twp, York County, Pennsylvania

It appears likely, however, that the husband of Christina Neidig was more likely another, older, Phillip Cramer. Daniel's son Phillip would have been only 13 years old when the eldest child was christened. Additionally Robert Givens stated that Phillips wife Christina was confirmed in St. Paul's in 1770 at the age of 14, so this would mean she was born about 1756. This would have made her 13 years older than her husband. If they married in 1782, prior to the birth of eldest son Johannes, Daniel's son Phillip would have been only 13, and his bride 26.

The family of Phillip Cramer and Christina Neidig should be studied further before conclusively linking them with the Phillip Cramer who was a son of Daniel Cramer and Anna Margaretha Schmidt.

Edith Beard Cannon, in "Genealogical Reports for The Historical Society of York County, Vol. XXIX, p. 53, Evidence of the Cramer Families of York before the year 1850 REVISED" published 1843, cited the following deeds relating to a Philip Cramer of Manheim.

(3C, 142) April 20, 1816. Stephen SHORB and Christina his wife; to Philip Cramer of Manheim Township, yeoman; for $417.72; 33 acres 120 perches in Manheim Township.

(3G, 362) April 26, 1823. John STICK and Salome his wife: to Philip Cramer and Andrew Gerhart: for $936; 80 acres in Manheim Township, to be held by the grantee as tenants in common.

(3H, 130) April 28, 1824. Andrew GERHART and Catharine his wife: to Philip Cramer of Manheim Township: for $376: the Grantors' intereste in #G, 362.
