    William Ferguson, pension application 3543, approved October 12, 1899. Date of pension application July 18, 1899. He is 72 years of age and resided in Oakdale, Texas for 66 years. He is in very bad health and a farmer. He enlisted about June 1, 1863 with Company D, Cooks's Regiment, Heavy Artillery and served until the end of the war. He has two cows valued at $16, one year old yearling value $5, one calf worth $4, one horse worth $20, 10 head of hogs valued at $10. In the past two year he has sold one yearling for $5. V.H. Vickers, County Judge. W.T. Pulliam and J.O. Davidson witnesses. Dr. D.M. Cooper states that the applicant is in poor health with chronic colic and general nervous prostration. William Ferguson served with Milam County Guards, Infantry, 27th Brigade, General E.S.C. Robertson commander; Mount Vernon Grays, active Company, Infantry or Calvary, Titus County, 8th Brigade, TST was 5th Sergt., Company E, Volunteers, 11th Brigade, Captain Nathaniel B. Yelverton, Brigade Colonel L.W. Cooper commanding.

    William Ira Clark

    William Ira Clark, 93, of Hemphill died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 1998, at Twin Lakes Care Center in San Augustine.

    Born Aug. 4, 1904, in Clarktown community as a son of the late Monroe and Bessie (Williams) Clark, he was a lifelong resident of the area and was a retired pipefitter for Local #395. Clark was a member of East Mayfield Baptist Church and Littleton Fowler Masonic Lodge #305.

    Survivors: wife, Lexie Clark of Hemphill; a son, Terrel Clark of Hemphill; daughters, Oweda Boyd of Nacogdoches and Caroline Womack of Hemphill; nine grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one great-great granchild.

    Funeral services were held Feb. 21 at the chapel of Starr Funeral Home Inc. in Hemphill with Bro. Homer Williams, Bro. W. Clarence Howell, and Bro. W. P. Murchinson officiating. Interment followed at Fairmount Cemetery in Fairmount.

    Eula Smith King, 90, died Thursday, Nov. 27, 1997 in Houston.

    She was born Aug. 10. 1907, in Hemphill.

    Survivors: a son, Ronald S. King and wife, Marianna; a daughter, Alicia Hammock, grandchildren, Ronda Tisdale, Ronald King, Jr., Anthony King, Brian King, Kevin King, and Jeffifer Avila; and eight great-granchildren.

    Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the chapel of Aldine Funeral Home in Houston.

    Graveside rites and interment were ehld at 1 p.m. Monday at the Hemphill City Cemetery in Hemphill.

    Emmie Beauchamp

    Funeral services for Emmie Chambless Beauchamp, 86, of Hemphill were held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the chapel of Starr Funeral Home Inc. in Hemphill with Bro. John C. Dowden officiating. Interment followed at Yellowpine Cemetery in Yellowpine.

    Born May 1, 1098, in Fairdale as a daughter of the late William R. and Rilla Mae McDaniel, she was a longtime resident of Sabine County. She was a homemaker and a member of Hemphill's First United Methodist Church.

    Survivors: a daughter, Billie Branson of Beaumont; a son Robert Chambless of Battle Mountain, Nevada; two sisters, Vera Smith and Dearian Love McDaniel, both of Hemphill; a brother, W. R. McDaniel of Jasper; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

    Nephews will be pallbearers.

    He is preceded in death by his wife, Rachel Hamlet McDaniel, parents, William McDaniel and Rilla Martin McDaniel, brothers, Thorton, Leon and Albert McDaniel and sisters, Vera Smith, Emmie Chambless and Dearian McDaniel. He is survived by son, W. H. and wife, Fran of Haughton, La., son, Ray and wife, Ann of Carthage,Tx and daughter, Pat Brent and husband, Bob of New Braunfels, Tx., grandsons, Gary Westbrook, Phil Westbrook, Alan McDaniel, Brian McDaniel and Mike McDaniel, 1 granddaughter, Kim Housley and 15 great grandchildren.

    Dearian Love McDaniel, 87, of Hemphill died at 12:58 a.m. Thursday, April 17, 2003, at Hemphill Care Center. She was born Sept. 22, 1915, in Newton County and had lived in the Hemphill area several years. Mrs. McDaniel was a member of the Methodist Church. Survivors: husband, Nolan Ernest McDaniel of Hemphill; step-sons, Weldon McDaniel of Hemphill and James David McDaniel of Yellowpine; step-daughters, Margie Nell MILLER of Brookeland and Belinda Lee McDaniel of Silsbee; a brother W.R.     Beatrice Rogers Weaver, 96, of Hemphill and a forty-five year resident of Lumberton passed from this life to meet her Savior on Tuesday January 17, 2017 in Hemphill, Texas.

    Beatrice was born on September 3, 1920 in Sabine County, Texas to the late Miles Watson McDaniel and Ola McDaniel. She was preceded in death by her first husband; Coy Rogers, her daughter; Wanda Faye Harvill, her second husband; Houston Weaver, two brothers; Gay McDaniel, Wayne McDaniel, three sisters; Winnie Smith, Gladys Willis, and Mildred Hooks.

    She is survived by her son; Robbie Coy Rogers, step-children, Houston Weaver, Jr., Donald Weaver, Carol Nichols, Linda Ross, grandchildren; Angie Harvill, Ashley Fiello, Justin Rogers, and several great grandchildren along with numerous nieces and nephews.

    She enjoyed crocheting, playing dominoes, and traveling. Beatrice was a faithful, longtime and founding member of Crestwood Baptist Church in Lumberton, Texas and in 2010 upon her move to Hemphill, Texas she became a member of the First Baptist Church.

    Visitation will be held on Saturday January 21, 2017 from 2:00 p.m. until the Celebration of Life service at 3:00 p.m. at the Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Beaumont.

    In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Hemphill Care Center P.O. Box 1527, 2000 Highway 83 West, Hemphill, Texas, 75948 in honor of Mrs. Weaver.

She was formerly a resident of Crockett, Texas, where she belonged to the First United Methodist Church and worked as an office clerk in the human resources insurance department.

    Mrs. Hooks is survived by her husband Farrel S. Hooks of Hemphill, her sister Beatrice Weaver of Hemphill, numerous nieces and nephews, grand nieces and nephews, and great grand nieces and nephews.

    Graveside services will be held at 2:00PM, Friday, October 10, 2014, in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Six Mile Community, Hemphill, Texas.

    Willie Lee McDaniel

    Willie Lee McDaniel, 85, of Kirbyville, died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002 at a Jasper Hospital. He was a native of Hemphill and had lived in Kirbyville for 57 years. McDaniel, a World War II veteran of the Army Signal Corps, was a retired merchant and painting contractor. Survivors: wife, Jean McDaniel of Kirbyville; daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Leonard HORN of Jasper, Diane KOLE of Houston, and Kathy and Jimmy DAWSON of Tyler; brothers, J.D.     Carrol Martin McDaniel, 76, of Kirbyville died Monday, July 10, 2006, at a Beaumont Hospital. McDaniel was a native of Sabinetown and had lived in Kirbyville several years. He was retired from Texaco as a pipefitter and was a Korean War veteran of the U.S. Army.     Duvergn Smith Cordray

    Duvergn Smith Cordray, 92, of Hemphill died Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2007, at Hemphill Care Center in Hemphill. Mrs. Cordray was born Sept. 20, 1914, in Sabine County and was a lifelong resident of the county. She was the owner and operator of Cordray's Grocery for 45 years. She enjoyed singing in the choir, working in the yard with her flowers, and visiting her friends and the sick. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Hemphill. She was preceded in death by her parents, E.B. (Ebb) and Lula P. (Ferguson) SMITH; husband, Joe CORDRAY, SR.; son Joe Cordray, Jr.; brothers, Alfred SMITH and Shine (Dalton) SMITH; and sisters, Susie McDANIEL and Velma RASH. Survivors: daughter, Betty Cordray BOYD and husband Carlos BOYD of Pineland; grandchildren, Tina CROCKER of Owasso, Oklahoma, and Brian BOYD of Lufkin; and great-grandchildren, Clay CROCKER and Colton CROCKER, both of Owasso. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 1, at the chapel of Starr Funeral Home Inc. in Hemphill with Bro. I.W. Ferguson and Bro. T.A. Lane officiating.     Sunday marked the 50th anniversary of the end of the Korean War. A cease fire was called for 10 p.m. at July 27, 1953. Local resident Nolan Ferguson remembers that day well. Ferguson was a corporal in the United States Army where he served as a cannoneer and truck driver during the war. He served with Service Battery, 12th Field Artillery Battalion, 2nd Infantry Division. Speaking of the cease fire, Ferguson said, "It was so quiet you could have heard a pin drop."

    Ferguson was discharged as a sergeant on Sept. 16, 1954. During his service he received the Korean Service Medal with one Bronze Star, a UN Service Medal, a National Defense Service Medal and a ROK Pres Unit Citiation.

    Ferguson is married to Frances (STRICKLAND). The couple has been married for 47 years. They have two children who are both math teachers: Tommy FERGUSON and his wife Jennifer of Silsbee, and Wendi MOODY and her husband Chris of Corsicana.

    The January 8, 2008 issue of the Sabine County Reporter noted that Nolan Ferguson had been presented with a service award from his employer, Chance Construction Co. of Hemphill.

    Obituary

    Nolan Ferguson, 91, of Hemphill, Texas passed away Monday, November 28, 2022 at his residence.
    Nolan was born September 20, 1931 in Sabinetown, Texas as the oldest of four children to William Augustus Ferguson and Ollie Burleson Ferguson. He was a lifetime resident of Sabine County, a place he dearly loved, and a graduate of Hemphill High School. He served his country as a United States Army Sergeant in the Korean War and later worked as a engineering technician for the U. S Forest Service for many years before retiring. His true calling was that of a farmer and rancher. He raised horses and cattle for many years and served as a 4-H Leader for the youth of Sabine County. He judged many horse shows in his life and competed in rodeos as a calf-roper. He also liked to deer hunt back when you could run dogs.

    He was a well-loved member of his community and a loving husband to his wife, Frances, for 63 years before her death in 2019. He was a great father and grandfather who loved his family and his Blue Bell Ice Cream. He made his profession of faith and was baptized in his early 60's. He became a member of First Baptist Church in Hemphill as well as a member of Littleton-Fowler Masonic Lodge 305 and a lifetime member of the V.F.W.

    Nolan is survived by his son Tommy Ferguson and wife, Jennifer, of Silsbee; daughter, Wendi Moody and husband, Christopher, of Sour Lake; and five grandchildren, Whitney, Walter, Trinity, Audrey and William.

    Funeral services will begin at 2:00 p.m. Friday, December 2, 2022 in Starr Funeral Home Chapel, 510 Starr Street, Hemphill, Texas with Dr. Christopher Moody and Dillon Ray Ferguson officiating.

    Visitation will be held prior to service from 12:00 p.m. until service time.

    Burial will follow services in Harpers Chapel Cemetery with Walter Ferguson, William Ferguson, Jared Ferguson, Steven Ferguson, Bruce Ferguson and David Logan serving as pallbearers. Military Honors will be provided by the Sabine County Honor Guard.

Dillon worked for Temple Inland in Pineland and went to work for Temple Inland in Evadale in 1962. He retired in December, 1995. Mr. Ferguson was a faithful member of Calvary Apostolic Church in Evadale. He was a US Army veteran, serving in Europe from October 1954 until October 1957. Mr. Ferguson is preceded in death by his father William 'Bill' Augusta Ferguson, mother Ollie Burleson Ferguson and brother Deas Ferguson. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Betty Inez Jones Ferguson; daughter Betty Jane Immel and husband Jimmie of Silsbee; son Dillon Ray Ferguson and wife Pam of Evadale and daughter Debbie Hall of Evadale. He is also survived by brother Nolan Ferguson and wife Frances of Hemphill; sister Carolyn Nemec and husband Leonard of Houston and sister-in-law Maxine Ferguson of Beaumont; eleven grandchildren, twenty five great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews, whom he loved.

    Graveside services for Verna Marie Ebarb, 79, were held in the Springhill Cemetery on Wednesday, January 7, 2009. She died January 4, 2009, in her home in Hemphill, after an illness.

    She was born October 30, 1929, in Sabine County and has lived her all her life. Mrs. Ebarb was a member of the East Mayfield Missionary Baptist Church. She worked privately as a caregiver.

    She is survived by her sons: Johnny Ebarb of Hemphill, Joe David Ebarb of Pineland, and Ivy C. Norton of Milton, FL. Four daughters, Linda M. Blanton of Lufkin, Lucy Bolt of Hemphill, Sandra Ellis of Palestine, and Sharon Christian of Pineland. One brother Robert Ferguson of Hemphill, sisters; Patsy Canzoneri of DuPree, WS, Frances Milner of Sugarland, and Dorthy Welch of Houston; twelve grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren.

    She was preceded in death by her brother, Rev. I.W. "Buckshot" Ferguson.

    Contributions to the Springhill Cemetery Fund, First State Bank, Hemphill, TX 75948, would be appreciated by the family.

She then moved to Louisiana to work at Fort Polk and there she met her husband, Joe Canzoneri. They were married for over 50 years until Joe passed away in 2016.

    Pat is survived by her sister Frances Milner, her two daughters, Elizabeth (Cole) Runge and Nicole (Brett Crozier) Canzoneri, and four grandchildren: Cole, Sam, Noah, and Eli. Pat was devoted to her family and will be missed by all.

    Eva Dell Lunsford, 79, of Orange, Texas, passed away on December 22, 2022, at her home in Orange, Texas.

    Born in "Fergie Hill" outside of Hemphill, Texas, on December 3, 1943, Eva was the daughter of Willie Samuel Ferguson and Nettie Irene Rogers Ferguson. As the second oldest of 9 children, she was like a parent to her youngest siblings. Passionate about education, Eva was single-minded in her pursuit of the highest grades possible and her goal to attend nursing school in Beaumont. Her hard work paid off, and Eva graduated Valedictorian of her high school and her college where she co-edited the yearbook and developed lifelong friendships.

    Eva met her first husband, Earl Gordy, in Beaumont while students at Lamar. She followed his dreams to Alaska where she worked as a registered nurse, accumulating many adventurous stories including helping Eskimo women deliver their babies. Although she loved Alaska very much, she deeply missed her east Texas roots. With her growing family, they returned to Texas where her husband found work as a CPA with the Rogers Brothers in Beaumont. After purchasing property in the community of Rosevine, they began their dream of building a log cabin guided by the Foxfire series and inspired by Henry David Thoreau. Eva continued her work as an RN in Nacogdoches while raising her family and living a wonderful life off the land until Earl's early death due to cancer.

    Her second husband, Donald, entered her life in a Cessna 182 Skylane and quite literally swept her off her feet. Having known each other's families through the church of Christ, he began picking her up for dates from the Pineland airport and courting her throughout southeast Texas. After a move to Orangefield, a new life of travel and adventures would begin. From flying over the football field during kickoff to flying to vacation destinations, Eva's new life was full of opportunity and promise. She continued her work as an RN and remained deeply involved in church and her children's lives. As a parent ? and especially as a grandparent ? Eva was always the adult who played on the floor with the children, chased them around the house, made big messes in the kitchen, hid in the closet with them, and showered them with love and laughter. For one grandchild in particular, "Gramma Day" was the highlight of the week where he loved to get "lost' in the sheets while "helping" to make the beds.

    Eva was cherished by all who knew her for her kindness, her faithfulness, her intelligence, her silliness, and her love of serving others. She leaves behind an adoring husband and a doting family of children, grandchildren, and many nieces & nephews whom she loved like her own. Although Alzheimer's ravaged her bright mind, she still found ways to acknowledge their presence as they whispered words of love, stroked her hair, and held her hand during her final days.

    Eva was preceded in death by parents, Willie and Nettie Ferguson; her brothers, Glenn Ferguson and Ronnie Ferguson; her sisters, Lorraine Waetjen and Kathy Chance; and her first husband, Earl H. Gordy.

    She is survived by her loving husband, Donald Lunsford; her daughter, Dana Gordy Bundy; her sons, Aaron Gordy and wife Mary Jo Caruthers, and Benjamin Gordy; her grandchildren, Gray Bundy, Dane Bundy, Rene Gordy, Lily Gordy, Abigail Genova, Noah Genova, and Olivia Gordy; her brothers, Gaylon Ferguson, Donald Paul Ferguson,

    Johnny Ferguson, and Bertz Ferguson; and numerous other loving friends and family.

He opened Piney Woods Nursery in Pineland in 1978 and there he kept his customers supplied with all their gardening and landscaping needs until his retirement in 2016. He moved to Mount View, Arkansas after retiring and returned to Pineland in 2021.

    He was a longtime member of Pineland Church of Christ. He truly loved gardening, taking particular interest in his blueberries and his roses.

    Gaylon was preceded in death by his parents, Willie and Nettie Ferguson; wife, Diana Jordan Ferguson; brothers, Glynn Ferguson and Ronny Jay Ferguson; and sisters, Lorene Waetjen, Katherine Chance and Eva Gordy Lunsford.

    He is survived by his brothers, Donald Paul Ferguson of Livingston, Johnny Ray Ferguson of Lake Jackson, and Bertz Ferguson of Pineland; stepsons, Harrison Tyler Hodges of Yellville, AR and Richard Adam Hodges of Beaumont; four step grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
