Notes:

He moved to Hemphill after the Civil War, and he and J.H. Speights were in business together. Hampton operated a store and a saloon. His two-story home was located where Perry Brothers store now is. He owned the east half of the square. He came to Hemphill with all his wordly goods tied to a kerchief at the end of a stick across his shoulder, and died a wealthy man (White and Toole, p 80).

The first family member to settle in Saing County, (he) was one of the earliest volunteers in "Cotton's Southrons' First Unit, Hood's Brigade. This brigade was one of the hardest fighting, most famous units in the Civil War. In his 2002 book, THE MYSTERY OF LADY BOUNTIFUL, Bob Bowman writes that a $5,000 bond was posted for Lillian Knox, accuses of murdering her husband, timber magnate Hiram Knox. The bond was singed by five Hemphill men, including Dr. Tom ARNOLD, a witness for the prosecution. The other four were E. P PADGETT, a lawyer; J.P. (sic) FULLER, who owned a drug store; L.E. PRATT, a merchant; and John W. MINTON, attorney for the Know family. Another press report listed S.R. Williams as surety. (Bowman, p. 105).

Wilma Pratt Logan, 101, of Hemphill died Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2006, at Hemphill Care Center. She was born April 30, 1905, as a daughter of the late Sally (Collier) and George Edward PRATT. She is survived by a niece and nephew. Graveside rites were held Saturday at Hemphill City Cemetery with Bro. Gary Leinhart officiating. Services were under the direction of Starr Funeral Home Inc. in Hemphill.

Final Rites for Mrs. Hubley, 72 Held Friday

Funeral services for Mrs. Olivia Pratt Hubley, 72, of Hemphill, who died Thursday at 7:15 a.m. in her home after a long illness, was held at 3 p.m. Friday in the Starr Funeral Home Chapel. She was a native of Alabama, moving to Sabine county with her parents in 1890. She and her husband returned to Hemphill about three months ago from Jacksonville, Texas, where they had resided for several years. The Rev. Clarence Howell, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Hemphill, officiated, assisted by the Rev. Lovis Dunn, pastor of the East Mayfield Baptist Church of Hemphill, and the Rev. Louis W. Pratt, of Garland. Burial was under the direction of Starr Funeral Home of Hemphill. Survivors include her husband, L. F. Hubley of Hemphill; one daughter, Mrs. Jeannie Barnes of Pasadena, Texas; three sisters, Mrs. Edward Harper, Mrs. W. E. OZRO LEE PRATT

Ozro Lee Pratt, 90, of Geneva died at 7 p.m., Tuesday, December 2, 2003, at Memorial Medical Center in San Augustine. He was born December 29, 1912, in Sabine County as a son of the late Mary Elizabeth (Cooper) and Hampton Lee Pratt and was a lifelong resident of Sabine County. Pratt was a retired truck driver for Holly Farms and a member of Geneva Baptist Church. Survivors: daughters and sons-in-law, Ann and J.C. CLICK of Geneva and Gloria and Robert McELROY of Elkhart; seven grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Francis Pratt, who died November 23, 2003. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, December 5, 2003 at the chapel of Starr Funeral Home, Inc. in Hemphill with Bro. Eddis SMITH and Bro. Buddy PRATT officiating. Interment followed at Rosevine Cemetery.

A nearly identical obituary was published in the December 10, 2003 Sabine County Reporter. The only added fact was that Orzo and Francis also had four great-great grandchildren.
