1787 - 1835 (42 years)
Generation: 1
1. | Archibald McLemore was born on 11 Mar 1787 in North Carolina; died between 1830 and 1835 in Monroe County, Tennessee. Notes:
A photo of a double tombstone for Archibald and Sarah Plumlee can be seen on FindAGrave, in the Click Cemetery, Madisonville, Monroe, Tennessee. However, it appears to be a comtemporary marker, probably placed sometime well after their deaths. Additionally, the dates of birth and death, at least for Archibald, are not correct. A photo of this marker can be seen here:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=pv&GRid=38295337&PIpi=18611681
The dates on this headstone for Archibald are listed as 1767-1829.
1767 is the approximate date of birth of another Archibald McLemore, the progenitor of the Sampson/Duplin line, and not the Archibald McLemore that lived in Knox County, Tennessee. A biography of a A. J. McLemore, a son of Archibald McLemore of Knox County, states that his father Archibald was born "on March 11, 1787."
Additionally, it appears that Archibald was alive in 1829, most likely dying in the mid 1830's.
Tom Heseltine, who is descended from Archibald McLEMORE and Sarah PLUMLEY of Knox Co emailed, in June, 2009 that "Most available information, including the 1917 Dade Co MO book, the 1889 Goodspeed book, and the obituary of Archibald McLEMORE jr., all state that Archibald McLEMORE and wife Sarah PLUMLEY died ca 1824/1825. This is curious since their son Wesley was born 1827 and the youngest son Andrew Jackson was born 1828. And, the 1830 Knox Co TN census lists one Archibald McLEMORE with the correct number of young sons and a female the correct age to be his wife. I strongly suspect that the family story about their deaths has been miscalculated by at least 5 years and, most probably, 10 years."
Eddie Maynard agrees with Tom, but has a more specific estimate of the date of death, putting it about 1832: "If you combine the two Bios for his sons Andrew Jackson and for Archibald Jr, it sort of make sense for Archibald Sr's death date. Since Andrew knew his father's birth date, he must have had a Bible or source to have known the complete date....very often people would just say the year or he was about 45 when he died. BUT, since Andrew knew the complete date, I think he really did know. Next, I do think that Archibald Jr knew the age of his father's death of 45. So, if you take the date of 1787 and add 45...Archibald Sr died in 1832...which does make more sense. Archibald Jr says his father died in 1825 which we know had to be wrong since Andrew was born in 1829 and Archibald is on the 1830 Monroe County, TN census. Also, Archibald Jr says that he went to live with his brother Abram as a young man and in 1827 was part of the "posse" to gather the Cherokee for the Trail of Tears....it couldn't be 1827, it was 1837-38. Now, if Archibald J r(B.1817) is a young man when he went to live with his brother...he would have been - 20 at that time he went on the "posse". If his father died in 1832, Archibald Jr would have been only 15 and probably did live with his brother Abram. Archibald Sr couldn't have lived much later than 1832 because then Archibald Jr would have been an adult and probably wouldn't have needed to live with his brother since the children inherited land in Monroe."

6. | Archibald McLemore, Jr. (1.Archibald1) was born on 17 Jun 1817 in Knox County, Tennessee; died on 29 Jan 1905 in Greenfield, Dade County, Missouri. Notes:
This is a biography is transcribed from "HISTORY OF HICKORY, POLK, CEDAR, DADE AND BARTON COUNTIES, MISSOURI, 1889"; Published by Goodspeed, and can be found at the following website:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~modade/bio_p4.htm
Archibald McLemore, farmer, and an old citizen of Center Township, five miles northeast of Greenfield, is a native of Knox County, Tenn., having been born in 1817. His father was Archibald McLemore, of North Carolina, who went to Knox County, Tenn., when a young man, where he married Sarah Plumley. In 1820 they removed to Monroe County, where he died in 1825, at about at he age of forty-five, his wife dying in 1824. She was the mother of eleven children, the subject of this sketch being the seventh, who, after his parents' death, lived with his brother, Abram, working for him until he was nearly grown. In 1827 he assisted the governor to remove the Cherokees to their reservation in Indian Territory. September 15, 1842, he married Miss Mollie Brown, who was born in South Carolina, in 1817, the daughter of Robert and Jennie (Dennis) Brown, who moved to Monroe County, Tenn., about 1820. In 1842 Mr. McLemore came to Dade County, Mo., and settled two miles from Greenville, on the farm which is now owned by John Higgin. He remained two years, when, owing to ill health, he returned to Tennessee, and, in 1849, again came to Dade County, settling on the farm which he now owns, comprising about 265 acres. Their family consisted of six children: Mary, who died in 1886, aged forty-three; Robert, a merchant at Everton; Sarah Ann, wife of James McConnell; William, merchant at Everton; Paulina, wife of George Wilson, merchant at Everton. Mr. McLemore is a highly respected citizen; in politics he is a Republican, casting his first vote for Van Buren in 1840, being a Democrat before the war. He and his wife belong to the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
Obituary of Archibald McLemore from the Greenfield Vadette 5 FEB 1905.
Archibald McLemore
"Born in 1817, Mr. McLemore died at the home of his son Wm. Y. McLemore in this city Sunday, Jan. 29th, 1905, in the 88th year of his age.
Mr. McLemore was born in Knox County, Tennessee, in 1817. His Father, Archibald, a native of North Carolina, died in 1825. His Mother, a native of South Carolina, whose maiden name was Plumley, died in 1824, so that the death of his Father left him an orphan at the age of eight years. Until fifteen years of age, he lived with an older brother, when he and another brother walked 300 miles to the gold mines of Northern Georgia, and began life for themselves. He remained but a short time, going thence to Tennessee, where he engaged in farming until 1837, when at the age of 17, he enlisted in the Tennessee Militia, and was engaged with the troops in the removal of the Cherokee Indians to their reservation in the territory.
In 1842, he was married to Mollie Brown, born in South Carolina in 1817. Sometime after their marriage, they decided to settle in Southwest Missouri. He had a large wagon constructed and came through the swamps of Southeast Missouri, an over Ozarks to Springfield. They subsisted principally on game killed by Mr. McLemore while en route. They stopped near Springfield, which was then but a small settlement, but a short time. Being unsatisfied with the conditions there, they pushed on through the wilderness, stopping near Hoyt's Mill, on Turnback, even two and one-half miles East of Greenfield, in 1842. Here, he began the construction of a cabin, and the preparation of a tract of land for farming, but because of sickness of himself and his wife, which lasted a year, they moved to the mountain districts of East Tennessee.
In 1849 he returned to Missouri and located on the Sac River, about five miles Northeast of Greenfield. By unremitting toil, he made enough rails to enclose his tract of land, entered it for a homestead, and has since resided there, except during the brief period recently in which he made his home with his son, Wm. Y. McLemore, our County Recorder, in this city.
The funeral discourse was preached by Rev. J. E. Johnston, local pastor at the C. P. Church Monday afternoon, from where the burial took place.
Another good man and good citizen has gone to his reward.
He was a consistent Christian gentleman, blessed with as many friends as usually fall to the lot of any man. Cursed with as few enemies as any man of conviction could be. What a pity the world is not full of such."

Biographical Sketch of A. J. McLemore, Walnut Grove Township, Greene County, Missouri
From "History of Greene County, Missouri," St. Louis: Western
Historical Company, 1883.
A. J. McLemore was born in Monroe County, East Tennessee, September 10,
1829. His father, Mr. A. McLemore, was a native of North Carolina,
born March 11, 1787. He died in Tennessee. The subject of this sketch
was the youngest child of his parents, there being nine older than he.
When fifteen years old, he came to Greene County, Mo., and after a
short stay at Springfield, went to Dade County. In 1851, he, with other
adventurers, took the gold fever and went to California. Here he re-
mained some five years, and accumulated a considerable sum of money.
Returning to Dade County, Mo., in 1857, he speculated in live stock a
short time, but returned to California in the spring of 1857, accomp-
anied by his wife (Dialtha Alexander) to whom he had been married in
February 5, 1857. They drove a large herd of stock through to the West
on which Mr. McLemore realized handsomely. They located in Eldorado
County on a stock ranch, remaining eighteen months. Returning to Miss-
ouri, Mr. McLemore bought the old Alexander homestead near Ozark, on
which he remained till the civil war. He then sold out and made a trip
to Texas, but returned almost immediately, and located again just north
of Ozark, where he remained till he moved to where he now lives, near
Walnut Grove. He has one of the best improved farms in the northwest
part of Greene County, his residence being elegant and well located.
Seven children have been born to Mr. McLemore and wife, six of whom,
Ida F., John S., Detroit M., Maggie M., Greeley N. and Myrtle O., are
still living. The deceased child was their first born, a son named
Cornelius A., born June 23, 1859 and died March 23, 1863.

21. | James Luther McLemore (3.John2, 1.Archibald1) was born about 1856 in Missouri; and died. Notes:
Tom Heseltine writes that Luther, along with his wife and a small son, died in a Blizzard in Colorado in 1880.
Holly Bird, however, through DNA and other research, has established that James had two sons with his wife, Margaret Ilah Walker in Colorado. His sons were Oliver Walker (b. 24 May 1884 d. 1928) and Frederick Walker (b. 1886 d. 1900) who were known by their mother's surname. According his granddaughter, he abandoned his family and may have even faked his death in the blizzard in a Missouri newspaper.
She further indicated that he can be found in 1889 Federal Land Management records, and actually died sometime after that date.

William Y. McLemore, born in Dade County in 1852, son of Archibald and Mary (Brown) McLemore, is the senior member of the firm of McLemore Brothers, general merchants and dealers in farm implements, live stock, etc., established in July, 1884. The value of their sales annually is about $30,000 the value of the stock being about $8,000. The subject of this sketch, the fourth child of a family of six, three sons and three daughters, was raised on the farm, received a common school education, and remained at home till 1878, when he entered the mercantile business at Crossroads with G. W. Wilson, where they remained in business till the railroad was built, at which time they removed to Everton and built the first store building, which was in the woods. The firm continued till 1882, in September, when Mr. McLemore retired, and in 1884 established the present firm with his brothers, Robert F. and Jasper M. This firm is one of the strongest mercantile firms in Dade County, They began with nothing, are thorough-going and live business men, and upright citizens. In 1881 William Y. married Serepta C., daughter of Calvin and Acenith Wheeler, formerly of East Tennessee, but early settlers of Dade County, where Mrs. McLemore was born, and where the father died. The mother died in Kansas. Mr. Wheeler was a merchant and manufacturer. Our subject has had three children, two of whom are living. In politics he is a Republican, voting for Hayes in 1876. He and wife are Presbyterians.
His death certificate, issued by the State of Missouri, lists his usual occupation as a Banker, and shows him to be the son of Archibald McLemore and Mary Brown of Tennessee. The informant was Clarence McLemore of Everton, MO. (Copy courtesy of Paul Williams).

Could this be the E. H. McLemore, born May 1870 in Tennessee, and married 9 years, who was working as a Hotel Clerk Ward 2 of Chattanooga at the time of the 1900 Federal census? He was shown as married for 9 years to 30 year old Olivine, born in France, as were her parents. She was shown as emigrating in 1880, and the mother of no children. Nor were any children listed with them in the boarding home where they were residing.
If this is Elbert Henderson McLemore, then Olivine died or they were otherwise separated shortly after the 1900 census (taken 29 Jun 1900), as by April 1910, he was shown as married (second? [maybe third?]) to the Mary Bell Dyer, said to be the widow of John Marcus Kennedy. They were living in Fisher County, Texas, and said to have been married 8 years. Elbert and Bell also had two older children with him, Vola age 14 and Ola C, age 12...who would have been born ca 1896 and 1898. They appear to have been born in Belle during her previous marriage.

Shot in the Back
A. L. McLemore Assassinated While Setting Out Fruit Trees
Haskell, Okla., Marcy 17--At Stone Bluff, near here, A. L. McLemore was shot in the back while setting out fruit trees on his farm. Another bullet hold in his head and powder marks indicates that the assassin fired into the mans' skull at close range after he had been shot from behind. A negro tenant with whom McLemore had been having trouble over a settlement for rent is suspected and deputy Joe Depew with blood hounds left here for the scene of the crime.
The dead man was wealthy and prominent.

99. | Clyde G. McLemore (25.William3, 6.Archibald2, 1.Archibald1) was born on 29 Mar 1883 in Everton, Dade County, Missouri; died on 4 Dec 1960 in Los Angeles County, California; was buried in Greenfield Cemetery, Greenfield, Dade County, Missouri. Notes:
Biography below from Volume III of "Montana, Its Story and Biography: A History of Aboriginal and Territorial Montan and Three Decades of Statehood" Under the Editorial Supervision of Tom Stout, The American Historical Society, Chicago and New York, 1921, pps. 1365 and 1366 (courtesy of Melba Gene McLemore):
Clyde McLemore, junion member of the firm of Booth and McLemore of Baker, is an able lawyer, a strong debator and brillant orator. Possessed of a strong and commanding mind, unusual ability and admirable personal quailities, he has become a well-known figure of the Montana bar, rendering conspicuous service in his able conduct of the cases entrursted to him, discharging what he believes to be his duty with independence and without bias. He will never permit fear of political punishment or hope of reward to change his attitude on a matter of public concern, and is recognized as one of the forceful ment of his profession.
Clyde McLemore was born near Everton, Dade County, Missouri, on March 29, 1883, a son of William Y. and grandson of Archibald McLemore. The McLemore family came originally from Scotland through the north of Irelan to the United States during the Colonial period of this country's history, settlement being made first in North Carolina and later in Tennessee. During 1849, Archibald McLemore with several of his brothers left Tennessee for Missouri, and there became interested in farming. When the war broke out between the states the McLemore brothers adhered to the Union, and continued to support it, several of them entering the army in its defense. Archibald McLemore married Mary Brown, and they had five children.
William Y. McLemore was born in Missouri, where he spent his life, being engaged in merchandising. He married Claranette Wheeler, a daughter of Calvin and Asenith (Carlock) Wheeler. Mrs. McLemore was born in Dade County, Missouri, and she and her husband became the parents of the following children: Clyde, whose name heads this review; Clarence, who is a banker of Everton, Missouri; Forest, who is wife of Boyd Campbell, of Warner, Oklahoma; Ray, who served in the Eighty-ninth Division during the Great war, is now engaged in merchandising at Everton, Missouri; Carl, who is also a resident of Everton; and Dewey and Gretta, who are both residents of Everton.
Growing up in a country town, Clyde McLemore attended the village schools, the Everton High School and the academic department of Missouri State University, spending 18 months in the last-named institution. Following that he took a law course in the university, from which he graduated in 1911, with the degree of Doctor of Law. His fraternity work was done as a member of the Sigma Chi and Phi Delta Phi Greek letter societies. An athlete, he was a member of the university baseball team, with which he played for an entire season.
Having completed his legal training Mr. McLemore took the examinations at Guthrie, Oklahoma, and was admitted to practice before the Supreme County, and he was also admiited to the bar in Missouri. His first lawsuit was tried in Oklahoma, and it was an ordinary civil case. As long as he remained in Oklahoma he confied himself to a civil practice, being at Muskogee, that state, from 1911 to 1912, when he moved to Billings, Montana, there forming a partnership with E. E. Collins under the firm name of Collins and McLemore. For some years this was one of the strong legal firms of Billings, but then it dissolved and Mrs. McLemore became title examiner for the Bankers Loan & Mortgage Company of Billings, with which he remained until his retirement from that position in the early part of 1919 in order to locate permanently at Baker as an associate of Senator Booth. The first of Booth & McLemore was formed in May, 1919. In addition to his other work Mr. McLemore has contributed a number of articles to some ofhte leading law journals of the country. In his politics he has always been a republican and he cast his first presidential vote for Colonel Roosevelt in 1904, but has never taken an active part in the public affairs. For some years he has been a member of the Odd Fellows. Brought up ina strong Presbyterian home atmosphere he is naturally a member of that denomination.
On August 7, 1907, Mr. McLemore was united in marriage in his native county to Lucy Talbutt, a daughter of Mason and Clara (Kimber) Talbutt. Mrs. McLemore was born in Dade County, Missouri on March 28, 1888, and attended its public schools. Mr. and Mrs. McLemore have two children, Felicia, who was born in 1910; and Claranette, who was born in 1913.

127. | Edwin McLemore (43.Elbert3, 8.William2, 1.Archibald1) was born about 1921 in Texas; and died. Notes:
May have been born either to the wife named A???ine, born in Kentucky, whom Elbert was shown as married to at the time of the 1920 census, or the Clersie, to whom he was shown as married at the time of the 1930 census. It is most likely he was born to Clersie, however, as she was born in Tennessee and his mother was shown as being born in Tennessee.

128. | Eudora Mitchell (46.Alice3, 9.Mary2, 1.Archibald1) was born after 1886 in Arcola, Dade County, Missouri; and died. Notes:
The DAR reports that "problems have been discovered with at least one perviously verified paper" as they received a letter stating that the applicant was adopted, therefore the possibility exists that the lineage for this lineage may no longer meet the requirements for membership in the NSDAR. Eudora filed for membership in the DAR on April 8, 1933 in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

129. | John "Johnny" L. McLemore (51.Albert3, 10.Wesley2, 1.Archibald1) was born in Mar 1892 in Arthur, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory; and died. Notes:
Among the progressive and wide-awake young business men of Haskell is numbered John McLemore, a native son of Oklahoma, who has been an important factor in developing the oil fields of this section of the state and also has financial and real estate interests. He was born at Arthur, near Duncan, Oklahoma, March 9, 1892, of the marriage of Albert and Lizzie (Ligon) McLemore, the former a native of Dade county, Missouri, while the latter was born in Illinois. The father came to this state in territorial days, establishing his home near Duncan, in what was then known as Indian Territory, in 1888. There he followed agricultural pursuits until 1896, when he removed to Tahlequah, where he resided until March, 1898, and then made his way to Stonebluff, in which town he was assassinated on the 16th of March 1909. The mother passed away on the 31st of January 1912.
John McLemore was reared and educated at Bacone, three miles north of Muskogee, and was sixteen years of age at the time of his father's death. In partnership with his brother he continued to operate the home farm until March, 1916, when he came to Haskell. In this locality he also engaged in farming but subsequently disposed of all of his stock and on March 15, 1919, purchased an interest in the Creek Land & Loan Company, which had been organized by Frank B. Glascock and his two daughters, Nellie C. and Sarah S. He and B. K. Williams now own that concern. He also owns about six hundred acres of land, which he leases profitably. He is a stockholder and director of the Haskell National Bank, also has large oil holdings, and it was largely through his efforts that the Stonebluff oil field was developed. He displays marked business sagacity for one of his years and through the capable management of his interests has already advanced to a substantial point on the high-road to success.
At Muskogee, Oklahoma, on the 8th of November, 1912, Mr. McLemore was united in marriage to Miss Grace Hendrickson, a daughter of Andrew and Mary (Morgan) Hendrickson, natives of Kentucky and pioneers of Kansas and Oklahoma. Her father
was one of the early agriculturists of Okmulgee county and there passed away in April, 1914. Her mother still resides on the home farm. Mr. and Mrs. McLemore have become the parents of four children: Helen May, who was born August 19, 1913; Ernestine, born April 30, 1916; Margaret N., born April 27, 1918; and Hilda Jean, born October 23, 1920. Mrs. McLemore is a native of the Blue Grass state and was born May 6,1892.
Mr. McLemore is independent in his political views, reserving the right to vote according to the dictates of his judgment, and he has been called to public office, serving for two years as mayor of Haskell and giving to the city a businesslike and progressive administration. He attends the Christian church and fraternally is identified with the Elks lodge at Muskogee, of which he is a life member, and he is also a prominent Mason, belonging to the commandery and the Shrine at Muskogee, while in the consistory at McAlester he has taken the thirty-second degree. He is a young man who has not yet reached the zenith of his powers, but in the development of his talents he has established himself in a foremost position in business circles of Haskell, and judging by what he has already accomplished the future holds for him unlimited possibilities.
