Jan Kotas

Notes:

He was born to Martin or Mattias KOTAS. He emigrated from Bohemia in 1868, settling first in Chicago for two years. The family left Illinois in October, 1870, arriving at the homestead of his sister and brother-in-law, Katherine and John PLACEK, who lived in Section 12 of Big Blue Township in Saline County. John and sons Frank and Joseph walked to Fillmore County to claim homesteads, which they filed in Beatrice on October 17, 1870, at the same time filing their naturalization papers. They lived with bachelor homesteader Frank ZNAJEMSKY until their dugout was built on October 25, 1870. John received his patent on May 16, 1878. The first dugout school of District #44 was on the KOTAS homestead. John was also instrumental in getting a Catholic Church built on his land, serving in the puplit occasionally as their was not resident priest. He also helped establish Ceski Brati, a Catholic Cemetery. Later in life, John purchased addtional land from the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad, making it possible to give each of his 7 surviving children a farm. He and Barbara retired to Milligan. While repairing the roof of his home, he fell and was impaled on their picket fence. The funeral was conducted at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church and he was buried in Ceski Brati cemetery near his son. More than 100 buggies followed the hearse to the cemetery. He is buried under the name KOTTAS, even though his railroad documents and homestead documents were executed using KOTAS. His son, W.J. was administrator of his estate, so this may account for the change in spelling. (Milligan, p 356). He was the son of Martin KOTAS and Mary PIPLA. (Milligan, p 357).

Frank came to the US at the age of 18, living with his family in Chicago for two years before emigrating in 1870 to the home of his uncle and aunt, John and Katherina PLACEK in Saline County, He received a land patent for 80 acres on May 16, 1878. He farmed and also went into partnership with Vaclav BULEN in a hardware and implement business after the village of Milligan was platted.

Joseph Kotas claimed 80 acres as a homestead just east of his father and brother, W 1/2 NE 1/4 on March 6, 1871. He later cancelled this to purchase land from the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad in Glengary Township. After they completed the purchase of this land, they sold it to his parents. The first Catholic Church was built here. He bought and sold much land in the Milligan area, as well as operating several business. He served as Town Marshall as well (Milligan, p 359).

John was a farmer and businessman. In 1899, he built a lumber yard. The Catholic Church was built with lumber donated from his yard. In 1890, he built a saloon on Main Street, from land he bought from Vaclav and Mary KOTTAS. One Saturday night, as he was locking up, he heard a noise and as he turned around someone threw a bottle, hitting him in the face which cut his lip badly and broke out a tooth. He grew a moustache after this to cover the scar. He sold the saloon, and purchased land from Frank ANDREL in 1892 and returned to farming. They later returned to their home place which had been rented. John died following an accident in the hay field, which was caused by one of the frames for stacking hay coming unfastened and falling on him, hitting him across the shoulders and neck. He was a prominent citizen from the time the village of Milligan was organized, quiet of dispostion, and never meddling in other people's affairs, attending only to his business. Friends and neighbors stacked the grain and hay in the fields for the family. As the boys were too young to take over the farm, it was rented. (Milligan, p 357).

His first name was Waslove (Vaclav), however, he went by W.J. He was active in many business ventures, and was also active in community civics, serving on the Milligan town board, the Ceski Bratri Cemetery board, and in Democratic Party Politics. He also was a storekeeper and manager of the motion picture theatre at Central Hall. The family later moved to Montana. (Milligan, p. 369-370).

Anton attended rural school district #44 which was a dug out in the northwest corner of his father's homestead. Anton was making his home, as a young lad, in a dug out on the SE 1/4 of Section 3 when the blizzard of 1888 struck. Several of the big boys were sent to Anton's farmstead to weather out the storm. Anton valued education, wanting his sons to become professors. He sent them to town school after they completed elementary school. (Milligan, p 347).

Fred applied for a marriage license on January 28, 1893 to marry Mary KABLEY, daughter of Frank and Belinda Kabley, the ceremony to be a double wedding with his brother Anton, but this marriage never took place. A year later, he married Mary JANOUSEK. Fred purchased the west forty acres of his brother's Frank homestead in Glengary Township. In addition to farming, he had a stallion at stud, and owned a threshing rig, doing work for his neighbors and friends. He had a homestead near Chugwater, Wyoming as well that he intended to retire to, but instead retired to Milligan. He fell at age 83 while doing chores, and spent much time in the hospital over the next two years until his death. (Milligan, p 364-365).

Mrs. Johanna Matejka, daughter of John and Marie (Kotas) Zelenka, was born Mary 26, 1877, on a farm north of Milligan. She passed away at her home in Milligan Thursday, July 14, 1955, at the age of 78 years, 1 month, and 18 days.

She was united in marriage to Frank Matejka February 19, 1895, and to this union were born seven children, four sons, and three daughters.

They lived on a farm south of Burress for five years, then moved to Bluff City, Kas., for one year. They then moved to a farm town and one-half miles south of Milligan. In the spring of 1906, they moved to a farm northeast of Tobias, and from there in 1911, they moved to a farm three miles south of Milligan, where they farmed until 1932. That year they retired and moved to Tobias. In 1942, they moved back to the farm, but in 1945, they moved to Milligan.

She leaves to mourn her departure, her husband, Frank Matejka; three daughters, Mary, at home; Agnes, Ella (Mrs. William Krejdl); two sons, John and Edward, who was unable to be present, one sister Mary (Mrs. Anton Sladek); three brothers Albert, Frank, and John Zelenka; and two grandchildren, Marilyn Matejka and Betty Matejka (Mrs. Dean McMullen).

Her parents and three sisters Josephine, Ludmia, and Justina; and one brother, Emil, and two sons preceded her in death.

Charles was involved in business as a young lad. He helped his father in the meat market, later he clerked at the A.A. HAMOUZ General Merchandise Store. He sold cream separators, served as a substitute mail carrier, and drove the school hack wagon, where he became better acquainted with one of the passengers, Agnes KRISL, whom he later married. Charles clerked for C. J. CERVENY for a number of years before opening his own store in 1913. (Milligan, p 349).

A 1908 graduate of Milligan High School, he went on to attend Peru State Normal College and eventually the University of Nebraska. He was a school principal and also served as County Treasurer at Geneva, Nebraska. He served in the U.S. Army during World War i. He reached the rank of Sergeant First Class. After moving to Bird City, Kansas in 1925, he founded and edited the Bird City Times Newspaper. (Milligan, p 346-347).

He was drafted into the U.S. Army, and served through June 2, 1919. After his discharge, he helped Louis PLACEK farm. He was a Legionnaire, held several offices and helped build the first American Legion building, was a Lodge member and also belonged to the Knights of Pythias. He spent many hours, alongside Bessie, working in the Milligan Auditorium on dance night. Fishing was his pastime. After Bessie died, he bought a home in Milligan from Chas. HLADEK. He was honored as a life-time admiral into the Great Nebraska Navy in 1976. (Milligan, p 357-358)

Fred was born one mile north of Milligan, and resided and farmed there his entire life. He quit school after his father died to help his mother with the farm, which didn't seem to bother him a bit. He worked hard at farming, but was mischievious, always pulling pranks. During his early teen, business men would often ask idle boys to bring them back a bucket of "Pivo" from a local saloon. The bucket was an empty one that had held half a gallon of pancake syrup, and cost five to ten cents to fill with beer. Fred usually delivered each of his a few sips short, and was later seen sleeping it off on someone's Model T running board. In his adult life, he farmed and ran a threshing crew. Henry and Mae lived one year in Milligan, then moved to their farm six miles north of Milligan, here they farmed for fifteen years. They sold the farm in 1944 to Fred KOVANDA and moved to Milligan. There Henry worked for Edward "Swede" BULIN for one year and for Joe JICHA distributing beer for two years. He worked for the Auditorium doing custodian work for fifteen years, and last for the Kansas-Nebraska Gas Company until his retirement in 1966. (Milligan, p 354).

John graduated from Milligan High School in 1913, after which he farmed with his father. He was drafted into the U.S. Military on May 28, 1918, and was sent to Camp Dodge, Iowa for training. He was sent to France with Company D, 350 Infantry, 88th Division in August, 1918, from Long Island, New York, where he came down with influenza. He was sent to the front line the day the Armistice was signed, on November 11, 1918. He remained in France for police action, returning home in May, 1919. He was discharged in June. After marrying his sweetheart, Anna KOCA, the couple made their home on the Kotas family farm in Section 3 of Glengary Township. They moved to town in 1925. (Milligan, p 358-359).

MARY MATEJKA SERVICES HELD

Mary Matejka was born to Frank and Johanna (Zelenka) Matejka on November 4, 1897, at Burress, and passed away on February 13, 1984, at the Fillmore County Hospital in Geneva, at the age of 86 years, three months, and nine days of age. She was one of seven children in the family.

Mary attended Business Collage at York, and then attended L.P.N. Nursing School. She worked as a nurse at the Geneva Hospital when it first opened. Later she went to Gallup, NM, and worked in a hospital. She then returned to Geneva, where she was again employed at the hospital. Much of Mary's time was spent in caring for her parents. She enjoyed sewing an working in her garden.

She was a member of the Milligan Woman's Club, Pythian Sisters Friendship Temple 30, and the Milligan American Legion Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and one sister.

She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Bill (Ella) Kredjl; a sister-in-law, Mrs. John (Anna) Matejka; a niece, Mrs. Dean (Betty) McMullen; and other relatives and friends.

EDWARD MATEJKA FINAL RITES HELD IN MILLIGAN

Edward Matejka, son of Frank and Jennie (Zelenka) Matejka, was born on a farm near Burress, Neb., March 4, 1902. He departed this life at Strang, Neb., April 13, 1959, at the age of 57 years, 1 month, and 9 days.

He was reared and lived most of his life in the vicinity of Milligan, Neb. He worked on his fathers farm and later farmed this same farm for himself. He gave up farming in 1942, and entered the army. He was discharged a short time later, due to ill health, and went back to farming again. Due to his failing health, he was again compelled to quit farming. He was a hard worker, prior to the time of ill health. He was a veteran of World War II and a member of the American Legion.

He retired in 1949, and went to Arizona for a few years, then moved to Florida, where he resided for several years, the last six months being spent in the Veterans Bay Pines Hospital. He moved back to Nebraska less than two weeks prior to his death.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers. Edward is survived by three sisters, Mary Matejka, Agnes Matejka, Mrs. Ella Krejdl; one brother, John Matejka; two nieces, Miss Marilyn Matejka, and Mrs. Betty McMullen; and a large number of relatives and friends.

Mildred Rose Bures widow of John A. Bures and the daughter of Frank and Anna (Krejdl) Zelenka was born February 6, 1918, on a farm three miles northwest of Milligan, Nebraska. She attended county school at District #33 graduating from the eight grade. Also attended high school at Friend and Milligan, Nebraska. On September 22, 1936 she was united in marriage to John A. Bures and they farmed northwest of Burress, Nebraska for three years. Then they moved to a farm south of Grafton, Nebraska where they farmed for 38 years. Mildred's hobbies were reading, raising a garden, taking care of her flowers, and raising chickens. She loved to visiting with friends and she also loved polka music. In March of 1978 they retired from the farm and moved to Geneva. On September 7, 1978 John passed away. Mildred was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. She is survived by cousins and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 13, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at the Farmer & Son Funeral Home-Kotas Chapel in Milligan. Visitation beginning Monday at 1 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Kotas Chapel in Milligan. Burial in the Bohemian National Cemetery. Memorial to Geneva Senior Center

ARVADA, Colo. - Kara Kay Knutson, 29, of Arvada died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2011, at her home.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Alma (Neb.) United Methodist Church with the Rev. Lorri Kentner officiating. Private burial will be at Nelson (Neb.) Cemetery before the memorial service.

Visitation will be from noon to 7 p.m. Thursday at Banta-Torrey Funeral Home in Alma.

She was born Feb. 4, 1981, in Hastings, Neb., to Richard and Kay (Overturf) Knutson.

Survivors include her loving parents of Alma; sister, Beth Schweitzer and her husband, Jason, of Atlanta; nieces, Ava and Braylin Schweitzer of Atlanta; maternal grandmother, Ellen Overturf of Superior, Neb.; paternal grandfather, Meredith Knutson of Cambridge, Neb.; her aunts and uncles; eight cousins; and many, many friends.

She was the second daughter in her family. Kara was baptized as an infant in March 1981 at the United Methodist Church in Davenport, Neb. She was later confirmed at First United Methodist Church in Alma. Kara was active in the United Methodist Church Youth Group while in high school.

Kara attended Davenport Public School until 1990 when the family moved to Alma. Kara finished high school at Alma Public School as a member of the class of 1999. She attended Doane (Neb.) College and Colby (Kan.) Community College. She was a proud member of the Colby Community College Lady Trojan volleyball team.

She attended Southeast Community College in Lincoln, Neb., where she received her associate science degree in surgical technology in 2004 and her associate's degree in nursing in 2006.

Kara was employed as a home health nurse in Arvada. Kara loved being a nurse and working with all of her clients and their families. She was loved in return by all she cared for.

Kara was involved in the MidAmerica Boston Terrier Rescue Association. Through this organization she adopted her own Boston, Lily. Lily was the light of Kara's life. Kara also loved antiques and collectables.

During World War II, he was stationed in England, later being transferred to New Orleans This is where he met his wife, Yvonne. They returned to Milligan, where Adolph ran the Blackbird Grocery Store until 1975, when it was sold. After that, he continued to work in the store as a clerk. He also served on the Milligan School Board for eight years. He had three children: Kenneth, who lives in Lincoln and is a clinical social worker; Gerianne, who lives in Chicago and is an attorney and Carla, who lives and teaches in Vermont. Marie B. Vlasak

Marie B. Vlasak, 79, of Wilber, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2000 in Crete.

She was born August 5, 1920 on a farm north of Milligan, to John F. and Bessie R. (Masek) Kotas. She attended the Milligan Public School and graduated with the class of 1938. She helped on the family farm and did housework in the Crete area working at the Crete Mills and Fairmont Creamery. She married Charles Vlasak, Jr. on Sept.23, 1943, at the Saline County Courthouse in Wilber. In 1993, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

They made their home in Spokane, Wash. while Charles was in the service. Here she worked for Nabisco Biscuit Co. and Armour Meat Packing Plant. They moved back to Crete where she worked for Gooches and in 1946 moved to a farm north of Hallam. In 1957, they moved to a farm south of Wilber, retiring in 1989 and moved into Wilber.
She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Wilber for 38 years; a member of ZCBJ Lodge No. 3 inCrete, receiving her 50 year membership pin and was a V.A. Hospital volunteer for 888 hours.

She is survived by her brothers and sisters-in-law, Jim F. and Norma Kotas of Milligan, Donald and Velma Kotas of Lincoln; nieces and nephews and spouses; Aunt Mae Kotas of Milligan and great and great-great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles Vlasak, Jr., Oct. 24, 1996; infant brother, Johnny Kotas; sister and brother-in-law, Henrietta and Marion Arbuck.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Feb.10 at 2 p.m. at Zajicek Funeral Home in Wilber with the Rev. Paul Quackenbush officiating. Soloist Elmer Nemec accompanied by Bernice Zajicek.

Interment was at the Wilber Czech Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Wayne Arbuck, Dennis Kotas, Doug Kotas, Brad Kasl, Doug Hayek and Daryl Hayek.
Honorary pallbearers were Delbert Kotas, David Kotas, Gerald Splichal, Jon Eisenhauer, Darin Keller, Chuck Rains, Paul Essman and Mark Bors.

A 1943 graduate of Milligan High School, he was inducted into the Army on his 21st birthday. He was stationed at Fort Lewis in Washington, later being sent to Korea. He received his honorable discharge on May 7, 1947. After his term in the service, he helped his father farme and did custom trucking. He later went to work for JIm VOSOBA, the Standard Oil Agent. Jim is a volunteer fireman, rescue personnel, Community Club member, Hospital board member, and member of the V.F.W. Post #7102 and the Nebraska Petroleum Marketers association. In addition to this, he served on the school board, town board and was fire chief. He enjoys fishing and boating with his sons and grandsons. He and his brother, Don, inherited the 80-acre farm in Section One, Glengary Township, after their fathers death. (Milligan, p 355).

Obituary

Jim F. Kotas, the last member of the John F. & Bessie R. (Masek) Kotas family passed away on Monday, January 25, 2018 at the Fairview Manor in Fairmont, Nebraska at the age of 92 years, 8 months, and 2 days.

He was born on May 23, 1925 on the family farm north of Milligan. He attended Milligan Public School for 12 years and graduated with the class of 1943.

After graduation, he worked in Omaha at a meat packing plant. He was drafted into the Army on his 21st birthday at Fort Leonard Wood, Kansas. He spent time in Korea before receiving an honorable discharge on May 27, 1947 at Fort Lawton, Washington.

On May 11, 1949, he married Norma Most and to this union 4 sons were born: Dennis, David, Douglas, and Delbert.

On July 1, 1949, he began driving a fuel truck for Joe Vosoba. After Joe's retirement, he became a Standard Oil Agent. In 1958, the company went to Jobbers and it became Kotas Oil Company. He retired after nearly 40 years in the oil business.

After retirement, Jim enjoyed helping area farmers with grain harvest. He was also active in the community serving as the Chief on the Milligan Fire Department for many years. He also took EMT training in the early 1970's with Merle Buzek and Albert Michl, and they were the original members of the Milligan Rescue Squad serving for many years. He enjoyed serving with the Fire & Rescue and was dedicated to helping people in need. Jim also served on the Milligan School Board, the Fillmore County Hospital Board for 25 years, the Petroleum Marketers Board, and the Milligan Village Board.

In November of 2016, he was honored to receive a Quilt of Valor in recognition of his military service.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Johnny and Donald; sisters Marie and husband Chas Vlasek and Henrietta and husband Marion Arbuck; daughter-in-law Janet Kotas; grandson Jason Kotas; and brother-in-law Arnold Capek.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Norma of Milligan, Nebraska; sons Dennis & Lois Kotas, Douglas & Yvonne Kotas all of Milligan, Nebraska, David Kotas of Faucett, Missouri, and Delbert & Susan Kotas of Juniata, Nebraska; grandchildren T.J. and wife Abby Kotas of Lincoln, Nebraska, Gary Kotas of Humboldt, Nebraska, Katherine Kotas of Portsmouth, Virginia, Brittni Kotas of Milligan, Nebraska, Justin Kotas of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Emilie Kotas of Exeter, Nebraska; great grand daughter Kayla Brhle of Milford, Nebraska; great great granddaughter Brynlee Motley of Milford, Nebraska; sisters-in-law Lucille Capek of Milligan, Nebraska and Velma and John Kirby of Lincoln, Nebraska; cousin Reenlee Kotas of San Diego, California; and step grandchildren, step great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends.

A Funeral Service for Jim was held on Monday, January 29, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at the Milligan Auditorium in Milligan, Nebraska. Pastor Brian Kottas officiated the service. Karen Kohler accompanied Jon Scoville who sang "How Great Thou Art" and "Just A Closer Walk With Thee. "

Pallbearers for the service included T.J. Kottas, Gary Kotas, Justin Kotas, Wayne Arbuck, Gerald Capek, and Jon Eisenhauer. Interment was held in the Bohemian National Cemetery with Military Rites performed by the Milligan American Legion HSSK Post 240. Don graduated from Milligan High School in 1950, and served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955. After his marriage to Velma, they first lived in Milligan and later moved to Lincoln, were Don was employed by Salem Oil Company. They returned to Milligan after Don bought the Milligan Transfer from Joe KOCA in 1962. He sold his company in 1969. He worked as a tavern keeper at Suda's Tavern as well.

Don went to work for the Geneva Police Department in 1972, later running for Sheriff of Fillmore County. He was elected in November, 1978, and due to unfortunate circumstances, resigned in March 1979. He went to work for the Lincoln Correctional Center in June 1979.

Don has a pilot's license, and flying is his favorite pasttime. (Milligan, p 351).

Georgiann Josephine Vohnout was born to Fred Kotas and Josie Marie Kotas (Hanus) on September 19th, 1926 at Milligan, NE on the farm, and passed away on August 29th, 2017, at her home on the farm in Milligan, NE at the age of 90. She was an only child.

Georgiann was born and raised on her family farm ? a mile north of Milligan, NE. She went to school at Milligan Public and graduated in 1944. She worked at the Kottas Drug Store where she served enough ice cream that for a long period of time she couldn't stomach the stuff. Shortly after she worked at the Fairmont and Brunning Air Base where she was a secretary who welcomed and helped deploy the troops during World War II. While there she met the most handsome man she had ever seen and ended up marrying John J. Vohnout on June 12th, 1948.

On October 4th, 1965 they had their only son, John F. Vohnout. Instead of bringing flowers like the rest of the new dads, John brought Georgiann three stalks of milo to celebrate the birth of their son and his great crop that year!

Georgiann and her husband lived in Lincoln for a short time before they came back to her family farm when her father fell ill and that is where they made their lives for forty-four years, until John's death in 1998. Afterward, Georgiann fell ill with many medical issues but, despite her problems her family and friends helped keep her strong for another nineteen years.

During her life, Georgiann enjoyed the perks of farming with her husband, such as taking trips when and where they wanted to, going to many polka dances, and a "small" sideline of BINGO, casinos, and playing poker until the late hours of the morning with family. All the while never falling short of being a great mother, wife, and care taker of her mother. She was truly the least selfish person and always put the needs of her family and friends before her own. Her sense of humor and contagious laugh will so be missed by her son, his wife (the daughter that Georgiann always wanted but never had) and their three daughters.

Georgiann was preceded in death by, Fred and Josie Kotas, father and mother, John J. Vohnout, husband all of Milligan, NE.

She is survived by, John and Christine Vohnout, son and daughter-in-law of Hastings, NE; Stephanie Ann, Tiffany Jo, and Georgie Marie, granddaughters of Hastings, NE; Liam Alexander, great-grandson of Hastings; Mamie Gordon, sister-in-law of Lincoln, NE; and many nieces and nephews.

Betty Jean Buzek, of Milligan, was born to Henry P. Kotas and Mae Kubicek Kotas on November 22, 1929 at home in Milligan, NE. She passed away December 20, 2014 at Heritage Crossings in Geneva, NE at the age of 85 years and 28 days. She attended rural school district #5, northwest of Milligan through 8th grade, then attended Milligan High School, graduating in 1947. In July 1956, Betty began employment at Formfit Rogers in Crete, NE as a seamstress until August of 1982. In January 1983, she began working at Swingster's Apparel Marketing Industries, in Fairbury, NE until she retired. Betty was married to Merle Buzek of Milligan, NE on April 19, 1949 and to them two children were born; Marlon Ray and Deborah Jean.

Betty was a member of the United Methodist Church of Milligan, UMW, Pythian Sisters, Milligan American Legion Post 240 Auxiliary, ZCBJ Lodge, Senior Citizens Club and Betty's Club of Nebraska. Betty enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and had God's gift for music with any instrument, especially the accordion and piano.

She was preceded in death by her parents Henry P. and Mae Kotas, her in-laws Milo and Mildred Buzek, sister in-law Sue Kotas, and brother in-law Henry Bigelow. She is survived by her husband of 65 years Merle, brother, Reenlee Kotas of San Diego, CA, sister in-law Roma Bigelow of Milligan, NE, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Richard and Kathy Rischling of Milligan, NE, son Marlon (Judy) Buzek of Stromsburg, NE, daughter Deborah (Mike) Kassik of Milligan, NE, six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and three great step grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He married Donna Jean Seiffert-Bryson, the daughter of Royal George SEIFFERT and Alice LESSER. He worked with his father in home building and was a master bricklayer, working on large construction projects in several states. He was a union bricklayer in Local No. 2.

He was inducted into the US Army in 1950, and served during the Korean conflict as part of a ski patrol based out of Alaska.

He was the father of Mark Matejka of Denver and Mona Matejka (Mrs. James) Costalupes of Incline Village, Nevada, and grandfather of Vincent and Monique Matejka, Nicole, Christopher and Alexandria Costalupes. He also had two stepdaughters, Vicki Scruggs and Annette Bryson, six step grandchildren and six step great-grandchildren.

After graduation from Tobias High School, he clerked in the grocery store, and was drafted into the U.S. Army. He spent two and one-half years with Company K, 134th Infantry, 35th Division. He was transferred to Air Cadet School and trained as a pilot, and later still transferred back to the infantry, going overseas with the 77th Division to the Pacific Theater. He saw action on Iwo Shima and Leyte.

After his discharge from the service, he returned to Milligan, where he managed the Coop Grocery Store. In 1951, he moved to Tobias where he operated his own grocery store and locker for 15 years. In 1966, he was appointed a rural mail carrier. (Milligan, p. 369).

William James Kottas, only son of the late James Kottas and Rose Uldrich Kottas, was born near Tobias on August 17, 1919 and passed away on February 27, 2022. He attended rural school south of Tobias and attended Tobias High School graduating in 1937. During his teenage years he worked as a grocery clerk and also helped his father with farming. In February 1941 he was drafted into the U.S. Army where he served almost five years in the 134th Infantry, 35 Division; trained as an Airforce Cadet at Santa Ana Air Base, and later served with the 77th Infantry Division; in the Pacific Theater World War II. He was the recipient of the Bronze Star Medal and Citation Combat Infantryman's Badge, Purple Heart with two Oak Leaf clusters for being wounded twice on Okinawa, Expert Rifleman's Badge, and the Good Conduct Medal. He made several beach heads before he was discharged in October 1945. His entire life he was a true patriotic American and believed in doing good for his country. He was a member of the Firing Squad VFW Post 4959 Crete and Tobias American Legion. On October 27, 1942 he married Helen Rose Stejskal in Hawthorne, California. This union was blessed with four children: Sharon, Marylin, Janice, and Douglas. Jimmie, as most people called him, managed the Co-op Grocery Store in Milligan from 1946 to 1951. He moved to Tobias where he operated his own Locker and Grocery Store for 15 years. In 1966 he was appointed Rural Mail Carrier of the Tobias Route. From 1973-1974 he served as Officer In Charge of the Tobias Post Office returning to the Mail Carrier position at the end of the year. He then served part of the Ohiowa Mail route, as well as, the Tobias mail route. He retired in 1986. Jimmie loved sports and in his younger years managed the Little League Baseball Team for ten years in Tobias. He enjoyed attending sports events with his son and daughters during their high school years. Other interests were reading, hunting, gardening, playing cards, and dancing. He was a loving and caring husband, father, and grandfather. He loved every moment he spent playing and visiting with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He served on the Tobias Village Board, Tobias School Board, Volunteer Fire Dept., Assistant Scoutmaster, Tobias Community Historical Society Board, Saline County Museum Board, Saline Co. Crime Stoppers. He was a member of the American Legion and was a Commander of the Tobias Post, later a member of Louis Milan Post at Wilber. He served as District Eleven Adjutant for four years. A 1943 graduate of Milligan High School, she worked in many farm homes and also as a clerk-typist with the Quartermaster Corps at the Fairmont Army Air Base. (Milligan, p 313).

She continued to farm after Merlin entered the Exeter Care Center in 1989, where he passed away in 1992. When Rose Maried turned 65, she retired from farming. She was the volunteer librarian for the Nebraska State Genealogical Society for twenty years, and complied twenty-two publications for them. She also organized the Fillmore County Genealogical Society. Other memberships include the Milligan Fraternal Lodge #76 and the HSSK American Legion Auxiliary Unit.

Joe attended rural school, graduating from Milligan High School in 1946. He served in the U.S. Army from July 1951 through July 1953. After his basic training in Camp Gordon, Georgia he was stationed in Korea as a Military Policeman, where he was responsible for transporting prisoners of war. After his discharge, he returned to Saline County, Nebraska to farm. He moved back to the Kotas family farm, making his home with his parents, after his father retired. Along with farming, he is a hog feeder and breeder, a member of the American Legion and Cornhuskers Lodge, along with serving on the board of the Milligan Auditorium and Ceski Brati cemetery. Phyllis J. Engle

Funeral services for Phyllis will be held on Tuesday, February 3, 2015 at 10:30 AM at First Congregational United Church of Christ with Pastor Diane Ryder officiating.

Visitation will be begin on Monday, February 2, 2015 at 1:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Farmer & Son Funeral Home in Geneva, NE.

Graveside services will be held in the Geneva Public Cemetery.

Phyllis Jean Engle was born to Anton E. Kotas and Gertrude (Deaver) Kotas on December 20, 1925 at the family farm near Tobias, NE, and passed away January 29, 2015 at Heritage Crossings in Geneva, NE, at the age of 89 years, 1 month and 9 days. She was one of four children in the family.

Phyllis was born and raised on the family farm near Tobias, NE, and was baptized in the Catholic Faith as a child. She attended the Lone Star Country School through the 8th grade and graduated from Milligan High School in 1943. After high school she was employed at the Fairmont State Airbase.

Phyllis was united in marriage to George A. Engle of Geneva on April 25, 1946 and resided on a farm northeast of Geneva. After Phyllis married George, she joined the First Congregational Church. They had three children, Diane, George "Jr." and Barbara.

Phyllis was a quiet spoken lady and always found the good in everyone. She was a good cook, baker, and seamstress and loved her large garden.

George and Phyllis purchased the First Congregational Church parsonage on August 1, 1974 and together with Diane they moved in to town in December 1974. After moving to town Phyllis and Diane would drive to the country to raise baby chicks and a large garden.

She enjoyed dancing to Czech music. You could usually find George and Phyllis every Sunday at Pla-Mor Ballroom dancing the night away. While they were at Pla-Mor they ended up making many dancing friends.

Phyllis served her church in many capacities; as a member of the Women's Fellowship, she served as the President for several years. During holiday season she was more than willing to help with Thanksgiving Dinner the church put together. She was always willing to help the ladies of the church put together a meal for the family and congregation of a fellow member who had passed away. She was also a member of the Geneva Legion Auxiliary Post #68.

A favorite saying to her kids and one they will always remember was, "Two wrongs never makes it right".

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Donald Kotas; brothers-in-law, Francis "Fritz" Greenlee, Frank, Harold and Willis Engle; sisters-in-laws, Anna Vnoucek, Helen and Beth Engle; niece, Debbie Wiltshire; nephews, Herald Brian Wiltshire, Lawrence Engle and great-niece, Kristin Engle.

Phyllis is survived by her husband, George A. of Geneva; son, George Jr. and wife Susan of Geneva; daughters, Diane Engle of Geneva, Barbara Trapp and husband Tom of Geneva; sisters, Delmary Wiltshire of Lincoln, Faye Greenlee of York; sisters-in-law, Eleanor (Arlan) Becker of Exeter, Ruth (Delbert) Sorge of Geneva, Mary (Ronald) Uldrich of Milligan; brother-in-law, Joe A. Faye Ann Greenlee, also known as Fazey, passed away peacefully on January 15, 2024, at the age of 91 in York, Nebraska. She was born on September 5, 1932, in Tobias, Nebraska, to Anton and Gertrude Kotas. Faye was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and sister who will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

Faye married her US Air Force sweetheart, Francis Clinton Greenlee, aka "Fritz" on April 12th 1958 in Lincoln Nebraska. They began their married life together in the Air Force, living a world of adventure that took this sweet small-town farm girl all over this great country and she loved every minute of it. During their travels, they had three daughters, Monica and Mary who were born in Anchorage, Alaska, and Jenny who was born in Dover, Delaware.

After retiring from the AF, Fritz and Faye settled in York, Nebraska and never left since they found their forever home in York. Faye worked as a Teacher's Aide at Edison School and later as an Administrator at the Superintendent's Office. Her dedication to education and her impact on the lives of students will always be remembered.

Faye's selflessness and abundant kind spirit were never more obvious as she tirelessly cared for Fritz during his long, hard battle with Alzheimer's. staying by his side until it was time for him to watch over her in Heaven. She was an amazing and supportive mother to her three daughters and was an over the moon grandmother to her grandson Ethan. She also had a special place in her heart for her numerous dogs, whom she spoiled endlessly, including Tramp, Duke, Coco, Cannon, Frankie, Dutch, Finn and Henry.

Faye was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, where she found solace and strength in her faith. Outside of her family, career and religious commitments, Faye enjoyed spending her leisure time taking walks with Fritz and the dogs, reading, enjoying nature, and a good mystery on TV. These hobbies brought her joy and relaxation.

She is survived by her only living sister, Del Mary Wiltshire, her 3 daughters and her Grandson.

The family would also like to thank the York EMT's the York Hospital and the incredible care given to her by her home health team.

Faye Ann Greenlee, a remarkable woman who touched the lives of many, will be remembered for her kindness, love, and devotion. May she rest in eternal peace.

A Mass of Christian burial is scheduled for 10:00 a.m., Friday, January 19, 2024 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in York, NE. Interment will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, east of York. Visitation will be held from 1-8 p.m., Thursday, with a Rosary being said at 6 p.m. that evening at Metz Mortuary. The family will greet friends following the Rosary.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorials be made in Faye's memory to York Adopt-A-Pet or the Alzheimer's Association. These organizations were close to her heart, and any support would be greatly appreciated.

Irma "Beth" Gordan, age 88, of Seward, formerly of Bradshaw, died Saturday, April 21, 2018 in Seward.

She was born Irma Elizabeth Kotas at home in Monroe, on Sept.1, 1929, the oldest of William H. and Irma (Essex) Kotas. She graduated from Milligan High School in 1946 and attended Nebraska Wesleyan University for one year, earning her teaching certificate. She taught in Fillmore County Rural Schools District #44 and #95 for two years. She married Alvin L. Gordan on June 5, 1949, at the Milligan Methodist Church. Beth and Alvin lived in Meadow Grove where Alvin taught for one year. They then moved to Bradshaw to make their permanent home. They traveled to South Dakota for their honeymoon, and also to Texas, California, Idaho, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and various states in between (traveling by car), as well as to Cancun, Mexico City, and several times to Hawaii. She loved to preserve garden produce that Alvin grew, crochet, sew clothes for her family, read books, and complete her family's history. She was a 60 year member of the Bradshaw United Methodist Church, and was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star (5 different Nebraska Chapters), lastly in Utica #199 for over 60 years.

Beth is survived by their children, Joyce Bogen Campbell of Bradshaw, Trish (Dave) Collister of Dwight and Jim Gordan of Bradshaw. Grandchildren include, Mark (Nichole) Bogen of Bennett, Liz (James) Soukup of Lincoln, Brian Campbell (Amy Richardson) of Lincoln, Cody Campbell of Bradshaw, Melanie (Dan) Collister-Foulk of Seward, Jayme (Micah) Pomplun of Broken Bow and Kenzie Gordan of Norfolk. Great-grandchildren, Anya and Sean Bogan, Kaylyn and Jessa Soukup, Alivia Campbell, Xander and Isabel Foulk, Khloe, Kinlee and Kenna Pomplun.

She is also survived by her sisters, Jeanie Holtmeier and Mary Ann Rut; sister-in-law, Elisa Gordan along with several nieces and nephews.

Alvin died in 2004, and she continued to live at home alone until May of 2016 when she moved into an apartment at Brookdale Senior Living in Seward to be closer to her daughter, Trish.

Beth is preceded in death by her grandparents; parents; husband; grandson, John Gordan; great-grandson, Evan Soukup; brothers-in-law, Bill Gordan, Lee Holtmeier and Roger Rut.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m., Saturday, April 28, 2018 at the Bradshaw United Methodist Church in Bradshaw with the Reverend Karla Sheffy officiating. Interment will follow at the Plainfield Cemetery, west of Bradshaw. Visitation will be from 1 '96 8 p.m. Friday, April 27, with her family greeting friends from 6:30 '96 8 p.m. at the mortuary in York. Memorials are directed to family for later designation.

KEARNEY Willa J. "Jeanie" Holtmeier, 81, of Kearney, formerly of Grand Island and Lexington, passed away on Thursday, July 26, 2018.

Service and celebration of Jeanie's life will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Peace Lutheran Church, 1710 N. North Road in Grand Island. The Rev. Michael Reiners will officiate. Burial will be in Grand Island City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at All Faiths Funeral Home, 2929 S. Locust in Grand Island.

Jeanie was born on Sept. 12, 1936 in Wahoo, the daughter of William H. and D. Irma (Essex) Kotas. She grew up and graduated from high school at Milligan.

On August 4, 1957, Jeanie was married to LeeRoy M. Holtmeier. The couple lived in Guide Rock, Cincinnati, Ohio, Lexington and Leola, Pa., before moving to Grand Island.

Jeanie was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, Women in Missions and Stephen Ministry. She loved family and friends and thoroughly enjoyed being a cheerleader for all of her grandkids' activities. She also loved playing cards, gardening, baking, sewing, volunteering, planning trips and traveling.

Those left to cherish her memory include her son and daughter-in-law, Doug and Brigitte Holtmeier of Kearney; a daughter, Shari Holtmeier and LaDon Biason of Lutz, Fla.; grandchildren, Liza Lorenz and her husband, Chad, Blake Holtmeier and Brady Holtmeier; a great-grandson, Devon Lorenz; and a sister, Mary Ann Rut of Lincoln.

She was welcomed into heaven by her husband, Lee; her parents, and a sister, Beth Gordan.

Memorials are suggested to Peace Lutheran Church in Grand Island or St. John's Good Samaritan Society of Kearney.

Mary Ann Rut, 83, of Lincoln, Nebraska passed away Wednesday November 22, 2023. She was born March 20, 1940 in Friend, Nebraska to William and Irma Kotas.

She grew up in Milligan, Nebraska moving to Lincoln, Nebraska to attend Lincoln School of Commerce. She lived all of her adult life in Lincoln. She married Roger Rut on September 11, 1960. Mary Ann had three children ? Gary Thiemann, Keith Rut and Karen McCain. Roger and Mary Ann were married 50-years before Roger passed away July 2011.

Mary Ann is survived by her children Gary (Laurette) Thiemann of Shreveport, Louisiana, Keith (Patti) Rut of York, Nebraska and Karen (Todd) McCain of Lincoln, Nebraska. She had eight grandchildren, Micheala Rut of Kearney, Nebraska, Emi (Curtis) Leicht of Lincoln, Nebraska, Sam McCain of Fort Moore, Georgia, Janell (Bill) Green of York, Nebraska, Ashley Reimers (Matt Miller) of Sterling, Colorado, Lecia Reimers (Aaron Schaefer) of Sterling, Colorado, Kevin (Laura Jean) Thiemann of Plano, Texas and Jody (Sam) Thiemann of Shreveport, Louisiana as well as seven great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by her husband Roger Rut, parents William and Irma Kotas, in-laws James and Mildred Rut, two sisters and brothers in law Beth (Alvin) Gordon and Jeanie (Lee) Holtmeier.

Marvin B. Tenopir, 82 of Lincoln, died on Thursday (8-26-10). He was born in Tobias, Neb. on August 10, 1928 to Charles E. and Vlasta J. (Kotas) Tenopir. Marvin was a member of Havelock United Methodist Church, and an Army Veteran, serving in the Korean War with the 194th Engineering Combat Battalion. He was also a member of the Goodyear Retiree's Club, the Havelock American Legion, and the Waverly VFW. Marvin was a past member of the Good Sam Campers and a past Boy Scout Leader. He enjoyed fishing, camping, and tinkering with anything he could get his hands on. He was a jokester and a true gentleman; always willing to help anyone. He especially loved his family and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
