2. | Justice Joseph Strong (1.Rachel1) was born on 2 Dec 1672 in Northampton, Hampshire County, Massachusetts; died on 23 Dec 1763 in Coventry, Tolland County, Connecticut. Notes:
He removed from Northampton to Coventry, in March, 1716, seven years after the first settlement of that town. He was a farmer and a man of property and consideration. He held various town offices of importance, as town treasurer in 1716; selectman for six years; and justice of the peace for many years from 1723 onwards. In 1721, the first year that Coventry was respresented in the Colonial Legislature, he was sent to it as the representative of the town. There were two sessions yearly of the Legislature, in May and October, until 1819. Justice Joseph Strong was for fifty-two times elected a member of the Legislature and including extra sessions was during sixty-five sessions a member of the General Assembly of Connecticut. He was moderator of the first town-meeting held April 24, 1718, and often afterwards of others, holding the office for the last time April 11, 1763, when 90 years old. He was a member of the Colonial Legislature for the last time in May, 1762, when 89 year old. His son, Phinehas being the other representative from Coventry. His second wife was Ruth (last name not discovered) of Coventry, Ct. They had no issue. She died at Glastenbury, Ct., Feb 14, 1768. (Dwight, p. 309).

Ephraim was the ancestor of Eastman Strong Minor, a missionary to Ceylon. Eastman Minor's son, Dr. William Chester Minor was a Union Army surgeon whose Civil War experiences caused a permanent mental breakdown. His subequent criminal acts led him to be confined for the rest of his life to the Broadmoor Criminal Lunatic Asylum in England. In Simon Winchester's book, THE PROFESSOR AND THE MADMAN, the story of Dr. Minor's twenty year involvement in the creation of the Oxford English Dictionary is detailed. Dr. James Murray, editor of the OED came to rely on the thorough and well documented contributions from Dr. Minor, assuming for many years his most diligent contributor was a staff doctor at Broadmoor, not an inmate.

In 1777, Oliver served in the Connecticut Militia in the Revolutionary war. He was captured by the British at the time of the Danbury raid, April 1777, and carried to New York. (Connecticut Men in Revolution, p. 493)
After the war he sold his tannery and removed to Poultney, Vermont, where he purchased a farm. He owned one right in the Susquehannah Purchase as an original proprietor. (Milford Land Record Book 24, pp. 363, 561).
