  1. 1.  Rebecca Bal(L)\(Dwin) was born about 1826 in Pennsylvania; died after 1850 in Sabine County, Texas.

    Notes:

A mother at age 18, and widowed with three young sons at the age of 24. She appears to have remarried Solomon Causey sometime after the 1850 census. It appears that she died prior to 1860, as only her sons, William and John were living in Solomon's home at the time of the 1860 census, along with Solomon's new wife Harriett.

A listing in the Family Bible of Catherine Parker Fullen, under burials, shows:

    Becky Fullen 1852

Her grandson, W.F. Fullen, reported her maiden name as Baldwin. Some published histories of Sabine County show her instead as Rebecca Ball. No other Ball or Baldwin families are listed on the 1850 or 1860 Census for Sabine County. The census shows Rebecca as being born in Pennsylvania. Her grandson William reported that she was instead born in North Carolina.

Rebecca married James C. Fullen before 1844. James was born before 1826 in Pennsylvania; died after 1848 in Republic Of Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Children:
    1. 2. William Morrison Fullen  Descendancy chart to this point was born on 16 Sep 1844 in County Of Sabine, Republic Of Texas; died on 28 Jul 1926 in Hemphill, Sabine County, Texas; was buried in Gravel Hill Cemetery, Sabine County, Texas.
    2. 3. John W. Fullen  Descendancy chart to this point was born on 28 Aug 1845 in County Of Sabine, Republic Of Texas; died on 1 Mar 1933 in Sabine County, Texas; was buried in Rosevine Cemetery, Rosevine, Sabine County, Texas.
    3. 4. James C. Fullen  Descendancy chart to this point was born about 1848 in Sabine County, Texas; died about 1883 in Texas.

Rebecca married Solomon Causey after 1850 in Sabine County, Texas. Solomon was born about 1816 in Mississippi; died after 1870 in Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  William Morrison FullenWilliam Morrison Fullen Descendancy chart to this point (1.Rebecca1) was born on 16 Sep 1844 in County Of Sabine, Republic Of Texas; died on 28 Jul 1926 in Hemphill, Sabine County, Texas; was buried in Gravel Hill Cemetery, Sabine County, Texas.

    Notes:

William enlisted in Co F, 11th Texas Regiment CSA under Col. Roberts and Cpt. Silbey on 17 February 1862. He was discharged on 3 August 1862, cause not stated. According to Robert Cecil McDaniel's book CITIZEN SOLDIERS OF SABINE COUNTY, TEXAS, he was wounded at war. His younger brother John served with him in the same unit.

Around 1868, William and John married sisters, Margaret and Jane Allen. Neither family can be located on the 1870 Sabine County census. It is possible they were simply missed in this first census in the aftermath of the Civil War. At the time of the 1880 census, William & Elizabeth and John & Jane lived in adjoining homes. Listed in William's home was 60 year old Celie Payne, a servant born in Georgia. Could she have been a former slave of Elizabeth Allen's step-Grandmother, Jane Payne Allen?

William's confederate pension application listed his occupation as Carpenter. On census records, he was reported as a farmer.

His younger children, Lena, Ginnie, and Washington Fullen are all shown on the Sabine County 1890 Scholastic census. The very youngest, eight year old Britton, remained at home.

In 1900, sons William and Lawrence lived on either side of their parent's home. Washington and Britton were still at home. According to the 1910 census, William and Margaret had been married for 42 years, and had a total of 6 children, 5 of whom were still living.

On some census records, his middle initial was shown as "R." However, according to his tombstone, his middle name was Morrison.

In 1924 he served as a witness to the confederate pension application for Susannah Halbert Mason, along with witnesse W W Halbert. Both signed with their marks.

    Notes:

Most official documents and census records simply show him as either John Fullen or John W. Fullen. His middle name is not known with certainty.

Frances Simmons [mailto:fsimmons@ruralcomm.com], in an email dated June 10, 2000, wrote that she discovered that John's middle name was Willoughby "last year at the Fullen family reunion by looking at notes and articles they had kept. I think one article called it the James Willoughby Fullen reunion. Before that I only had James W. Fullen...." However, Danice Hurt, a direct descendant through son William Franklin Fullen, emailed in January, 2012 that "my mother (Bobbie Sue Fullen Lunsford) has always told me that his name was John Whitney Fullen. He lived with Frank & Nannie Fullen when my mother was a child. Unfortunately, so far I have been unable to find any documentation as to the middle name, your website is the first time I had heard of any other name." A third possibility is that his middle name was Whitaker, as this is the middle name of his eldest son.

John and his brother, William were orphaned sometime before 1860. They lived with their stepfather, Solomon Causey, and his new wife until the Civil War.

John was just 16 when he enlisted in the Confederate States Army in February, 1862, alongside his brother William. John served in Company F, 11th Texas Regiment, from February, 1862 through February, 1864. The 11th Texas Infantry Regiment was placed under the command of Colonel Oran M. Roberts (a later governor of Texas). The 11th was marched to Arkansas where it combined into Randal's Brigade, McCulloch's Division in September 1862. The regiment is later moved to Louisiana. They combined forces with Green's 15th and 18th Texas Infantry on November 1, 1863. The combined force went south from Opelousas, Louisiana toward Grand Coteau in what Roberts described as a "rapid and fatiguing march." The 11th was ordered forward towards the enemy by the commander of the Confederate District of Western Louisiana, Major General Richard Taylor. On November 3, 1863, they were deployed in the Battle of Bayou Bourbeau. Several companies were sent out as skirmishers. The remainder of the 11th, including Company F, were deployed on the left wing of the lines, roughly two miles south of Opelusas. The infantry force retired from the field after approximately 3 hours of combat. The 11th reported 4 killed, 15 wounded, and 32 missing. Union casualties in the whole engagement numbered approximately 716 men. On November 4, 1863, the 11th joined the rest of Walker's Division in holding the country from Simsport to Opelousa against future assaults by Union forces.

I was unable to locate John W. Fullen in Sabine County, or anywhere else, at the time of the 1870 census. It was possible he was simply missed by the enumerator due to the turmoil of the reconstruction.

John W. Fullen made an application for a Pre-emption grant of land in Sabine County on August 12, 1876. In this application he, and two witnesses (G. Guthrie and A.C. Woolam), swore that he was a bona fide settler on vacant public land, and the head of a family. Pre-emption grants were made after statehood, and from 1866 to 1898 up to 160 acres could be claimed. Homesteaders were required to live on the land for three years and make improvements (such as building a barn) in order to qualify for a pre-emption grant of 160 acres. He patented his application on December 11, 1879. In his affadavit John Fullen swore, and his two witnesses affirmed, that he had occupied the land he was claiming for three consecutive years, from Sept. 30, 1876 through the current date. Witnesses were J. P. Payne and Wm. W. Weatherred. J. P. Payne was a step-son of Thompson Allen, the grandfather of John's wife, Jane Allen Fullen. The original Sabine Preemption Grand is on file at the Texas General Land Office, File #68.

As of 1880, John was living in Bronson and working as a farmer. He and Jane had four children at the time: James, Leala (Lula), Viola, and John. Viola can be found on the actual census microfilm, but is missing from Toole and Speight's transcription of the 1880 census.

None of his children appeared to have been recorded as attending school at the time of the 1890 Scholastic census, unlike those of his brother William, who had attended school. Presumably they were needed at home to help John and Jane on the farm.

According to the Sabine County 1910 Federal Census, John and Jane Fullen had been married for 42 years. They had had 9 children, 7 of whom were still living.

In his Confederate Pension Application file, the Application for Mortuary Warrant indicates that he died of Bright's Disease (kidney disease) in the home of his son, W.F. Fullen of Bronson.

Several photos exist of John Fullen. One is a family grouping, but only he and Jane have been identified positively.

  3. 4.  James C. Fullen Descendancy chart to this point (1.Rebecca1) was born about 1848 in Sabine County, Texas; died about 1883 in Texas.

    Notes:

James C is listed as a two year old at the time of the 1850 Sabine County census, along with this two older brothers and widowed mother. However, since neither James nor his mother can be located on any subsequent Sabine County census records, it had been long assumed that he probably died young.

Amy Fullen of Dallas, however, states that the James DID survive and grow into adulthood. In March, 2005, in response to a query from Melinda Strong, she emailed the following explanation: "According to the family bible...Rebecca or "Becky" as they called her did die in 1852, now family lore says that she did marry Solomon but that he was a mean man and she died soon after marrying him. Family lore meaning aunt Doris's husband, he is the only old timer left with us, he just turned 101 last month. Well he says that James C moved in with his uncle James and his wife as he was the youngest, this I guess would have been the brother of either James W or Rebecca, he is not sure whose brother he was, just that James lived with them and worked on their farm until he married....[Aunt Doris's husband] also has all the genealogy work that his wife did on the family and he is the source of the family bible as well." She further indicated that "I was given the bible upon...Doris's death, it seems that no one else in the family collects these as I do. That was some 15 years ago I received her treasure trove. It did not say anything about who they were, where they might be buried, or what towns they lived in, just the names and dates."

Amy had scans of the "Birth, Marriages & Burials" pages from the bible posted on her website, however the title page or publication information from the bible were note posted, so it is currently not known exactly when these names and dates were recorded, and by whom. This could account for some of the seeming discrepencies of the Bible notes with other records. Amy's website is privatized, but a password can be obtained from the site administrator. The bible scans are also reproduced in Amy's book, the "The Fullen and Post Family Genealogy Book" by Ameth Carmicheal. This is Amy Fullen's pen name. The book can be purchased from at www.lulu.com .

In early 2006, Amy posted to her website that "James C Fullen was taken in by Powell W. Fullen and his wife Sarah. This couple is seen nearby Becky and her sons on the 1850 census but on all other census records they are listed as Fuller's." It does appear, from examining the census microfilm, that Powell's last name could have been FULLEN. He is indexed by Ancestry.com as Powell FURLER, and in shown in Schuluter and Toole's 1850 census transcription as Powell FULLER. James could have lived with Powell Fullen after his Mother died in 1852. However, he is not listed with Powell and Sarah on the 1860 San Augustine County Census, or on any subsequent census records.

His birth information, as shown in the scan of BIRTHS recorded in the Fullen Bible, was as follows:

    J C Fullen 1848

His marriage information, also listed under UNIONS in the Bible, is shows as follows:

    JC & Catherine 1868

  1. 5.  William Ashley Fullen Descendancy chart to this point (2.William2, 1.Rebecca1) was born on 22 Jun 1871 in Milam, Sabine County, Texas; died on 16 Oct 1943 in Newton County, Texas; was buried in Gravel Hill Cemetery, Sabine County, Texas.

    Notes:

William lived next door to his parents at the time of the 1900 Sabine County Census. He had been married to Minnie for seven years at the time of the census, and it appears their first two sons, Ashley and Sidney had already died.

    Notes:

According to the following marriage information, Birdwell, R.D. to A.A. Fullen 7 Mar 1898 by W.T. Harvil, M.G. The 1900 Census shows A.A. Fullen to be named Alice A., and that she was born in approximately 1881. I am assuming she is a daughter of John and Jane Fullen, and not of William and Elizabeth Fullen, for the following reasons:

    1) There appear to have been only two Fullen Household's in Sabine County in 1881; that of William Fullen and that of John Fullen. It is assumed one of these two men was her father.

    2) Alice would have been too young to be listed with either Fullen family in 1880. The census for 1890, when she was age 9, was destroyed. She was married in 1898, so is listed with her husband in 1900. This is why she will not be found listed with either family on census records.

    3) According to the Sabine County 1910 Federal Census, John and Jane Fullen had been married for 42 years. They had had 9 children, 7 of whom were still living. By examining other census information, eight of these nine total children can be accounted for. I believe Alice to be the ninth. William and Margaret had also been married for a total of 42 years. They had 6 children, 5 of whom were still living. By examining other census records, all six can be accounted for.

    4) On the 1890 Scholastic Census, Lena, 13, Ginnie 11, and Washington 8 were recorded as attending No. 57, Bethany. Surely if Alice were one of their siblings, she would have been in attendance as well. She and Washington were both born circa 1881. By way of contrast, none of the children of John and Jane Fullen were recorded on the 1890 Scholastic Census. Presumably they were needed at home for farmwork.

Alice married Rush David Birdwell on 7 Mar 1898 in Sabine County, Texas. Rush (son of James Andrew Birdwell and Mary Alice Cogburn) was born on 19 Dec 1877 in Milam, Sabine County, Texas; died on 14 May 1966 in Weslaco, Hidalgo County, Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Children:
    1. 88. James Chalmas Birdwell  Descendancy chart to this point was born on 15 Jan 1899 in Sabine County, Texas; died on 12 Jun 1982 in San Augustine County, Texas; was buried in Rosevine Cemetery, Rosevine, Sabine County, Texas.

  12. 16.  Daisie Mae Fullen Descendancy chart to this point (3.John2, 1.Rebecca1) was born on 18 Nov 1883 in Sabine County, Texas; died on 28 Dec 1940 in Hemphill, Sabine County, Texas; was buried in Rosevine Cemetery, Rosevine, Sabine County, Texas.

    Notes:

A digital image of her actual Texas Death certificate is viewable online at FamilySearch.org, Texas Deaths, 1890-1976. She was shown as a housewife, and the daughter of John W. Fullen. The informant was Beatrice Becton, presumably her daughter.

Daisie married James Levi Becton on 3 Dec 1905 in Sabine County, Texas. James (son of Levi Edward Becton and Emily A. Humphreys) was born on 25 Dec 1883 in Sabine County, Texas; died on 29 Jul 1961 in Houston, Harris County, Texas; was buried in Rosevine Cemetery, Rosevine, Sabine County, Texas. 13. 17.  Wiley Howard Fullen Descendancy chart to this point (3.John2, 1.Rebecca1) was born on 10 Jul 1886 in Tebo, Sabine County, Texas; and died.

    Notes:

Wiley was a contractor for the Highway department, according to the 1920 census. Henry Wright, who also worked for the Highway department, was shown as a boarder in Wiley's home in 1920.

  14. 18.  William Franklin Fullen Descendancy chart to this point (3.John2, 1.Rebecca1) was born on 13 Jan 1889 in Sabine County, Texas; died on 8 May 1969 in Conroe, Montgomery County, Texas; was buried in Rosevine Cemetery, Rosevine, Sabine County, Texas.

    Notes:

His Texas Death Certificate, viewable online at FamilySearch.org, Texas Deaths, 1890-1976, show that he was a retired poultry farmer. The informant was his daughter, Mrs. Elvin Edgar.

Could it be possible that the information relating to his death is not correct? Sharon Leamon descends from a Willoughby Simon Fullen, born May 10 1871. On his 1933 death certificate his dad is listed as Jim Fuller (Fullen) and his mother as a Parker, with no first name shown. Both his parents were shown as being born in Texas.

So could this Willoughby actually be Sharon Leamon's ancestor, living into his sixties instead of dying at age 13?

Or perhaps James Fullen and Catherine Parker had two sons that both used Willoughby as part of their name, with one of them dying young?

PLEASE EMAIL IF YOU CAN HELP SOLVE THIS MYSTERY!

  18. 22.  Emily Elizabeth Fullen Descendancy chart to this point (4.James2, 1.Rebecca1) was born on 7 Dec 1873 in Vernon Parish, Louisiana; died on 25 Jan 1948 in Lufkin, Angelina County, Texas; was buried in Ebenezer Cemetery, Jasper County, Texas.

    Notes:

    Former Resident Dies At Lufkin

Funeral services were held Monday at the Ebenezer cemetery for Mrs. Elizabeth Byerly Alexander, 74, of Lufkin and formerly a Jasper citizen, who died Sunday in the Angelina County hospital.

She had lived in Lufkin three years and was a member of the Pentecostal church. Mrs. Byerly was the mother of Jack Byerly of Jasper and Mrs. Ellie Womack of Jasper.

SOURCE: Obituary, as published in the Jasper Newsboy, Thursday, 5 February 1948, page 10 Transcription is courtesy of Yolanda Pepper Miller

Her death certificate shows the following: State of Texas, County of Angelina, City Lufkin, Angelina County Hospital Length of Residence 3 years Address Sheppard Ave. Female. White. Widowed. DOB December 7th, 1873 Age 74 years 1 month 18 days Housewife Born Vernon Parish, LA to James FULLEN born in Alabama (?) and Katherine PARKER born in Alabama. Cause of Death Diabetic Coma 2-3 days Contributory causes Possible Brain Hemorrhage (5 days) & Hypostatic Pneumonia (2 days) due to accident (hit by car in Lufkin).

She may have been born prior to 1873, as the records in the Fullen's family Bible show the oldest daughter as "Emily, (born) 1870."

Peggy Tanner McDonald instead shows her as the daughter of William (sic) FULLEN and Catherine E. STROYON of Center, Shelby County, Texas. It appears that Catherine Parker married a Mr. Stroyon after the death of Jim Fullen, as she is living with Emily and Vernon and listed by this name in both 1910 and 1930.

Emily married Vernon Teller Byerly about 1895 in Texas. Vernon (son of Uriah P. Byerly and Helen "Haddie" May) was born on 21 Nov 1878 in Texas; died on 13 Oct 1959 in Jasper County, Texas; was buried in Ebenezer Cemetery, Jasper County, Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

His birth information, as shown in the scan of BIRTHS recorded in the Fullen bible, was as follows:

    Jack 1876

The information on his draft registration for World War I shows that his full name was Jack John Fullen, and that his date of birth was February 22, 1874. He registered on September 12, 1918, and was shown as being married to Mrs. Nettie Fullen, and as a farmer in Freestone, Navarro County, Texas. His death certificate showed his DOB as February 22, 1875, and indicated his parents were Jim Fullen and Elizabeth Parker. He was listed a Farmer. The informant was Mrs. Gladys Atteberry, presumably his daughter.

Ameth Carmichael shows that Jack FULLEN married (1) Nettie COOPER and that he married (2) Mary WATKINS.

Ameth Carmicheal (Amy Fullen) notes that he married second a Mary WATKINS. I don't think this is correct. The Jack Fullen listed below was born circa 1859. The Jack Fullen listed in the census extracts above was born ca 1876. This is a significant age difference. Other sources show that the Jack Fullen below was actually Harrom Jackson Fullen, born in Comanche County (according to his family), or Tarrant County (according to his death certificate). Harrom Jackson Fullen and Mary Watkins were married ca 1874 or 1875 in Comanche or Coleman County, Texas.

  22. 26.  Marian Fullen Descendancy chart to this point (4.James2, 1.Rebecca1) was born about 1875; and died.

    Notes:

Her birth information, as shown in the scan of BIRTHS recorded in the Fullen bible, was as follows:

    Marion 1975

Marian married James Boyd Putnam in 1898. James was born before 1875; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  23. 27.  Minnie Fullen Descendancy chart to this point (4.James2, 1.Rebecca1) was born between 1876 and 1882 in Sabine County, Texas; died in Aug 1971 in Angelina County, Texas.

    Notes:

Her birth information, as shown in the scan of BIRTHS recorded in the Fullen bible, was as follows:

    Minnie 1876

Ameth Carmichael shows she married W.J. SHIPP on 7-10-1889 in Leon County, Texas. This record may have been for another Minnie Fullen, as she would have only been 13 years in 1889 (and possibly even younger), and there is no indication that she moved to Leon County. There is a notation, however, in the UNIONS section of the Fullen family bible, that "Minnie and William" were wed ca 1899. William's last name is not shown.

Ameth further cites this cemetery record as Minnie's, from the Freeman Cemetery in Angelina County, Texas:

    THOMPSON,Minnie V. 7-9-1882 8-11-1971

There is a Minnie V. Thompson listed on the SSDI with dates similar, but not identical, to the above listing. According to the SSDI, Minnie Thompson was born on July 9, 1880 and died on August 15, 1971. The similarities in the two sets of records make it appear as if they do indeed relate to the same person. Perhaps the cemetery information was simply recorded incorrectly. The Texas Death Index shows yet a third date of death, that of August 9, 1971.

A request was made by Melinda Strong to the Social Security Administration for a copy of Minnie's application for a Social Security Account Number. In response, the Social Security Administration mailed a copy of a "Request for E/R Action", which was the only information they had on file for Minnie. This application was filed with the Lufkin, Texas District office for purposes of making an HIB claim. Minnie was assigned 461-86-2495 as her account number. The form listed her date of birth as July 9, 1880. This would make her some four years younger than the date shown in the Fullen bible, but two years older than the cemetery records indicate. It is possible that her exact year of birth had been forgotten, even by Minnie herself. Additionally, on this application, her parents were shown as Jim FULMER and Elizabeth PARKER. It appears that she was born in Hemphill, Sabine County, Texas. Note that her father's last name is shown as FULMER and not FULLEN. Perhaps this was simply a transcription error.

It appears likely that Minnie Thompson is indeed the daughter of Jim FULLEN and Elizabeth PARKER, but there is still some uncertainty. Perhaps obtaining a copy of her death certificate and/or obituary would help clarify matters. Please email us if you know more about Minnie.

  24. 28.  Willie Fullen Descendancy chart to this point (4.James2, 1.Rebecca1) was born about 1877; and died.

    Notes:

Birth information, as shown in the scan of BIRTHS recorded in the Fullen bible, was as follows:

    William 1877

The UNIONS section of the bible further shows:

    William and Jennie 1900

In her online tree, Amy Fullen had originally cited William as being married to a Jennie L. Lofton.

However, in an update to her tree, she showed this child as Willie Drucella Fullen, with a marriage in 1909 to J. L. Lofton, and date of death as 1968 in Lufkin.

It is therefore not clear if Willie is Male or Female. His/her obituary and/or death certificate might clear this up. Please email if you know more about Willie/William.

  25. 29.  James Marion Fullen Descendancy chart to this point (4.James2, 1.Rebecca1) was born on 22 Sep 1881 in Hemphill, Sabine County, Texas; died on 4 Sep 1951 in Dallas, Dallas County, Texas; was buried in Shooks Chapel Cemetery, Sulphur Spring, Hopkins County, Texas.

    Notes:

In 1910, there was a Marion Fullen, age 22, who was a carpenter and living as a boarder in the home of Lewis STONE of Tennessee in Angelina County, Texas. He was listed as married, even though no wife or children appeared to be in the home with him. This was PROBABLY a different Marion Fullen based on the age (which should have been around 28).

    Notes:

I was not able to locate the family of Ferman Fullen in Robert Cecil McDaniel's transcription of the 1920 Sabine County census. However, they were listed on the 1920 Texas Soundex as residents of Sabine County, as follows. The soundex references Vol. 142, ED 170, Sht 3, Line 18. I examined the actual microfilm and did find the family. The microfilm copy was very light and nearly illegible, however. It appears that the soundex information was probably correct.

    Per the 1920 Soundex card:

According to a copy of an obituary for F. E. Fullen, not fully dated or referenced, "ORANGE, May 11--Ferman Egbert Fullen, 48, of Orange, an employee of the Consolidated Steel corporation, died at a local hospital at 7 a.m. Thursday as a result of injuries sustained when he fell several hours earlier at the shipyard. Ameth Carmicheal ALSO lists this marriage:

iii. Effie COOPER (daughter of John Cooper and Anna Pounds) was born 1894 in Arkansas. She married Robert Lawrence (Bob) FULLEN, son of Lawrence "Lon" Allen FULLEN and Margarete Elvina MCNAUGHTEN. He was born 1904 in Milam, Sabine County, Texas.

Effie's older sisters, Jeanett "Nettie" Cooper and Julia Bay Cooper, married Fullen brothers. Their husbands were both sons of James Fullen and Katherine Elizabeth Parker. Robert was a first cousin, once removed, of their husband's. Francis Simmons, however, does not note this marriage.

Cheryl Fullen, the wife of Robert's son Don Wheelan Fullen, writes that "Robert was married 4-5 times..Effie was one wife" but that Kathryn Wilkins was her mother-in-law, and the mother of Robert's three sons, Larry, Don (her husband) and Austin.

  46. 75.  Alonzo Alkony Fuller Descendancy chart to this point (13.Viola3, 3.John2, 1.Rebecca1) was born on 1 Jul 1890 in Rosevine, Sabine County, Texas; died on 20 Dec 1967 in Beaumont, Jefferson County, Texas; was buried in Hemphill City Cemetery, Hemphill, Sabine County, Texas.

    Notes:

In her weekly Sabine County Reporter column, "On the Bright Side", Mary Howell wrote that she remembered Alonzo and Emma Fuller. "Mrs. Emma was a school teacher and she influenced the lives of hundreds of Hemphill students. Alonzo was a carpenter and he built several homes in the Hemphill area including the one hundred and nine year old house that I live in now." (Page 4, July 18, 2007).

The following information was extracted from his obituary: "Lonzo Fuller died at 9 am December 20, 1967 in St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont, where he had been for three weeks. He was a lifelong resident of Sabine County and a member of a pioneer family in this region. He was a retired building contractor. He was survived by his (second) wife, Jeannette Wright Fuller, his daughter Mrs. Lexie Smith of Akron, Ohio, his granddaughter, two brothers Joe and Hermann Fuller both of the Rosevine Community, four sisters Mrs. Nina McLemore of San Augustine, Mrs. Ethly (sic) Eddings of Rosevine, Mrs. Bertha Fuller (sic) of Conroe and Mrs. Tera Coussons (sic) of Carthage. His funeral services were held 2:30 pm Thursday, December 21 in the First Baptist Church in Hemphill. The Reverend Clarence Howell, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Boling, Texas, and the Rev. Tommy Long, pastor of the Newton Church of God, officiated. He was buried in Hemphill cemetery under the direction of Starr Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Leon Adickes, Lon Wright, Oscar Pate, Dan Prado, Joe Howard and Louis McDonald."
According to "A Pictorial History of Sabine County, Texas", Mrs. Alonzo Fuller was a fifth grade teacher at Hemphill in 1941. Per William Kent Anderson, she was a graduate of Stephen F. Austin University. This book instead shows Lonzo's name as Lonzo Alcony Fuller. On one census for Sabine County, he was shown as "Lawrence A" instead of Alonzo. This Federal Census also had the number "2" in the column for U-C Vet. Army/Navy.

  47. 76.  Nina Ophelia FullerNina Ophelia Fuller Descendancy chart to this point (13.Viola3, 3.John2, 1.Rebecca1) was born on 15 Sep 1891 in Rosevine, Sabine County, Texas; died on 8 Jul 1980 in Lufkin, Angelina County, Texas; was buried in Rosevine Cemetery, Rosevine, Sabine County, Texas.

    Notes:

Nina Fuller was a striking. She was nearly six feet tall and slender. When she unwound her hair from the bun she usually wore, it cascaded down her back almost to her feet. She enjoyed gardening and quilting, growing most of her own vegetables. She was a thrifty woman. She continued to make her own soap from lye, pine rosin and "fat cracklings" even when she could just as easily purchased a bar at the store.

Being the oldest daughter, Nina helped her mother daily with the household chores. She remembers that when she was quite young, her parents went to the State Fair in Dallas by horse and buggy. They came home with a washboard and a box of packaged laundry soap. Nina claims they were the first family in Sabine County to have a washboard, and remembers neighbors coming by on wash day just to see how it worked. The 1940 census indicates she had attended school for six years.

She was a staunch member of the Rosevine Church of God. She truly believed in doing good works, and never turned away anyone in need. Her son Tom remembers that their home was on the "hobo circuit" during the depression. He often passed men asleep on a spare mattress in their garage on his way to school. She fed everyone who came to their door hungry, and made regular visits to the local nursing home to take food to friends and relatives.

Nina Sue Wade, who was a backdoor neighbor to the McLemore family when they lived in town, recalls that her mother relied on her more experienced neighbors parenting advice. The Wade family had several young children, mainly very active boys, with Nina being the oldest. Mrs. Wade worked hard to keep her rambuctious children in line, to no avail. Mrs. McLemore advised her to ignore the minor infractions. Nina Sue recalled her mother often quoting a saying Mrs. McLemore told her, "When your children are young, they step on your shoestrings. When they get older, they step on your heartstrings." She would go on to advise her to cherish her children while they were young and full of spirit, because she would miss them sorely when they were grown and on their own.

Nina McLemore was an independant woman, living alone in a house her brother Lonzo built for her after her husband died. She lived next door to her son Percy, and her grandson's Dental Office was directly behind her home. She was able to live at home and care for herself until she was in her mid 80's, when she went to live with her daughter Evon.

Nina Fuller had an oval, concave portrait drawn of Price, probably from a photo taken of him before his death. She left the portrait to her daughter, Evon. Evon gave the portrait to niece Melinda McLemore Strong, who had it reframed.

  49. 78.  Brooks John FullerBrooks John Fuller Descendancy chart to this point (13.Viola3, 3.John2, 1.Rebecca1) was born on 1 Mar 1895 in Rosevine, Sabine County, Texas; died on 31 Dec 1918 in Sabine County, Texas.

    Notes:

Although Brooks was said to have died of tuberculosis, he might actually have died in the great Spanish influenza epidemic of 1918. The disease maneuvered its way into the United States by soldiers, nurses and volunteers, viral carriers returning home from contagious flu infested combat zones. On October 31, 1918, the headlines in neighboring Jasper County, Texas read, "Flu Epidemic Raging the Globe--Over 20 Million Deaths Expected--Anti Influenza Vaccines Fail." The epidemic peaked in East Texas during the icy winter of 1918. (Source: Dony Harrison, Jasper NewsBoy January 20, 1999). No death certificate is on file for Brooks or his brother Price, who both died as young men.

    Notes:

Melinda McLemore remembers visiting her Grandaunt, the widowed Ethel Eddings, when she was a young girl. Even something as ordinary as taking a walk with her grandmother Nina and Aunt Ethel became an exciting adventure. Ethel carried her shotgun with her, constantly on the lookout for those "polecats (skunks) and armadillos" that wreaked havoc on her gardens.

Ethel married Grover David Eddings on 31 Oct 1915 in Sabine County, Texas. Grover (son of Sterling W. Eddings and Lyda E. Hutto) was born about 1889 in Texas; died on 15 Feb 1965 in Sabine County, Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

Herman suffered from tuberculosis, and spent some time at a hospital in San Angelo when his children were still young. His wife and their eldest children, ranging in age from 14 to 10 had to bring in the crops while Herman was hospitalized. James Roland Fuller recounted that "what kept us going beyond our own best efforts was the help and encouragement of the good people of the county, especially their friends and neighbors in Rosevine, who came to help work the crops. Many of them pledged one days work each week, as needed, even while busy with their own crops. With their help and the grace of God we were able to survive."

When Herman returned, he was not able to farm. He traded his animals and equipment to a local store owner as a down payment on the store. He also was hired by the Rosevine school district to pick up and deliver students to the school. Ruth also helped at the store. As the years passed, Herman regained enough strength to operate stores and service stations throughout east and southest Texas.
