    Ocie Felts Gomer

    Ocie Felts Gomer was born Jan. 21, 1905, at Sabinetown, Sabine County. She died on Nov. 27, 2005, at San Augustine. Ocie was the daughter of Thomas Jefferson FELTS and Mattie Bell BURKETT FELTS. She was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley S. GOMER Sr.; her daughter, Helen Gomer SCHLUTER; her parents; and 11 brothers and sisters. Ocie is survived by her two sons, Edgar R. "Bill" GOMER and wife Mae of Salt Lake City, Utah and Stanley S. GOMER Jr. and wife Wanda of Burleson, nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews in Sabine County and elsewhere. Stanley and Ocie were married Dec. 23, 1922, at Hemphill and went to California by train where Stanley was employed by a nursery and Ocie was employed as a cook for the work crew. Later Stanley found employment with the U.S. Post Office in Los Angeles and transferred to Ft. Worth in 1925. They made the trip from California in a Model T Ford, camping out each night with infant daughter, Helen. The trip took three weeks. They lived in Fort Worth until retirement and in 1962 moved back to Sabine County to live on Toledo Bend Lake. Stanley died in 1986 and Ocie continued to live by the lake until she suffered a heart attack and she then moved to Hemphill Care Center and from there to Trinity Rehab and Retirement Community in San Augustine. Ocie was a loving mother and grandmother. She was very independent and self-sufficient, a good fisherman, and a really good cook. She will be missed. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday at the chapel of Starr Funeral Home Inc. in Hemphill. Interment followed at Hemphill City Cemetery. Services were under the direction of Starr Funeral Home Inc in Hemphill.

    Ocie married Stanley Sheldon Gomer on 23 Dec 1922 in Hemphill, Sabine County, Texas. Stanley (son of Joshua Gomer and Winnie Luthenia "Thena" McDaniel) was born on 26 Nov 1902 in Texas; died on 19 Feb 1986 in Tarrant County, Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Helen Gomer Schluter, 78, of Alvarado died Saturday, July 27, 2002, at an Alvarado care center.

    She was born March 12, 1924, in Los Angeles, California, and had been a longtime resident of Fort Worth, where she had moved in 1926.

    Mrs. Schluter was a descendant of several Republic of Texas settlers and was the organizing president of the James F. Gomer Chapter, Daughters of the Republic of Texas, in Hemphill. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Colonial Dames, and several other genealogy clubs and organizations. Her passion was genealogy and she gathered much historical information concerning Sabine County.

    She was married first to Aldon M. Sellers of Bluff Dale, and then to Orra J. Schluter of Baraboo, Wisc., in July 1961.

    She was preceded in death by her husband, Orra J. Schluter.

    Survivors: mother, Ocie Gomer of San Augustine; sons, Michael Sellers and wife Linda of Alvarado and Morris "Rusty" Sellers and wife Ramona of Pineville, La.; daughter, Melinda K. Sellers of Westminister, Colorado; grandchildren, Jacob Morton, Jill Clark, Andrew Sellers, Holly Sellers, Sean Williams, Michael Sellers, and Robert Sellers; brothers Edgar R. "Bill" Gomer and wife Mae of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Stanly S. Gomer, Jr. and wife Wanda of Burleson; great grandchildren, Zachary, Haley, Austin, Logan, and Treyvor; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

    Graveside rites are set for 9:30 am today (Wednesday) at Mount Olivet Memorial Cemetery in Fort Worth.

    Memorials may be made to the Diabetes Association or the Alzheimers Association.
