    Florence Ella Smith

    Florence Ella Rawson Smith, 92, of San Augustine died Friday, March 29, 2002 in San Augustine.

    Mrs. Smith was born Aug. 4, 1909, in Denning as a daughter of the late Ruth Madeline (Moss) and Fisher Rawson. She was a homemaker and a member of the San Augustine Church of Christ.

    Survivors: husband, Kirby Smith of San Augustine; sons and daughters-in-law Larry and Doniece Smith of San Augustine and Phillip and Chris Smith of Tyler; grandchildren, Steve and Sherry Smith of Glenwood Springs, Colorado, Glenn Smith and Krista and Jay Everett, all of Houston, Ryan and Amy Smith of Nacogdoches, Lisa and Cecil Shillings of Huntington, and Sharon and Bobby Barbee of Shelbyville; two sisters, Iris Mathews of San Augustine and Billie Krause of Freeport; and nine great-grandchildren.

    Funeral services were held at 2 pm Monday at the Wyman Roberts Memorial Chapel in San Augustine with Alton Shaw and Joe Hunnicutt officiating. Interment followed at Thomas Cemetery, west of San Augustine.

    Mildred Mathews

    Funeral services for Mildred Lee Rawson Mathews were held Sunday, January 27, 2002 at 2:30 pm at the San Augustine Church of Christ with Mr. Glen Walton officiating. Mrs. Mathews was born July 25, 1911 in Denning, San Augustine County, Texas to James Fisher and Ruth Madeline Moss Rawson and died January 24, 2002 in San Augustine.

    Mildred Rawson Mathews was the wife of the late J.P. (Pete) Mathews, president and founding partner of J.P. Mathews Department Store in San Augustine and five Mathews-Miller Department Stores throughout East Texas. J.P. Mathews Co. in San Augustine, established in 1933 was operated for many years by Pete and Mildred Mathews and Iris and Woodrow Mathews.

    Mrs. Mathews attended Stephen F. Austin State Teachers College and taught at Norwood, Texas before her marriage to J.P. (Pete) Mathews in 1931. Mr. Mathews preceded her in death in 1989. She was a member of the Church of Christ and taught Bible classes in the area for many years.

    She is survived by daughters Rosemary Mathews Blackstock and husband Bernice Blackstock of Lufkin, Texas; Cheryl Mathews Burnett and husband, Dick Burnett of College Station, Texas. Also surviving are grandchildren Beth Blackstock Brown and husband Bob Brown of Houston, Ann Blackstock of Arlington, Laura Lee Burnett of Frisco, Texas; Leslie Burnett Moritz and husband, John Moritz of Arlington, and Richard Pearson Burnett of Arlington. Great grandchildren are Pearson Mathews Brown and Keaton Boyd Brown of Houston, Bryan Richard Burnett, Margaret Cherry Moritz and Anna Laura Moritz of Arlington. Sisters are Florence Rawson Smith and Iris Rawson Mathews of San Augustine and Billie McBride Krause of Freeport, Texas. Her sister, Thelma Rawson Harkrider preceded her in death in 2000.

    Pallbearers were nephews, John Mathews, Mark Mathews, Brad Mathews, J.L. Mathews, Taylor Martin, Larry Smith, and Phillip Smith.

    Mildred married Jewel Pearson "Pete" Mathews in 1931.     Funeral services for Mrs. Thelma Rawson Harkrider of Nacogdoches were held at 2 pm Monday, May 1, 2000 in the Cason Monk-Metcalf Sunset Chapel. Officiating was James W. Adams, Randy Harshbarger, Dean Bullock, George Jones and Mark White, Church of Christ ministers.

    Burial was in Sunset Memorial Park in Nacogdoches under direction of Cason-Monk Metcalf. Mrs. Harkrider died Saturday, April 29 at Memorial Hospital in Nacogdoches after an extended illness. Mrs. Harkrider was a teacher, bookkeeper and homemaker. She lived in San Augustine for a number of years in the 1930s; and taught in the San Augustine County schools. She was born in Denning in San Augustine County, a daughter of James Fisher Rawson and Madeline Ruth Moss.

    She attended Baylor Teachers College and taught for a number of years. She was married to J.D. Harkrider in Beaumont May 26, 1934. She had been a resident of Nacogdoches since 1944. She was a member of the Mound and Starr Church of Christ, and was a Bible Class teacher and worked with her husband in their family business. She was a talented artist.

    Survivors include her husband, J. D. Harkrider of Nacogdoches; two sons David Harkrider of Englewood, Colorado and Robert Harkrider of Orlando, Florida; seven grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by four sisters, Florence (Mrs. Kirby) Smith, Mildred (Mrs. Pete) Mathews, Iris (Mrs. Woodrow) Mathews all of San Augustine and Bill (Mrs. Richard) Krause of Freeport.

    Iris Rawson Mathews

    Funeral services for Iris Rawson Mathews will be held Wednesday, March 1, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. at San Augustine Church of Christ with burial to follow at the Thomas Cemetery.

    Iris Rawson Mathews was born October 1, 1915 in Denning, San Augustine County to James Fisher and Ruth Madeline Moss Rawson and died Monday, February 27, 2006 at home in San Augustine, Texas.

    Iris Rawson Mathews was the wife of the late Woodrow W. Mathews. For many years Iris worked beside her husband Woodrow in the dry good business. J P Mathews Company, the family business, was established in 1933 and was operated for many years by Pete and Mildred Mathews and Woodrow and Iris Mathews. She was a faithful member of the San Augustine Church of Christ.

    She is survived by one daughter, Martha Mathews Butts and husband, John Harvey, of San Augustine; sons, John Richard Mathews and wife, Sharon of San Augustine, William Mark Mathews of Dallas, and Robert Bradley Mathews and wife, Kaye of San Augustine.

    Also surviving are grandchildren, Sylvia Thomason Bay and husband, Scott of Houston, Mary Paige Martin of College Station, Courtney Mathews Saxton and husband, Jimmy of Austin, Emily Jane Mathews of Forth Worth, Shane Rawson Mathews of San Augustine, Luke Ladner Mathews of San Augustine, Jacob Bradley Mathews of San Augustine, William Lee Mathews of San Augustine and Molly Elizabeth Mathews of San Augustine. Great-grandchildren are William Taylor Martin, Mary Kathryn Martin, Wilson Richard Martin, all of College Station, William Anderson Bay, Suzanne Elizabeth Bay, both of Houston, John Saxton and Samuel Saxton, both of Austin.

    She is also survived by one sister, Billie McBride Krause of Nacogdoches and one brother-in-law, J.D. Harkrider of Nacogdoches.

    Arrangements were by Wyman Roberts Funeral Home in San Augustine.

David Harkrider was born on August 11, 1935, in Beaumont, Texas. He died Tuesday, February 3, 2009, at his home in Denver, Colo.

    David was the son of J.D. and Thelma Harkrider. His mother, Thelma, preceded David in death. He is survived by his father, J.D. Harkrider of Nacogdoches; his wife, Elaine, of Denver, Colo.; daughter, Wendy; two sons, Paul and wife, Jana, John and wife, Jenell; and six grandchildren, Ross, J.D., Conrad, Colin, Jordan and Sydney. He is also survived by one brother, Robert, and wife, Arline, of Florida and their children, Beth, John, Amy and Anne. David moved to Nacogdoches in 1944 with his parents.

    He graduated from Nacogdoches High School in 1953 and then attended Abilene Christian College on a football scholarship. While there, he met and later married Elaine Schultz December 14, 1954. David decided while still in high school that he wanted to prepare his life to preach the gospel of Christ. He was gifted with a clear analytical mind that enabled him to become an exceptional scholar and teacher of the Bible and a great debater. After David graduated from Abilene Christian College, he worked with churches in East Texas, California and Alabama. He moved to Denver in 1965 and spent most of his life preaching in Denver. For many years, he conducted a live, call-in radio program that was open to any Bible questions. David loved his family, he loved his church, and he loved young people and sports. He coached youth football and baseball for over forty years. Some of his teams not only won league championships, but also state and national championships.

    Four of his former players went on to play professional football, and two played major league baseball. David will be missed by a loving family and a host of friends.
