Notes:

In the book "Sabine County Historical Sketches and Genealogical Records" by Edna McDaniel White and Blanche Findley (sic) Toole, it was stated that "Theophilus Alexander Harris, b. 1810, m Elizabeth Reeves, b. 1817 in S. C., and came to Texas prior to 1837. He was Justice of Peace in Milam in 1837. He was interested in civic improvement, and when New Hope Baptist Church was organized, the meetings were held in his home. He received a third class land grant in Sabine County." (p. 26).

However, a direct descendant, Elizabeth Pate, epate2@wildblue.net, cautions that it might be possible that Theophilus Harris and Alexander Harris were actually two different men, but likely related in some fashion. Theophilus was said by some to be named William Theophilus. Census records for the family of Alexander and Elizabeth consistently show his name simply as Alex, Alexander or A. Elizabeth also noted that the Alexander and Elizabeth, along with their children, can be found in Talladega County, Alabama at the time of both the 1840 and 1850 federal census enumerations, and that their youngest daughter, Nancy, is also shown on the 1860 Sabine County, Texas census as being born in Alabama ca 1854.

The article stated that Mrs. Faye Harris Mason was dead on arrival at Rusk Memorial Hospital after turning in front of a Milk Truck. The article also noted that she had been a resident of Rusk for 45 years, and member of the First Baptist Church and in the T. E. L. Class. Survivors were sons Byron Mason, Dallas; G. T. Mason, New London and Col. W. H. Mason, Jr. of Pope AFB, North Carolina; daughters, Mrs. E. S. Caldwell, Angleton and Mrs. F. D. Dickey, Fort Worth, sister, Mrs. A. A. Sheriff H.S. Sharp and his deputy, Jim Greer, arrested John Henry Cooper and Clyde Robinson in Rebecca (southern part of San Augustine county) and charged them with assault to murder Dennis Armstrong. Dr. Ellington, who treated Armstrong, said he had a severe head injury. His skull was fractured when he was struck with a shotgun breaking the stock.

Notes:

He married a Rosallie UNKNOWN prior to the 1920 census.

At the time of the 1930 Sabine County census, he was a boarder in the home of Clifford and Annie Reynolds in JP No 8. He was shown as age 32 and divorced, and his occupation was listed as laborer, section hand.

Sam Wilson of Richardson, Texas emailed that Jim Cooper married second Doris Riola Lewis. He understood James Cooper had two sons by his earlier marriage but he only briefly met one of them and didn't remember their names

OZRO LEE PRATT

Ozro Lee Pratt, 90, of Geneva died at 7 p.m., Tuesday, December 2, 2003, at Memorial Medical Center in San Augustine. He was born December 29, 1912, in Sabine County as a son of the late Mary Elizabeth (Cooper) and Hampton Lee Pratt and was a lifelong resident of Sabine County. Pratt was a retired truck driver for Holly Farms and a member of Geneva Baptist Church. Survivors: daughters and sons-in-law, Ann and J.C. CLICK of Geneva and Gloria and Robert McELROY of Elkhart; seven grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Francis Pratt, who died November 23, 2003. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, December 5, 2003 at the chapel of Starr Funeral Home, Inc. in Hemphill with Bro. Eddis SMITH and Bro. Buddy PRATT officiating. Interment followed at Rosevine Cemetery.

A nearly identical obituary was published in the December 10, 2003 Sabine County Reporter. The only added fact was that Orzo and Francis also had four great-great grandchildren.

Bena Harris Gellatly, 98, of Milam died Wednesday, Jan 5, 2000, in San Augustine. Mrs. Gellatly was born July 24, 1901 and had been a lifelong resident of the Milam area. She was a homemaker and a member of New Hope Baptist Church. Survivors; daughters and sons-in-law, Claudia and Dan Polley of Sexton, Merle and Oscar Huff of Milam, and Bonnie and Larry Mobbs of Odessa, a sister, Elaine Brown of San Augustine; eight grandchildren a step-granddaughter; nine great-grandchildren; and four step great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband D.C. Gellatly, and a son, Robert Gellatly. Funeral services were held Jan 7 at New Hope Baptist Church near Milam with Bro. Jim Moss and Bro. Lou Dane officiating. Interment followed at New Hope Cemetery. Starr Funeral Home Inc of Hemphill, Directors.

Elaine Brown

Funeral services for Elaine Brown, 90, of San Augustine were held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 3, 2007 at Liberty Hill Baptist Church in San Augustine. Rev. Mike Hunter and Rev. Buddy Pratt officiated.

Elaine Brown was born July 30, 1917 in the Isla Community in Sabine County to Robert and Abby Ola Mason Harris. She entered into rest October 1, 2007 in Lufkin. Mrs. Brown was the youngest of 11 children and the last surviving member. She was a retired health care giver as well as beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt. She was a member of Liberty Hill Baptist Church and had resided in San Augustine since 1964.

Mrs. Brown leaves a wonderful legacy of dedication to family, caring for everyone else, and her love of God. She enjoyed cooking, flowers, football and gospel music. Elaine was a beautiful, loving and giving person. Her radiating smile and presence will leave an irreplaceable void in our lives.

She is survived by her her son, Charles Dale Brown and wife, Wanda of Longview; daughter, Ann Brown Watson of Lufkin; daughter-in-law, Nancy Brown Metteauer and husband Richard of Nacogdoches; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Hoy Brown; sons, Arlis Ray Brown and Ricky Paul Brown, and son-in-law, Dr. William E. Watson.

Abbie Harvill Harvey, 80, of Lufkin died Sunday, March 12, 1995, at her residence.

She was born Sept. 2, 1914, in Sabine County as a daughter of the late Lawrence and Lorena (Cooper) Harvill and had lived in Angelina County several years. She was a member of the Denman Avenue Baptist Church in Lufkin.

Survivors: husband, Martin Harvey of Lufkin; two daughters, Juanell Beckham of Hemphill and Helen Williams of Pineland; sons and daughters-in-law, Wyman and Louise Tompkins and Jerry and Ruby Tompkins, all of San Augustine, Jimmy and Mary Ann Tompkins of Marietta, Georgia, Tommy and Barbara Tompkins of Longview, and Larry and Annette Tompkins of Lufkin; 17 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel of Starr Funeral Home Inc in Hemphill with Bro. Vance R. Purtell Sr. and Bro. Don R. Falke officiatin. Interment followed at Cooper Cemetery in Geneva.

Grandsons were pallbearers.

Francis "Linda" James followed her soulmate and beloved husband, Kurt Butler, to be in the arms of our Savior February 3, 2023. There she met her mama Arletha "Arlie" Cooper, daddy Jesse Howard James, brother little Cole Harold, and 3 beautiful sisters, Bennie "Neni" Adkins, Betty Lou Foster and Dorothy Juan Hart. What a reunion!

She is survived by her three daughters, Linda (Terry) McCue, Toni (Matt) Wolff, and Angel James Butler; 8 adored grandchildren who know her as mamalynn: Joshua, Wesley, Rachel Lynn, Le'Chelle, Erica, Brooke, Elijah, and Wyatt; as well as many great grandchildren.


Mom was a devoted, mother, wife, mamalynn, aunt, cousin and friend. And to some strangers, their "angel." Mom was always there anytime she was needed. Only a phone call and drive away. She is the strongest person I know. Even in her illness and final earthly days, she declared, "I dont need medicine; Jesus Christ is all I need!" A woman of unwavering faith. We are so thankful she brought us up in the truth. She was our nurture, rock, shield, best friend, confidant, cheerleader and compass. To this day, she is still pointing us to Christ. Amen. Thank you, Mommy! I thank God for you and miss you every second of every day.

A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 22, 2023 at Starr Funeral Home Chapel in Hemphill, Texas.

Claudia Jeanette Polley, 93, of Sexton, Texas passed away Sunday, July 26, 2020 in San Augustine, Texas.

Claudia was born in Milam, Texas on November 14, 1926 to Don C. Gellatly and Bena Norine Harris Gellatly.

Claudia was a superior homemaker and excellent cook. She was a member of the Hemphill High School Class of 1944 and also of Liberty Springs Methodist Church. She liked antiquing with her sister, she loved her family and she loved children. She saw the good in everything and everybody.

She is survived by her son, Don Polley of San Augustine; and sister, Bobbie Pratt of San Augustine. She is also survived and loved by her nieces, nephews, and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dan B. Polley, Jr.; infant son, John Mason Polley; brother, Robert Earl Gellatly; and sister, Merle Huff.

Graveside services will begin at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 28, 2020 in New Hope Cemetery, Milam, Texas under the direction of Starr Funeral Home with Bro. Buddy Pratt officiating.

Merle Gellatly Huff, 82, of Milam, died Wednesday evening in the Twin Lakes Care Center in San Augustine. She was born in Sabine County to Don and Bena Harris Gellatly and has lived in Sabine County all her life. Mrs. Huff was a farmer and rancher and attended the Riverside Church near Milam.

She is survived by her sons; David Huff of Milam, Ted Huff and his wife Janie of Laurel, Mississippi, Tommy Huff and his wife Ashley of Henderson, her daughter Susan Sheard and her husband Ray of Milam, grandchildren; Rylie, Poppy, David and Rachel, and three great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters Claudia Polley of Sexton and Bobbie Pratt of San Augustine.

Visitation will be from 5:30PM until 8:00PM, Thursday, Dec. 20, 2012, in the Starr Funeral Home, 510 Starr St., Hemphill, Texas. Funeral services will be at 11:00AM, Friday, Dec. 21, 2012, in the Starr Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the New Hope Cemetery near Milam.

Joe B. Neal

Joe B. Neal, 70, of San Augustine died Friday, December 3, 1999, in Nacogdoches.

Neal was born Nov. 11, 1929 in Milam as a son of the late Loy P. and Marie (Harris) Neal and had been a longtime resident of San Augustine. He was a cattle rancher and retired bridge construction superintendent.

Survivors: wife, Bessie Coussons Neal of San Augustine; daughters, Josette Newberry GASKIN of Austin and Suzanne Neal and Carol CARTWRIGHT both of San Augustine; sisters, Doris LEDBETTER of Los Angeles, California, Wilma ROBERTS of San Augustine and Joyce BROWN of Milam; a special friend, Pete GARRETT; and five grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Dec. 5 at the First Baptist Church of San Augustine with Bro. Rickey Wood, Bro. Jim Moss and Bro. Fred Dade Jr officiating. Interment followed at Chumley Cemetery near San Augustine.

Kathleen Edith White, 86, of the Gravelhill Community, Sabine County, Texas, passed away Saturday morning in her home. She was born in Sabine County to Judge Noble and Nettie Arthur Harris. Mrs. White held a Masters Degree from Stephen F. Austin University, and spent her life teaching. She taught in the Hemphill Independent School District for over 50 years, and held classes in several other schools and colleges. Mrs. White was a lifetime member of the Gravelhill Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, holding several offices in the Church, a member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, and the National Honor Society.

Mrs. White is survived by her sons: Michael A. White of Killeen, Drew N. White and wife Vicky of Hemphill, Keven White and wife Veronica of Hemphill, seven grandchildren, three great grandchildren, her brother Robert "Bobby" Harris and wife Laverne of Geneva. She is preceded in death by her husband Tommy White, her brother Jackie Harris, her grandson J.T. White and great grandson Ryder Griffin.

Robert Noble Harris, Sr., 83, passed away in the Nacogdoches Medical Center, Friday, July 29, 2016. Robert was born to Judge and Nettie Harris on December 22, 1932 in Sabine County. A lifetime member of the Geneva area, he was teacher, farmer, and rancher. Robert served his country in the Army during the Korean Conflict, and he was a member of the Sexton Masonic Lodge, a Shriner, and was active in various other organizations and committees.

Robert is survived by his wife, LaVerne Harris of Geneva; his two sons, Robert Harris Jr. and wife Stacy of Geneva, and Roy Joe Harris and wife Mary of Geneva; one daughter, Angela Marnette Harris of Geneva; six grandchildren, Holli Lynn Harris, Hannah Lean Johnson, Robert Harris III, Virginia LaVerne Harris, Sarah Elizabeth Harris, and Roy Joe Harris Jr.; and two great grandchildren, Makenna Len Harris-Wallace and Scarlett Jane Harris.

Mrs. Harris, born April 4, 1955, had been a lifelong resident of Sabine County and was a teacher at Brookeland High School. She was a member of Geneva Baptist Church and Delta Kappa Gamma. Survivors: husband, Bobby Harris of Geneva; son, Michael Jason Harris of Geneva; daughter, Julia Elizabeth Nelson of Beckville, parents J.C. and Ann Click of Rosevine, grandparents, Orzo and Frances PRATT of Rosevine; brothers Tommy Click of Pineland and Joey Click of Livingston, a sister, Sandra CROWELL of Nacogdoches; and four grandchildren; Jessica, Kristen, and Joseph HARRIS and Cade NELSON. Funeral Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel of Starr Funeral Home Inc. in Hemphill with Bro. Eddie SMITH and Bro. Brad LANKFORD officiating. Interment followed at Myrtle Springs Cemetery in Geneva.

David Alan Huff, 68, of Milam, Texas passed away Thursday, February 18, 2021 at Sabine County Hospital in Hemphill, Texas.

David was born on July 17, 1952 in Center, Texas to Oscar Thomas Huff and Billie Merle Gellatly Huff. He attended school at Hemphill ISD and later served in the United States Air Force. He worked in the construction business.

He is survived by his son, David Alan Huff, Jr.; daughter, Rachel; brothers, Ted Huff of Mississippi and Tommy Huff of Henderson; and sister, Susan Sheard of Milam.

Cremation arrangements were handled by Starr Funeral Home of Hemphill.

Miss Angela Marnette "Marnie" Harris left the mortal constraints of this earth on November 28, 2021, in Geneva, Texas. Marnie was born on October 1, 1971, in Lufkin Texas.

Marnie is now with her father, and the only person who had his bluff in on her, Robert N. Harris Sr. Moreover, she has now reassumed the copilot position with her mother, LaVerne Droddy Harris. At their peak, it was not uncommon to have a Marnie and LaVerne sighting ? even in New York City!

Marnie is survived by: Robert N. Harris Jr.(brother) and wife Stacy Archer Harris and Roy Joseph Harris (brother) and wife Mary Brackin Harris. She leaves behind nephews and nieces: Holli Harris King, Hannah Harris Johnson, Robert N. Harris III, Virginia Harris Standley, Sarah Harris Nichols, and Roy Joseph Harris Jr. Additionally, Marnie was the proud great aunt for six great-nieces and three great-nephews.

Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 1, 2021, at Wyman Roberts Funeral Home, located at 316 W. Columbia Street in San Augustine, Texas.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 1, 2021, at the Wyman Roberts Memorial Chapel with Dr. Karen Jones officiating. Interment will follow at McMahans Chapel Cemetery, Geneva.

Pallbearers: Robert N. Harris III, Roy Joe Harris, Justin King, Rex Johnson, J.D. Standley, and Jared Nichols.

Valton Gayle Beckham, 61, of Beaumont passed away, Thursday, in the St. Elizabeth Hospital, Beaumont, Texas. Valton was born in Pineland, Texas, to James Valton and Juanell Tompkins Beckham.

He owned and operated Beckham's Hardware store in Hemphill for many years before moving to Beaumont. One of Valton's hobbies was playing the drums, which he started playing in H.I.S.D with the "Little Green Band" and enjoyed playing the rest of his life. He was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church in Beaumont.

Valton is survived by his wife Sherry Beckham of Beaumont, his sons: Bradley Beckham and wife Amy of Nacogdoches, Rodger Maples, Jr. and wife Carrie of Alvarado, Floyd Maples of Bryan, his daughter Rita Marie Spears of Livingston, his grandchildren; Blake Beckham, Josie Beckham, Matthew Maples, Rebecca Maples, Rhonda Alexander, Jack Campbell, and Taylor Campbell, three great grandchildren and numerous aunts and uncles. Valton was preceded in death by his parents James Valton Beckham and Juanell Tompkins Beckham.

Visitation will be from 4:00pm until 6:00pm, Sunday, November 6, 2016, in the Starr Funeral Home, 510 Starr St., Hemphill, Texas. Funeral services will be at 11:00am, Monday, November 7, 2016, in the Starr Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the Cooper Harris Cemetery, Geneva, Texas. There will also be a memorial service Wednesday, November 9, 2016, at 11:00am in the Wesley United Methodist Church in Beaumont, Texas.

Sara Katlyn Click

Sara Katlyn Click, 16, of Pineland died Friday March 16, 2007, in a traffic accident in Nacogdoches County. Miss Click was born Sept. 26, 1990, Nacogdoches County and had lived in Pineland for several years and was a member of First Baptist Church. She was a sophomore at Hemphill High School where she was a majorette in the Hornet Marching Band and participated in UIL activities. Survivors: parents, Tommy and Tanyia CLICK of Pineland, sisters, Emily CLICK and Anna CLICK, both of Pineland, and grandparents, J.C. and Ann CLICK of Geneva, James and Janice YOUNG of Gilmer and Henry and Helen ADAMS of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Funeral services are set for 11 a.m. today (Wednesday) at First Baptist Church Life Center in Pineland, with Bro. Don Falke, Bro. Ron Whittle, and Bro. Gordon Knight officiating. Interment will follow at Myrtle Springs Cemetery in Geneva. Services are under the direction of Starr Funeral Home Inc in Hemphill.

John Thomas "J. T." White, died Thursday, Feb. 26, 2009, near Hemphill.

J. T. was born on Nov. 14, 1990 in Lufkin and had lived near Hemphill in the Gravelhill community. He was a senior at Hemphill High School and a member of the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church in Grevelhill.

J. T. is survived by his father, Keven White and his wife Kimberly of Gravelhill; his mother, Charlene Howard and her husband Doug of Nacogdoches; great grandparents, Mildred and Jesse Travis of Hemphill; grandmother, Kathleen White of Gravelhill; grandparents Wendy and Kirk Travis of Richmond, VA; three sisters, Chris White and Brianna Smith of Gravelhill, and Candace Howard of Nacogdoches; and four brothers, Zachery Johnson of Beaumont, Jared, Joshua and Carl Howard, all of Nacogdoches.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 28 in the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church,. Interment followed in the Gravelhill cemetery.

Services were under the direction of Starr Funeral Home Inc. in Hemphill.
