Stabbed 41 Times, S. A. Woman Dies
Tavern Owner Ice Pick Victim
A 48-year-old woman tavern operator, slain about 1 p.m. Thursday, was stabbed about 41 times ina death struggle, Dr. Robert Hausman, county medical examiner, revealed late Thursday.
The woman, Hallie Bigham, was found about 1:30 p.m. on the floor of Hallie's Place, 4234 Culebra Road.
Police Thursday night were looking for a Seguin man, reportedly a regular customer of the tavern.
Hausman said the woman was stabbed 31 times in the chest and abdomen and bout 10 times in the arms.
He said the woman, who reportedly lived in the rear of the tavern also was chocked and cut one on the chin.
Police theorized the death struggle started behind the counter where a pool of blood ran about 15 feet from the counter to the spot where the woman's body was found.
Hausman said the wound apparently was inflicted by an ice pick or some other long, slender weapon.
One of the wounds's fractured the woman's right wrist, Hausman said.
A broken bottle found on the tavern floor was believed to have inflicted the four inch cut on the woman's chin.
Audrey L. Real, a service stateion operator whos lives at 1030 John Page Dr. discoverd the woman's body at 1:30 p.m. when he went to the tavern.
Real, 47, after seeing the woman's body near the front door of the tavern, notified Mrs. Dora Britz, 4221 Culebra Road, owner of the tavern. She notified police.
Police picked up five persons but released them after questioning.
They ruled out robbery in the murder after finding $118.37 still in the cash register.
The February 11, 1960 issue of the same newspaper, also page one, had an article titled "Seguin Man Tells About Fatal Fight: Guadalupe Co. Sherrif Arrests 18-Year Old" The article stated that Juan Valdez was arrested shortly after noon on February 10 as he and several friends were on their way to a movie. Valdez stated that the struggle which ended with Hallie Bigham's death started when she demanded $5 from him. Valdez said her refused to pay, and the woman called him a "dirty Mexican." He slapped her across the face with a bottle, and she raced from the table at which they had been drinking and grabbed in ice pick.

Copied from the Facebook Group, Farm Road 1-From one end to the other, written by Ronald Barlow:
Happy 100th Birthday, Mammaw!
One Hundred years ago today, on January 27, 1916, Ina Mae Russell (1916-2001) was born at home in LaMerle, Texas, near the Santa Fe Railroad about halfway between Pineland and Bronson.
Her parents were Creed Thomas Russell (1888-1925) and Lora Lee Warner Russell Forse (1894-1983).
Creed worked at the sawmill in LaMerle, that belonged to J.R. Harris and R.W. Henry, for a few years, before moving the family to Jasper, so he could work for the Texas Highway Department constructing Highway 8.
Ina Mae attended school at Plainview, Jasper and Bronson.
She was nine years old, when her father was shot in Jasper on November 1, 1925.
Creed Russell died four days later, leaving Lora a widow, with five children between the ages of three months and eleven years.
Lora Russell moved the family back to Bronson, where her family could help with survival.
Three years after Creed Russell's murder, when her mother married W.C. "Bill" Forse, of the Plainview Community, in 1929, her teacher, Charlie Forse, became her stepbrother.
Six years later, the family was complete with the birth of LaNell.
Her siblings were:
C.L. Russell (1914-1974)
Ina Mae Russell Barlow (1916-2001)
Wilson Roy "Billy" Russell (1918-1961)
Erma Moselle Russell Foster (1921-1972)
Leva Isabelle "Belle" Russell McLemore (1925-2007)
LaNell Forse Crow Bragg (1934-2015)
Ina Mae married Adron Horace "Dick" Barlow (1907-1987) on July 14, 1932.
Ina Mae was 16 and Dick was 24.
For the next 55 years, she was never away from his side for more than a day or two, except for the years during World War II, when Dick worked at the shipyard in Orange, and Ina Mae stayed at Pineland so the kids could stay in school.
Even then, Dick made it home on weekends.
Ina Mae was a professional Homemaker.
She had to be.
In their 55 years of marriage, she and Pappaw lived in at least ten different homes.
Ina Mae often said that "when the rapture comes, I will probably be in the middle of moving" and all their worldly possessions would be left in a ditch somewhere along the way.
She gave birth to Lamar Barlow at home, just east of Strickland Crossing on March 24, 1933.
Seventeen months later, Lora Beth was born at their next home, just southwest of Strickland Crossing on August 24, 1934.
Two years later, Wendall Joe (my Daddy) was born at their next home, in the Slip-Up-N-Hitch Community between Strickland Crossing and Plainview, near the Lott Cemetery, on September 1, 1936.
Two-and-a-half years later, Mary Virginia was born in their first home near Bear Creek, northwest of Pineland on March 22, 1939.
In less than six years, Ina Mae had set up home in four different places, while bearing four children.
That was the end of the children...but not the moving.
Just a year or two later the "Stagner House" at Bear Creek burned down.
They moved into a smaller sharecropper house next door, which I was raised in, and my mother still lives in.
Dick added on to the house to accommodate the family of six.
Ina Mae had a milk cow, chickens, and a garden, as well as a growing herd of beef cattle to tend to, as Dick farmed cotton and cut railroad ties.
With his crosscut saw, kerosene sling bottle, axe, broad axe, iron wedge, gluts, and wooden gauge, Dick could work circles around most men, turning out more crossties than anybody around.
They had no running water, no electricity, no telephone, no inside plumbing, no refrigerator...not even an icebox.
Ina Mae had a wood cook stove, kerosene lamps, a flatiron, a mud fireplace, an outhouse, a smokehouse and a corn crib.
Dick butchered his own hogs and the family bunked sweet potatoes, shelled peas and beans, shucked corn, cut okra, pulled squash, cucumbers and watermelons...and never went hungry.
Ina Mae canned pork sausage, vegetables, fruit, chow-chow, pickles, jelly and preserves.
Store-bought "Light Bread" was a rare treat, so Ina Mae made biscuits and cornbread every day.
Temple Lumber Company's sawmill whistle in Pineland could clearly be heard from 2-3 miles away and served as the Barlow's and other farm folks signal for lunch.
Life was simple...and good.
The Great Depression had very little impact on folks that lived off the land and had nothing in the bank.
During World War II, when Dick went off to work in the shipyard, Ina Mae and the kids moved into the "Conner House," a mile-or-so up the road, closer to the highway, to be closer to town with no man in the house.
Ina Mae never learned to drive and never wanted to.
Dick, as all Barlow men seem to be, was fascinated by cars and anything mechanical.
About 1945, they got electricity, and hung one bare light bulb in each room of the house, with a pull switch.
Soon after, Ina Mae had a refrigerator and an electric iron, which really changed her life.
In 1946, Dick and Arvil White bought a sawmill and set it up on a pice of land on the east side of US 96, a mile-or-so north of Pineland, where Pat Bradberry now lives.
Soon after, with lumber cut at his sawmill, Dick built a new three bedroom home and moved the family in next door to the sawmill.
Marie Beauchamp McBride now lives in this house.
Besides the sawmill, Dick sold used cars in front of the home, did carpentry work, bought and sold real estate, ran beef cattle on Bear Creek, and worked on everyone else's cars.
Ina Mae and Dick were instrumental in moving Martin Chapel Church from the Martin Cemetery, near Bear Creek, to a new location on the highway, where they renamed it Bethel Chapel Missionary Baptist Church.
They were both baptized in Allen's Pond near their home on 96.
Bethel Chapel had "preaching" only twice a month, but had it on both Saturday night and Sunday morning.
Sunday School was conducted every Sunday.
In 1954 or 1955, Dick built a combination service station/grocery store between his mother's home and the Garage he had with L.P. Knight and Ivy Jacks.
Ina Mae and Dick ran the store for several years before selling it to Dick's brother, Boob Barlow.
The kids all graduated from Pineland High School between 1951 and 1958.
In about 1962, they sold everything and moved to Arkansas.
Ina married Adron Horace "Dick" Barlow on 14 Jul 1932. Adron (son of William Washington Barlow and Lizzie Elmira Morris) was born on 3 Sep 1907 in Texas; died on 23 Dec 1987; was buried in Bethel Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery, Pineland, Sabine County, Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

231. | Wendall Joe Barlow (194.Ina5, 105.Lora4, 43.Sarah3, 5.William2, 1.Sarah1) was born on 1 Sep 1936 in Sabine County, Texas; died on 24 Oct 2013 in Sabine County, Texas; was buried in Bethel Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery, Pineland, Sabine County, Texas. Notes:
Obituary, copied from his FindAGrave memorial page
Wendall Joe Barlow, 77, of Pineland, died at 6:00 Thursday evening, October 24, 2013, at his home on the Charlie Forse Road, north of Pineland. He was born September 1, 1936 at home in the Slip-Up-and-Hitch Community (between the Plainview and Strickland Crossing Communities) in Sabine County, Texas to Adron Horace "Dick" Barlow (1907-1987) and Ina Mae Russell Barlow (1916-2001).
The family soon moved to a home northwest of Pineland, on the Bear Creek Farm that Wendall has continued farming throughout his lifetime. Wendall grew up on this farm, at his father's sawmill and garage, and working on used cars that his father bought and sold.
He attended all twelve grades at Pineland I.S.D. schools in Sabine County, graduating from Pineland High School in May, 1954, ranked 9th in a class of nine graduates. His favorite class was Mr. B.A. Reid's Agriculture classes and he supported and encouraged FFA and 4-H activities for the remainder of his life to benefit like-minded boys and girls.
From 1954 to 1958, he roughnecked on drilling rigs, both onshore and offshore, mostly in South Louisiana, and worked in all areas of drilling and production.
From 1958 to 1960, he did carpentry and concrete work on plants and dwellings.
From 1960 to 1963, he worked in Pineland as an automotive mechanic with his father, Dick Barlow, L.P. Knight and Ivy Jacks, in their garage on Highway 96.
From 1963 to 1967, he operated heavy equipment while building the Sam Rayburn Reservoir Dam, the Six Mile Bridge, the Ayish Bayou Bridge, and other highway projects in the area. He ran bulldozers, draglines, road maintainers, and scrapers and performed finish work on many of these jobs.
In 1967, he hired on at Magasco with United Gas Pipeline Company, and retired from this company in 1991. During that period, he worked as a pipeliner, compressor helper, construction inspector, Magasco Compressor Station Superintendent, and supervised construction and overhaul of various plants, facilities and pipelines all over the south. He loved the old Cooper compressor engines at Magasco, which operated from 1924 until the 1990s.
Following retirement from United Gas Pipeline (now Boardwalk/GulfSouth), he continued the same line of inspection work as an independent consultant. He worked all over Louisiana and Texas, sometimes working as many as 350 days in a year. After spending several years consulting in South Texas, he served as chief inspector for the construction of three new pipeline compressor stations for Boardwalk/Gulf South in Mobile, Alabama and Sherman, Texas, completing the last one in Sherman in 2009, at the age of 72.
In retirement, he continued running beef cattle on his farms around Pineland, owned and managed rental property in Pineland, continued his community service involvement and established the Sabine County Cowboy Church.
He was an uncommon man who lived to work and serve his God, family and community. He worked, almost unceasingly, from daylight to dark, on the job, at the farm, in the church and in the community, and could work circles around men half his age. He was a friend to all and a benefactor to anyone that truly needed help. He never met a stranger and earned friendship, trust and respect quickly. He loved children and children loved him.
He loved local history and everything about rural Deep East Texas. He had a memory for details, people, places and things that few could match, if any. He never missed a Pineland Day, a school reunion or a family reunion.
He was a man of his word and would go to whatever lengths were necessary to keep his word?and he admired the same in others. He despised cruelty, waste and laziness, and devoted every waking minute to doing his job, maintaining his farm, improving his cattle herd, compiling his collections, and finding ways to help his neighbors.
Hundreds of individuals and families in Sabine County have benefitted from his concern and assistance in times of need. He bailed the friendless from jail, made loans to those who could never repay, and found ways to give to widows and orphans through his labor and talents. He was a frugal man concerning his own needs and comfort, but would give the shirt off his back to a family member, friend or stranger in need.
He served on the boards of several organizations in Pineland and Sabine County.
His retirement, which was forced by his cancer, was spent in planning and providing for the establishment of the Sabine County Cowboy Church. His gifts of land, buildings, furnishings, equipment, labor and love made this mission possible.
On October 5, the Pineland Service Club recognized Wendall as the Citizen of the Year at Pineland Day 2013 in recognition of his many years of service to the community through Pineland Day, Pineland Clean Sweep, Business Startup Assistance, Church Establishment, FFA and 4-H activities, and other charitable deeds and philanthropy for the citizens of the Pineland and West Sabine community.
He wanted his philanthropy to be anonymous, and if it became public, he humbly diverted the praise to others, or shyly changed the subject. He asked for little in return?and what he did ask for was intended to make life better for the recipient.
Wendall is survived by his sons; Rev. Randall Barlow and his wife Pauline of Hull, England, Ronald Barlow of Pineland, and Michael Barlow and his wife Kerie of Stonewall, Louisiana, his daughter; Pam Abdallh and her husband Yousef of Silsbee, five grandchildren (Matt Barlow, Yasmine Abdallh, Ginger Barlow Wallace, Erica Barlow and Cash Barlow) and five great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother; Lamar Barlow and wife Betty of Brookeland, and sisters; Lora Beth Barlow Wright and husband Carl of Houston and Mary Virginia Barlow Edgar and husband Wallace of Texarkana, Arkansas.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM until 1:00 PM, Saturday, October 26, 2013, at the Sabine County Cowboy Church in Pineland, with a meal being served at 11:30. Funeral services will closely follow at 1:00 PM, Saturday, October 26, 2013, at the Sabine County Cowboy Church in Pineland. Officiating will be his son Randall Barlow, his brother-in-law Wallace Edgar and J.P. Mills, pastor of the Sabine County Cowboy Church. Burial will follow in the Bethel Chapel Cemetery in Pineland. 253. | Ronald Earl Barlow (231.Wendall6, 194.Ina5, 105.Lora4, 43.Sarah3, 5.William2, 1.Sarah1) was born on 2 Aug 1960 in Jasper County, Texas; died on 26 Aug 2021 in Sabine County, Texas; was buried in Bethel Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery, Pineland, Sabine County, Texas. Notes:
Wrote a history/genealogy column for the Sabine County Reporter, later formeed to a facebook group of the same name, "Farm Road 1 - From one end to another."
He died of COVID, and the tribute below was posted on the SABINE COUNTY REPORTER facebook page on August 26, 2021, along with a photo.
July 22, 2021. Breakfast was busy that Thursday, but he was who I needed to talk to most. Pineland Day was on the horizon and I wanted to get as many details as I could. He gave me a date and invited me over to his house where he had been collecting memorabilia of Pineland Day for years- maybe for that museum he often talked about. But before we could get too deep into what was happening in October, Ronald wanted to talk about a new cooperative program through 4H that would make the lives of Sabine County youth 1000x better. Horseback riding, archery, shooting, piano, photography, even Tai Kwan Do- and so many more activities. He had businesses and banks onboard and, of course, his beloved Texas A&M was contributing as well. He had most of the logistics worked out and like so many times before, I was blown away by his skills of team-building, organization and productivity. The man could get a job done and done well - better than any I've ever known. We talked for nearly two hours and he was a bit late getting out the door for his weekend conference at College Station. We agreed to a Pineland Day tour after breakfast the following week and he was off.
On Tuesday, as I was sitting in the dentist chair, my phone rang and his deep voice drawled out, "Mrs. Johanna, this is a courtesy call. I left Aggie Land this morning and stopped to take a test because I had a little fever. And the dern thing was positive. I didn't feel bad until Saturday morning, but wanted you to be able to tell the breakfast crew that it was a possibility I had it Thursday."
Inconvenient. That was my initial thought. We had plans and I had gotten a brief glance at his schedule and knew he was all booked up. When were we going to be able to get together again? We chatted for a bit and I prayed for him and told him I'd check in in a couple of days.
Friday he emailed me all the details he had for the new 4 H plan. If you knew him, you knew he was a way above average and competent writer. But on this day he let me know I needed to write it. He didn't feel well and said the COVID packed a punch and he was going to try to rest.
On Monday, I sent him the story and he said it was accurate and we could print and distribute. It ran in the Aug. 4 edition.
I assumed he would get over it quickly, no big deal. And I was very wrong. When I learned he had been hospitalized, I text right away. "18th day of symptoms, 11th day in the hospital," he assured me he was getting better everyday. We talked a few more times before his condition worsened and then Mrs. Carolyn would respond instead.
As it became evident he was in the fight of his life, more than ever, I petitioned God for his physical, earthly healing daily, almost constantly. And to be 100% transparent, I'm struggling with His answer being no. Because I love this man. I have admired and looked up to him for 23 years, and I'm not ready to let him go and without a doubt, many of you feel the same. That's ok. God is big enough to handle all of our sorrow, anger and doubt. His grace is always sufficient.
It's Thursday, one month has passed since this photo was taken, and breakfast is being prepared, because that's all I know to do. Keep going. Support one another. Pray. Take care of Sabine County and the Pineland that he loved, in anyway we can. He served so many here for decades. We will honor him and remember.
