Distressing Accident
Capt. Stirling C. M'LEMORE, of this county, was last evening dangerously wounded by the accidental discharge of a rifle. While sitting upon the fence with his gun upon his knees, it slipped, when on catching it suddenly and drawing the muzzle toward him it fired at half bent. The ball, we are informed by the surgeon, entered a little below the left breast, passed the cavity and lodged in the point of his left shoulder...He was living this morning, but his life is considered to be in imminent danger.

6. | Martha McLemore (1.Rebecca1) was born between 1793 and 1795 in North Carolina; and died. Notes:
Melba Gene McLemore shows that she married James R. BROWN.
Foide Williams, in a post to the McLemore Family Genealogy Forum, writes that: "The 1820 census of Lincoln Co, Tn (pg 14) shows Sterling C. McLemore and (pg 30) Signer Allen (who married Rebecca McLemore), Benjamin Wright (who married Hannah McLemore), James R. Brown (who married Martha McLemore), and Joel McLemore. (Research):Census Listing:
Melba Gene McLemore thinks it POSSIBLE the census listing b

7. | Hannah McLemore (1.Rebecca1) was born between 1794 and 1800 in North Carolina. Notes:
Foide Williams, in a post to the McLemore Family Genealogy Forum, writes that: "The 1820 census of Lincoln Co, Tn (pg 14) shows Sterling C. McLemore and (pg 30) Signer Allen (who married Rebecca McLemore), Benjamin Wright (who married Hannah McLemore), James R. Brown (who married Martha McLemore), and Joel McLemore. These are all from Fayette Co, KY and apparently traveled together to Lincoln Co, TN."
http://www.jenforum.org/mclemore/messages/768.html
According to "Mt. Hermon Baptist Church, Lincoln County, Tennessee" by Betty Via, Hannah Wright was an 1833 constituting member, wife of Benjamin Wright; on the 1840 membership list; granted letter n.d; joined by letter, June, 1844; on 1852 membership list. A footnote after her name indicates that Hannah's maiden name appears to be McLemore, [but that] research still inconclusive.
Julia Molitz (jmolitz@cox.net), a member of the "Chesnut Ridge Cousins" genealogy study group indicated that she could not find Benjamin and Hannah any place on the 1850 or 1860 census, but did find a Benjamin and Mary H. WRIGHT on the 1850 TN Census and the same family on the 1860 Berry Co., MO census, but did not know if this family was the same one that lived in Lincoln County (now Moore County), Tennessee.
Julia further indicates that census records show that Benjamin and Hannah had about ten children, seven girls and three boys, but that the identity of all the children is not yet conclusive.
Citing the book "Mt. Hermon Baptist Church, Lincoln County, Tennessee" by Betty Via, she suspects that the "Mary [Wright] that was received by experience, September 1855; granted letter, August 1859 must have been a daughter of Benjamin and Hannah. Rebecca WRIGHT must have been a daughter of Benjamin and Hannah as well." The book itself notes that an Elizabeth Wright, on the 1852 church membership list, is also believed to have been one of the daughters of Benjamin and Hannah.
Hannah married Benjamin Wright on 19 Sep 1814 in Fayette County, Kentucky. Benjamin was born about 1794 in Lincoln County, Tennessee; died after 1840 in Lincoln County, Tennessee. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
Children:
- 30. James Wright was born about 1816 in Kentucky; died about 1855 in Mississippi.
- 31. William P. Wright was born after 1816 in Kentucky; died after 1860.
- 32. Joel Wright was born about 1818 in Tennessee; died about 1866 in Indiana.
- 33. Maybe Julia Ann Wright was born about 1834 in Tennessee; died after 1870 in Marian, Williamson County, Illinois.

8. | Probably Wright McLemore, Of Arkansas (1.Rebecca1) was born about 1800 in North Carolina; died about 1849 in Jefferson County, Arkansas. Notes:
Melba Gene McLemore noted that in both the April 7, 1824 and July 5, 1826 issue of THE VILLAGE MESSENGER, published in Fayetteville, Lincoln County, Tennessee, a Wright McLEMORE was listed among those for whom dead letters were being held at the Fayetteville Post Office.
This makes him very likely a brother of Joel and Sterling McLemore, whose families were in Fayetteville, Tennessee during this same time frame.
More information can be found in the notes section of "Wright McLemore of Arkansas", born ca 1800, North Carolina.
|
9. | Rebecca Elizabeth McLemore (1.Rebecca1) was born about 1802 in North Carolina; and died. Notes:
Melba Gene McLemore notes that she married Signer/Signor ALLEN. 16. | Georgiana McLemore (3.Joel2, 1.Rebecca1) was born on 15 Sep 1834 in Tennessee; and died. Notes:
She was said to have married Frank BROWN on January 1, 1856, likely in Austin, Travis County, Texas. Melba Gene McLemore has corresponded with Anne GILBERT (lgilbert2@earthlink.net AND lgilbert@bigfoot.com) about this family. Apparently this family eventually ended up in Lockhart, Texas.
Georgiana married Frank Brown on 1 Jan 1856 in Austin, Travis County, Texas. Frank was born on 26 Jun 1833 in Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee; died on 27 Jan 1913 in Austin, Travis County, Texas; was buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Austin, Travis County, Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

21. | Possibly William McLemore (4.Abner2, 1.Rebecca1) was born between 1818 and 1835; and died. Notes:
Melba McLemore thinks Abner may be the father of the William McLemore, born between 1832 and 1825 in Tennessee, and who lived in Mississippi near Abner and Sterling McLemore at the time of the 1870 and 1880 Federal Census enumerations.
There was another William McLemore, born between 1818 and 1821, who was living in Lawrence County, Alabama at the time of the 1860 and 1870 Federal Census enumerations. Abner McLemore was a former resident of Lawrence County, Alabama. At the time of the 1860 census, his occupation was shown as shoemaker, which is the same occupation Abner McLemore reported at the time of the 1860 census.
Both William's are good fits as possible sons of Abner McLemore, and at this time it is not known which one of them, if either, are actually his son. Both are indexed in these files with their families.
PLEASE EMAIL IF YOU CAN HELP SOLVE THIS MYSTERY.

23. | Lucretia Jane McLemore (4.Abner2, 1.Rebecca1) was born between 1826 and 1830 in Alabama; died about 1903 in Chickasaw County, Mississippi. Notes:
Melba Gene McLemore has her date of birth as September, 1830 (based on the 1900 census enumeration), however this is several years younger than the ages shown on the earlier, 1850 and 1860, enumerations.

25. | Mariah A. McLemore (4.Abner2, 1.Rebecca1) was born about 1833 in Alabama; died about 1901. Notes:
It is assumed that Mariah is the daughter of Abner McLemore, due to her proximity to Abner's sons on the 1860 through 1900 Calhoun County, Mississippi census, and the fact that a McLemore was living with her family in 1880. However the transcription of her marriage record shows her last name as Lemon, and further shows her as being born in South Carolina. Therefore more work should be done to proof or disprove this connection.
Another Mariah McLemore could instead be Abner's daughter. This second Mariah McLemore was born ca 1835 and married Charles Pinckney Campbell on 6 Oct 1861 in Lawerence County, Mississippi. The Mariah that married Charles Campbell is an ancestor of Lisa Coker Thigpen. (LisaHeb138@aol.com).

28. | Eliza Jane McLemore (5.Sterling2, 1.Rebecca1) was born on 6 Dec 1819 in Lincoln County, Tennessee; died on 23 May 1883 in Texas; was buried in Honey Creek Cemetery, Hico, Hamilton County, Texas. Notes:
In Betty Via's book about the Mt. Hermon Baptist Church of Lincoln County, Tennesse, an Eliza Wright, member 1840, joined by letter, June 1844, is listed. Betty notes that this Eliza is believed to be the wife of James Wright.
Douglas Wright shows that after James died, she married second, around 1860, Jack Thompson (1815-1870). Melba Gene McLemore reports that Jack was also said to be buried in Honey Creek Cemetery, but if so his headstone is long gone as it can not be seen in this cemetery.
Melba Gene McLemore provided the following excerpt of a letter from her ancestor, Keton Jones McLemore, that relates to Eliza Jane McLemore Wright Thompson:
Keton's Letter March 1, 1870 (Partial)
:
"If you hear from Thad, don't fail to let me know immediately, --- I rec'd. a letter from your cousin Jack yesterday, he was then at your cousin Eliza Thompsons in Travis Co. & I have just answered his letter, directed my letter to Onion Creek, care of Sterling J. Wright, and if Jack should be at your home, as he spoke something in his letter of coming there, you can inform him of that fast."

29. | Sterling J. McLemore (5.Sterling2, 1.Rebecca1) was born on 29 Dec 1822 in Lincoln County, Tennessee; died on 20 Jun 1896 in Coffee County, Tennessee. Notes:
S. J. McLemore, a pioneer of Tullahoma, was born in Lincoln County, Tenn., December 29, 1822, and is the son of S. J. (sic) and Martha (Whitaker) McLemore, natives of North Carolina. The father died in 1825 and the mother in 1880. Our subject reared on the farm, remained there until his marriage to Margaret J. Ward in 1841, when he removed to Nashville and entered the produce business. In 1851 he came to Tullahoma. He sold goods until the civil war and after the close of the same entered the livery business. In 1876 he began merchandising, continuing at that until January, 1886. His wife died in 1881. In 1883 he married Ruthea J. Gross, a native of McMinnville. By his first wife our subject has six children: William H., John C., S. J., Lamyra, Henrietta and Laura. Our subject is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, and his wife of the Christian Church. He is a member of Tullahoma Lodge, No. 101, I. O. O. F., of which he is the only surviving charter member. He has served several times as mayor and alderman of Tullahoma. He is a Democrat.

30. | James Wright (7.Hannah2, 1.Rebecca1) was born about 1816 in Kentucky; died about 1855 in Mississippi. Notes:
James Wright was a member of the Mt. Hermon Baptist Church in Lincoln County, Tennessee by 1840.
Middle name sometimes shown as HARRISON.
Melba Gene McLemore found a Power of Attorney from James Wright to William H. Ragsdale, proven by oath of John WILLY and John ISOM, GI Cty., TN Cty. Ct. Min. p 201.
Will Johnson shows him, apparently in error, as dying after 1870 in Illinois. This contradicts the research of both Douglas Wright and Melba Gene McLemore, who both show his death much earlier, Doug Wright shows he died in Hamilton County, Texas whereas Melba Gene shows he died in Mississippi. He is not listed with his wife and children at the time of the 1860 Rusk County, Texas census.

33. | Maybe Julia Ann Wright (7.Hannah2, 1.Rebecca1) was born about 1834 in Tennessee; died after 1870 in Marian, Williamson County, Illinois. Notes:
Julia Molitz (jmolitz@cox.net), a member of the "Chesnut Ridge Cousins" genealogy study group, notes that "Julyan must have been a dau of Benjamin and Hannah WRIGHT for she and her husband John SWAN appear next to her brother Joel WRIGHT on the 1860 Lawrence CO. MO Census."
Mt. Hermon Baptist Church, Lincoln County, Tennessee" by Betty Via also notes that Julyan appears to be a relation, perhaps a daughter, of Benjamin and Hannah Wright as she is always listed with them. The book shows that she was rec'd by experience, August, 1851; married (Swan?) before August, 1859; granted letter, August 1859, letter was called for by Brother Wright.
Melba Gene McLemore does not agree with this conclusion, believing that Julia Ann is NOT a daughter of Benjaming Wright and Hannah McLemore.

He married Dilla SHAW. They were the parents of 14 children. They raised four sons, Wisey Ernest, Buford Earl, Cicero Hazel, and Wayland. Another son, Audry Eugene died at the age of one year. Nine daughters survived and married: Odessa Fanita ATKINSON, Ruth Susie ALLISON, Winnie Mae STARNES, Adeline Magie PUGH, Maggie Lee ALLEN, Opal Joe BELCHER GRIMLAND, Rachel LANGE, Ruby Nell WALKER, and Bobbie Joe HERN.
In 1996, the family celebrated the 50th anniversary of the first K.J. WRIGHT family reunion, from July 5 through July 7 in Breckenridge at the Pugh Ranch. At that time, there were 326 direct descendants of Keaton and Dilla. The first family reunion was held at the Wright home in Rochester, Haskell County, when their son, Cicero was coming home from the service in 1946.

Melba Howell Colwell, a granddaughter, said that her grandmother was a remarkable woman. After her husband died young, leaving her widowed with four small children, she worked to support her family. She had attended college and was an educated and articulate woman, becoming postmaster in Carlton, Texas.
She was very independent and active throughout her life, walking six blocks to and from the grocery store to do her weekly shopping well into her 90's. Her doctor eventually insisted she take a cab.
Melba also remembers her as a wonderful cook.

145. | Bertha B. "Bertie" Herrington (77.Perlina4, 28.Eliza3, 5.Sterling2, 1.Rebecca1) was born on 27 Sep 1884 in Hamilton County, Texas. Notes:
Melba Gene McLemore had two seperate daughters, with similar names and birthdates, listed: Bertha Bates Herrington, born 29 Jan 1884 and Bertha Bea Herrington, born 27 Sept 1884. This would leave only nine months between their births.
The 1900 Erath County has only one daughter around this age and with a similar name, "Bertie B. Herrington Dtr W F Sept 1883 16 S Tx Miss Tx." As the census further notes that Perlina was the mother of 7 total children, all still living, it appears that there was only one Bertha/Bertie B. Herrington.
Based on the above census information, it is assumed that the September month of birth shown by Melba is more likely to be accurate than the January birth month.
She was said to have married Robert N. GILLEY on 6 Jun 1909 in Erath County, and be the mother of Ruth GILLEY. Beth Herrington has her as the mother of eight children in total.
Her dates of death vary as well (shown as 12 Mar 1952, 25 Sept 1957 and 27 Sept 1957). She is said to be buried in Sunger Cemetery, Denton County, Texas.

Melba Gene McLemore notes that she was a nurse and that she voted in the Hamilton County, Texas 1937 election.

147. | John Wesley Herrington (77.Perlina4, 28.Eliza3, 5.Sterling2, 1.Rebecca1) was born on 15 Jul 1889 in Carlton, Hamilton County, Texas; died on 23 Jun 1966 in Bald Knob, White County, Arkansas. Notes:
Date of birth shown by Ray Coldeway as 15 Jun 1887 instead of in 1889. Census records indidate that 1889 is more likely.
Ray also shows a third child, daughter Desma Loreda, born 12 Feb 1911 in Hamilton County, Texas. She is not listed with the family on the 1930 census...presumably either married or died by 1930.

Obituary, as copied from FindAGrave:
Funeral service for Joada Korgan will be 11 a.m., Mon., Oct. 22, at the Musgrove-Merriott-Smith Chapel with Elder John Moyer, Pastor Dan Jensen, and Pastor Harvey Gil officiating. Burial will follow at Floral Haven Memorial Gardens, Broken Arrow. Visitation will be held at the funeral home Sun. 1-6 p.m.
Joada passed away Wed., Oct. 17, 2012, at her home at the age of 80.
The daughter of Robert and Myrtle Marsh was born July 5, 1932, in a small house in Pea Green, CO.
She grew up in that farm house through the seventh grade. They sold the farm and moved to Delta, CO, at the start of her 8th grade year and by God's grace she was able to attend Campion Academy throughout high school. These were hallmark years for Joada. She remained in close contact with many friends from there until the day she went to sleep. Every year she strived to attend Alumni weekend at Campion and looked forward to those trips.
After high school graduation, Joada attended Union College in Lincoln, NE. It was here that she became acquainted with and eventually married Darrell Beyer. After Darrell graduated in 1953, they relocated to South Dakota for a short time before being called to Ketchum, OK, where they would teach in the Adventist School System. Joada and Darrell were soon blessed with two healthy, BIG, baby boys: Douglas Eric Beyer and Allan Robert Beyer.
Joada was a woman of many talents! Besides being a devoted wife, mother, and teacher, she took a cosmetology class and became a hairdresser. She worked out of her home as a hairdresser for many years. Eventually she went on to complete her education and received her Masters Degree from the University of Tulsa. Unfortunately, she and Darrell were divorced in 1970.
In 1973, Joada remarried Dennis McGehee and inherited two more BIG boys: Dennis James McGehee and Randall Wayne McGehee. She and Dennis were married for 18 years until he passed away from cancer in 1992.
In September 1992, Julius Korgan swept her off her feet! Joada and Julius had been friends for a long time already. In fact, at one time, Julius was her teacher. Joada happily embraced an additional four adult children: Dwight Korgan and his wife, Christy, Allen Korgan, Heather Korgan and her husband, Mike, and Barbara and her husband, Richard Olt.
Joada has been a loving mother and grandmother to not only her biological children and grandchildren, but also to her extended family.
Joada was very active in the Claremore Seventh Day Adventist Church. In her own words, her "greatest desire is that ALL of us be in Heaven when Jesus comes back to take us home." In her last days, she said, "Each one of you means more to me than you can even imagine. I could write pages about what love I have for you, but hopefully I have shared enough of that love so that you all know how precious you are to me. Should I go before any of you, just carry that love in your hearts and minds and make a promise to meet me in Heaven."
Joada is survived by her husband, Julius; sons and wives: Doug and Bernice and Al and Sharon; grandchildren: Shannon, Ron and Trever Lepp, Andy, Tyler, and Aurora Beyer, and Ericca and Arin Beyer; and sisters-in-law: Margaret Marsh and Faye Marsh. She also has many step-children and grandchildren that she loved very dearly.
