Jim grew up in Texas as his family moved from place to place, living a year of so at one location then traveling to the next. When he was around 18 years old his family moved to a 20 acre farm in Poinsett County, Arkansas, near Harrisburg. He worked on the farm, picked cotton, worked for the railroad and at a stave mill. He did odd jobs until World War II, working at gas stations and later had a confectionary stand.
