      Pansy Margueritte Fuller Adickes

Pansy Margueritte Fuller Adickes, 92, of Hemphill died Thursday, Aug. 24, 2006.

Pansy was born March 20, 1914 in Hemphill, the daughter of the late Jim and Willie Mason FULLER. Pansy graduated from Hemphill High School as salutatorian in 1931 and graduated from Texas Women's University with a degree in Interior Design and History in 1935. This degree also included a permanent high school teacher's certificate. She returned to Hemphill and taught school for several years. Pansy returned to school at the University of Texas to become a pharmacist and graduated in 1943. She was very proud to be the first woman pharmacist from Sabine County.

Pansy married Leon ADICKES on October 5, 1941. They took over Hemphill Drug Company in 1943, from Pansy's father Jim, who founded the company in 1912. Leon and Pansy operated the drug store until 1976. Pansy received a 50 year certificate of active service from the State of Texas and remained an inactive registered pharmacist. She was amused in recent years because job offers would arrive in the mail. She would comment "I wonder what they would think if I showed up for an interview."

Pansy enjoyed being active in local organizations. She was a charter member of the Hemphill Garden club and served as the second president. Pansy worked with the band boosters, PTA, was a charter member of Sabind County Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. Pansy was a member of First Baptist Church for over 60 years and later joined with Leon the First Methodist Church. Leon grew up Lutheran and Pansy was Baptist so the compromised and became Methodist.

Pansy Margueritte Fuller Adickes is survived by her two daughters, Ann USSERY of Henderson and Sharon CROWELL of Hemphill, grandchildren are Stephen CROWELL, Darren CROWELL, Shannon CROWELL, Karen HAIRSTON, and Melissa GILLIS; and great-grandchildren, Jeffrey CROWELL, Madison CROWELL, Alanna CROWELL, Jacob CROWELL, Nickolas HAIRSTON, and Tyler and Tanner GILLIS. Services were held under the direction of Starr Funeral Home with interment in the Hemphill City Cemetery on Sunday, Aug. 27. The service was conducted by Pastor Gary Leinhart and eulogy was given by Martha TURNER.
