    • Jesse Gentry, a contractor and builder by occupation in early life, was a pioneer into Missouri, and built the first really respectable dwelling erected in St. Louis. It was the residence of Gov. Bates. Subsequently he came to Palmyra and there he built the first frame house put up in town. In 1835, having married in the meantime, he entered land in Shelby county, to which he removed, where he improved a farme, and resided until his death. He died in 1862. His wife, whose maiden name was Miss Nancy Payne, died in 1839. She was related to the early family of Paynes, for whom Paynesville, in Pike county, was named. (HISTORY OF MONROE AND SHELBY COUNTY, St. Louis Historical Society, Missouri: 1881, pp 916-917).
