Notes |
- FindAGrave shows him as a son of Abraham Mathews and Elizabeth (???) Burroughs, and brother of Inlow Mathews. There is an Inlow Mathews who also has a memorial at FindAGrave (FAG #34734320). That Inlow Mathews was shown as born ca 1815, also in Georgia (possibly Wilkes County). However, Inlow Mathews appears to be the son of a woman named Selah/Celia Ann, whom was living with his family in San Augustine County at the time of the 1850 and 1860 Federal Census. Of interest is the fact that "Celie Mathes, age 80, Female, NC" was ALSO listed in the home of Reese Mathews at the time of the 1860 Federal Census. In the home of Inlow, she was listed as "Cilia A. Matthews, age 80, Female, NC." It is assumed she was listed in both homes as she lived with both from time to time? The enumeration of Inlow Mathews home was on 30 July 1860, and that of the home of Reese Mathews was in 1 August 1860. The two men lived only about 20 households apart.
It is thefore assumed that Reese and Inlow are indeed brothers, both sons of the Celia that was listed in both of their homes in 1860. Her maiden name may be Burroughs, but this is not proven. Nor is the name of their father (possibly Abraham) proven.
