      Hazel Ellen Cooper Vestal Quarles, 88, of Huntington died Friday, Jan. 5, 1996 at Parkwood Place in Lufkin.

      Born April 7, 1907, in Sabine County as a daughter of the last Johnathan Elisha and Elizabeth (Rice) Cooper, she had lived in Angelina County eight years, moving from Hull.

      Survivors: two daughters, Hazel Ellen Morehead of Huntington and Katherine Bentley of Lufkin; four sons, Lonnie Vestal of Houston, L.B. and Bobby Lawrence Vestal, both of Littleton, Colorado; a sister, Maggie Robbins of Harper; a brother, J. E. Cooper of Houston; 23 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.

      She was preceded in death by her parents.

      Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the chapel of Starr Funeral Home Inc. in Hemphill with Luther Bolenbarker officiating. Interment was at Springhill Cemetery in Sabine County.
